Growing Up Jefferson What I Did on My Christmas Vacation

Some might want to write like Hemingway, or James Lee Burke. Maybe Stephen King. But my author of choice is Rick Bragg. From reading his books, I believe we think alike. However, he is able to put those thoughts to words much better than I, leaving me to say, “I wish I could write like Rick Bragg and I think.” Now I know Rick Bragg had nothing to do with my childhood Christmas so let me explain. He is a prolific writer that never seems to run out of subjects to describe. Of course, he has deadlines from publishers or magazines. I must think slower than he. It takes a good while for me to get an idea worth writing about. But here goes my thought process. We had snow in East Texas not too long ago. It was a blizzard-like accumulation that dumped almost three inches on the

ground, closed businesses, topped sales for the month of January for grocery stores, kept cars off the roads and kids home from school. My mind equates snow with Christmas, although I never remember it actually snowing here on Christmas Day. I probably get that association from movies and Christmas cards but I’m not sure. The first year my wife and I were married it snowed on Christmas, but that was at her parents’ home in Northern New Mexico. And it was spectacular, too, just perfect. At least, until late on Christmas Eve when I thought I was having a heart attack. I wasn’t, but I was thinking what a sense of humor God must have. It turned out to be an overdose of Navy bean soup and an alcoholic beverage. What I have taken all this time to tell you is this is going to be

Saturday’s will incude all day entertainment from a variety of live bands.

Saturday afternoon is the Grand Parade with floats by various sub-Krewe’s and visiting Krewes.

Sunday wraps up the weekend’s festivities with the Children’s Parade. Specially dedicated to children, it features floats filled with kids and extra candy and beads.

About the Krewe of Hebe

KOH was created in 1989 as a social organization to serve as a vehicle for Jefferson business owners to host a wide variety of visitors spending time at the remarkable B&B’s, hotels, motels,

By the 1980’s, Jefferson was well established as a tourist destination in Northeast, Texas.

There were, however, several months during the year when business was slow.

Then, a group of local business owners and citizens pulled together and organized the KOH with the objective of hosting an annual Mardi Gras celebration in Jefferson.

In order to achieve that goal, and raise funds with which to finance the Mardi Gras expenses, the Krewe hosted the first Jefferson Heritage Triathlon in July 1989.

The KOH has since worked over the

years to provide entertainment for the entire family during the Mardi Gras weekend and has been host to several other events and fundraisers over the last 30 years.

The KOH has also been using their fundraising efforts to donate to local organizations for many years.

They have supported Boys & Girls Club, Boo Benefit, Casting for Kids and many more.

In recent years KOH has decided to become involved with the local chapter of Marine Toys for Tots Foundation and is now the official sponsor for the Marion County chapter.

about Christmas when I was a youngster in Jefferson. I still wish I could have written about it like Mr. Bragg would have. But I’ll keep practicing.

Childhood in Jefferson in the 1950’s was made up of a lot of “firsts and lasts,” and “almost heres.” We used them like a calendar-- “first day” of Little League baseball, “last day” of school, and my birthday is “almost here.” But the biggest of these to me, and I believe I speak for the vast majority of Jefferson kids of that time, was Christmas. The Christmas is “almost here” countdown started a few days before the Thanksgiving holiday from school, and was in near full-throated hysteria by our return. At least, you know, for those of us who still expected a visit from Santa. It was prompted on a daily basis in the newspaper with a little box ad at the bottom of the Marshall News Messenger that simply said

“20 Shopping Days until Christmas” with the number of “shopping days” decreasing in each consecutive edition. Of course, that was when stores were closed on Sunday so that didn’t count as a shopping day. I remember trying to work that out in my seven year old brain that if there were twenty-five days until Christmas, why should there be only twenty-one shopping days? Obviously, I was able to see the future, knowing that thirty years later I would be able to shop in a store every day of the week during store hours, and fifty years later, I could type in my Christmas list on a keyboard connected to a little box and screen 24/7. Twenty-one shopping days till Christmas indeed! But all that waiting, the anticipation, the “almost heres” finally gave way to the big enchilada, Christmas Day! I don’t remember any major disappointments and my list was usually filled, although I never got that

pony or much later that Camaro, either. But there was no one really special Christmas. We never had a Christmas trip to Disneyland, or even out of town, not a single “over the river and through the woods.” Of course, my grandmother lived around the corner from us, but still. It came and it went in one big blur of wrapping paper, fireworks, relatives, and turkey. I hoped one day for a special Christmas like I had seen in magazines and television, but that one day never came. And then, we were taking down the tree and it was over.

That tree always stood in the living room, in front of the double window overlooking Vale Street. Well, let me back up on that. When I was in the 4th grade, my parents added on to our house. We now had a den where part of the backyard used to be, along with another bathroom and my Dad’s workshop, later converted to my

room. After that, our tree went in front of the window in the den overlooking Vale Street. I’m not sure if that Vale Street vista had any particular significance, but the other windows overlooked the aforementioned backyard and I guess we wanted to share the joy of our tree with passers-by. You know, the family ride-around at night to look at Christmas lights was the second most popular ride-around all year in Jefferson, the first being following the fire truck when the siren sounded. And that wasn’t seasonal like Christmas lights. But people went all out, not just on their Christmas trees, but also with lights on the house, business, and yard decorations. We had oil cloth on the front door that looked like a gift wrapped box with cut out letters that proclaimed “Merry Christmas.” Daddy was quite the woodworker, and, at one time, we had a life-sized painted plywood

cutout of Santa Claus in the front yard. And on the porch was his sleigh, a bag of toys and his eight reindeer in harness, all of which was illuminated by spotlights. Honestly, I don’t know where they found the time or incentive. There wasn’t much on television then, I suppose. Now, back to the tree. We didn’t go to the woods to cut our tree. It came from Buck Markos’ Grocery Market and Christmas Tree Emporium on Market Street where the present Beth Mead City Park is located. Yes, on that tiny strip of land was a grocery store with off-street parking. Now Christmas Tree Emporium wasn’t really part of the Markos Grocery name, but it might as well have been. It wasn’t the only Christmas tree lot in town, but it’s where we purchased ours annually. Leaning up against that white asbestos shingle sided building every year were Christmas trees for sale.

