For many, Valentine’s Day is written off as a holiday for consumerism and a great excuse to buy a lot of candy . ut I think that idea sells the holiday short. Sure, you can enter any store right now and find aisles full of Hallmark cards, flowers and heart-shaped chocolates, but Valentine’s Day is more than just a money grab.
It’s a time to celebrate loved ones and the sentiment of love itself. Whether that be romantic, friends or family – love should be celebrated. Life moves fast, and sometimes, we need a reminder to slow down and stop and smell the roses.
Valentine's Day doesn’t have to be complicated, and it doesn’t have to cost money – it is a time designated to simply celebrate love.
There's a lot to love in Paris, too, like Kayla Phillips and Riley Collard's Star Wars themed wedding, which was hosted at Cottonwood at Firth Farm and featured decor and details inspired by the beloved franchise.
In this issue, we're also celebrating February's Parisian of the Month, Robert High, who has served the community for decades as an educator, community leader and activist.
So stop, smell those roses, and enjoy this edition of Paris Life. See you next month!

This Korean Drama has it all Romance, Fantasy, Action, Comedy, and Magic. nce you watch the first episode, you are hooked. They ve got you for two whole seasons and it s worth the binge watching. I was enthralled by the CGI, fighting scenes, and the whole story plot. It s a must watch
I ve been waiting so long for season 11 of TWD to hit Net ix. I know many people are ready for this show to end, but I m still very much in love with it. Also, I m super excited for the Rick and Michonne spin off coming in 2024
The show is about this convict who joins a firefighting program and he has to fight forest and save people. The show is very dramatic and I like watching them plan out their rescues.
You don’t have to go to a galaxy far, far away to have a cosmic wedding. With a vivid imagination and a plan, you can create a fantasy wedding here on Earth.
Right here in the good old Milky Way, couples can put together an out-of-this-world wedding worthy of any fantasy movie. That is what Kayla Phillips and Riley Collard did for their wedding last ctober.
I was the girl who had been dreaming of her wedding day since high school. I knew I always wanted a nerd wedding, but I also wanted my future husband to have a say on it as well.
Kayla and Riley met while they were students at Paris unior College and were in some plays together.
ne of them was The Promise, which is the retelling of the life and death of esus Christ.
He played esus. I played a sinner and he forgave me, she said.
It wasn’t love at first sight, but Kayla admitted she did develop a crush on her future husband before their romance began.
In fact, he moved away to attend another college once he had graduated from P C. We had talked, but never dated, she said. ut then, he came back.
We saw each other in the gym one day in February of 2020 and we started dating, she recalled.
Two years later, with the help of Riley and her family and friends, she was planning her fantasy wedding.

couple tried to add a classic touch to the out-of-this-world wedding.
But the main colors for the day came from the Star Wars palette.
“We chose maroon for the dark side and navy blue for the light side,”
“I had looked at some black gowns, but decided on a white lace with champagne undertones that gave me Padme vibes and matched it with a tiara that was rose gold with black

We used Lego Star Wars pieces for the groom’s and groomsmen’s boutonnieres,” she said.
For their part, the bridesmaids were not carrying plain old bou uets you would find at most weddings on
Earth, oh no.
“My girls had lightsaber hilts for bou uets, she said.
What would a Star Wars-themed wedding be without those lightsabers?
“We had a lot of lightsabers,” she said. “We wanted to make sure there were enough for everyone.”
At the reception, guests sat at a table fashionably decorated with spacecrafts of the heroes and villains of the Star Wars series.

“My friend and bridesmaid Sierra antt and I did all the centerpieces and it took a while, mostly because of my procrastination, she said. She was a huge help thanks to her crafty side, but we did have everything done about two weeks before the wedding, I think. Also, ayle and rad Collard were a huge help with planning and letting us use some of their event decorations. I could not have done it without them.”
The cake featured a cutout that looked like a galaxy somewhere out there, with chocolate molded x-wings
at Cottonwood at Firth Farm in Paris.
