Here’s your guide to exploring Columbus, the county seat of Colorado County, and the surrounding areas. This magazine gives a comprehensive detailing of where to shop, stay, sip, dine, worship and even where to live, if you love it as much as we do and want to relocate!

From historic attractions to natural excursions along the Colorado River, to chic boutiques, familyowned and operated stores, frozen treats to cold beers and live music, Columbus has everything you could want for days of fun and adventure for the whole family.

Welcome to our wonderful hometown. The City of Columbus is a beautiful central Texas community full of friendly people. Whether you’re visiting here for business, vacation, or have lived here for years, we welcome you and hope you find your visit to Columbus a pleasant one.

History abounds from our town. We have some of the oldest live oak trees in the State! The historic Alley Log Cabin and Tool Museum is another unique site, dating to the 1830s. The Colorado County Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and you must see the beautiful dome. The Stafford Opera house is just stunning. Medallions of the State Historical Survey Committee have been placed on almost 80 sites in Columbus.

As for recreation, Columbus offers a variety of options. There are multiple parks throughout town, a community golf course, and the beautiful Colorado River to tube or kayak. In addition, we have the Santa Claus Museum…the only one in the south.

Columbus has something for everyone. Choose from a combination of gift stores, antique stores, clothing, and traditional shops. You will have no problem finding what you need here including a great meal–our restaurants in Columbus are the best around!

Kick up your boots, grab a cold drink, pull up a chair on a patio or porch and stay a spell in Columbus!

THE COLUMBUS BUSINESS REVITALIZATION GRANT (CBRG) is an extension of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce. The purpose is to empower our members to enhance and improve their businesses and non-profits. Any member of the Chamber of Commerce for one (1) year and in good standing with both the Chamber and the city of their location may apply for the grant. Information is available at the Chamber office.

RIBBON CUTTINGS AND GRAND OPENINGS are held for all new Chamber members whether at their place of business or in front of the Stafford Opera House for members without a storefront. The Chamber will also do a rededication for members if they move locations or undergo a major renovation.

Chamber Programs & Initiatives

NETWORKING MIXERS offer a special opportunity for the sponsoring Chamber member to showcase their business, products, services, and facilities. In 2023, Networking Mixers will be held in February, June, September, and December. These events are extremely popular so to reserve your spot to host a mixer give the Chamber a call at 979-732-8385.

LUNCH AND LEARNS are co-hosted with a business or civic organization four times a year. The Lunch and Learns are always open to the public and free of charge. A lite lunch is provided and topics of interest that are important to the community and county are presented. In 2023, the Lunch and Learns will be held in January, April, July, and October. If you would like to co-host a Lunch and Learn, give the Chamber a call at 979-732-8385.

THE ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING is always held on the last Thursday of January at the Stafford Opera House. The “state of the Chamber” is presented along with a social hour. It’s a time for the Chamber members to meet other members, socialize, and hear about programs, initiatives, events, and more. The Board of Directors is in attendance to get to know the needs of your business.

THE JUNIOR AMBASSADOR PROGRAM is a scholarship program open to sophomores and juniors in Columbus. The recipients of the scholarships receive a $3,000 scholarship to continue their higher education at either a college of their choice or a trade school. Each ambassador is required to

Annual Events

MAGNOLIA DAYS FESTIVAL is the third weekend in May in historic downtown Columbus on the Courthouse Square. The festival is a day and a half of live music, merchandise vendors, food vendors, activities and games for the kids, a car show, an art show, reenactments, Biergarten, and so much more. We hope to “see you there, on the square” for the Magnolia Days Festival 2023.

THE EASTER EGG HUNT ON THE COURTHOUSE LAWN is held the Saturday before Easter and is open to the public free of charge. Approximately 1,000 filled Easter eggs are distributed evenly in three different areas of the lawn to accommodate the different age groups of children. Refreshments of cookies and drinks are served.

