he North Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce is proud to serve the greater Lago Vista, Jonestown and Point Venture area. The Chamber is the largest business organization on the North Shore of Lake Travis with over 260 members. Our goal is to connect local business leaders to each other in a variety of social settings to give people a place to share ideas, discuss issues, meet local elected officials and promote the advantages of small businesses. I’m pleased to tell you that the attendance at our Monthly Chamber Luncheons has grown this year in part because we have been fortunate to have such a variety of wonderful business and political speakers. Our Coffee with the Chamber events were popular as well, providing local businesses with a platform to share their successes and talk through the strategies and brand awareness program they’ve introduced to gain more exposure for their business. Promoting local businesses and promoting local events go hand-in-hand to bring visitors to our area to enjoy our beautiful surroundings as well as spend money in retail stores and make use of our local services. Events planned for 2020 include Casino Night, Lago Vista La Primavera Bike Race, Jonestown Cajun Festival, July 4th Parade and 5K race, Lago Fest, and the Chamber Challenge Golf Tournament. Turn to the Calendar of Events on page 16 for the dates of these events and more. The Chamber partners with the City of Lago Vista, the City of Jonestown and many community groups to bring you these events. We also appreciate our many volunteers who support these events with their time and efforts. Volunteering at the Chamber is a great way to meet new people, be involved in local events and help make our area a wonderful place to visit and live. Drop by the Chamber office any time to sign up as a volunteer. The area Welcome Center is located at the Chamber office and provides free maps, Chamber membership information, brochures on area attractions including Arkansas Bend Park, hiking information at the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge, and business cards to help you reach out to local businesses for products and services. The Welcome Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Find us in the Casey Professional Building, between Sonic and BBVA Bank. am excited, humbled, and honored to be the 2020 President of the North Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce! The prior board members and officers have done a tremendous job laying a framework for the Chamber, and I am thrilled to once again be a part of the process as we move forward. I want to thank all past presidents, officers, board members, and the staff of Elaine & Anna at the Chamber. Our mission is to serve our members and communities by promoting business growth and tourism. That will continue to be the theme of this Chamber. Our local area is growing, and so too is the North Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce. We will continue to sponsor and support tourism events and resident events such as Casino Night, La Primavera Bike Race, golf tournaments, fishing tournaments, July 4th parade, Lago Fest, and the Jonestown Cajun Fest. These events not only provide first-class entertainment for local residents, but also attract visitors to our town to experience the beauty, charm, the relaxed pace, and to support our businesses with their purchases. And in that vein, I would encourage residents and members to buy local whenever possible: It is not only good for the community and the economy but it’s good for all of us. The Chamber will continue to sponsor our Monthly Luncheons and Coffee with the Chamber meetings providing a place for networking, education, and interaction with other members and with elected officials. All are welcome to these meetings. Simply go to the Chamber website and click on the Events tab to see the dates of upcoming Chamber and community events. We will also fully support our programs to promote local business via social media interviews.

Welcome to the North Shore of Lake Travis The North Shore area is comprised of three growing cities: Lago Vista, Jonestown and Point Venture, with a total population of over 14,000 people. All three cities enjoy shoreline along the north side of Lake Travis.

ATTRACTIONS West of Lago Vista on Farm to Market Road 1431 is the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge, part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Balcones Canyonlands NWR offers some of the best birdwatching and habitat left in Texas for an endangered songbird - the Golden-cheeked Warbler. In addition to birdwatching, the 23,000 acre refuge has hiking trails and scenic observation decks. A popular destination is Sunset Deck which has a spectacular view of the Hill Country and Lake Travis. Programs are available at the Balcones Canyonlands year around, including Bat Walks, Sparrow Fest and the annual Songbird Festival every April. Travis County reopened Arkansas Bend Park in June 2019 between Lago Vista and Point Venture. This impressive 320+ acre park has a playground, camping sites, walking trails and two public boat ramps. Another attraction just west of Lago Vista is Flat Creek Winery and Estate on Singleton Bend Road. The 80-acre estate offers wine tastings, winery tours, bistro dining, on-site lodging, walking paths, lawn games and a newly opened 18-hole championship level disc golf course.