“I feel like for us the themed wedding was extremely special because we're not the traditional type. I think if we were to do the more traditional wedding, it wouldn't have felt like us,” Kayla said. “We're both huge nerds. The first time I told him I loved him he used Han Solo's line of I know’ and he even proposed to me over a Dungeons and Dragons game. So the Star Wars themed wedding just made sense.”
After the one-of-a-kind wedding, the couple spent a weekend in Dallas to relax.
“We have not honeymooned yet,” she said. We do have plans to go to Disney World in the summer.”
And yes, if you can’t tell by now, the Force is with them. u
ne of the most colorful and intriguing of these historic figures long overlooked until the past few years was ass Reeves, the first lack deputy .S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River, whose connection to Paris is commemorated by a bron e sculpture of the lawman that stands in the Lamar County Courthouse.
Reeves was born in uly of 8 8 in Arkansas, a lack slave to a white family called Reeves. William Reeves moved his family and his possessions in 846 to rayson County, Texas, where the family’s fortunes rose on the cheap land to be had there. ass Reeves grew to stand six feet two inches and often accompanied the owners as they rode and hunted, becoming adept himself at both endeavors and served as a bodyguard for William’s son, eorge Reeves.
When eorge Reeves rode to join the Confederate Army, he took ass Reeves with him as his body servant.
History is sketchy on the details of what happened then some sources say there was a disagreement over a card game but at some point early in the war, ass Reeves escaped to the Indian Territories of klahoma and lived with several different tribes, learning their languages and customs along the way. He also learned the land and honed his tracking skills, and became uick and accurate with firearms.
After the war and the freeing of slaves, he returned to Arkansas and bought land, farming and ranching and married and started a family of children. Some of the history books say he worked as a scout for the .S. Deputy Marshals operating in Indian Territory during those years.
In 875, Isaac Parker was appointed federal judge in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and beefed up the corps of marshals in the area to some 200 deputies to handle the rampant crime in the lands under his jurisdiction. Reeves’ familiarity with the Territories and his facility with the languages brought him to the attention of the judge and he was offered a job.
ver the next 5 years, Reeves became a legendary figure in the area, working alone or with a bare few posse men, and bringing in more
than ,000 outlaws. He is known to have killed 4 men and it was said he never shot a man when it was not necessary for him to do so in the discharge of his duty to save his own life.” He was known for infiltrating outlaw gangs and using disguises to get close enough to his targets to capture them alive often more than one at a time and to escort them back to Fort Smith to stand trial.
As dangerous as it was, Reeves was never seriously injured on the job and the money he earned was uite good for those days.
In 88 , Reeves was assigned to marshal duty with the federal court in Paris, Texas, and continued his work based here. However, no records show if he actually lived in Lamar County during this time, although he must have maintained some residence here. Many sources have erroneously listed Lamar County as Reeves' birthplace, but research shows that while he surely worked here as an adult for some time, and may have passed through the area that would become Lamar County as a child on the Reeves’ journey to rayson County, his life was lived elsewhere.
In 8 6, Reeves’ wife died in Fort Smith, and the following year he was transferred to the Muskogee federal court in Indian Territory. In 00, he remarried.
In 02, Reeves demonstrated his commitment to law enforcement by accepting the arrest warrant issued for his son, Bennie, who was charged with murdering his own wife. Reeves returned two weeks later with ennie in tow. The younger Reeves was jailed, tried and convicted to life in prison but was eventually pardoned after citi ens petitioned the court for his release and it was found he had an exemplary prison record.
In 07, the Marshal Service was superseded by state law enforcement agencies. Reeves joined the Muskogee, klahoma, Police Department at the age of 6 and served for another two years before his kidneys began to fail and he was forced to take to a sick bed.
The legendary lawman died of nephritis in anuary of 0 and is buried in the Agency Cemetery in Muskogee, in a grave that is not clearly marked. ne Internet source says it is located on private property.