THE FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION in Columbus is the longest running Fourth of July Celebration in the State of Texas. It is always held on the 4th and the fireworks display proudly sponsored by H-E-B takes place at 9:15 pm in the area by Columbus Municipal Golf Course. The city pool is open late for families to enjoy all at no charge.

LADIES NIGHT OUT is the first Thursday of December from 3-9 pm in beautiful downtown Columbus. Merchants are open late for shopping, and vendors are set up at the Stafford Opera House, on the Courthouse Square, and at locations on Milam Street and Walnut Street. Enjoy live music, food, and wine sampling. Purchase a commemorative wine glass to add to your collection and just enjoy an evening of fun with friends and family.

From the springtime Magnolia Days Festival, the Friday Night Lights that shine brightly at our three high school stadiums during football season in the fall, to the wildly popular Ladies Night Out at Christmastime, there is always something happening in Colorado County. With our great food, great history, and great times, we represent the best the great State of Texas has to offer.

Co lorado County was named for the Colorado River, which runs through it. The county was formed in 1836, and the City of Columbus, the county seat, may have been planned and named as early as 1823.

Columbus is one of the oldest settlements in central Texas, and was established by Stephen F. Austin and his “Old 300”.

Perhaps the most notable early resident was Benjamin Beeson, who was granted a league of land south of present Columbus in 1824. Beeson's large home near the river became a stopping point for travelers, and soon acquired the name Beeson's Crossing. The site is now home to Beason’s Park, which sits at the bank of the Colorado River. When Sam Houston's army retreated from Gonzales after the battle of the Alamo, it camped on the East bank of the Colorado River in Colorado County, and the Mexican army camped about two miles west of the river; the armies remained for seven or eight days. Other Mexican troops under Antonio López de Santa Anna arrived on March 25, 1836, and Houston ordered a further retreat. During the Runaway Scrape hundreds of persons crossed the river at Benjamin Beeson's ford. Colorado County, one of the original counties of the Republic of Texas, was formed in 1836 and organized in 1837. The

first district court was held by Robert M. Williamson in April 1837 in Columbus. A German settlement grew up around the community of Frelsburg around 1839, and the first German university in the state, Hermann University, was chartered there in 1844. Two other towns, Eagle Lake and Alleyton, formed on the line of the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos, and Colorado Railway, which had begun building into Colorado County in 1859. Alleyton was at one time an important cotton-shipping point. The county's first newspaper, the Colorado Citizen, began publication in 1857 in Columbus. The newspaper is still in publication today, now known as The Colorado County Citizen, and is among the oldest surviving news publications in the State of Texas. By 1873, the City of Weimar had been formed, like many other towns, in anticipation of the Galveston, Harrisburg, and San Antonio rail line. Weimar was named for Weimar, Germany, and D.W. Jackson donated half of the land for the town’s creation.

Locale & Geography

Colorado County is crossed by Interstate Highway 10, U.S. Highways 90 and 90A, and State Highway 71, as well as by the Union Pacific railroad. The county includes 964 square miles of level to rolling land with elevations that range from 150 to 425 feet above sea level.

The average minimum temperature here in January is 41° F, and the average maximum in July is 98°.

The growing season lasts 280 days, and from 11 to 20 percent of the land is considered prime farmland. In the northwest portion of Colorado County, in the Blackland Prairie area, the land supports elm, oak, pecan, and mesquite trees along streams. The remainder is a post oak savanna, where post oak, blackjack oak, and elm grow, with walnuts and pecans along streams. Historians say this area has been the site of human habitation for approximately 12,000 years. Archaic-age hunters and gatherers lived on deer, bison, roots, and nuts right here in Colorado County. The Coco branch of the Karankawa tribe hunted through the area, and Tonkawa Indians ranged up into the area from the south.

Population & Culture

After dropping 15 percent between 1900 and 1910 to 18,897, Colorado County's population remained relatively static during the 20th century, numbering 19,129 in 1930, 17,638 in 1970, and 18,383 in 1990. Throughout most of the 20th century, Columbus, the county seat and largest town, was the home of 15 to 20 percent of the county's population. The town had 3,367 residents in 1990.