I have no idea where they came from, but you could buy natural ones, spray-painted silver ones, or almost any color tree you wanted. I remember blue trees, red trees, pink trees and orange trees although I’m not sure how well those sold. None of my friends had a rainbow colored tree in their house. I think I would have liked to have had one of those red ones for some reason, but my Dad always got the silver one, just like he always got the beige Chevrolet. He was nothing if not consistent. But home it came, a Douglas fir, with rough bark and needles that soon started falling with the least provocation. And we decorated it as a family with colored lights, ornaments and the silver filaments that imitated real icicles. That was fun and everyone was happy. That lasted until the tree needles began their descent in earnest and my mother had to vacuum every day. I supposed that

eventually led to us replacing Douglas fir trees at Christmas with Kaiser aluminum trees and a color wheel. It wasn’t the same even if it was modern. All the old varied ornaments were replaced with uniform red balls and we no longer used faux icicles. And it didn’t smell like Christmas anymore. It smelled like the cardboard box it was shipped in to Perry Brothers.

It wasn’t only lights that were in abundance that year. Santa Claus was everywhere. He rode to the Elementary School on the back of a fire truck, passed out paper bags of hard candy, apples, oranges and English walnuts. I never could get next to an English walnut. Not sure why, wrinkled shells maybe. They just look toxic. Then he walked the halls visiting classrooms wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. Santa was a very big deal in Jefferson in 1950-something. And Marshall. He appeared at Joe Weisman’s Department Store every day. Then he was back on that fire truck riding in the Jefferson Christmas parade, throwing out candy to the crowd. I mean, was Santa a fireman? I asked; no one knew, or they wouldn’t tell. I even have a picture of Santa in the foyer of the First Baptist Church. I realize that sounds a little secular by today’s standards, but a lot of our dads were veterans. And if they could defeat Hitler and Tojo, they probably didn’t see much of threat to our Christian heritage from a large man in a red suit lis-

tening to the Christmas lists of a few children who went home happy. Now we had been taught to think for ourselves. Was this the real Santa Claus? Or one of his helpers. And how could he be all those places and still have time to assemble all those toys? Or maybe...Santa Claus wasn’t real. I believe about the third grade we started to investigate this conundrum a little more fully. And, specifically, my cousin Drulaine Hellums and I were playing at her house while her mother was next door and her dad was at work. A mysterious box had appeared in a hall closet that might possibly hold a baton that she had asked Santa for. After some deliberation, we hurriedly opened an undetectable hole in the box about the size of an orange and got a glimpse of a baton. Now, we had never seen Aunt Louise or Uncle Drue working on any sort of twirling routine, so if said baton appeared Christmas morning from Santa Claus we had proof that Santa didn’t bring it. And it did appear. Nothing was said in the days that followed our clandestine espionage, at least to me, but Christmas night at the extended Taylor family gathering, Uncle Drue made the statement to no one in particular, “You know, when you quit believing in Santa Claus, he quits coming.” Convinced both of us on the spot, jailhouse conversion as it were, but we were confirmed believers that night and for at least a year after that. I never found Santa’s se-

cret hideout at my house, and I looked. Not wanting to push my luck, though, I finally accepted that Santa Claus just might be real, but magic, and I was careful to leave no evidence of my search.

Before the main event on Christmas Day, though, my family had a supper tradition—we called it supper then. I don’t know how it started or even when, but we did it every year and I carried it on with my family. It was our menu. We always had fried chicken, homemade pimento cheese sandwiches, and Fritos. We never opened presents on Christmas Eve, but we always had chicken and pimento cheese. This past Christmas, alone in our kitchen and the family somewhere else in the house, I was staring at the bowl of pimento cheese my wife had prepared. I thought of all those times Mama had done that just to keep the tradition alive, even after my Dad passed away and up to the last Christmas she spent at home. I thought how much she really cared for us all. And I missed her. Deeply.

The Fants, my mother’s family, always had Christmas lunch, a big spread with all six siblings’ families usually represented. The younger cousins, of which I was one, drew the card table on which to dine. That was fine with us; we had important matters to discuss among ourselves and we gladly let the adults talk politics, the economy, nuclear bombs and taxes. We had no interest. We wanted to get through with lunch, get

outside and play, and, in later years, take the car through town to see if anyone was out. The Taylor Christmas gathering was that night, and again, almost always six siblings and their families showed up. We opened presents, sang Christmas carols because they were all musically talented, ate even more food and once again, the young cousins dined on the card table. And, again, that was fine. Several of the men were veterans from a war just ended twelve years previously so world conditions were discussed, they relived the Depression, discussed politics again, laughed and just enjoyed each other’s company. That they would travel some distance on Christmas just to be reunited with each other was a thought that was lost on me. I just knew I enjoyed all my cousins and I was in a hurry to leave the adults behind and get outside to play. We were children. But I do regret that I was not more attentive to their stories, that I didn’t ask more questions, and that I didn’t realize that one day it would end.

It’s apparent to me now the reason I didn’t have that one special Christmas was because all my Christmases were special. The families, the card tables, the pimento cheese and even the English walnuts were special, and to me even now, so many years later, they still are. And that “one day” I had hoped for did finally come. It came disguised as a memory.