Happy Trails There are trails at Lakeside Tessera at Lake Travis, more in Arkansas Bend Park, another trail system that ends in Jones Brothers Park, and multiple trails at the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge. All of these trails offer sweeping views of Lake Travis, and you’ll be surrounded on all sides by native plants and wildlife common to our area. Lakeside Tessera at Lake Travis on the west side of Lago Vista boasts beautiful crushed-granite trails that start near the pool and pavilion. The combination of the Pool, Burnet Knoll, Turnback Ledge and Heritage Park trails currently offers two miles of beautiful trails. Here you can

meander along Lake Travis, head down to the beach, picnic/volley ball area and inviting swings – all with terrific views of Lake Travis and Turnback Cove. Hit the Trail, Jack The trails at the Travis County Arkansas Bend Park are located at 16900 Cherry Lane in Lago Vista. The park is more than 320 acres, and was recently renovated and opened to the public in early 2019. The new public areas included two boat ramps, a playground, and improved campsites. The trailhead area of the Arkansas Bend Park is located near the entrance where you’ll find a new parking lot and modern restrooms. The Stonewall trail, the Dundee Loop (ADA trail) and the Longjaw Point trail begin here. The Longjaw Loop is located at the day use area near the playground. These are unpaved and natural, multi-use trails. Future trails will be developed on the southern peninsula as part of the second phase of development at the park, the goal being to maintain the landscape in its natural state. The area will also include a new hike and bike trail system which will be perfect as this part of the park boasts the best views of Lake Travis.

Blazing the Jonestown Trails The trail system in Jonestown can be accessed from any of the five parks located on the east side of FM 1431. The chain of parks is comprised of Shady Park, Fireman’s Park, Canyonlands Trail Park, and Jones Brothers Park. The Canyonlands Trail includes natural rock formations, waterfalls and creek bed areas. You’ll find natural cedar bridges, including a 30-foot bridge below the canyon wall and cedar plaques. Along the foot path, look out for a wealth of trees and plants that grow there. Other inter-connected parks include Fireman’s Park and Shady Park. At Fireman’s Park, there are native rock steps and granite walkways that go down into the canyon to link with Canyonlands Trail Park. Shady Park has a native cedar bridge, picnic area, and lots of shade trees. And when you hike to Jones Brothers Park at the end of this trail, don’t miss the stunning kinetic sculpture Soaring Swifts, created by area artist Jim Lapaso, located near Boat Ramp #1. Jones Brothers Park, in addition to hiking, features three boat ramps, fishing from the shore, and playground equipment for children under the oak trees.

Sunset Deck is covered thus creating a wonderful place to take photos of birds in their natural habitat, as well as wonderful shots of the geology of the Edwards Plateau. The Doeskin Ranch area is located north on FM 1174, with both creek-side trails and a rimrock trail for hikers looking for a scenic hilltop view. The Shin Oak Observation Deck is rumored to be the best place to spot the Black-capped Vireo, a rather famous and rare bird that loves our local area as much as we do. A Trail of Two Cities Both Lago Vista and Jonestown are proud of their trails, and rightly so. Both cities are dedicated to improving current trails and looking to develop new trails in the years to come. To give one example, future trails are under development through a partnership with the Turnback Canyon Trail Conservancy, the City of Lago Vista and Lakeside Tessera at Lake Travis all

participating. The Turnback Canyon Trail Conservancy is a non-profit organization formed by volunteers from Lago Vista and surrounding communities committed to developing approximately 20 miles of trail network. Through a public-private partnership, they will use the trails to connect neighborhoods in Lago Vista with Lakeside Tessera, the new city park currently under development at the Cedar Breaks and the Warbler Vista public area located in the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge. The trails are being constructed to service a variety of skill levels and will highlight the beautiful water features and topography in Turnback Canyon. Hike one today, bike another tomorrow and jog on a third the day after. No matter where you choose, the North Shore offers the outdoor enthusiast so many views, so much wildlife and foliage, that it doesn’t seem fair to have all of this beauty in one spot. Oh well! Looking forward to seeing you out on the trails!