According to the 2020 census population counts, Columbus has a population of 3,707, Eagle Lake has a population of 3,402 and Weimar has 2,060 residents.

Colorado County is home to over 20,000 residents today.

Other unincorporated communities in the county include Sheridan, Garwood, Altair, Bernardo, Oakland, Glidden, Rock Island, Frelsburg, Borden, Chesterville, Nada, Matthews, Mentz, and Alleyton.

Colorado County is proud of its diverse cultural makeup. German, Mexican, Austrian, Native American, African, and Czech immigrants played vital roles in the creation of Colorado County, and their influences are still prevalent today.

Annual events like the Gedenke! Festival in Weimar, the Prairie Chicken Festival in Eagle Lake and the two-day Magnolia Days Festival in Columbus, which attracts over 4,000, all pay tribute to the county’s rich, colorful history.

Colorado County is a food lover’s paradise with mouth-watering, kolaches and klobasneks, awardwinning true-Texas barbecue, famous sausage recipes over a century old, down-home Southern cooking, Thai and Italian foods, breweries, and vineyards right here for you to enjoy.

If you love the great outdoors, sprawling sporting clubs, wildlife parks, golfing, hunting, fishing, and a waterpark are all within the county lines.

History buff? Well, get comfortable because it will take you days to visit all of the historic sites and markers this county is home for.

You’ll quickly see that when it comes to fun, this isn’t Colorado County’s first rodeo.

And speaking of rodeos, the annual Colorado County Fair in Columbus is over 40 years strong. Three days loaded with carnival rides and eats, live music, rodeo excitement, and much more.

Economy

While the overall cost of living is nearly 20 percent lower than the US average in Columbus, the quality of living here is far above average.

The City of Columbus and surrounding areas offer breathtaking, historic homes for rent or sale, ranch-style homes with spacious acreage, as well as affordable apartments and duplexes.

Of Colorado County’s 2,000-plus businesses, close to 500 of those are women-owned firms, and over 500 minority-owned firms.

Some additional advantages of our small town living include: Columbus is attractively situated approximately 90 minutes away from any point in the “Golden Triangle” of Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. Local workers enjoy commutes of less than 40 minutes of travel time to work.

With just over an hour’s drive to three of the major

cities in Texas, catching flights or enjoying a quick “night in the big city” is easier than ever.

Colorado County is home to a number of industrial, healthcare, and retail businesses, with three independent school districts and two rural hospitals, including Columbus Community Hospital who was named in the Top 100 Rural Hospitals in America.

We remain powerful producers of agricultural products as well, with various crops and animals, including rice, corn, cattle, lamb, and more, raised each season.

Education

Columbu s Independent School District, Rice Consolidated Independent School District and Weimar Independent School District all call Colorado County home. The county has a combined student enrollment of over 3,500 students and an average four-year graduation rate of nearly 90 percent.

The districts each offer experienced educators and small teacher/student ratios, as well as career, technical and vocational opportunities, audio/visual and healthcare classes, athletics, fine arts, and much more.

Garwood Elementary School, located in the Rice CISD, was awarded the prestigious title of a National Blue Ribbon School in 2019.

Colorado County also has two private Catholic Schools for students grades Kindergarten through eighth: St. Anthony Catholic School of Columbus, and St. Michael Catholic School of Weimar.

Nature & Outdoor Activities

Is hunting your bag? Colorado County has long been regarded as a hunter’s paradise. We are home to the “Goose Hunting Capital of the World” and have entertained many celebrities over the years. Eagle Lake and the entire county is prime hunting grounds for deer, squirrel, quail, rabbit, dove, duck and much more. Spanning over 2,000 acres, Big Easy Ranch, a members and quests only sporting club is highly regarded to be one of only two hunting lodges in Texas endorsed by both Orvis and Shooting Sportsman.

