Welcome to fall and holiday season in Mexia! My goodness time has gone by quickly this year! I know for many of you this is your favorite time of year – bulky sweaters and all things pumpkin spice. I think fall is a great time as well – those Friday night lights are still on, everyone getting ready for the holidays and all the things that go along with that and getting into the mode of doing more for others seems to happen more in this season than in any other. Continue to look for ways you can get involved in that but try to get involved all year round if you can. As the temperatures get cooler, it’s a great time to get out and explore things happening around the area, ride some back roads, check out area places that you haven’t been to before, and enjoy!
As we enter into the holiday season, I encourage you to shop local first, and challenge you to do that all year long. It is so important to support those working and living in our communities and who are raising their families here. It’s also important so that our community survives. Let’s keep those tax dollars here. You can get most of the same things here that you can get else where and you will get true, specialized customer service when you do. It’s a complete win. That being said, many of our area businesses will be offering specials as we enter into the holiday season so be sure you check with them often to find out what’s going on. Get on their mailing lists and follow their social media pages. You don’t want to miss the great things happening!
Speaking of great things… Our Merry Christmas Market will be Friday and Saturday, December 2-3 this year. On Thursday, December 1, the City of Mexia will host the Christmas tree lighting and we’ll celebrate all things in Mexia. Our Christmas parade will be on Saturday morning, December 3, at 9:30AM. Watch for details about signing up for the parade. The Parade theme this year will be “Gnome for the Holidays”. We look forward to seeing your floats and parade entries. Follow us on Facebook @Mexia Chamber or on our website at www.mexiachamber.com. Stay tuned for more details regarding all of these events.
We’re excited to announce our new website and encourage you to visit it often. This is a exciting change and we’re proud to be able to better showcase our members, and Chamber here. We’ve implemented a lot of new things this year and we’re excited that our business community has been a great part of it. We welcome you all to stop by and check us out and to join the Chamber. Individuals are welcome to join as well as businesses, and non-profits. We look forward to bringing you new and exciting things in the future and growing some of the new things we’ve already been working on in 2022. We appreciate your feedback and support.
We welcome you to fall, and send you best wishes for a healthy, happy and prosperous holiday season!

“A man’s stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth; from the produce of his lips, he shall be filled. Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat of its fruit.”
Proverbs 18:20-21
“By your words, you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” Matthew 12:31
What does this actually mean though?
It means that your words are powerful. They’re not just words, they are creative forces, with the power to transform your life for better or for worse. What you speak about yourself, about circumstances, the situations that you are facing and about the world around you matters.
If you are constantly complaining about what’s going wrong in your life, if you are fixated on your problems, and if you are always talking about how things won’t work out-you are creating more problems and struggles for yourself. In essence, you are eating the “fruit” of your words. However, if you are praising God when things go wrong, declaring that good is coming (even when you can’t see it), and giving thanks no matter what--you are creating opportunities for your life to shift. This is also the “fruit” of your words, just in a different way.
Now, this is not to say we should never talk about our pain or struggles. And we definitely should not put a spiritual bandaid on hardship or pretend everything is fine when things are hard. Rather, come to God in honesty and authenticity and allow Him to meet you there. God doesn’t run away from pain and struggle. Neither should we, because it is those things that God wants to be invited into.
You must know, God doesn’t leave us in hardship forever, either. He leads us through it.
Whatever it is that you are facing today --- it’s because God has equipped you to slay it! If you’re facing a mountain, it’s because God has called you to move it. If you’re facing an impossible situation, it’s because God wants to meet you
This recipe is submitted by Bobby Forrest and is one of Ina Beth Forrest’s favorite family holiday recipes. Bobby said she always made this at Christmas time. This is a copy of Ina Beth’s recipe card. Ina Beth was a sweet lady who cared for many people, especially through her individualized customer service during the years of owning Casual Fashions in Mexia Downtown.
there and remind you that He is still the God of miracles. He is still the God who holds ALL power.
Your words hold the power of life and death. Therefore, speak LIFE over every situation and every relationship in your life.
As you do, God will begin showing you solutions and bringing about miraculous provision. He may call you to take a scary step of faith. DO IT. He may ask you to have a hard conversation, DO IT. He may invite you to give away money when you’re feeling financially strapped. DO IT.
