WELCOME ABOUT THE MASHANTUCKET (WESTERN) PEQUOT TRIBAL NATION

T

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council is a seven-member governing body of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, responsible for managing the Tribe’s gaming and non-gaming enterprises. Front row, left to right: Jean Swift, Treasurer; Richard E. Sebastian, Vice Chairman; Rodney Butler, Chairman; Crystal Whipple, Secretary Back row, left to right: Daniel Menihan, Roy Colebut-Ingram, Merrill M. M. Reels

he Mashantucket Pequots are a Native Algonquin people who have endured centuries of conflict and survival on and around North America's oldest Indian reservation (est. 1666), located in southeastern Connecticut. In 1637, the Pequots survived the first genocidal massacre attempt against an Indian Tribe by Europeans on what would become continental United States soil. Pequot history is an unprecedented story of redemption and restoration, which is featured at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center. Today, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation owns and operates one of the largest and most successful gaming resorts in North America – Foxwoods® Resort Casino – along with a variety of other enterprises, including the Lake of Isles Golf Course, Pequot Pharmaceutical Network, and The Spa at Norwich Inn. Altogether, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation remains one of the state of Connecticut's highest taxpayers and largest employers. In 2017, the Tribe reaches its $4 billion milestone for gaming revenue paid to the state of Connecticut through the Mashantucket Pequot Fund – a first-of-its-kind revenue-sharing agreement between a tribe and state (est. 1993). For more than 25 years, the Tribe has provided generous contributions to local charitable organizations to support families and worthy causes throughout southeastern Connecticut. For more information, visit our website at www.mashantucket.org.

FROM OUR CEO

Dear Valued Guest,

N

Wuyeepuyôq–Welcom e!

ovember is Native American Heritage Month, and at Foxwoods Resort Casino we invite you to commemorate this special time of year with a visit to the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center. Experience the latest exhibits and gain a deeper understanding of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation’s history and culture – there is so much to learn! This month is also a time to pay respect to those who have served and the Honoring The Veterans Powwow on November 11 is an opportunity for veterans, active duty military and the general public to come together and thank our country’s servicemen and servicewomen. The leaves may change, but the Foxwoods commitment to world-class entertainment does not, as evidenced by this month’s show-stopping lineup. Kicking off November direct from the Las Vegas Strip is MINDFREAK LIVE! starring Criss Angel, an unparalleled display with non-stop original and revolutionary illusions brought to life in front of your eyes. The world’s most innovative magic spectacle runs from November 2 through November 5, and again December 14 through 17. Looking to turn up the heat? Then don’t miss legendary former boy band 98°, who will be performing hit tracks off their new Christmas album on November 24. Those looking for a laugh are in for a treat as two of America’s funniest working comics, Tracy Morgan and Mike Birbiglia, are taking their stand-up routines to the state-of-the-art Fox Theater on November 18 and November 25, respectively. Ciao, foodies! Keep an eye out for the exciting, grand opening of Caputo Trattoria, a brand-new dining experience set to open

this winter in the Grand Pequot Tower, featuring authentic Italian cuisine from various regions, including coastal classics, Roman favorites and Northern delicacies. To book your reservations, please visit Foxwoods.com/reserve-your-table. The Holiday Season kicks off as several Foxwoods restaurants offer delicious Thanksgiving meals that fit any budget. Stop by VUE 24, Cedars Steakhouse & Oyster Bar, Junior’s and more to get in the holiday spirit, and let Foxwoods' renowned chefs prepare an unforgettable feast for you and your loved ones! Foxwoods Resort Casino is proud to bring back the 5th annual “Stuff the Bus” seasonal giving campaign to benefit those in need. From November 4 to December 11, unwrapped toys, blankets, pajamas, jackets and diapers will be collected in support of the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut and its “Tommy Toy” Fund program. Contributions will be accepted from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 a.m. daily at the Foxwoods Bus Terminal, as well as at all Foxwoods hotel lobbies and select locations in the Tanger Outlets at Foxwoods. Enjoy your stay and thank you to our wonderful guests for making Foxwoods The Wonder Of It All. Happy Holidays! Kutaputush – I thank you. Warmest Regards,

Felix Rappaport President and Chief Executive Officer Foxwoods Resort Casino

yndi Torraca remembers the transformative days of Foxwoods, before the Bingo Hall and hotels. “Things have changed so much since we started,” she says. “I remember when there were no houses but ours, there was nothing here. It was just us. The first houses came in 1984. Foxwoods opening changed our whole world.” That was over 25 years ago, and yes, much has changed. Cyndi Torraca is also the sister of former tribal chairman Skip Hayward, which gives her a unique perspective on all the wonder that has transpired here. “Having these people, Tribal Members, come here was a big deal,” she says. “I couldn’t believe we were all related. I didn’t even realize I was Native until I was 14. Then we moved back here in my sophomore year of high school. My grandmother, Elizabeth George, had passed away and we moved into the homestead. I graduated from here.”