Pintail Hunting Club in Garwood oversees in excess of 30,000 acres of owned and leased land and specializes in providing its hunters with the fullest ‘shotgunning’ experience. From the early September teal season to the last snow goose hunt in February, the action never stops. Whether you want to tube float into the sunset, hunt at daybreak, or boat, fish, four-wheel, walk, bike, job, or bird watch - Colorado County invites you to take off your boots and stay awhile!

EXPLORING Columbus

THE COURTHOUSE is the third courthouse and was built in 1890. It is a combination Classical Revival and Greek Revival style. The central bell tower and roof were destroyed in the 1909 storm. They were replaced with the current central domed Tiffany-style skylight.

TATE-SENFTENBERG-BRANDON HOUSE was constructed in 1867 by local businessman Phocion Tate. The house was sold in 1887 to Adolph Senftenberg, a local merchant who added the second floor and Eastlake style porches. Kenneth Brandon purchased the home in 1900, and added modern amenities to the property. The house operated as a historic house museum from the late 1960s to 2006. The home is the birthplace of J. Waddy Tate, former Mayor of Dallas.

THE WATER TOWER/ WAR MEMORIAL MUSEUM was built in 1883 and has 32-inch walls. It served as water tower and firehouse until 1912. It now houses the Confederate Museum operated by the Shropshire-Upton Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy.

The Second Empire-style STAFFORD OPERA HOUSE was built by Robert Stafford in 1886. Originally, it housed the Stafford Bank downstairs and a flat-floored opera house upstairs. The white two-story house next door was the house Robert Stafford built for his family.

Brunson

built THE BRUNSON BUILDING in 1891 and used it as a saloon until about 1919. He built the adjacent building in 1896. It retains much of the original Victorian styling. It now houses Live Oak Art Center and Courtyard Wine Bar.

Built in the 1860s of cypress wood on land owned by Robert Robson, the charming CARRIAGE STEP HOUSE is now a tea room and bed and breakfast. Contact the owners to make your reservations.

The two-room ABRAM ALLEY LOG CABIN/ ANTIQUE TOOL MUSEUM was built in 1836 after the Alleys returned from the “Runaway Scrape.” It is constructed of oak logs found near the Alley property at the Atoscosita Crossing south of Columbus. It was moved to Columbus and restored in 1976. Preserved since the Texas Revolution, this oak log cabin houses tools, furnishings, and artifacts. Shown by appointment only. Call 979-732-8385 to schedule a tour.

The MEWES-GANT HOUSE was built in nearby Alleyton by Rudolph Mewes (pronounced “Mavis”). In 1978, it was brought from the Gants and moved to Columbus and restored by preservationist Laura Ann Rau. The original German stenciling can still be seen on the walls of this quaint little house.

Built in 1850, THE OLD BRICK STORE is the oldest brick building in Columbus. It was owned and occupied by Thomas A. Harris, a physician, from 1850 until 1867. From 1912 until 1979, the Fehrenkamps as a grocery store operated it. It now houses a clothing boutique.

Ira and Dilue Rose Harris built THE DILUE ROSE HARRIS HOUSE in 1858. It is of concrete construction and boasts a basement that originally had a dirt floor. Dilue participated in the “Runaway Scrape” at the end of the Texas Revolution and wrote her “reminiscences.”

THE EHRENWERTH BUILDING is the dominant building on the west side of Milam Street. The 1873 two-story commercial structure was built of bricks from a local kiln in Italianate style.

As seen on The Texas Bucket List, THE SANTA CLAUS MUSEUM is a one-of-a-kind museum featuring thousands of unique Santa figurines, music boxes, dolls, dishes, ornaments, artwork, needlework, and photos from all over the world.

THE TOWNSENDWEST HOUSE was built by Marcus and Annie Townsend in 1890 and is Victorian in style with Eastlake embellishments. Townsend was a state representative and senator and sponsored the bill to buy the Alamo. Thurmond and Erma West bought the house in 1906.

