Disc Golf Comes To Alvin

Lighted disc golf course opens in Alvin Story by Joshua Truksa City and county officials joined dozens of disc golf enthusiasts from across the Houston area Jan. 8 to celebrate the opening of the much anticipated first fully lighted disc golf course in the entire country at Briscoe Park. “It’s the only course in the country designed with lights and we’re really, really excited to have that as an amenity,” Alvin Parks & Recreation Director Dan Kelinske said. Kelinske revealed at the opening ceremony that the course will receive a recognition award from the Houston-Galveston Area Council (HGAC) Parks and Natural Areas Committee. “We started this, believe it or not, about three years ago,” Councilman Gabe Adame said, before thanking his fellow councilmen and particularly City Manager Junru Roland. “It was his idea and he was really helping them champion the funding of this project through the use of our HOT tax money,” Adame said, referring to the hotel occupancy tax (HOT) revenue that was used to fund the project. By law, HOT revenue can only be used for furthering recreation and attractions. “I got to really tip my hat to the parks board for their vision Anthony Perkins takes a shot at the first tournament at Alvin’s for this over here at Briscoe Park,” Adame said, referring to new disc golf course Jan. 11. the abandonment of the original idea to develop the course at National Oak Park, to which Adame admitted to disappointment before professional disc golfer and course designer Chris Vandergriff recognized the much higher potential of the Briscoe Park property. “This has been a great event. We’re looking at lots of tournaments coming in, lots of folks staying in hotels, coming in, spending money in our community, so there’s a big tourism aspect that comes along with this,” Adame said. After a ribbon cutting ceremony joined by television reporter Pooja Lodhia as part of ABC13’s weeklong ABC13+ series about Alvin that coincided with the opening, it was time to hit the links- chain links, that is, as disc golf baskets are designed with chains to catch the disc. “This project was a long time coming and we’re very happy to see it here,” Alvin-Manvel Chamber of Commerce ambassador Lindsey Vaughan said. Bobby Rabalais drove all the way from Cypress on Wednesday to attend the opening ceremonies and play a round on the new course. Rabalais has played disc golf for 20 years and said he has never played on a course with dedicated lights, making Alvin’s course “extremely special.” Alvin native Richard Summers drove from his home of San Antonio for the opening of the course. Summers has played disc golf for over 40 years and is one of the oldest professional disc golfers in Texas. He recalled the first disc golf course ever in Alvin at Alvin High School in the 1970s. “We painted stripes on trees and poles and we’d have to hit between them. It’s called an objective course. AHS Gymnastics

Grit . . . Strength . . . Resolve Story and Photos by Prentice C. James

AHS gymnastics coach Fawn Mills, left, directs practice in the early morning hours at the Santa Fe Sports complex. Grit, strength, and resolve are core character traits of every gymnast on the Alvin High School gymnastics team. The level of dedication demonstrated by these athletes is unparalleled. Unlike most athletes who have access to training facilities on campus, the gymnasts at Alvin High School utilize a practice facility in a neighboring town. This requires them to arrive at their home campus before 5:00 a.m. on practice days to travel to Santa Fe, where they practice for up to two hours. Nonpractice days are reserved for early

morning treatment or strength and conditioning training. Traveling is not restricted to just practice days as these student athletes also trek long distances to compete. The average meet is over 160 miles one-way, with a particular competition being more than 600 miles roundtrip. Juggling an already taxing sport with extreme travel is difficult, but the gymnasts balance these rigors and their academics with the same grace and tenacity they exhibit during competition. Despite the early morning practices and

competition travel, the Alvin High School gymnastics team recently captured an impressive 3rd place win at the Dragon Invitational Compulsory Meet in Round Rock, Texas. The seeds of hard work, dedication, and discipline sowed by the gymnastics team have yielded a bountiful harvest of success. The accomplishments experienced both on and off the mat will keep these Lady Jackets soaring to greater heights. More photos on page 12 FEBRUARY 2020 . . .

