DCBE/Acton Fire Chief Emeritus Stephen Boynton
BY MARK WILSON Staff Writer
Longtime
firefighter Stephen Boynton, who in January was appointed as chief emeritus of the DeCordova Bend Estates/Acton Fire De partment, died Tuesday, Sept. 6.
Boynton, 60, “went to be with the Lord on September 6, 2022, at around 9:30 p.m. surrounded by his family and close friends in his home,” according to his obituary on the Wiley Funeral Home website.
The funeral service was held Sept. 10, at Acton Baptist Church. Burial was in Acton Cemetery.
Boynton, who was born Oct. 13, 1961, had been a Granbury res ident since the age of six and was a 1980 graduate of Granbury High School.
He began his distinguished career as a firefighter at age 18 at the DCBE/Acton Volunteer Fire Department, where had served in various roles over the years including EMT, officer and rescue div er. In January he was appointed as the chief emeritus, and contin ued to serve as a firefighter for as long as he was able, into early summer. The DEBE/Acton fire station, on Smoky Hill Court, was recently named as the Stephen D. Boynton DCBE/Acton Firehaus 40 in his honor.
Bryan Wooten, who is in his second year as the DCBE/Action fire chief, noted that Boynton had served as the chief from 20152020.
“Stephen was a great friend and a great leader — somebody I looked up to and somebody that had an impact on my career in the fire service,” Wooten told the Hood County News. “The fire service and the community lost a great man.”
Boynton had been employed as a firefighter with the Fort Worth Fire Department for 34 years. He was a lieutenant for the final 24 of those years at Station 18 before retiring from the FWFD in 2018.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Sharay Boynton, and their sons, Stone and Slade.
Mack Bennett, a captain with the Granbury Volunteer Fire De partment who knew Boynton for more than 50 years, said, “Steve was a mentor to a lot young men in this county, a man of God and had a true servant’s heart. He was just not only a friend, but a brother.”
Bennett added, “Steve touched many lives as a Fort Worth Fire fighter, DCBE/Acton Chief and was (an) ambassador for God. He will be missed by all (who) came in contact with him.”
One of the many posts on the DCBE/Acton Volunteer Fire De partment’s Facebook page gave tribute to Boynton in stating, “Stephen was a phenomenal leader and mentor, exceptional friend, and was devoted to our volunteer fire department for over 40 years. We will miss you deeply Chief Boynton, but your legacy will forever live on at Firehaus 40.”

Your DCBE Security team handles a lot of duties on a daily basis. I will not be able to list everything in this one article, but here’s a summary.
GATE DUTIES
n Access Control – Check in guests; write passes, log plates, check driver license.
n Answer phone – Guests being called in, member complaints, information requests and members requests.
n Monitor cameras and emergency pager-scanner and dis patch patrol to calls, open both gates for emergency vehicles.
n Take RV reservations.
n Monitor weather radar during bad weather.
n Dispatch patrol to calls and log all communication from pa trol officers.
When a guest pulls up, we must check three different areas to see if the guest is allowed in, daily call-in log, standing list and a website where the names go that are called in using the app.
PATROL DUTIES
n Patrol all streets in DCBE checking for security concerns and rules violations.
n Enforce traffic rules with moving and stationary radar and issue Notice of Rules Violations if warranted.
n Respond to members’ calls for assistance, such as jump start vehicle, check for noise around the home at night, lock-outs etc.
n Respond to all emergency calls.
n Open trailer storage area when requested by member on Sat urdays and Thursdays for dumpster use and open every day for trailer pick up and return.
n Do drive-by close patrol checks of homes, buildings and area of concerns.
n Well-being checks.
n Work and investigate traffic accidents.
n Work security for special events, New Year’s, Halloween, etc.
n Daily vacation check where the officer walks around the member’s home checking doors, windows and other security concerns. This can be as many as 20-plus during the summer months.
n Assist with checking in guests at the RV park.
n Watch for parking issues on the streets and parking lots.
n Deliver ACC packets once a month.
We have 16 regular checks in addition to the vacation checks and close patrols.
n Lock up club, maintenance, community center, cart barn, pool, tennis courts and restrooms on the golf course and marina, check fitness center, boat stall doors, pickleball court, basketball court and restrooms.
Everything will need to be unlocked in the morning time.
This is just a part of what security does. Sometimes, we are asked to shut off water for people who are out of town when it’s going to freeze, change smoke detector batteries for those who are not able (we do not supply the batteries).
ALWAYS AVAILABLE
I am asking all DCBE members to please contact me if you feel that security was unable to handle your complaint in an efficient professional manner so that I can address the situation. I am available 24/7 at 817-964-8114. You can also stop by my office or simply send me an email at chief@dcbewed.com.

The sport attracts people of all ages because it is easy on the body, and anyone can play. Those are two aspects that have made it the fast est-growing sport in the U.S.
Pickleball is an all-inclusive sport no matter the age, weight or height of a player. It is a hybrid of badmin ton, table tennis and tennis. The player uses a paddle to hit a wiffle
The sport is played inside or out side on a court that resembles a tennis court, but instead of having doubles lines, it is played on four squares with a net at the median. The game can be played as doubles or as singles. When a player really connects, the ball can travel up to about 40 mph. Indoor balls have fewer and slightly larger holes than outdoor balls.