MAGNOLIA DAYS Family Festival

Come on down to Columbus the third weekend in May and join the Columbus Chamber of Commerce for the annual Magnolia Days Festival! Held on the Courthouse Square, under the shade of 100-year-old live oak and magnolia trees, the Magnolia Days Festival is fun for the whole family.

While you’re here, step back in history and take a self-guided walking tour or guided tour to view many of Columbus’ historic buildings. An Art & Culture Excursion

An experience focusing on art and cultural experiences

Start your day with breakfast at Schobels in Columbus. Then head down the road to Garwood and visit Eastman Gallery for some of the finest art pieces in the Lower Colorado Valley.

After visiting Eastman Gallery, head a little further down the road to Nada to check out the amazing architecture of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the historic stone grotto altar.

Next, travel back toward Eagle Lake and check out the fascinating Eagle Lake Depot Museum, Prairie Edge Museum and stroll the historic downtown Square.

For lunch, head back into Columbus for some famous Mikeska’s Barbecue.

After lunch, visit Grand Oaks Antiques & Gifts, Hometown Goods, Kay Klauber

Rise and shine! Wake up and head to Maria’s for a fantastic, authentic Mexican breakfast. Try the breakfast tacos, some of the best in the county. After breakfast, head out to explore the dozens of historical markers chronicling our area’s history in Columbus. Use the map on this page as a guide to a small sample of markers that tell the stories of our county.

It’s a sure hit with kids and grownups alike.

Once you are done with lunch, take a leisurely drive through the countryside along US 90. This will allow you to follow the route of the Old Spanish Trail through the historic Southern Pacific Railroad Underpass and into the town of Weimar.

Celebrate Weimar’s German heritage at the Heritage Society Museum - complete with a full set up of a newspaper printing press and an old doctor’s office and pharmacy! Start your day with breakfast at Beckey’s just off the Square in downtown Columbus. Then take a stroll to the Santa Claus Museum, Alley Log Cabin, and Dilue Rose Harris House.

Pass the grand, Spanish-inspired architecture of the Columbus Fire Station, and wind your way back into the Downtown National Register District, where you’ll find our historic 1890 courthouse. If court isn’t in session, take a stroll up to the second floor and admire the Tiffany glass dome - a rarity among Texas courthouses.

Stop by the Stafford Opera House to visit the friendly Columbus Chamber of Commerce staff, and then hit The Silver Barn, Sunshine Design, Daughters with Spirit, Donna’s Attic, and other area shops before lunch at Schobels, Los Cabos, Mikeska’s BBQ, Keyser Market or Nancy’s.

For your afternoon adventure, hop in your car and take the historic driving tour of Columbus that features the Historic Stafford Opera House and more.

Colorado County Fair

Do you love a down home, boot stompin’ good time? Then grab your boots and hat and head to the Colorado County Fair. Held every September at the Colorado County Fairgrounds in Columbus, you’ll have a blast at the rodeo, barbecue cook-off, tractor pull, carnival, concerts, pageants, livestock show, parade and more. See y’all at the Fair!

Ladies Night Out

Thousands of ladies (and gentlemen) pack Columbus the first Thursday of December each year for the wildly successful Ladies Night Out shopping and social extravaganza. Enjoy shopping, wine tasting, and food from vendors located in the historic Stafford Opera House in Columbus, outside on Spring Street and from merchants around town. This is a holiday shopping experience you don’t want to miss!

Magnolia Days Festival

Big time fun in small town Texas! The annual Magnolia Days Festival takes place the third weekend of May in Columbus, and it’s two days of non-stop fun, shopping, music and food. Treasure hunters will find loads of goodies at the vendor marketplace. From handmade soaps and candles, jewelry, clothes and unique decor, it is a shopper’s paradise. History buffs will marvel at the homes on the historic homes tour. The tour also includes the Santa Claus Museum, which was featured on the Texas Bucket

Hit the river for family fun!

Paddling the Colorado River through the town of Columbus, you have the opportunity to see wildflowers, birds, turtles and more! This 6.5 mile paddling trail can take anywhere from two to five hours to complete. The peaceful waters and calm rapids will give you a wonderful day on the Colorado River.

