Established in 1826, Walterboro offers the best of South Carolina — rich history, untouched nature, economic potential and small-town charm.
The City of Walterboro was founded by Paul and Jacob Walter in 1783 as a summer retreat from their rice plantations, and locals agree that’s still how we view our historic settlement today. Walterboro is known as The Front Porch of the Lowcountry, boasting Southern charms, history, culture and hospitality.
Let the red rocking chair be your beacon and come rock with us.
While we pride ourselves on small-town charm and history, there is also much to offer in the way of economic development. Walterboro is a place where small businesses grow and succeed on their own merit. Our thriving downtown and growing commercial corridor create an abundance of jobs for those across all stages of life.
Being located in the heart of the Lowcountry makes traveling convenient. Walterboro is just a quick hour from Charleston, Beaufort, Summerville, Columbia and Savannah, right off of I-95, and within an hour of two international airports. There’s big city access from small town living. You can truly have your cake and eat it too.
So come, stay a day, stay a lifetime. We’re saving you a seat on The Front Porch of the Lowcountry.
Bill Young Mayor of WalterboroSpend your time in Walterboro learning about Lowcountry wildlife and nature in the recently opened Walterboro Wildlife Center and follow it up with a walk in the Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary. Meander through various shops in our historic downtown or take in some history at the Colleton Museum. Find art and culture abounding at the South Carolina Artisans Center, a historic Victorian-style cottage hosting art from over 300 South Carolinian artists. The Front Porch is brimming with nature, culture and history.
The Mission of the Walterboro-Colleton Chamber of Commerce is to enable prosperity within Colleton County and Walterboro by:
1. Advocating for business-friendly policies and programs that will help existing businesses thrive;
2. Promoting infrastructure, housing and educational development to attract new businesses; and
3. Providing member businesses with affordable integrated services that will yield profitable growth.

Guests wanting to travel to many of South Carolina’s resort plantations, beach communities, cities and ports have a convenient way to get to all of these destinations – without the hassle of flying into larger, commercial airports. The Lowcountry Regional Airport is located in Walterboro. It is the largest regional aviation airport in the Palmetto State, and local Colleton County leaders describe it as an aeronautical gateway to Charleston, Columbia, Beaufort, Hilton Head and Savannah.
The Lowcountry Regional Airport is a hub for pilots who are sight-seeing and who need a rest between schedules. It is also an ideal landing location for busy businessmen and women who are coming to the area as part of the entire Lowcountry’s bustling industrial and tourism scene.
The local airport boasts three runways. Each runway ranges from 5,500 feet to 6,022 feet. The airport’s leadership team has secured 80 more acres on site. This land is being used to extend the main runway to accommodate larger aircraft.
The airport itself features a pilots’ lounge for pilots and visitors, bathrooms and shower facilities. The space is also frequently used by the local ACE Basin Aviation Flight School and by military cadets in area flight training programs. The airport itself also has an office, kitchen
space for weary pilots, a training center, a shop space and hangar and ramp space. The airport also provides full service for jets coming into the airport, including fuel at highly-competitive rates.

Colleton’s location, vision and resources have us primed for growth
Colleton’s industries have access to the best of everything
Think of what it means to be situated between two worldrecognized and growing tourist and industrial markets, in our case, that is Savannah and Charleston. Both are picturesque and are tourist meccas, but also have world-class ports, two commercial airports, and two military installations. This puts Colleton within an hour to these major advantages for economic development, meaning we have access to watercraft, aviation, automotive, agricultural and forest-producing industries.
Colleton has benefitted from some of these industry sectors, bringing millions in new jobs. The county also has its own airport, Lowcountry Regional Airport, and its own aviation company, Low-country Aviation Company.
Colleton also touts its own Colleton County Commerce industrial park, which is alongside Interstate 95.
To continue utilizing the unique benefits of our fortunate geography, Colleton County officials are maintaining and developing its inventory of available industry sites and buildings.
Keeping Colleton County a
major player in the growth of the entire Palmetto State and the regional coast is about investing time, energy and resources in developing the community, all while keeping its natural resources abundant and its work force ready and trained.