For many years, ass Reeves was relatively unknown in American and law enforcement history, but in the last few decades, Reeves’ life and exploits have been rediscovered. He was inducted in 2 into the Hall of reat Westerners of the ational Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in klahoma City, klahoma. Since then, several statues have been dedicated to Reeves, one in Fort Smith, and a bridge over the Arkansas River near Muskogee was renamed in his honor. Several books historical fiction, as well as scholarly, fact-based works on his life and career, have also been published. ne of those authors is Reeves’ great-nephew, himself a retired federal judge.
In 20 0, in Paris, civic leader, local historian and art collector Dr. William Hayden and his wife commissioned a bron e statue of Reeves and donated it to the county, after learning about the lawman’s reputation and connection to the area. Created by renowned lack sculptor Eddie Dixon, it stands atop a dark wood cabinet in the stairwell landing on the north side of the building and depicts Reeves with his gun and his large mustache and his well-tailored clothing, as described by the writers of the time.
Lately, Hollywood has come to recogni e the uni ue story of ass Reeves, starting with depictions in a wide variety of movies and episodes of television shows dealing with lawmen and other historical figures of the American West. In 20 5, one such show forwarded a theory proposed by historian Art urton that Reeves known to ride a white or gray horse and to use disguises in his work and to speak several Indian languages was the original inspiration for The Lone Ranger, a popular fictional character in early radio and television shows, books, comics and movies.
Reeves was played by David ayasi in Hell on the order 20 and Delroy Lindo in 202 ’s The Harder They Fall, and has been featured in other shows and TV mini-series such as Legends of Tomorrow and “Watchmen.”
He was the subject of a feature article in the uly 202 edition of Texas Monthly detailing his resurgence in popular culture.
Recently, it was announced that Hollywood screenwriter producer actor Taylor Sheridan will expand his ellowstone universe with another limited series to feature ass Reeves, an offshoot of his previous pre uel, 88 .
Critically acclaimed ritish actor, David yelowo, will play Reeves in the six-part limited series called 88 The ass Reeves Story. While filming has not yet started, yelowo himself has gone on the record that he will play Reeves and has talked about learning to ride for the part. Actors in the ellowstone cast have posted Facebook images of yelowo at Sheridan’s os ue County, Texas ranch in full western gear and mounted on cowboy-kitted horses, but Paramount Studios has not yet announced a release date for the series.
Also said to be in the works is a mini-series based on a 2006 autobiography of Reeves ac uired by Ama on Prime Video. Co-produced by famed Hollywood actor Morgan Freeman, the series is reported to be set to film under the title of “Twin Territories.”
In ctober of 2022, ARTE, a producer of content for European television, came to Paris to shoot footage for a TV report on Reeves, who came to the studio’s attention through research on the unknown history of America’s Black cowboys.
We discovered the story of ass Reeves and we thought that his life was really interesting and rich,” said Tam Melacca, the director of the piece, via email. His career is impressive and illustrates all the great events of American history at the end of the th century the Civil War, the abolition of slavery, the con uest of new territories... He alone embodies many of the myths of America and we wanted to put the spotlight on this incredible and forgotten journey.”
Malacca hired Ernest Marsh, a film stuntman and historical reenactor who speciali es in portraying ass Reeves, and the actor and the crew visited Allison Wallace’s Bottom Dollar Ranch, northeast of Paris, to film Marsh as Reeves. The ranch boards horses and gives riding lessons to the public.
We were at the ranch for about 2 hours, said Marsh, who has worked in a number of recent films, not all as the character of ass
Reeves. They filmed me saddling a horse we borrowed at the ranch and riding it through a pasture. We visited the courthouse to see the statue there and met with the county judge, randon ell, as well as seeing the Eiffel Tower with the cowboy hat.
Marsh said he was contacted by ARTE after they searched the internet for ass Reeves reenactor and contacted Wallace after googling Paris, Texas ranch. The filmmakers said the finished documentary should air in Europe sometime this year and would be narrated in French.
ass Reeves’ life and his storied career and his dedication to maintaining law and order in a lawless land have rightfully passed
The subject matter that I am compelled to share today was inspired by a look in the mirror. I shave my head daily due to the hairs on the top of my head being pretty much nonexistent. I have two hairstyles, the eorge efferson or the Mr. Clean . lol. I am reminded of a verse in the bible found in Matthew 0 0 that says, The very hairs on your head are all numbered.