Off the Beaten Track… The Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge has eight trails in two main areas: Warbler Vista and Doeskin Ranch. The Warbler Vista trails are just west of Lago Vista on FM 1431. Choose from three trails, then take a break on Sunset Deck, located at the highest point and where you can enjoy spectacular views of Lake Travis and the rolling hills. Needless to say, the views at sunset are best, but you can enjoy the view anytime.

Lago Vista Golf Course – Casual, Memorable & Fun

n the quiet hills of Lago Vista, tucked away on the nor th shore of Lake Travis, there’s a golfing treasure that offers competitive play as well as some of the most breathtaking views in the area. And Chris Godwin, General Manager of the Lago Vista Golf Course, has big plans for the future. “We have a five-year plan to improve the golf course,” said Godwin. “And that’s not just to make it a good golf course, but to have the best golf course in Texas. We have high expectations for great improvements this year. And I don’t settle for good, I want this course to be perfect!” At Lago Vista Golf Course, you’re going to find a golfing experience that’s casual, memorable and, most important of all, fun! “It’s a hidden gem,” agrees Godwin, “This is Hill Country Golf at its finest.” Lago Vista Golf Course is an 18-hole course, a little over 6,500 yards, and it’s a challenging par 72. Godwin has his favorite holes. “It’s all beautiful, but the 16th hole is the one with the panoramic views of the lake, and you can also see the lake on the ninth and 13th. But my favorite is the 11th, it’s a hole that makes you think – you have to hit two really good shots to get close and it’s a tricky green,” laughs Godwin. “Another great hole is the 14th. It’s a par 4, but it’s a risk/reward hole. Big hitters could make an eagle if they hit the green, but it’s so easy to slightly miscalculate and end up in the bunkers,” Godwin adds. Godwin is also the Golf Pro at the Lago Vista Golf Course, and

is ready to help anyone improve their game, from driving to their shor t game. In 2019, a high-end golf simulator was installed in the clubhouse. Put simply, this is a computerized game of golf designed to mimic the real thing, bringing the outdoor experience in a vir tual world inside. Using a standalone screen with realistic 3D graphics, a player hits the ball as you would on the course and, using radar and light sensors, everything is shown onscreen as if you were on the fairway. “You could play a full round of golf on our golf simulator, but I mainly use it for coaching. This high-tech machine can analyze your swing, and that data can help people with their posture, the way they hold each club, and improve their swing to add yards and accuracy to each stroke. It’s amazing,” said Godwin. In his role as General Manager, Godwin sees his day divided between the clubhouse and the fairways. “Over this past year, we were pleased to welcome John Baker to our clubhouse where he has established Baker’s Bar & Grill. Meet ESD District 1: You’re In Safe Hands

tand on any hill on the North Shore, and you will be impacted by the sheer beauty of our hill country with valleys, canyons, and a horizon that is as beautiful at sunrise as it is at sunset and all the hours in between. And keeping our communities safe from the risk of fire comes hand in hand with being able to enjoy the beauty. We are indeed grateful for the wonderful job being performed by Travis County Emergency Services District 1, a Texas Fire Chief's Association "Best Practice Recognized" fire department. The district, under the leadership of Fire Chief Donnie Norman, covers 178 square miles and services approximately 35,000 permanent residents providing fire suppression, Advanced Life Support (paramedic level) emergency medical services, technical rescue, wildland firefighting, fire code enforcement, fire safety education, and fire investigations. The staff has grown from 51 last year to 62 at printing, responding to the impressive growth our

