Notes From The River

By Glenn Ayers

Mr. Fixit He would creep up your driveway in an old Chevy Impala that had already clocked over half-a-million miles. It was his mobile office and shop. There was only room for him to sit and drive. The rest was tools, parts and other fix-it paraphernalia. And why not? After all, he was there to repair your TV, your stove, washer and dryer — perhaps your freezer or refrigerator. If you had a dog in the yard, he’d toot the horn for an escort (a precaution he learned the hard way). Then into your home would quietly tread the thin, wiry answer to your consumer appliance prayers: George Van Buren “Vannie” Norman. You had summoned him in one of three ways: 1. Running into him in the community; 2. Calling him in his shop on the Stone Mt. Road at 9 a.m. and finding him there; 3. Posting a note on the shop’s back door. Vannie Norman began life in 1921 on the old Kent property just off the Moneta Road about where the “Mayberry” project is today. He ended it, July 12, 1998, at his residence in the “Rock House” off the White House Road. In between, were 77 years of unbelievable determination, work and service to the community — essential service. His training was extensive, but mostly self-taught and by the hardest. He got an elementary education at the old Piney Grove School, and that was it. By Pearl Harbor, he was married with two children and one on the way, working at what old-timers in Moneta remember as the feldspar mine. He and his wife, the former Ola Murphy, raised two boys and two girls, wed nearly 57 years at his death.

A medical condition pre-empted him from military service, but it was more than that that drove him from the feldspar pit. He came home one day, slouched wearily in a chair, telling his son, Orbrie, “There’s gotta be a better way to make a livin’ than this.” That night, his eldest remembers, “Daddy made his first radio.” Except it wasn’t that simple, and certainly in no way as miraculous as it sounds. Clinton Craghead tells of his boyhood friend, “Chicken,” studying an international electronic correspondence course from Chicago. Thumbing through “Radio Craft,” one of the old manuals Norman would have used, Craghead says, “‘Chicken’ told me he studied and studied and didn’t think he could ever absorb it. Then one day it just came to him.” Craghead’s nephew, Pete, confirms this. “Vannie told me that many a time. One day it all seemed so simple he couldn’t figure out why anybody couldn’t understand it.” Norman’s daughter, Lorraine, remembers the study lessons. “When Daddy was studyin’ at night, nobody made a peep.” Ola Norman adds, “Lord, no, he was in another world.” It was a brave new world Norman stepped into in the 1950s as the community’s first radio/TV repairman. Working in a little shed behind his parents’ house (that later became his shop), he picked up, repaired and delivered. Color-coded transistors and resistors would often perplex Norman, who was mostly color-blind. Lorraine would help him. “He’d ask, ‘What color’s this’? I’d tell him.” Not much else fooled him. From radio/TV, he expanded to stoves, washer-dryers, then refrigeration. It was the latter that caused him to attend classes at Virginia Western and CVCC. In his ’70s, Norman passed Freon certification exams. Vannie could have made a big living from refrigeration alone, but that wasn’t his way. He helped everyone from the high roller at the lake resort to the farm wife back in the sticks. His calls stretched from Ferrum College to Toler’s Bridge at the Pittsylvania line. “It’s like losing Dr. Sam (Moneta’s legendary physician) all over again,” said his grandson, Jeff Anderson. He made his trips in various cars, that when worn out, sat in his yard as storage bins for repaired appliances not yet delivered. His last vehicle was “Old Yellow,” the ’71 Impala that earned him a cap from General Motors when it clocked 500,000 miles. “It’s tripped 600,000 now,” reported Norman later, “but I don’t need no more caps.” Just before he left this world in 1998, a customer told him: “I don’t know what we’d do without you, Vannie.” “I don’t know what you’d do either,” was his reply. Indeed.