For some of us, od’s job of counting the number of hairs on our heads is getting easier by the day, but I believe there is an important lesson even in my humor. od is aware of the changes we experience and even the impact of those changes in every area of our lives. e encouraged that od knows, He cares, and is present to give us support and guidance every step of the way.
Change is very difficult. Studies show that people fear change as much as they fear public speaking. The fear of change is the most common fear we experience. When our world is shaken, we lose stability, we feel insecure, and we grasp for anything that can bring us certainty. Though our world may be shaken, od’s world remains steady and solid. The reason change never threatens od is because He knows what is going to happen even before it happens. It’s ama ing that od sees all of our lives with clarity, but we see our lives and
future through a mist. The ible confirms, Malachi 6 For I am the L RD I do not change therefore you are not consumed, sons of acob .
The most common reaction to change is to worry. We believe that if we think about our problem enough, we can figure it out. Sometimes we can figure things out but more often than not our thought process in these times leads to more worry, more confusion and desperation. When we start to worry, we must remember that od knows everything about us, and he also knows every aspect of change that we are experiencing. His infinite knowledge and genuine compassion can relieve our worries and give us confidence in His future for us, no matter how many hairs we are losing!!
I’m encouraged by the words we find in the bible in Peter 5 7, Casting all your care upon him for he cares for you . So, what are you saying Pastor Mc uire I’m going to trust the man that knows the number of hairs that are on my head because I am confident, he is always present with me, constantly counting every day because the number decreases every day in my case!! Lol
Hair loss in my case is inevitable, but my faith grows daily knowing how much od knows about me and how much he loves me despite my flaws.u
igh was the recipient of nited ay s Lifetime ervice ward in . ere, he gives his response to the honor.
Robert High is February’s Parisian of the Month. He has served the community in many ways; as an educator, a community leader and an activist. He has been recognized on the local, state and national levels, including by former United States Presidents Barack Obama and George Bush, as well as the US Congress.
Tell me a little bit about yourself and your role in the community.
I was born in Marshall, and got a scholarship to attend East Texas State in Commerce. I was one of the first black students on campus in 65. I was a civil rights marcher while in high school. I am currently the AACP president and chair of the Kiwanis Club of Paris's Community Service Committee.
In 20 6, I was Lamar County History Maker of the year. I've been Educator of the ear, nited Way chairperson, and was the first African American Chair of the Lamar County Chamber of Commerce. I have been the voice of the Paris Wildcats on Friday night football for over a decade on K S radio. I also announce basketball, softball, soccer and track.
As chair of Kiwanis' Community Service Committee, I help to organi e workers for the Pumpkin Festival, ring bells for Salvation Army, distribute gifts to nursing home and assisted living residents and deliver 422 food boxes at Christmas. The logistics are mind-boggling. ne thing I do is to get the police chief and sheriff to deliver boxes. It is important for citi ens to see them in a non-law enforcement light.
You’ve been very involved in serving Paris and Lamar County. How did that begin?
It began with the belief that we should use our od-given talents to make the community in which we live a better place to live.
You spent many years serving Paris in education. What was the most rewarding part?
The most rewarding part was seeing my students become productive members of society and not a burden upon it.
What made you decide to pursue a career in education?
My career choice was medicine. I have always excelled in science. In 64 I won the regional science fair at Kilgore College in the field of uclear Science. That's how I got a scholarship to East Texas State. I had gotten a Bachelor's degree and was in grad school and set to go to Meharry Medical College in ashville, Tennessee. I came home one day and my wife told me she was pregnant.
My response was, we are going to have a baby. To which she replied, we are going to have three babies.
Crockett unior High in Paris had a science teacher pass away right at the beginning of school. I was asked to help them out until they could find someone.
Forty-seven years later, they were still looking.