It’s called “The Big One” for a reason! Boasting crowds in the hundreds, Columbus Country Market launched in 2014. Community volunteers lead the market with support from the Columbus Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau. The Country Market promotes healthy choices while supporting local farmers, gardeners, cooks, bakers, craftspeople, and other artisans. Vendors sell everything from breakfast tacos, tamales, hot coffee and fresh produce including berries, greens, carrots, beets, squash, onions, tomatoes and herbs, to homemade baked goods like pies, breads and cakes, to fresh gulf shrimp, local farm raised beef and eggs, jewelry, crafts, plants, jams, jellies, local olive oil, local honey, handmade soaps, homemade

soups, yummy Filipino egg rolls and lots more. Market guests are encouraged to enter a monthly drawing for $50 in Country Market gift certificates. It’s free to enter and two winners are chosen each month.

Saturdays on the Square

EVERY SATURDAY EXCEPT LAST OF MONTH • 8AM-NOON

A weekly outdoor market of local vendors offering home baked goods, handcrafted items, locally grown fruits and vegetables and more. From yard eggs to native Texas plants, coins, and jewelry, market goers are sure to walk away with a bag or two at Saturdays on the Square. Potted plants, floral arrangements, pottery and lots of unique finds are waiting for eager shoppers at Saturdays on the Square.

Thunder by the Colorado

TBC strives to provide safe, fun, affordable, family oriented entertainment, with the goal of reviving hot rod truck and tractor pulling excitement for local fans and fans across the state of Texas. Thunder by the Colorado is held the first weekend in May each year. Come watch us hook to one of the awesome Bungart X-Factor sleds!

Columbus Municipal Golf Course

Columbus offers a 9-hole course that features tree-lined fairways and water on seven holes, as well as the chance to spot the white-tail deer that frequently roam the course. The design incorporates a good mixture of holes: some play short, but others are of a more standard length.

Texas Independence Relay

The Texas Independence Relay is an annual 100-mile race that retraces the path of the Texas Independence Trail from Gonzales to Houston, and all three cities in Colorado County are stops along the race.

Fourth of July

It’s fireworks and fun for the entire family at the annual Fourth of July festivities in Columbus. Enjoy spending family time at the City Pool free of charge. After the sun goes down, the dazzling fireworks show is the perfect end to the nation’s birthday celebration.

Nesbitt Memorial Library

It’s easy to get lost in the expansive, carefully preserved collection of books - both old and new - at the Nesbitt Memorial Library. The Nesbitt Memorial Library is the municipal library of the City of Columbus, named in honor of the family of Lee Quinn Nesbitt, who financed the construction of the building. The collection of the city’s previous municipal library, the Mansfield Memorial Library, which was named in honor of Joseph Jefferson Mansfield, who provided the land for the building and its initial collection, was absorbed into that of the Nesbitt Memorial Library. The library has a meeting room that can accommodate about 70 people, complete with a kitchenette, projector, large screen and sound system. The archives of

the Nesbitt Memorial Library include the Texas Collection, which contains about 4,000 books about Texas, more than 50 collections of documents and over 6,000 photographs of every known existing issue of every known Colorado County newspaper, school annual, maps and more. The library is home to a brilliant doll collection, on permanent display in the children’s section. The collection includes over 200 dolls and artifacts from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Fine Arts & Fine Brews

The Live Oak Art Center, housed in the historic 1891 Brunson Building, is dedicated to promoting the fine arts, expanding art education and enhancing cultural enrichment. The center offers a robust permanent collection, a diverse and exciting exhibition schedule and a variety of community education programs. Admission is always free and open to the public.

Just a short walk from the LOAC is Hound Song Brewing Company. Located in the historic Harbert’s Garage, Hound Song offers national award-nominated craft beer, best enjoyed on their spacious patio or their newly renovated indoor seating areas. Hound Song hosts live music, food trucks and more.