Notes From The River

By Glenn Ayers

CLARK When it comes to good men, the River neighborhoods produced few as good, and none better, than Clark Meador. He was a man of many skills and talents, a loyal and generous neighbor and one who perfectly fit the designation: “Christian gentleman.” Such is often a nondefinable abstraction, but not with Clark. He was the model. Always a hard worker as a youth, he moved from field hand to school bus driver to textile work and later to dairy and cattleman. He would eventually serve on the school board as well as a director of the local fire insurance company and a stalwart on the board of deacons at Radford Church. He told me once of his tough beginnings as a field worker in the Depression. He mostly lived at home, working on the farm, maybe earning extra food and a trifle. (Many hired as plowmen for 25 cents a day.) He landed some kind of work with the W.P.A. that would pay him “cash money” as he called it for a period of time. He had promised a neighbor however, to help “cradle” (cut by hand) his wheat. “So I took in to cradlin’ that wheat, but worked too fast and got too hot. I come mi’near passin’ out, and was too sick next day to take the job that would’a paid me a little dab o’ cash money.” He told me that story twice over the years, so it obviously had been a bitter loss at the time. Clark went to the old Moneta High School and — if you can believe it — they played football back then, circa 1925. The team included present and past students (the “outsiders”), and Clark played in both categories over the years. Apparently, one of the teams won a championship of some kind, and the community put on a dinner for the team. Clark was flum-

moxed somewhat by his privilege to “bring a guest,” and had to go to a relative to find out how to go about asking one. He never specifically told me how this turned out, but I’ve always thought he might have taken my cousin, Lois Ayers, who he would eventually marry. Anyway, he began driving one of Moneta entrepreneur Nobe Martin’s school buses — they were privately owned in those days. From there he went on to the textile trade in Hurt, Virginia. During this time, Clark had married Lois, the eldest daughter of our old patriarch, Harry Ayers, who lived at the head of route 737, now Ayers Road. Harry’s youngest daughter, Sally, married Tommy Morgan, a young farmer in the area, and the two couples — Meadors and Morgans — threw in their lots together. They bought a large farm and beautiful ante-bellum home on the road just beyond its crossing with the Stone Mt. Road. Matter of fact the late Kenneth Crouch reported to me as the approving planning commissioner that his committee to name all Bedford roads for 9-1-1 purposes had chosen “Ayers Road” because of who lived on each end. For a time, Clark and the girls worked in textiles while Tommy handled the farm, until Clark left the industry and they began the dairy. They employed Alan and Sam Cassidy who boarded in the big house that kept others at times, too. Once Sally lamented to me after Tommy’s passing how the house once kept 12 people and now, at times, she was the only one. By this time, Clark was fully into his civic activities, but always with the same honesty and loyalty as when cradling wheat. Also, he kept his interest in football. He brought his two nieces to Staunton River games when they were young, watching the action himself. One night, during a very rainy game, all the fans had left to take shelter or go home. Suddenly, my spotter said to me in the broadcast booth, “Hey look — one guy’s still down there!” It was Clark, water dripping down from his hat brim. This same resolve happened the night the entire board of deacons rose in a huff and resigned at Radford Church, many leaving as members altogether. One didn’t do either — Clark Meador. By 1988, now 77, Clark settled down to the less arduous life of “gentleman farmer.” Tragically, he was not to enjoy it long. His life ended in pain and horror. He was terribly burned in a gasoline fire. He explained it to me from the water tank in the burn unit at UVA hospital. He explained quite coherently how he had accidentally ignited himself while burning out a yellow jacket nest in his backyard. The healing process proved too much for a heart that belonged to his community.

Franklin County

Ken Burns

‘Prohibition’ shown at Westlake Cinema for 100th anniversary By PETER MASON

T

he partnership between the Franklin County Public Library System, the Blue Ridge Institute and Museum at Ferrum College, and Franklin County Tourism held the third installment of the PBS Prohibition Series at Westlake Cinema in late January. The event was sponsored by Westlake Cinema and The Willard Properties. The program is related to the prohibition and the passage of the 18th Amendment, due to the fact that this year marks the centennial or 100th anniversary of the passage. “Prohibition gives us an opportunity to talk about all the different nuances of our nation’s relationship with alcohol,” Franklin County Library marketing and outreach coordinator Christine Arena said. “That goes into the temperance movement, the women’s suffrage movement and lots of other social changes.” The film that was shown was the Ken Burns documentary “Prohibition,” which was shown in three two-hour segments, according to Arena. In total, the documentary is six hours long. The three parts of the film are entitled, “A Nation of Drunkards,” “A Nation of Scofflaws,” and “A Nation of Hypocrites.” “He does a very comprehensive look at a very particular cultural phenomena or time in history and it’s a lot of archival footage,” Arena said. “This documentary goes through all of the conditions and factors that led up to the passage of the 18th