But even before you see the breakthrough, use your WORDS to speak breakthrough, to speak life, to speak provision, and to speak healing.
After all EVERY battle, EVERY sin, ALL sickness and disease has been won through Jesus at Calvary!!
Mexia High School’s history is alive in the hearts of its alumni and stands the test of time in the Public School Museum and Alumni Association located in the upstairs, west wing of the Administration Building at 616 N. Red River in Mexia.
“Pretty much everybody that went to school [in Mexia], there’s probably something there that represents them,” President Ron Capehart said. Each school organization is represented, from sports to cheerleading, band, drama, Future Farmers of America, academics and more.
This year the museum is celebrating 25 years of operating, and will have a ribbon cutting ceremony commemorating its joining the Mexia Area Chamber of Commerce.
The museum has a collection of alumni memorabilia and historical artifacts, which represent MHS faculty, students and senior classes throughout the years, Capehart said. It houses items like yearbooks, jackets and sweaters, news articles and spirit items.
Its purpose is to promote education and recognize those who have contributed to that, he said.
“We always encourage and definitely want whoever graduated or went to school whether they graduated or not, if they went to school here in years past, our doors are open, and that’s the reason we’re there, to support the alumni.”
The museum has been housed in the Administration Building since it started in 1996, and it had its first Open House event in 1997.
The first class to graduate from MHS was around 1888, and the museum has pictures of the first faculty, superintendent and graduating class, Capehart said.
The museum has thousands of items on display, he said. They are running out of room to put new items. “People don’t realize that we’re one of the largest public school museums in the state,” he said.
Alumni can host reunions free of charge and artifacts offer them the opportunity to travel back in time to enjoy their school years, Capehart said. Besides a place
for alumni to visit and host reunions, the public school museum gives out scholarships to students, awards alumni and supports the schools.
The museum will present awards during the Sept. 23, 2022 homecoming football game to the Class of 1972 distinguished alumni and Coming Home Queen.
Distinguished alumni is an individual that is selected from the honored class, and is chosen by those class members. It’s an individual who has been successful in their career and personal life, and contributed to the community, he said.
The Coming Home Queen is a female graduate selected by the class, not necessarily the original homecoming queen, he said.
On Saturday, Sept. 24, it will have its Open House from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There is an awards ceremony at
a.m, where they award two honorees representing MHS and Dunbar-Douglass, which was the former Black school in Mexia, he said. The 2021 Coming Home Queen was MHS 1971 graduate Mary Hawkins Marcotte, and Distinguished Alumni 1971 graduate Sharon Yelverton Garber.
Funding comes from donations and membership fees, Capehart said. Membership fees are about $10 per year, or $150 for a lifetime membership.
There are currently about 20 active members, but there are hundreds of inactive members who pay fees to support the museum, he said.
“The community should know their history and their roots,” he said.
It’s a good way for people to come back and relate to what they went through, he said.
“Our motto has always been ‘Keeping the Memories Alive,’ and that’s what motivates us. Most schools, from what I’ve experienced, usually don’t put that much emphasis or importance upon keeping their historical items,” he said. “Fortunately, in this case, there was a group of people that did take that time to do that, and saw the importance.”
The museum is constantly cleaning, and preserving
items so they don’t deteriorate further, he said. They try to keep everything in a climate-controlled setting.
Photos will deteriorate over a period of time and sunlight is really harmful, he said. Material on jackets and newspaper clippings tend to age badly.
“We do the best we can with what we have to work with,” he said. “We keep it so it will be preserved as long as we can.”
The most recent contribution to the museum was from Sonny Adams, an individual from the Mexia 1989 football state championship. Adams donated a number of items like trophies, banners and pictures, Capehart said.
If someone wants to donate an item all they have to do is take it to the Administration Building, and the school secretary will contact someone from the museum, he said. They like to take down people’s names and information to show appreciation later.
“If we just have one student come back that graduated 30 or 40 years ago, or even more, and they all of a sudden take a trip down memory lane and see themselves again, and how they were when they were young, it’s worth it to us,” Capehart said.

We proudly support the working women in Limestone County
Our wonderful team makes the Manor the next best thing to home.