What impact do you hope to have on other Parisians?
e has been recogni ed many times throughout the years for his efforts and his service to the community including former President Barack bama, who congratulated him on his retirement and years in education.

I hope to serve as a positive role model. It is very important to me for others to see African Americans in a positive light as leaders and contributors.
What advice would you give to younger you?
Education is the key to success. If you can think it, you can do it. But success will begin and ends in the classroom. I have seen racial prejudice all my life. oung people need to know that it exists and be ready to keep their eyes on the pri e. u
Valentine’s Day may as well be tagged Sadie Hawkins Day in apanese culture, as men are the ones who receive gifts on the special day. As is customary, women wait a month later, on March 4, to receive gifts on what is known as White Day.
While the history of Valentine’s Day in the nited States and Europe goes back to a pagan festival that was celebrated almost 2,000 years ago, the lover’s day is relatively new in apan. The holiday is widely believed to have arrived in apan in the 0s when Moro off, a famous apanese confectionery company, started a marketing campaign to encourage people to buy and send chocolates to loved ones on Feb. 4.
Influenced by American culture, apanese department stores started selling heartshaped chocolates and other gifts. As it was mainly ladies who shopped at leisure in department stores, items sold were usually intended for men thus the tradition of women giving presents to the men in their lives became popular.
Valentine’s Day became more popular throughout the 50s when some other businesses and department stores started selling heart-shaped sweets, packed in cute boxes and romantic wrappings. It was clearly for commercial purposes in the beginning, but gradually became a new apanese custom.
It would be another 25 years or so before women would get their day. First initiated in 77 as Marshmallow Day by candy company Ishimura Manshodo in a commercial attempt to return the favor to women, the celebration did not gain in popularity until the ational Confectionery Industry in 80 changed the name to White Day to reflect the white color of the marshmallow.
Since then, it has become easier for people outside the confectionery industry to enter the market. The name White Day is registered as a memorial day by the apan Anniversary Association as a day established by Ishimura Manshodo, according to sources.
Although the holidays are a month apart, similarities exist in the types of chocolates given based on relationships. For instance, iri choco is a type of chocolate given to those the giver wants to show appreciation with no love interest intended. Included are co-workers, siblings, parents or others who have shown support to the giver. More expensive and often of high uality, sophisticated designs, honmei choco are the chocolates appropriate to give to a loved one, or for whom the giver has romantic feelings.
The apanese term, tomo choco, refers to the exchange of chocolate, or other gifts, between friends. The custom dates to the early 2000s, when girls and women started sending chocolate as a token of friendship, often hosting girls’ parties with chocolates while others secretly bring gifts to their friends to exchange at school or work.
While both Valentine’s Day and White Day have lost some popularity recently, sources indicate the tradition is still very much alive and the shops still overflow with sweets and gifts throughout February and March.
ot just chocolate, but presents such as shirts, neckties and other handy items are also bought and given as gifts, but it is still sweets that are the majority, as stated in a blog entry at japanwondertravel.com. u

My very gentle Valentine, Since for me you were born too soon, And I for you was born too late. God forgives him who has estranged Me from you for the whole year. I am already sick of love, My very gentle Valentine.
As Valentine's Day approaches, it is said that love fills the air, and there are plenty of things to do around Lamar County for the unofficial public holiday and religious feast day.
With options like a fancy meal at local establishments like Paris olf Country Club or Shogun Steakhouse, food and a night out at Time Flies Vintage ar or 07, or a fun activity at Paris Lanes or the Trail de Paris, there is plenty to do.
The history of Valentine's Day is complicated and believed to have originated in Roman times, with a pagan ritual called Lupercalia. According to History.com, Pope elasius eventually outlawed the rite around the same time he declared February 4 as the feast of Saint Valentine's Day in honor of the martyred priest.
The day became associated with love after eoffrey Chaucer penned the 82 poem Parlement of Foules. There have been other associations, too, including a rueful mention by phelia in William Shakespeare's 5 - 60 tragedy Hamlet.