Amendment.” Arena explained that the film covers the politics and the moralities of what was happening in families and households in terms of substance use and abuse. It also goes through the process of gaining the political backbone to pass the 18th Amendment and why it failed. “It was an issue of law enforcement,” Arena said. “There were no resources to back up the enforcement piece of it and the public will just wasn’t committed to the idea of prohibition. The third installment talks about why the amendment wasn’t

successful and what led up to its repeal.” Arena explained that the Ken Burns documentary Prohibition series is a series that should be seen in its entirety because it covers 13 years of history. “I really hope that people have conversation about the role of alcohol and all the different components of it in our society,” Arena said. “There’s the politics, the culture and all the changes that happened during prohibition like women getting the right to vote, as well as what is Franklin County’s role in the moonshining story.” Franklin County tourism director David Rotenizer said that the main focus of these programs is Franklin County’s moonshine heritage and not just the alcohol aspect. “It’s a fine line,” Rotenizer said. “I think we’re doing a good job with it.” The vision for the program as well, according to Arena was to bring together different facets to provide this type of programming. Rotenizer also added that the idea was make sure the whole county was represented and not just one part. Anyone interested in knowing more can visit pbs.org/kenburns/prohibition or ferrum.edu/blueridgeinstitute/onlineexhibits/moonshine. “When we approached the Blue Ridge Museum, they were very interested right off the bat because they have a lot of their historical museum resources. Westlake Cinema was also very interested in showing a Ken Burns documentary on the big screen. They’ve been very supportive, engaged and interested.”

Finley looks forward to S

By SHERESE GORE

erving as the next executive director of the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce feels like a homecoming for Chris Finley. Finley began his new position several months ago on Oct. 28. He stepped into a role that was held for 17 years by former SMLRCC Executive Director Vicki Gardner. “I’m really excited to be back at Smith Mountain Lake,” Finley said. Finley said that during his first couple of weeks as head of the SMLRCC, he had one-on-one meetings with staff members and attended a Virginia Chamber of Commerce networking event in Richmond. He’s reached out to various SMLRCC members to learn more about the products and services they offer and has met with key suppliers and vendors who support the Chamber’s operations. “I’m a firm believer in two-way communication,” Finley said. “My door at the chamber is always open.” In the last few months, Finley’s focus was to assess the chamber’s staffing needs as there’s been a couple of key positions that have turned over in the last year. In the next 90 days, Finley said he will meet with neighboring chambers of commerce in Bedford, Roanoke, Danville and Martinsville to collaborate on opportunities. An early goal, he said, is to fully launch the chamber’s re-branded nationwide marketing campaign. “As for my other responsibilities, I really am in listen mode, so I’m really trying to assess and learn more about all things Smith Mountain Lake,” Finley said. “I have been gone for four years, so it’s now time to get a better understanding of some of the challenges as well as opportunities that the chamber could help advocate for. That really is going to be a key focus for me.” In January, the SMLRCC board of directors will meet for a half-day planning session “to really put into motion what the chamber will look like in the next five years,” Finley said. This five-year strategic plan will look at the chamber’s tourism and marketing efforts, membership opportunities and upcoming legislative issues, such as a possible passenger rail stop in Bedford. Finley said his prior experience will serve him well in his new position. For 12 years he directed marketing programs with The Willard Companies, and from 2011 to 2013, he served on the SMLRCC board of directors. Finley most recently worked as the communications manager for an international defense and aerospace company, BAE Systems. In that role, he handled internal and external communications and community relations. During his time as executive director, Finley led the 2019 Smith Mountain Lake Fall Chili and Craft Festival, which he said “was a huge success.” As far as new events that the Chamber may offer in the future, Finley said he would like to explore the possibility of a restaurant week and a lake-wide event that would be centered around the Christmas holiday. “As far as amenities at the lake, from dining to retail businesses, there’s so much for everyone,” Finley said. “My goal is to grow our market from a

seasonal destination to year-round. We truly do have so much to offer all four seasons, and I will take the lead in sharing that narrative.” Finley is engaged to Laura Robinson, a Smith Mountain Lake native. The couple has plans to get married in August 2020. Finley also has a