INSTRUCTIONS
Mix pineapple juice and both rum in a glass and stir. Mix together blue curacao and water in another glass and stir. Fill a 6 oz glass with ice. Pour in pineapple rum mixture first and then carefully pour blue curacao mixture over ice to slightly mix colors.
What those who protect the residents of Colleton County do when the sirens aren’t blaring and the emergency lights aren’t flashing can be as important to a community’s well-being as their actions when an emergency arrives.

The longest free-flowing blackwater river in North America flows through Colleton County. Meandering slowly from its source in the Upstate of South Carolina, in Saluda and Edgefield Counties, the river flows through Colleton County toward the Atlantic Ocean, where it merges with two other rivers and dumps into the ACE Basin. The ACE Basin, which represents the Ashepoo River, the Combahee River and the Edisto River, is one of the pristine places in the United States. It is federally protected and preserved.
The river itself spans across 11 counties in South Carolina and covers more than 5,000 miles.
The Edisto River resembles a flowing cup of black tea: the river water is stained dark from the many leaves of trees that reach into it from its banks. It is a favorite recreational spot for kayakers, canoers and fishermen. It is also a beloved spot for nature lovers and river tubers, who can roll through the waters and explore the large trees and cypress knots. The river moves in and out of channels, which resemble tangled fingers that can take kayakers and tubers into the Four Holes Swamp and into smaller
natural spots.
The Edisto also is home to sporadic sand bars and landscapes, that give nature-lovers a convenient place to pause and enjoy a packed lunch or a cool dip.
Access to the river is easy: the Colleton State Park and the Givhans State Park are located along her banks.
The Edisto River is often cleaned and protected by several non-profit organizations, including the Edisto Riverkeeper, Friends of the Edisto, and the Edisto River Canoe and Kayak Trail.
The latter is a group of volunteers but is also an actual 57-mile trail that boasts gentle and flat passages through the Edisto’s sultry waters. As for the ERCK group, they often host a series of paddle exhibitions and trips down the Edisto River. For more information, or to plan a trip along the Edisto River, visit the group’s Web sit at www.ercktrail. org.
For information on public park access spots and campsites along the Edisto River, visit www. southcarolinaparks.com or call 1-866-345-7275.
Handmade treasures from selected artists always delight at South Carolina’s official folk art retail center
You could hunt all over the state for authentic handcrafted art representing South Carolina’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.
Or you could pop over to the South Carolina Artisans Center. To explore the handcrafted Art by handpicked Artists. See, Touch, Smell, Taste, and Shop Art.
Located in Walterboro just minutes from I-95, the state’s official folk art and craft center is a one-stop showcase for fine handmade crafts of every imaginable variety and media, from Gullah sweetgrass baskets to Southern face jugs, a craft tradition started in Edgefield by African slaves who worked on plantations as potters.
Along with the indigenous folk art created using centuries-old craft techniques, the collection also includes contemporary crafts, large installation sculptures and two-dimensional art.
Fittingly, the nonprofit gallery is housed in a restored eight-room Victorian cottage built in the late 1800s in Walterboro’s historic district. Inside you’ll find pottery, paintings, jewelry, quilts, mobiles, vases and furnishings.
The art collection features the work of more than 200 South Carolina master artisans selected in a twostage juried process that includes an evaluation by independent professional jurors. Diversity not only represents the population of South Carolina but the offerings at the Center.
Despite the high quality of the wares, you can find Art at every price point.
To be sure, there are plenty of pricier items that have been among the collection, including a $3,500 sweetgrass basket made by a well-known Gullah artist using a unique coiling technique handed down from her West African ancestors.
One of the most impressive and expensive items in the center is a $58,000 one-of-a-kind wooden canoe handcrafted by a local artist who lives just outside town. As much works of art as functional boats, these canoes are made from exotic and indigenous woods, fetching as much as $160,000 for a commissioned tandem.
As its mission, the South Carolina Artisans Center showcases and markets handcrafted artwork of the
state’s leading artists, while ensuring that art inspired by tradition is protected and nurtured; a gallery that speaks to the unique talents of handpicked South Carolina artists.