The tradition of sending Valentine's greetings goes as far back as the Middle Ages, although written notes of affection
didn't appear until after the 400s. The oldest known greeting was a poem written by Charles, Duke of rleans, to his wife in 4 5 while imprisoned in the Tower of London after being captured in battle.
The rest is history, including a apanese marketing mistake in 6, which saw women giving chocolate gifts to men, a tradition that still exists today.
Even if the consumerism aspect of the unofficial holiday isn't your thing, there is plenty to do among the prairies of Lamar County.
Families can enjoy a day of sunshine, barbecue and water-based fun at Lake Cook Park, located on County Road 700. The park is 800 acres and features plenty of fishing, a pier, a playground and a pavilion open 7 a.m. to 0 p.m. every day.
There's also the Trail de Paris, which stretches from the Chaparral Rail Trail's entrance into southwestern Lamar County to lossom's extension along the same rail corridor. Plenty to do on the approximately 0-mile-long trails. ou can even stop for a picnic!. u

Ever since Sony dipped its big toe in the video game waters, it has been reshaping the way we interact with virtual worlds. Its first PlayStation controller button layout may have been based on the Super intendo’s button configuration, but it went a step further with a second shoulder button and ergonomic grips. That was followed by the Dual Analog Controller that introduced double thumbsticks, which was the predecessor to the first DualShock controller that gave PlayStation players vibration feedback. Its successor was the DualShock 2, which added pressure sensitive buttons.
The PlayStation 3 era got a bit weird as Sony first released the SixAxis controller that lacked the vibration feedback but included motion control, and then released the DualShock 3 that was essentially the SixAxis with haptic feedback. oth the SixAxis and DualShock 3 were wireless controllers. As you might have guessed
by now, the PlayStation 4 era brought the DualShock 4. It added a center touchpad and LED lights and ditched the Start and Select buttons for Share and ptions.
The PlayStation 5 was bundled with the DualSense controller universally hailed as the best first-party basic controller produced to date. In addition to all that the previous DualShock controllers could do, the DualSense uses haptic motors for vibration feedback, similar to what’s found in cellphones, and it has dual microphones and a speaker built in.
To date, Sony has not produced a pro version of any of its controllers. If PlayStation users wanted something similar to the offerings of the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller, a premium controller offering interchangeable parts and programmability, they needed to turn to a third-party manufacturer such as Aim or Scuf. I turned to Scuf for my pro-level controller, which has been a godsend as I grind for
camos in Call of Duty Modern Warfare II because the Reflex Pro comes with remappable rear buttons that help keep my thumbs on the sticks instead of pushing buttons. It comes with a price though My Scuf cost me 24 . , compared to 6 . for Sony’s DualSense. The latest Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 costs 7 .
Seeing a market for pro-level controllers, Sony is tossing its hat into the fray with the DualSense Edge. This high-end controller is highly customizable with swappable stick caps, remappable back buttons, function buttons for setting multiple game profiles, software to fine-tune stick sensitivity and dead ones, swappable thumbsticks, a lockable braided S -C cable and adjustable trigger stops. And yes, all of this customizing comes with a price . a touch more expensive than Xbox’s elite controller but still less than competitor PS5 pro controllers.
The DualSense Edge comes with two standard stick caps, two high dome caps, two low dome caps, two half dome caps, two half dome back buttons, two lever back buttons, a cable connector housing and a carrying case. That’s uite a bit of goods for the price. The DualSense Edge became available an. 26, and yes I pre-ordered it. Due to publishing schedules, I didn’t have it in my hands at the time of writing. However, by the time you can read this, I’ll be putting the controller through its paces.
I’ll let you know what I think in an upcoming article. For now, enjoy this month’s Game of the Month. u

With social distancing limiting our ability to connect and physically interact, daily screen time has sure seen a jump. For many of us, now, screen time is our window into the world. Friends, family, fitness, work, shopping and learning all happen online everywhere in the world. So then how do we get used to the new normal without negatively impacting the health of our children

· Children under 2 years of age should be subjected to less than one hour per day of screen time with parental guidance.