School superintendent says goodbye He still has a year and a half to go By PETER MASON

D

oug Schuch will be leaving as the Bedford County School Superintendent, but he still has a year and a half left to go. He announced that he would be resigning when his contract expires June 30, 2021. He said that his reason for announcing it early is because he wanted the board to have plenty of time to find a replacement. “I will remain committed to leading this school division until my final day on the job,” Schuch said. “I also will pledge my personal support for doing as much or as little as the board may request in facilitating the transition of leadership.” Schuch also stated that serving Bedford’s learners, their families and the community has been an honor and a blessing for him. He didn’t give a clear reason as to why he’s choosing to resign, but said he’s unsure what will come next for him. He’s served as the superintendent in Bedford County since 2009. “I’ve walked this journey simultaneously

as both superintendent and as the father of two recent Bedford County graduates,” Schuch said. “Both of them received an amazing education from some of the best teachers and support staff that anyone could imagine.” During Schuch’s time as superintendent, he has served with 19 different school board members. “I don’t just want to thank them for their support for me as superintendent,” Schuch said. “I also want to thank them for our collective work in being future focused for the benefit of our learners. Additionally I want to recognize the tireless efforts of our Bedford County teachers, support staff and administrators for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the young learners of Bedford County.” According to Bedford County Public Schools, Schuch’s 25 years in public education have included teaching and administrative assignments in Fairfax County and Stafford County. He has also served in the

United States Navy and is a veteran of Operation Desert Storm. Schuch said that his resignation will be considered a retirement because of his years of service. He doesn’t plan on actually retiring, however, and hopes to have the opportunity to continue serving learners after he leaves Bedford. “The collaborative culture that we’ve embraced as a leadership team is truly remarkable,” Schuch said. “I hope that the spirit of teamwork will continue to benefit our young learners and our community in the years ahead. In spite of all that we’ve accomplished together, I know that time is approaching for me to step aside and pass the leadership role to the next superintendent. I’m confident that he or she will be fully dedicated to empowering our learners for future success and will continue pushing the boundaries of traditional education practices in response to our rapidly changing world.”

By SHERESE GORE

italize Church is again doing church a little bit different. Having moved out of the Westlake Cinema, the church held a grand opening within its new location at 145 Builders Pride Drive in Hardy. Vitalize moved into the new facility late last year. “It’s just a day to invite everybody to come and join us,” said Pastor Tony Gray. With the use of flashing lights and a live band, worship at Vitalize Church is lively and upbeat with about 120 people in attendance each Sunday. At Vitalize Church, “we preach and teach directly from the Bible,” Gray said. “Part of what we’ve done as a church is to try to connect with multiple generations of people who have given up church,” he said. “Many have been hurt by church, frustrated by church. We’ve been able to connect with them and reconnect with God.” Vitalize held its first church service on Easter Sunday 2012. At that time, members met in a post office; that facility is now used by a Mexican restaurant. After considering several new locations, the church moved to the Westlake Cinema about a year later. Gray said there were benefits to having worship service in the movie theater: the location was affordable for the young church, and the space had good acoustics. However, there were some limitations. Vitalize only had use of the space on Sunday mornings, which prompted logistical concerns. Setting up the theater for church service and taking things down was labor-intensive, he said, and the theater also couldn’t be used for services such as weddings and funerals. The new location is ideal for several reasons. The present site offers more space and will allow Vitalize to continue growing as a church. It is also available for church use “24/7,” he said. “We can use it whenever we need to,” Gray added. In addition, the new space has allowed the church to consolidate its sanctuary and church offices under a single roof. Prior to the move, services were held in the Westlake Cinema while the church office was located in a shopping center across Booker T. Washington Highway. “We’ve moved everything into one building,” Gray said. Vitalize Church has services at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. each Sunday. The church also has small groups that meet in homes throughout the week. In the beginning of December, Vitalize hosted a “mobile nativity” at the tree-lighting ceremony at Westlake Towne Center, during which church members impersonating Mary, Joseph and the shepherds were present. Scheduled just before Christmas was the church’s annual live Nativity in the field outside of Sunken City Brewing Company.

