The Collinsville Story

LIFE IN THE 1800S

Historic Collinsville is a rural pioneer settlement featuring authentically restored log houses and outbuildings dating from 1830 to the turn of the century. The settlement takes visitors from the earliest “first home” to the expansive big house on the hill with separate kitchen, living and sleeping areas. Each home and outbuilding has been painstakingly restored to its original condition and furnished authentically.

Enter into our history and see how life was then lived. Learn what made us “people of strength.” Enjoy the rolling hills of Tennessee, quiet walks or a picnic under the trees while exploring one of the log homes.

SETTLER LIFE

This is the land where the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Creek, Iroquois and Shawnee Indi ans traveled. It is where the soldiers of the North and South met; just 45 miles to the northwest is Fort Donelson National Battlefield, the site of a major Civil War battle. Cotton and sheep were raised by the early settlers and then transported by land and down the Cumberland River, which lies just two miles away. Now, on the same river, the Delta Queen Riverboat slowly slips its way south to Nashville and passes fields of corn, wheat, soybeans and cattle.

THE WEAKLEY FAMILY

In 1974, JoAnn Weakley and her husband Glenn began the work on their dream of rebuilding the settlement of Collinsville. They wanted to establish an area where people of all ages could come and see how our ancestors lived in the 1800s and how these pioneers passed on to us many lessons and values to be treasured. Being a for mer school teacher, JoAnn believed that children especially should be exposed to these values with a “hands-on” approach. They opened “Historic Collinsville” to the public in 1997 as a 501(c)3 organization. In 2018, to ensure that Collinsville is preserved and the work continues, the Weakleys sold Collinsville to Montgomery County Government. The property is maintained and operated by Visit Clarksville.

Sadly, Glenn and JoAnn passed away within days of each other in September 2021. They were adored by their community and we are honored to carry on their passion for history and sharing it with children.

Class Is in Session:

A Parent’s Guide to Preventing & Handling Lice

When your kids are home for summer, you probably don’t think much about lice. That’s for good reason. While lice can be a problem at any time of year, infestations are much more common during the school year. Why are lice so common in kids?

Consider how children interact with others. They’re much more likely than adults to bounce around playfully with their peers, bringing their heads into close contact. They’re also more likely to share items of clothing, like hats or scarves, and other personal items, like brushes or combs. That’s how lice spread.

We would like to dispel one common myth. Head lice are not related to personal hygiene or cleanliness. They are equal-opportunity scalp invaders.

How to Prevent Lice

There’s no foolproof way to prevent a lice infestation. But it’s important to teach kids not to share their personal items. Make sure your child’s belongings are carefully and clearly labeled with his or her name. Remind him or her that any item that comes into contact with the

head should not be shared with others outside the household—this includes combs and brushes, hair clips and other hair accessories, hats, helmets, scarves, coats, towels, headsets, and even earbuds.

If your child has long hair, it can be helpful to keep it pulled back or up in a ponytail, braid, or a bun.

What to Do If Lice Appear

Even if you make every effort to avoid lice, they’ll still sometimes make an appearance. If a lice infestation is reported in your child’s classroom, you’ll want to carefully examine his or her head, looking for nits.

It’s also a good idea to check personal items that have been to school, like coats and hats, and to check items around your household for the eggs.

If you find that your child has lice, give your pediatrician’s office a call. There are many different topical medications that can be used to get rid of head lice and nits, available both over the counter and by prescription.

Admit it, you read the word “lice” in the headline and immediately felt like something was crawling on your skin. These pesky little bugs plague many American families each year.