Mexia Area Nutrition Needs and Homeless Advocates or MANNHA was formed in 2019 with a dedication to reducing food insecurities within Limestone and Freestone Counties. MANNHA serves as a charitable ministry to families, senior citizens and individuals that might otherwise be missed with Government or other outreach programs. The focus is not only on Mexia, but the rural areas that are otherwise underserved such as Wortham, Streetman, Winkler, Richland, Coolidge, Tehuacana and Prairie Hill. MANNHA occasionally services Groesbeck as needed since they are regularly served by other agencies. But MANNHA is open to anyone in needsomeone from any other location is welcome to receive at any location where a food distribution is taking place. In addition, MANNHA volunteers deliver food boxes to needy community housebound families upon request.
Primarily our source of the food donations are from MidWest Food Bank. This is a 501-C3 organization which is privately funded and located in the Mid Cities. MANNHA volunteers and Board Members drive their own vehicles with trailers to the Mid Cities to pick up pallets of food and bring back for local distribution. MANNHA is also blessed with several private donors who contribute financially which allows our Board Members to buy non-perishable staple items in bulk to add to the food distribution boxes. Weekly our Board Members assist in packing food distribution boxes and monthly we are blessed with a local church congregation that packs boxes as well.
Currently we are pending a program with Central Texas Food Bank to take on a Senior program which is structured to help those aged 60 plus with lower household incomes. It is 30lb box of nonperishables once a month which include protein, vegetable and fruit servings, along with the perishable government cheese which is apparently a favorite of many seniors. Unfortunately, at this time we cannot manage the Senior program as our main location needs electrical upgrades for which we seeking financial funding support.
MANNHA is solely operated on a 100% volunteer basis with no paid staff. And we are supported solely by the donations of Civic organizations, businesses and individuals that have the same commitment to community as we do. We strive to be good stewards of our donations. We have been very blessed with fresh garden produce, frozen food donations, meat donations, freezers, refrigerators, dollies, shelving, shopping carts, pallet dollies, boxes, a trailer, a City lot for a permanent location and tradesmen labor for projects. MANNHA does incur necessary costs such as electric bills,
gasoline for the trips to and from the Mid Cities, trailer maintenance, toll charges, a building payment as well as insurance and property taxes. But our constant goal is to keep overhead costs low so that donations can be focused on the purchase of food.
As you are aware, during pandemics such as COVID and the following tough financial times, many families, seniors and individuals struggle more than ever to make ends meet. The cost of food has risen substantially and there is no end in sight of the increasing need to fight food insecurity. Realizing that it is also tough on businesses, churches, and organizations of all sorts we greatly appreciate any support that is provided to MANNHA. Together we know that we can provide help to the Limestone and Freestone Communities to keep our mission going.
Our hope in reaching out to the community is to make families more aware of what Mexia Area Nutrition, Needs and Homeless Advocates mission is and how we fit into the community. We are urgently seeking more volunteers and looking for donors to assist our outreach ministry. We urge local churches, Civic organizations, businesses, and individuals to contact us for volunteering opportunities and monetary donations. Again, we are a 501-C3 and can write a receipt for your donation for tax write-off purposes. Or if you are in need of Community Service hours for a school Club please let us know and we would love to help you as you help us!
Please go out and like our MANNHA Facebook page where we post updates about our Food Distributions! We cherish your prayers and well wishes. And thank you for any consideration to MANNHA.

We had a great 3rd quarter Business After Hours event, hosted by The Mexia News. There was a fabulous turnout with area businesses represented. Mary Shaefer and DECA officers were also present to be a part of the evening. This was a great networking opportunity, and everyone greatly appreciated the tour of the print room, as well as the door prizes.
During these 3 days you can expect to the Christmas tree lighting by the City of Mexia, explore the new decorations and shop and eat locally, with many special events. Expect Food vendors and the Rotary's Chili meal.
The Christmas parade will be moving to Saturday morning! Stay tuned for sign up information and times. The theme is Gnome for the Holidays!
The Christmas Market at the Civic Center will run Friday and Saturday this year - stay tuned for more information on that as well as vendor opportunties. Be on the lookout for Santa sightings!