The event draws a crowd of approximately 2,0002,500 people each year. It was the 17th annual festival, held Nov. 2 at Bridgewater Plaza this year. The competitive chili cook-off is the center of the action at the festival with teams going all-out with themes, decorations and costumes. The contest involved 20 teams whose chili were blind tasted by a member panel on the stage at Mango’s Bar & Grill. Team “Out of Balance,” of SunTrust Bank, was the winner of the festival. The “Virginians for Trump” organization claimed second place in the festival, and team “Sweet Whili” won third. Finley said winners were based on taste, consistency, aroma, color and bite. The Showmanship and People’s Choice awards went to Lake Haven Trailer Park. Representatives had a fiesta-themed pink booth and wore matching T-shirts. In addition to chili tasting, during the festival, people who attended were able to take a walk on the decks of Bridgewater Plaza, listen to live music, shop and check out the wares of a variety of craft vendors. “The lake is certainly our number one amenity,” Finley said. “Having the opportunity to hold this event right here on the front and center of the lake and give people an opportunity to

Timothy Bratton HIS and wife, Veronica, understand the difficulty family members deal with when their loved one is in denial about their hearing loss. he Bible says “He that hath EAR, let them HEAR.” Timothy Bratton, H.I.S has been helping that come to fruition for people for over twenty years. Now, he and his wife Veronica are looking forward to their third year in Lynchburg as the new owners of the Soundz Lynchburg location. Tim and Veronica are committed to continuing the mission of helping people hear and understand their loved ones with the best technology, for the best price, and with the best service.

Tim knows first hand the importance of your loved ones hearing and understanding you. His own mother and sister each have profound hearing loss. He spent several years with his mother smiling and pretending she heard and understood the family. This is one of the reasons he chose hearing as a profession, he wanted to help his family. Tim treats all of his patients as he would want his mother treated. Our best advertisement has been our happy patients.

After having been a Liberty University student in the late 70’s it has been a profound experience for Tim to be back in Lynchburg and seeing Jerry’s vision being fulfilled. Tim recalls the days of singing “I want that mountain” and now he gets to see the Rise of LU Athletics to FBS status. Most importantly, Tim and Veronica give all the glory for Soundz’s success to Jesus. When you do business HIS way you are doing it the right way.

Veterans honored By SHERESE GORE

J

Sherese Gore/Lake Life

SFC Debra Weir speaks about her service in the U.S. Army during a Veterans Day Ceremony in Rocky Mount.

oining the U.S. Army is among the best decisions Debra Weir said she has ever made. Veterans and community members gathered for the annual Veterans Day celebration at the Franklin County Veterans’ Memorial Park in Rocky Mount. Larry Moore, of American Legion Post 111, and James Jordan, a Vietnam War veteran and member of Halesford United Methodist Church, introduced Weir and the program’s other guest speaker, Jimmie Hancock. A presentation of colors was conducted by the Franklin County High School Junior ROTC. “If you look around, you’ll see some of America’s finest,” Moore said. “... When the country called, they stood up and said ‘yes’ for God and country.” Speaking to the veterans in the crowd, Weir said she was honored to follow in the footsteps of those who served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. Weir completed two overseas tours, including Operation Iraqi Freedom. According to Weir, military personnel are challenged to go the extra mile, depend on others as part of a team, and “never take for granted what we have here in America.” Weir thanked her husband and two sons for their support and for “keeping the home fires burning.” “I hope that God, the ultimate Commander-in-Chief, will say ‘well done, good and faithful servant’ when I hang up my boots forever,” Weir said.

