from Caravanserai to Co-living in Shannghai Type: Individual Work Location: Shanghai, China Duration: 2020/7-2020/9 Supervisor: Teo.nacher@xjtlu.edu.cn
The caravanserai, a building with the enclosed court, is usually located along the ancient time trade roads. It is one of the most significant architecture types as it provides both rest and trading space for travellers and pilgrims. Nowadays, only a few famous caravanserais area reserved and renovatedmost of were deserted. Lacking the ability to respond to the changing users and demanding makes it uncompetitive at present. This project will analyse how caravanserai acts as an agent in that period and how its spatial layout and design methodology was influenced by its users' social backgrounds from an Interdisciplinary Perspective (Architectural anthropology). The designer will then give a new methodology to respond to the current circumstance (from ancient time to the 21st century and from trading roads to big cities' traffic arteries).

Problems in Dupont Circle & Potential Reason
In the early 1990s, the district was known as the nation's "murder capital". Dupont Circle, which is located in the north-west of the White House, is still suffering the crisis of violence and robbery nowadays — although the street lit like a crime scene at night. The outdated infrastructure and bleak street corner is becoming the haunt of criminals. It's well past time to rethink Dupont Circle as a social, human-centred, public space.
In the early 1990s, Washington, D.C., was known as the nation's "murder capital, experiencing 482 homicides in 1991. After the 1991 peak there was a downward trend and In 2012, Washington, D.C. had only several homicides, the lowest annual tally since 1963. However, Dupont Circle, which is located in the north-west of The White House is still suffering this crisis --although the street lit like a crime scene at night.
The inherent class contradictions cannot disengage from crime. Thus, specific social background (racial difference, religious conflicts etc.) in DC will be analysed first. This project is trying to give a possibility to the majority to experience what the minority suffers. The journey of reverse roles will help all of them eliminate the prejudice. Crime Rate

Apart from the profit of wine production, wine is of great importance on the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Here, members of the church celebrate the Lord’s Supper, replicating the exchange of wine to symbolize Jesus’ sacrifice for the redemption of sins. Franziskanerinnenkloster Reute, one of the famous convent, is located in a small town in the south of Germany. However, it suffered several disasters from it been built, including fire, abolishment and rebuilt. Nowadays, this historical building and its neighbours seem a lack of vitality, and solutions are needed to boost energy and economy. This project will build a frame of production system, which includes the organic farm, factory and museum, in this area to re-activate the local economy and vitality.

A place more than just books A library more than just readers
Research About People’s Attitude to Local Libraries in Suzhou and the Reason: Nowadays, the replacements of the paper books become more acceptable and accessible to the users. This brand new products significantly impact the status of paper books and physical libraries. Data shows there is a decreasing proportion of people who willing reading books in the library in some place. This project aims to make the contemporary physical library Re-competitive in terms of pluralistic users and functions. Analysing the composition of residents and their demanding & opinions to the local library, the designer proposes a multi-functional space which is seeking a balance between the architect's idea and user's views.

SWOT Analysis Strengh: 1. Transportation system is working well and the connection between old town and new one is well designed. 2. The site is near the moat and green belt of the old town. There is a rich landscape interms of nature and culture.
Weakness: 1. Some infrastructures like dumpsters, signpost and lighting system in the old town should be upgraded. 2. There are too many individual retail shops, which is in poor condition and has low efficiency, sitting on the both side of the road.
Opportunity: 1. There are many residential area, schools and tourist attractions near by, which means the target user here is diversform. 2. The surrounding building is low and the library has the chance to become a landmark in old town.
Threaten: 1. Existing buildings near the site is traditional housing and has some cultural value. The library should not do harm to these old buildings. 2. The site is directly facing the main road. The problem like noise and exhaust gas emission should be considered.
Design Process Case Study The ca s e s t udi e s ai m t o anal ys i s how t he de s i gne r s deal with different functions to make the space and circulation logical. The spacial relationship is summarized and divided into three parts: Loop (same hierarchy), Linear (horizontal relation) and Terrace (vertical relation). Helsinki Central Library

Kinetic Facade Design Type: Group Work Contribution: Research& Design Location: Stuttgart, Germany Duration: 2020/11 Supervisor:Zayad.Motlib@xjtlu.edu.cn While the beads accommodated by the prism is rotating, the mirrors will form infinate reflections that can be imagined by the transformation from simple mechanism to the solution of the whole facade. By designing a single part of solid / void pattern and moving mechanism, we can constitute a whole facade unit that moves under simple logic as well as gives attractive light pattern.

Details of Ta-Sha Ta-Sha consists of three parts. Following the topdown order, they are top, body and foundation. The usual materials are metal or stone. Standing on the top, Ta-Sha is the prominent sign of the pagoda.
Scale and reference substance The comparison of people and floor height on the second floor. We can tell the height is very low, and each floor is gradually reducing bottom up.
Structure details The loading bearing member is the brick wall and brackets; simultaneously, each floor has a 45 degrees rotation to keep the load transferred in a balanced way to make the structure more stable. Podium details The twin pagoda has an octagon basement, however, the interior layout following the original pattern; which is square shape inwall. The basement of these pagodas is very close, no more than 20 meters. It’s a rare phenomenon compare with other twin pagodas. In terms of the structure, it requires extremely high requirement of the basement and land. That’s why the Twin Pagoda has a dominant status among Buddhist architecture.