· Children 2-5 years of age should be subjected to one hour per day of screen time. Moreover, children should be exposed only to educational, interactive, and non-violent material with parental guidance. Children 5 - 8 years of age should be subjected to 4-6 hours with filtered parental controls.

· Impaired sleep Children cannot get a uniform and consistent sleep pattern as the blue light from the media screens delay the release of melatonin and impacts a child's circadian rhythm. As a result of lack of sleep, studies show that children with a lot of screen time have elevated levels of developing behavioral issues.
· besity Since children can get hooked on to their favorite TV shows or screen games easily compared to adults, it is hard to get them off their screen time and as a result, their outdoor activity time i.e., playing in the playground or going out on friendly neighborhood bike rides declines resulting in less physical activity and conse uently resulting in health problems such as obesity.
· A decline in social and learning skills Children who spend too much time on screen conse uently miss out on learning social interaction skills such as playing with other children, taking turns, sharing, communicating needs, etc., which can lead to delays in attention, language learning and creative thinking.
· Increase cases of Myopia or nearsightedness due to fre uent and prolonged use of screen times Scientists and ophthalmologists are e ually concerned about the negative impact of decreased outdoor time and excess screen time on the eyes of children. Medical experts are trying to understand how myopia of nearsightedness develops and progresses. It occurs when the eyeball is too long or the eye focusing power is too strong, causing the light rays to focus in front of the retina instead of on it, which creates a blurry image. While glasses and contact lenses can correct a child's vision, research shows that having severe myopia puts children at risk for retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.

Martin McDonagh, writer director of that exceptional film In ruges, has scored again with the same duo of rendan leeson and Colin Farrell. The anshees of Inisherin, released in time for the awards circuit, is delighting audiences and critics around the globe. And lest this sounds like one of the film’s marketing hacks, may I refer you to the film’s list of festival success It took home eight nominations from the 80th olden lobes, something not seen since Cold Mountain in 2004. What struck me as remarkable is the simplicity of the film. P draic S illeabh in Farrell and Colm Doherty leeson have been lifelong friends and drinking buddies. ut one day, Colm, who considers himself to be a fine fiddler and composer of folk music, decides that he is growing older and needs to do something more than wasting his time with Padraic who, it is true, is considered a bit dim by the few souls who live on this tiny, fictional island off the Irish coast.
So, when Padraic comes to call for their short walk to the pub, Colm has locked the door and won’t let him in. Padraic retreats to the pub, orders his pint and watches as Colm finally comes and sits by himself outside. It’s a mystery.
Padraic is devastated, even more so after Colm explains that he feels like he needs to be doing something more i.e. composing than wasting time with Padraic. Everyone on the island soon knows Padraic’s woe. His sister, Siobhan played by Irish actress Kerry Condon , with whom he shares a small house, speaks to Colm and the local priest. Padraic has already spoken to the priest. If you have seen the trailers on TV, then you know that Colm has been getting an earful of It’s not very nice.
The repetition of that phrase is, possibly, the only thing of amusement in McDonagh’s film. ecause it soon turns dark. Colm is so determined to increase his composing, that he threatens to cut off a finger with sheep shears every time Padraic speaks to him. A threat, certainly, that Padraic fails to heed. Even after Colm hands him one.
When Padraic warns off a fiddler from the mainland, who has come to see Colm about his latest composition that happens to be titled The anshees of Inisherin , he goes over and tells Colm he is sorry. That results in a larger number of fingers thrown at his door.
Padraic’s world just continues to narrow. Sioban announces that she has taken a job with a library on the mainland and she’s leaving. And to top it off, Padraic wakes to find his pet donkey, enny who has the run of their house mind , died in the night after choking on one of Colm’s fingers.
ou may ask at this point, what is so wonderful about McDonagh’s film Well, Padraic may be called dim, but he’s bright enough and tenacious enough to not give up on getting his friend back. It sounds cra y, but I’d see it again. Film buffs will recall that McDonagh also gave us Three illboards utside Ebbing, Missouri in 20 7, and know that his films are always a two-edged sword. The anshees of Inisherin is available on demand u