Lake Life 2020 |

Hancock said he arrived in Vietnam as a 19-year-old “not understanding why or what to expect.” He was drafted into the Army in 1966 and completed basic training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In the field, teamwork existed between companies and friendships developed among soldiers, he said. “After awhile you start to befriend these guys and you get to know that they are just like you are, 18- and 19-year-olds who had some things in common,” Hancock said. “You find out these guys were just like me, they played sports, but yet we were there to serve.” At times, he said, a person he’d met would no longer be present. When inquiring about their whereabouts, “the saddest thing that they would say (was) ‘they didn’t make it,’” he said. “And so it got to a point, for me, that you didn’t ask that question because you did not want to be disappoint-

ed at somebody saying ‘they didn’t make it.’” After a period of rest-and-relaxation leave in Japan, Hancock was sent back to the field. That night, “all hell broke out,” Hancock said, in what would be the start of the Tet Offensive. The enemy broke through the perimeter and into Hancock’s camp. Having to put his friends into body bags the next morning, “is something I will never forget,” Hancock said. “I would not want anybody to go through that.” “Needless to say, I was one of the blessed,” he said. Earlier in his remarks, Moore noted that less than one percent of the U.S. population has ever served in the military. “If you don’t remember anything else today, please remember that soldiers do not start wars, they merely stand up, answer the call, don the uniform and fight and win our nation’s wars that politicians start,” Moore said.

Sgt. Jimmie Hancock provides remarks about his time in the Vietnam War.

The Stables brings a touch of the West to Westlake

By SHERESE GORE

he Stable at the Virginian aims to bring a touch of the West to Westlake at Smith Mountain Lake. Located at 9945 Brooks Mill Road, The Stable is a barn-like structure that is among the area’s newest upscale event and wedding venues. “We just love people to come together, to have fun and enjoy themselves,” said Jackie Baker, who owns The Stable at the Virginian with her fiancé Dr. Mike Boyd. Baker is a certified event and wedding planner from The Bridal Society, one of the largest wedding planner organizations in the world. She has taken design courses as well, making The Stable a “one-stop shop” for such activities. Events at The Stable are not restricted to human guests. Horses may take part in wedding ceremonies, and true to its name, there are five horse stalls located inside the building that are authentic and made to code. The stalls also can be opened for additional gathering space for events or for rent by vendors. The main attraction is spacious event hall, which is ideal for dining. Large crystal chandeliers suspended from the 40-foot ceiling light the interior of the event hall, and western-themed decor rounds out the space. On the second floor, The Stable offers a bridal suite with a private bathroom, large mirror, and dressing area. It is decorated with candles, crystal chandeliers, and a French love seat. On the opposite end of the building is the “gentleman’s quarter.” It also features a bathroom and seating but shows off masculine western décor and an audio system. There’s also a gathering room for the families of the bride and groom, the Western Saloon, and a prep kitchen. An outdoor patio offers seating for 25, and overall, the Sherese Gore/Lake Life

building can accommodate 150 guests. One could say that the custom-built, 9,000 square foot western stable could take your breath away. The Stable is a culmination of Baker and Boyd’s love of the American West, western movies and country music. Boyd is a physician practicing in Martinsville, and Baker is a former nurse who also worked in marketing and sales in the medical field. According to Baker, Boyd is a John Wayne fan, and the couple strongly adheres to the concept of “cowboy ethics,” a compilation of values that include honesty, hard work and personal character. Cowboy ethics was evident in places such as the Dakotas and Wyoming, Baker said. “You saw that everywhere,” she added. “Hard-working people, you could take their word, they were honest, and so we really appreciated that, and we wanted to bring something like that back here.” Baker said that the “community is important.” Aside from Courtesy photo

