WUYEEPUYÔQ —WELCOME! ABOUT THE MASHANTUCKET (WESTERN) PEQUOT TRIBAL NATION

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation is a federally recognized Native American Indian tribe located at one of America’s oldest reservations, Mashantucket, in Southeastern Connecticut. As pioneers of the Indian casino gaming industry, the

Mashantucket Pequots’ history reveals one of America’s greatest come-back stories, featured at the Tribe’s world renowned Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center. Today, the Tribe owns and operates one of the largest and most

celebrated gaming resort destinations in North America, Foxwoods Resort Casino, along with a variety of complementary businesses including a world-class golf course, a luxury spa and Pequot Health Care (PHC). As one of the State’s highest

revenue contributors and largest employers, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation has provided more than $4 billion to Connecticut in slot revenue payments through a first-of-its-kind agreement, established in 1993. Likewise, the Tribe has

contributed hundreds of millions in donations and sponsorships to benefit worthy charities, families, communities and tribes in need, locally and throughout the U.S.

The tribal seal is a reflection of the Mashantucket Pequot past and a symbol of hope for the future. Framed against the sky, the lone tree on a knoll represents Mashantucket, the “much wooded land” where the Pequots hunted and kept alive their identity as an independent people. Displayed on the knoll is the signature of Robin Cassasinamon, the Pequots’ first leader following the 1637 massacre at Mystick Fort. The fox stands as a reminder that the Pequots are known as “The Fox People."

HONORING ELIZABETH GEORGE PLOUFFE AND MARTHA “MATT” LANGEVIN THE SISTERS WHO SAVED THE MASHANTUCKET (WESTERN) PEQUOT INDIAN RESERVATION

Last year, the Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame inducted two Mashantucket Pequot ancestors

posthumously, Elizabeth George Plouffe and Martha "Matt" Langevin—the two women were the

only residents living on the Mashantucket (Western) Pequot Indian Reservation for most of the 1960s and 1970s. During this challenging time, they helped one another survive and hold onto the beloved

ancestral land until former Chairman Richard "Skip" Hayward, a grandson of Elizabeth George Plouffe,

began to lead the Tribe with a vision to achieve state and federal recognition, develop a viable economy, preserve our ancestral lands and bring Pequots home to Mashantucket.

poisonous copperhead in 1909. Matt never liked snakes and was known to always carry a shotgun with her, blasting the

preserving the Pequot land and culture. She was also the for the sovereignty of Connecticut tribes. Occasionally,

Elizabeth appeared in the news to fight injustice or preserve Pequot land rights, like in 1968, when the police arrested her for owning unlicensed dogs. The Hartford Courant

chronicled the newsworthy case in which Elizabeth fought

and won through the Connecticut State Court, affirming her right as a Pequot resident of Mashantucket to refrain from licensing her dogs.

A devoted mother, Elizabeth had seven children and

was a beloved grandmother of 19, some of whom lived

with and learned from her for weeks or months at a time whenever their parents were away for work. As a young

adult, Elizabeth worked as a baker at the historic Wauregan Hotel in Norwich, Connecticut, and later as a domestic in

the Brown home, a wealthy local family residing in Norwich, Connecticut. Elizabeth was an expert at living off the

land at Mashantucket; gardening, cooking and preserving

foods, and locals revered her baked goods for many miles around. She learned traditional herbal practices from her

mother, Martha, cultivating a variety of indigenous plants at Mashantucket for medicinal use. Elizabeth passed on

a beloved Aunt to her siblings' children and many other when their parents went away in search of work. Matt's

daily responsibilities included root vegetable gardening, preserving food and watching over her ancestral lands.

When state and local government officials attempted to take land away from the Tribe, Martha wasn't afraid to confront

them‌ even to the point of using her trusty shotgun to scare them off.

Elizabeth and Matt helped each other survive efficiently at the Reservation, although life at Mashantucket grew

increasingly difficult for Elizabeth and Matt as they aged. The two women never gave up their passion for holding

onto their ancestral lands, and even declined an offer from ambitious state officials to give up their Mashantucket

homes in exchange for spending their remaining years in comfortable retirement facilities. Had they accepted the

proposal, the State of Connecticut would have effectively eliminated the Mashantucket Pequots for the last time.

A move that would have been detrimental to the Tribe. It

would have enabled the state to transition the Reservation into a state park.

IT IS JUST FOOD. SERVING IT UP WITH MICHAEL YAFFE, EXECUTIVE CHEF VUE 24 by Adrienne Hester

Chef Michael Yaffe’s presence is undeniable when he steps into a room, one may even mistake him for a football player. As the head chef for Foxwoods’ award-winning VUE 24, he uses his life-long passion for food and culinary

creativity to provide an elevated dining experience to guests who discover the 24th Floor restaurant.

Chef Yaffe tapped into his culinary passion at an early age. Growing up in

Brockton, Massachusetts, his father played a pivotal role in teaching him the

basics of cooking. He learned a lot about fresh seafood, a principal ingredient in French fare. He later trained in the traditional style of French cuisine.

