he Mashantucket Pequots are a Native Algonquin people who have endured centuries of conflict and survival on and around North America’s oldest Indian reservation (est. 1666), located in southeastern Connecticut. In 1637, the Pequots survived the first genocidal massacre attempt against an Indian Tribe by Europeans on what would become continental United States soil. Pequot history is an unprecedented story of redemption and restoration, which is featured at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center. Today, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation owns and operates one of the largest and most successful gaming resorts in North America—Foxwoods® Resort Casino—along with a variety of other enterprises, including the Lake of Isles Golf Course, Pequot Pharmaceutical Network, and The Spa at Norwich Inn. Altogether, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation remains one of the state of Connecticut’s highest taxpayers and largest employers. In 2017, the Tribe reaches its $4 billion milestone for gaming revenue paid to the state of Connecticut through the Mashantucket Pequot Fund—a first-of-its-kind revenue-sharing agreement between a tribe and state (est. 1993). "...customer service is still what sets Foxwoods apart."
oxwoods team member Jim Bordeleau asserts that a casino is a casino, but knowing how to treat customers right can set it apart. After 25+ years at Foxwoods, mostly as an Executive Host, Jim knows a thing or two about customer service. “You can teach people how to use the computer and different programs, but with customer service skills, you either have them or you don’t,” explains Jim. A big part of Jim’s job in customer service is building relationships, he says. He has met a lot of really nice people over the years, and once in a while one becomes a friend.“Every once in a while you just hit it off and you have a relationship that lasts for years. I’ve had several. It’s nice.” Some of these friendships were made outside of work. Jim fondly recalls a time when he got the chance to go with a handful of players and an executive from Player Development to Saskatchewan, Canada, for a week-long fishing trip. “We would have little contests to see who caught the biggest fish, and most of the time it was me!” laughs Jim. “The camaraderie lasted for years and was great.” During his tenure at Foxwoods, Jim has seen many changes. Today, gaming is no longer the only revenue stream. People come for a show, the restaurants and shopping at Tanger Outlets. But customer service is still what sets Foxwoods apart, he asserts.“It’s that personal touch a lot of people look for. Guests like it when someone recognizes their face and asks about their kids.” Jim is an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman. He also enjoys gardening and canning with his wife, Linda. They’ve been married for 35 years and have a son.

R AINMAKER STATUE Kneeling high above Rainmaker Square at Foxwoods is a larger-thanlife translucent warrior, his bow drawn upward, and his countenance strained as if determined to pierce the heavens – The Rainmaker. This long-celebrated attraction sits at the heart of Foxwoods’ bustling mega complex, and has captivated audiences for 25 years with lasers, lights, sounds, music, steam, and yes…rain. Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Elder John Holder narrated the Rainmaker story – one warrior’s determination to seek the Great Spirit's path of destiny – a story that reflects the heart of the Pequot people. Today, Holder leads the effort to restore Rainmaker to its full and former glory, as one of the most treasured and photographed wonders of Foxwoods.
NO ORDINARY FLOWER Beneath the shadow of Foxwoods is the vast Cedar Swamp, affectionately known by Pequots as both Chomowauke, meaning “Owls Nest,” and Cuppacommock, meaning “Hiding Place” – a place of refuge and safety. Each May, the Cedar Swamp springs to life with vivid rhododendrons – scraggly twisted shrubs laden with hearty white, pink and purple blooms, scattering color throughout the dense forest. But this is no ordinary flower – its centers are stained crimson red, representing the blood of Pequots that fled the Pequot Massacre at Mystic Fort in early June, 1637. Led by a warrior named Puttaquapouck, surviving Pequots took refuge in their beloved swamp until they were discovered and surrounded by 120 Massachusetts colony soldiers. Ultimately, these Pequots were either sold into slavery or killed. Puttaquapouck was captured, bound, and forced to lie on his back to meet his demise amid the lush rhododendron blooms. Before he was killed, Puttaquapouck uttered a curse. He declared that the golden hearts of the Cuppacommock rhododendrons would turn to blood from that time forward, representing a perpetual reproach against the invading English and their merciless slaughter.

Aware of the overwhelming evidence of the benefits of card games, The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and Foxwoods Resort Casino have donated over 200,000 decks of cards in the past five years to a variety of groups including Community Centers, Military Members serving overseas, Senior Citizens, Nursing Homes, and Schools. We promote the responsible and beneficial use of playing cards for family fun, and to derive the benefits that card games are known to have on cognition. The donation of free playing cards is part of The Giving Campaign—a charitable effort of The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation that actively nurtures a culture of volunteerism and involvement, widening a circle of hope and engagement that thrives within the MPTN itself. Learning how to play cards makes you better at math; it helps you think faster; it’s valuable in learn to navigate human behavior, in making decisions and more. In much the same way that playing a musical instrument stimulates your brain, learning the rules of card games (even simple ones like Go Fish) have a positive impact on your brain power—even for children. The Giving Campaign includes a comprehensive array of contributions, including direct financial support, and “in kind” donations that enhance the fundraising and programming opportunities within our region. 6