the chandeliers, which were the product of a family-owned business in North Carolina, interior and exterior work on The Stable was performed by local contractors and laborers. The Stable is located on more than 40 acres of rolling fields and oaks and maple trees. It is the first phase of The Virginian project, and future phases will involve efforts that include the construction of an outdoor destination named The Pavilion as well as seasonal events to include a pumpkin patch, corn maze and tractor pulls. The Stable’s pricing is comparable to other upscale venues, Baker said. The Stable has partnered with Spring Hill Marriott in Roanoke for wedding packages and the preferred caterer is Center Stage Catering in Rocky Mount. The Stable is currently accepting wedding reservations. Maciel used the movie Wreck-It Ralph as the inspiration for her candy station, building a replica of the King Candy Castle on the grounds of the future home of the church on Timberwood Drive in Moneta. The family friendly event also had a pig roast, bluegrass music, petting zoo, obstacle course, car, bike and truck show and a live auction.

he public was encouraged the Saturday after Thanksgiving to visit businesses at Smith Mountain Lake to find gifts and enjoy the service that the local busibusi ness owners have to offer. It was part of Small Business Saturday, an international event that began after Thanksgiving in 2010 and was recognized locally by the Smith Mountain Lake ReRe gional Chamber of Commerce, along with numerous other business communities. “The campaign is all about promoting people as they start their holiday shopshop ping to shop local and try not to go to the big stores and the mall,” Chamber Office Administrator Laura Healy said. “We want try to promote the community to stay local and shop in their small local businesses.” The chamber helps promote Small Business Saturday every year using social me-

dia. In addition, American Express, which created the event, sends the chamber promotional items that retail businesses can use to decorate their business for the day. “I think it’s pretty successful,” Healy said. “I think it helps get the word out for small businesses around the lake. As long as they have their specials and special sales going on for Black Friday on that Saturday, I think it’s helped them out a great deal. A lot of the businesses pick up the items that they need from us, we have them here in the business center, and they decorate, take pictures and post on social media what they’ve done with the items that they’ve picked up.” Some of the businesses that participated included Gifts Ahoy, the Cottage Gate, Bridgewater Marina, Comfort and Joy, the Southern Goat Boutique, the Red Rock Store and a lot more local retail businesses in the area. Many of the businesses had special sales during the day, and the chamber encouraged them to promote those specials with social media. “It’s important for us here at the lake because it’s a more quite time around the lake and we don’t have that many visitors and tourists here at this time of year as opposed to the summer,” Healy said. “It’s important for the community to support our small businesses during the more quite months. Small Business Saturday is a perfect way to do that.” According to American Express, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution in 2011 to support the day. Studies indicate that for every dollar spent at a small local business in the United States, 67 cents stays in the community, meaning that shopping local can have a major impact on the community’s economic growth. From 2010-2018, Small Business Saturday spending reached a reported estimate of $103,000,000 since the day it began, according to American Express. The event also began in 2013 in the United Kingdom after it’s success over the first several years in the United States.

Read to Me Day enriches children O

By PETER MASON

n one day every year, Appalachian Power employees go out to hundreds of elementary schools across West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee. Line mechanics, meter readers, customer call center representatives, power plant workers and engineers all take a children’s book to read to students at the elementary schools. For this year’s annual “Read to Me” Day, more than 300 employees read to more than 20,000 students at about 420 schools and left the book with the school as a donation to the school library.

Pictured is Appalachian Power Real Estate employee Lisa Hammock with a class from Glade Hill Elementary School on “Read to Me” Day.

“We all take the same book, and we ask the schools if they’d like for us to come for every elementary school,” Appalachian Power Real Estate employee Lisa Hammock said. “A lot of times, the book is selected based on the author or illustrator if they’re local or if it has something to do with electricity.” One of the schools that Hammock visited was Glade Hill Elementary. She said that she enjoyed visiting Glade Hill because it’s where she went to elementary school herself and her children went to school there as well. The theme for this year was “Never Give Up.” Employees read the book “The Boy Who Touched the Stars” by José Hernández in honor of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. The autobiography describes the author’s journey as the son of migrant workers from Mexico to becoming