14 . . . FEBRUARY 2020

January is the time to commit to New Year’s resolutions and one of the most common ones is a plan to exercise more, lose weight and become more active. With this in mind, more than a dozen people attended Hydra Health Fitness’ first group fitness class of 2020 on Saturday. Hydra Health Fitness is the fitness arm of the new Oils ‘r’ Us business that first opened in October. Alvinite owner Keith Shotwell’s daughter, Breigh Rodriguez, is a certified Zumba and step fitness instructor who brought fellow fitness instructor Jessica Macias on board to the new program at Hydra Health Fitness. Both previously taught classes at Alvin’s Thelma Ley Anderson YMCA. Rodriguez’ mother, Van Shotwell, is also an instructor. Rodriquez said incorporating fitness was part of the plan for Oils ‘r’ Us in its goal to make people Continued on page 16

healthier. “We had the space back here and really wanted to utilize it and kind of bring it all together,” Rodriguez said. In their first class of 2020, Rodriguez and Macias guided the group through several rounds of Zumba and Extreme Hip Hop before introducing Pomercise - an exercise regimen using weighted pom-poms developed by Van that sets Hydra Health Fitness apart from the rest. Van is a former professional cheerleader for the Houston Gamblers and Houston Oilers and developed Pomercise in 2014 when she remembered that her days as a cheerleader were her fittest. “You had to carry those poms and change with the poms so I was, like, just cut everywhere,” Van said. Van said after having her four children she decided to get back in shape the best way she knew how - with pom-poms. “After four kids, I’m like, well I need to get back into shape, so let me go back to what I know, which is dancing and pom - poms,” Van said.

DISC GOLF . . . Continued from page 9 baskets were invented and we’d just mark the course and we’d play there,” Summers said. Summers said the sport of disc golf fits Alvin perfectly. “It’s going to be great. I started an Ultimate Frisbee team in this town back in the 80s and in ’93 we finished third in the world- our team from Alvin, the Maui Hounds. So, we’ve been around. The Frisbee community knows Alvin,” Summers said. The lights came on at the new course for the first time at dusk Jan. 8. Many said a lighted course is especially beneficial during the wintertime when night falls shortly after work hours. Benjamin Allen Lee, who helped Vandergriff and Cory Cardenas design the course, didn’t get a chance to play the course just after the opening because he was at work, but that’s what lights are for. “The lights were a very nice touch. I think the city of Alvin is incredibly generous,” Lee said. The lights also freed fellow disc golfer Tommy Myers of Rosenberg from having to schedule his round of disc golf during the nearly non-existent period of January daylight between work and nightfall. “I drive all over Greater Houston to play disc golf. This with lights, during the wintertime being able to play a round, you know, during the week after work, is unique. It’s the only place you can do it, so I’m excited. I’ll probably play once a week,” Myers said.

orey’s Kitchen has become a familiar name, and taste, on the lips of many in the Alvin/Manvel and surrounding communities. Corey Scopel grew up in Manvel and his culinary skills have only sharpened as he has paired traditional food favorites with unique flavors and combinations. Corey first began serving food out of his iconic yellow food truck that can usually be found at Scopel Square at 319 W. Willis in Alvin. Well, good news travels fast and so has word of the good flavors rising up from Corey’s Kitchen, which has given opportunity to open a restaurant location at 20709 Morris Ave. (Hwy. 6) in Manvel. A rebel in the kitchen, Corey is cooking up juicy chicken breast topped with Dijon infused brown sauce or maybe you’re more in the mood for a four-cheese artichoke stuffed chicken breast served with loaded mashed potatoes and green beans. Corey’s Kitchen can flip out burgers like you’ve never seen, starting with handmade certified Angus beef patties served with onion rings or crisped to perfection crinkly cut fries. Appetizers like Chicken wings, homemade pizza bites and Italian Queso fries are a must with many more entrees and wraps to try.