My wife, Katie, gets asked this question a lot. People tell her she is so lucky to have a chef at home, and she will always say, "He makes a great reservation." She cooks at the house most of the time unless it is summertime, or I feel like grilling in the snow. It is a thousand times harder to cook at the house. In the restaurant I have assistance, and all the ingredients stocked.

FROM THE FOREST TO YOUR PLATE. PURE MAPLE SYRUP IS MORE THAN A HOBBY—IT'S A WAY OF LIFE.

16

THE WEEKÁPAHEEK PROJECT: SUGAR SHACK There is nothing more satisfying than a stack of golden pancakes coated with the sweet, sticky goodness of syrup. At Mashantucket, the longtime cultural practice

of syrup harvesting is more popular than ever before. Each winter, tribal members gather to clear sugar bush, tap trees, rig up sap lines, and get the sugar shack up and running in full swing—the way Pequots have produced syrup for hundreds of years. You might not know it, but you taste the sweet liquid when eating in-room dining, Veranda Café, VUE 24 Sky Brunch Sunday, Cedars Steaks & Oysters, and the Rainmaker Buffet.

Want to take a little Native history home with you? The delicious locally harvested Pequot syrup is available inside Foxwoods gift shops, The Pequot Outpost,

and the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center gift shop. You are

also helping preserve an institution passed down for generations, supporting

sustainability and improving your health because the pure natural syrup is good

for you. According to LIVESTRONGSM.COM, "It is rich in minerals such as calcium, potassium, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and iron, the USDA Natural

Resources Conservation Service reports. It also contains vitamins B2, B5, B6, niacin, biotin and folic acid, as well as trace amounts of amino acids."

"Maple sugaring is an essential part of the past at Mashantucket, a vital tradition handed down from generation to generation to maintain a connection to the

agricultural roots in a way that leverages the land and resources respectfully, for the betterment of the Tribe," says tribal citizen Jeremy Whipple, Weekápaheek project leader. "Getting involved in this annual tradition gives Pequot people a

sense of pride and confidence through a customary cultural trade anyone can learn at any age."

He is enthusiastic about maintaining this and other traditions of homesteading, as well as harvesting sustainable foods that are part of the heritage and indigenous

to Pequot people. In the last few years, Jeremy has led the renovation of the Sugar Shack facility and installed new boiler equipment. He designed the maple syrup bottle and included a glimpse of Pequot history on the back of each bottle.

Maintaining a connection with the past while planning the future is the mission

of the Weekápaheek project connecting generations of Pequots. Elders passed

down the traditions of maple sugaring, and now Jeremy and other tribal citizens volunteer to instruct Pequot children.

Preparation for maple sugaring begins in late January for harvesting in February and March.

choose to stay over are just an elevator ride away from a peaceful nap and changed to go out to by 7PM.

Because of the season, how would you design a wintertime wedding?

I would love to design an actual Christmastime wedding on our grand terrace. There is a tremendous amount of opportunity to make a creative and unique statement.

Starting with a gourmet coffee and hot chocolate bar display with marshmallows, crushed candies, chocolate shavings,

Have the chefs ever said no to a request?

Never. Our pastry chefs are award-winners who search out a good

challenge, especially extreme deserts. All they need is a picture. Our catering team is open to everything. There is so much talent in the

Foxwoods culinary department, trained in all types of cuisine. If you have a family recipe, you can bring it in, and they will not hesitate to make it for your special day.

2019 had some stellar tunes. What were the most popular wedding and first dance ballads?

The most popular first dance song was “Speechless” by Dan + Shay. “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran was the second most popular. What are the trends you see for weddings in 2020?

It is not so much a trend as an evolution. Weddings have become more of a celebration of ethnicity and culture. We had a Puerto Rican couple ask for tembleque for dessert, and an Italian couple requested a dish

besides pasta to incorporate as another way to signify heritage. Those are my favorite weddings. When couples are doing who they are and what they are, and not following anybody else. Getting to see their

authenticity because they know what they want. I believe that is the

best. Another trend is zero-waste weddings and receptions as people are looking to see how they can make their wedding greener. What tips do you have for couples?

1. If it does not feel right, you are not doing the right thing for

yourselves. It is not your mother-father-cousins-best friend’s wedding. It is yours.

2. Write down your top five wants for your wedding and then compare. Is your wish list similar?

3. B e flexible with your plans when starting your planning. Pick a month, have a general idea of day or nighttime event, and your budget BEFORE you start any shopping. It will save you a lot of stress,

potential disappointment and open you up to something wonderful you may not have even considered.

4. D on’t feel obligated to over share all your plans. Give yourself a

break from a ton of unwanted/unsolicited advice by simply saying, “We haven’t decided yet.”

5. And finally, keep your priorities straight! The bottom-line is you are

marrying the person who loves you and makes you feel like the absolute BEST version of you. In the end, THAT’S what truly matters!