DCBE JUNIOR GOLF DEBUT A SUCCESS
BY RICK MAUCH Contributing Writer
Golf,
they say, is a lifetime sport. With that in mind, why not start early?
That is exactly what youths ages 5-17 can do in the De Cordova Bend Estates PGA Junior League, which conclud ed its first summer of play with 30 players. The league, for boys and girls, ran from June 1 with the first practice to July 31, when it wrapped up with a Parent/Child Scramble Tournament.
The league practiced each Wednesday. Matches were held on Sundays, either inter-squad or traveling to play another course — in this case Pecan Plantation, which has had a junior league for years.
“The main purpose of the league is to bring golf to youth that may have never played or touched a club before,” League Director Blake Thompson said. “We also have kids with some playing ex perience. We accept players of all stages of playing.
“The overall goal is to teach the lifelong sport of golf to as many kids as possible and at all skill levels. When we opened it up, all we wanted was for kids to want to continue playing golf. Since the season ended, almost every kid that played asked when we were starting up again and if we could add some fall matches.”
Thompson said the focus was not only on playing golf, but also the etiquette surrounding the game. That involves good interac tion with your playing partners, respect for the course and prop erty, and honesty with the rules.
“I believe golf teaches you respect, and we worked hard on things like taking care of the golf course, how to respect your playing partners on the greens and course, and many oth er things. We worked on many things other than just the golf swing,” he said.
Blake Chaveaux, one of the participants, said of the etiquette he learned, “I think I already knew some, but I learned not to step in the through line of someone’s putt.”
Judging from comments of several participants, the league was
a success in its inaugural year.
“I’ve played golf for fun, but I’ve never had a chance to com pete against other people. This was such a fun opportunity,” Jack Daly said.
“Best thing about DCBE Junior PGA was playing golf with all my friends, getting better hitting a driver and putter and making birdie putts,” Preston McCarty noted.
“It was really fun. It was a great way for me to meet other junior golfers in the neighborhood and learn the game of golf,” Hudson Handy commented.
Perrie Ann Thompson’s favorite part of it all was “Learning to play golf and getting to be on a team with my friends and making birdies.”
Chaveaux said among the things he learned was “how to lag putt and how to hit a bump-and-run with my 8-iron,” adding his favorite part was “all the competitions and beating Pecan.”
Thompson, a former Granbury High School golfer, believes the league could help feed players into the GHS system, one that has made the boys and girls programs among the most revered around. This year’s league included Lady Pirate junior golfer Akyah Ditto.
“I think we have 15-20 kids that, if they continue to play golf, could end up at GHS. We have a few kids that are in school at Godley as well,” Thompson said.
Thompson addressed the adage about golf being a lifetime sport.
“I don’t believe that you have to start playing golf at a young age to, at some point in your life, love golf. However, I do believe that if you learn to love golf at a young age, it will carry on with you for the rest of your life,” he said. “When you’re a kid and you start playing, you learn to love the game through a child’s eyes, and I believe that carries over.
“This game builds friendships, work relationships, competitive ness and respect. The fact that kids want to continue to play golf after going through the league is the most rewarding part of the process.”

SOMETHING GOOD IS COOKING CHEF EDGAR COLEMAN
Recently, Fairway had an opportunity to go be hind the scenes and talk to DCBE interim Chef Edgar Coleman.
Q: What drew you to a career as a chef?
A: I got a job in a restaurant kitchen when I was 16 and I just sort of evolved into being a part of the restaurant business. It is all I have ever done.
Q: What about cooking do you like the best?
A: I like making people happy. I really do and food is a great way to accomplish that.
Q: The Benders golf tour nament is one of the biggest events at DeCordova. What sort of preparation do you do to make the event special?
A: To start, lots of preparation. You do not want to fall short on people’s expectations. We have had the menu for Benders planned for perhaps six months. Of course, we do not order the food until the week of the event, but it is getting all that product ready and prepared, so we do not run out. I want to be efficient and put out a high quality, enjoyable product.
Q: What it the favorite thing you like to cook?
A: I am a big fan of Asian style cooking. I think that has shown in some of my weekly specials. The first chef I worked with was from Japan, and so I got to learn and see the effort she put into her work.
Q: If we simply turned you loose in the kitchen, would you rather prepare something from a recipe you have previously pre pared, or would you rather go “off the map” and create?
A: I enjoy playing and creating something. My favorite part of cooking is the experimentation and allowing myself to be cre ative. Then I have the fun of seeing people enjoy what I created.
Q: What sort of positives will the newly renovated kitchen facil ities bring to the kitchen staff at DeCordova?
A: It will make the workflow much easier. They doubled up on most everything inside the kitchen. There is a banquet side to the kitchen and a side to take care of the day-to-day. In the past when there was a big event, we were falling over each other trying to get food out and we would sometimes have to stop ser vice to membership to serve a big party or event. This will not be necessary in the future. The renovation is going to make us more efficient and productive which leads to a better service.
Q: We have noticed you brought back the omelet bar on Sun day. What has the response been from the membership?
A: With the renovation, it was something we had to stop doing and I think the membership missed it. I knew was going to be a little crazy when we brought it back with the space limitations we have until we can move back into the clubhouse, but for me it was bringing something back to the membership that they have missed. We have had a positive responwse with tons of people participating.
Q: Where do you like to go to eat when you go out?
A: I almost never go out to eat. There is Korean barbecue place in Ft Worth that is fantastic, but I can’t remember the last time I ate out.
Q: What do you during your time away from the kitchen?
A: I like being outside. Going on hikes. I like to play a little mu sic. My dad was in a band and he taught me to play.
Chef Edgar