an astronaut on the Space Shuttle Discovery. “We’ve had great success with the schools that I go to,” Hammock said. “The kids always seem to love it, and they’ve been very kind and respectful. The teachers have been great to allow us to come in. Sometimes the schools don’t have the opportunity because they just can’t fit it into their schedule, but most schools participate.” Appalachian Power said that the science behind good reading skills is clear. Research shows that when children become good readers by third grade, they are more likely to perform well in other subjects and graduate high school. It is the key building block to developing skills that lead to college and career success. “I think now more than ever, it’s important for students to see the connection between learning and leading, and leading roles in our com-

munity,” Glade Hill Elementary School Principal Kim Poindexter said. “It’s important to give back to the community, learn in the community and work and lead in the community. I think it’s a great partnership when we can work together to impact children’s lives.” Appalachian Power started participating in Read to Me Day in 2001 and estimates that it has read to more than 275,000 students and donated about 6,500 books since it began. “We support education in many ways and at all levels, from Pre-K to higher education,” Appalachian Power president and a volunteer reader Chris Beam said. “Read to Me Day is special. It’s a boots-on-the-ground way we can show every school we serve that we value education and support what they do. Even more important, it’s a way to show children that reading is important.”

Dudley secretary celebrates 50-year career By SHERESE GORE

A

fter 50 years of service as Dudley Elementary School’s secretary, Kathy Meador said she has no plans to retire. She began her career in 1970 as an 18-year-old recent graduate of Franklin County High School. Things were a bit demanding that first year. “The secretary in elementary schools, we are the attendance clerk, we are the bookkeeper, we are the person responsible for payroll,” Meador said. “And so it’s trying to grasp all that in a short amount of time.” “The first year was very challenging,” Meador said. “I told myself, I’ll work through this year, and I’m never working again.” But she came back, and 50 years later, one of her favorite aspects of the job is that “every day is different.” Meador’s duties include issuing bus passes and car ride notes, running the attendance, checking emails and talking to parents. At this time, Meador and Dudley Elementary School Principal Dana Kelley are working on developing the school’s 2020 budget. Kelley is Meador’s ninth principal, “and I can say I’ve truly been blessed,” Meador said. “Every single person I’ve worked for, worked with, trained, have been fantastic; I mean really, really good. That’s been a blessing.” Standout memories are numerous.

Kathy Meador has served as the secretary of Dudley Elementary School for 50 years.

At the beginning of Meador’s career, Dudley was located in the building that now houses the Napoli Cowboy restaurant. The school was attended by about 90 students in the first through seventh grades. That first year, the principal approached her and told her there would be a fire drill. Meador was handed a cowbell and was told to yell the word “fire.” Presented with the same duty today, Meador said she would laugh and perform the task, but as a young woman, Meador said she was mortified. “Here I am, 18 years old, ringing that darn old bell, yelling, ‘fire, fire!’” she said. The school moved to its present facility a couple of years later. Meador recalled that the new building had no running water during the first few days, and students and employees were forced to use portable toilets during that time. “Can you imagine that today? No!,” she said. There have been changes through the years, including technological advances and what Meador described as pressure placed on teachers to teach to the Standards of Learning. But what’s kept her coming back to Dudley is the support from the school community and beyond.

“It’s like my second family,” Meador said. “We have been through a lot together.” Meador is a breast cancer survivor, “and they absolutely just supported me through my whole ordeal,” she said. “And it’s just like a family. Everybody here gets along, and we take care of each other.” “She’s all of our moms,” said teacher Jordan Liga. That sentiment was shared by Dudley’s head custodian Shelby Simmons, who attended the school when Meador served as secretary. “Kathy was a lifesaver,” Simmons recalled. “All us kids did not mind going to her.” Nowadays, “I can have a problem, and Kathy can talk me through it, and I’ll feel a whole lot better,” Simmons said. “She always has a saying: ‘You can do it.’ I lean on Kathy a lot.” According to Kelley, Meador is a pillar of the community. “She has been here for 50 years and all of the community loves her, from the students to their parents to their grandparents. She has been pivotal in keeping Dudley Elementary School grounded.” “I know that Dudley is just blessed to have Miss Kathy,” Kelley added.