area has been enjoying. To further address the growth, two new fire stations will come online Spring, 2020. One station will be located on Bronco Lane and another on Lohman Ford, which will also house training facilities. Nationally recognized response times will now be achievable with the additional stations. The importance of these response times is critical when an actual fire or EMS emergency exists. The improved response times also helped Travis County ESD 1 achieve a Public Protection Classification 2 from the Insurance Service Office (ISO). The ISO PPC rating is utilized by insurance companies to derive property insurance rates. ISO classifies communities from 1 (the best) to 10 (the worst), based on how they score on the ISO Fire Suppression Rating Schedule, which evaluates system features such as fire department equipment, deployment analysis, operational considerations, staffing, training, response times, communications, and water distribution. evaluation using the schedule to assess a community's fire protection capabilities. Only 1.1 percent of fire departments across the United States have received Class 2 or higher classifications. Chief Norman has been at the helm of the ESD 1 since 2014. His list of academic

preparation, field experience, and certifications is only made more impressive by the number of nationally published articles he has authored and his service as an instructor for the National Fire Academy. Chief Norman and his wife Wendy – a teacher at Lago Vista ISD - have six children and two grandchildren.

Golden-Cheeked Warbler

alcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge (BCNWR) manages habitat for the endangered golden-cheeked warbler and hundreds of other native Texas plants and animals. More than 128,000 people visited last year to enjoy exercising, seeing all the wildlife and foliage up close, and recharging in nature on our public use hiking trails. The BCNWR currently has eight miles of trails spread over three public use areas: five miles at Doeskin Ranch, two and a half miles at Warbler Vista, and a half mile at our headquarters unit. For those that need flat, paved surfaces, we have

the Pond and Prairie Trail located at Doeskin Ranch and the Sunset Deck at Warbler Vista. Other trails are natural-surface, somewhat rocky in spots and have our famous Hill Country topography with elevation changes. But with the effort comes a great reward – there are outstanding, unobstructed views for miles of beautiful Texas Hill Country. Our headquarters office and trails (open only 8:00 am – 4:30 pm Monday through Friday) has two short, flat natural-surface trails. The Post Oak trail is a loop from the visitor contact station to Post Oak Creek, where turtles, birds and deer are often seen.

Our headquarters also offers the Pollinator Path, a short loop through a restored prairie that lights up with colorful flowers in spring, and is blanketed with yellow Maximillian sunflowers in fall. Two new trails are planned to open at Warbler Vista in early 2020. The trails at Doeskin Ranch and Warbler Vista are open 365 days per year from dawn until dusk and entrance is always free. Lago Vista Welcomes the New Vistägo Expansion

ack in 1994, there was Dirt Cheap Signs, a small sign company working out of a garage in Round Rock producing screen-printed and vinyl signs. The company was purchased in 2006 by the husband and wife team, Paula and Chad Hendricks, later changing the name to Vistägo Print, LLC and moving the headquarters to this treasured part of Travis County. The new company immediately developed a website to promote the design of signs and banners, promoting massive growth for the next nine years. Acquiring Austin Promotional Solutions in 2015 and Savant Embroidery in May 2017, Vistägo Print was named one of the fastest growing privately owned companies in America. Vistägo Print was now a major force to be reckoned with in apparel printing and embroidery. Looking to expand in 2020, Chad Hendricks found the perfect piece of land at Lohman Ford Road and Panorama Ridge in Lago Vista. The first phase of the new building will have 21,450 square feet of space, allowing ample room to grow and house the printing and embroidery equipment to create custom signs, banners, hats and apparel. Currently the company employs 42 people but, with this

planned expansion, Vistägo Print plans to hire and train more screen printers, embroidery technicians and customer service representatives in 2020. “We are now a full service apparel and signage printer with everything happening in-house and our quality and expertise is regarded as one of the industry’s best,” said Chad Hendricks. The City of Lago Vista and the North Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce wishes Vistägo Print much success with their new location.