CY NDI TOR R ACA

In the early days, everyone did everything. Cyndi got married and went right to work on the booming reservation. She was the first bookkeeper for HUD housing on the reservation, doing payroll and working with grants and projects. She had a talent for Tribal government.

Cyndi worked her way up in Credit from a rep to a senior credit rep to assistant director, all while earning her degree with two kids at home. They are the pride of her life. “My kids are great – they were my support in school, and we would check in with each other and study together.” Both of Cyndi’s kids earned master’s degrees. Today, her daughter is a Special Ed teacher, and her son is part of Native Way Blend and working for Zegna in Manhattan. In 1998, Cyndi started in Human Resources as the Assistant CHRO (Chief Human Resources Officer). In 2012, she became Director of Government Human Resources and Native American Preference. “We have been through so many changes, and now we have more Tribal Members working for Foxwoods than ever before,” she says. “It used to be our members were more involved in the government side. We now have almost 800 adult members and we have about 260 of our members working at Foxwoods.” When she’s not organizing Round Table discussions for the government and putting together boards with Tribal Council, Cyndi enjoys her hobbies – knitting, golf, boating. This winter maybe even some skiing is on the table. For Foxwoods 25-year team member Cyndi Torraca, there’s always something to do – and new friends to make.

CELEBR ATION AN EXTR AORDINARY JOURNEY

Getting to Know Jean Swift, Treasurer Jean M. Swift is the Treasurer of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council, and has served on Tribal Council since October 24, 2013. Treasurer Swift chairs the Tribe’s Finance and Housing Committees, and serves as Vice Chair for the Tribe’s Endowment Board of Directors. She is a Certified Public Accountant in the state of Connecticut, a Certified Credit Union Financial Counselor, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Connecticut Community Credit Union as its Supervisory Committee Chair. Treasurer Swift is a member of business honor society Beta Gamma Sigma through the University of Connecticut, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration – graduating Magna Cum Laude. She earned her Master’s Degree in Business Administration from DeVry University’s Keller Graduate School of Management in Chicago, Illinois, graduating with Honors. Treasurer Swift began her career as an auditor for Coopers and Lybrand in Hartford, Connecticut. After earning her C.P.A. license, she entered the Management Development Program with the Dexter Corporation in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. Treasurer Swift served as a Financial Advisor to Tribal Council, where she led a team of managers and consultants to bring credit union services to employees of the Tribal government and Foxwoods Resort Casino. After moving to Chicago, Treasurer Swift worked as the Assistant Controller for the Moody Bible Institute. She later became a liaison to the Native American Bank on behalf of former Chairman Kenneth Reels.

What are you looking forward to doing before the end of 2017? I’m very much looking forward to spending the holidays with some of my family and friends that I don’t get to see very often. That time is truly special and I value it all the more as the years pass. What is your philosophy in life? To whom much is given, much is required. Everyone is my neighbor (so I implicitly have a duty of care). Real JOY is expressed in the priorities of Jesus, Others, You. What is a goal that you plan to accomplish during your current term as Treasurer? To convey a vision of the Tribe’s Long-term Financial Sustainability Plan so that it’s wholeheartedly embraced by Tribal Members, Management, Team Members, and other key stakeholders. Some exciting new thrill offerings have recently opened or are coming to Foxwoods. What are you looking forward to trying first? Although I’m not personally a thrill seeker, I continue to be an advocate for us to move in the direction of Adventure. I’m very excited for Foxwoods to be a world-class destination resort that offers gaming, dining, shopping, and adventure! Don’t forget that there’s amazing spa and golf facilities, too! What would a fun family night at Foxwoods include? My husband, Wade, and I treasure time with our young adult kids. A wonderful family time at Foxwoods would include dinner at Sugar Factory, followed by bowling at High Rollers or “duking it out” on the course at the soon-to-open On Track Karting venue. I can’t wait!

COMMU NIT Y T H E F O X WO OD S C O M M I T M E N T: M A K I N G A DI F F E R E N C E

November is Native American Heritage Month

N

ative American Heritage Month (NAHM) is a period of time historically designated to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people, educate the public about tribes, and to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present. In 1990 the President designated the month of November as National American Indian Heritage Month. Since then, annual proclamations have been issued to honor the federal-Indian fiduciary obligations, while strengthening federal-tribal government-to-government relationships. Among the many responsibilities the federal government has committed to Indian tribes is the protection of their sacred sites. Without these sacred sites, tribal communities would lose their cultural identity. These places are essential for our communities to pass on traditions, language, and beliefs to the next generation. Tribal religious beliefs and practices are directly tied to specific geographical places. If those specific places are destroyed or altered, those unique tribal religious beliefs and practices will no longer exist and the impacted tribes will lose their ability to freely exercise their religion. Because of the unique status of Indian tribes in the history of the United States, protecting their spiritually and culturally-important sites also has historical value for the nation as a whole.

What can you, as a private citizen do to contribute to the protection of these important sites? To help protect the physical integrity of sacred sites for ceremonial use, be kind to the land by adhering to the following recommendations: Understand and respect the fact that Native peoples may not wish to share information about their sacred sites and that, in some cases, such information is actually protected by law. Such information may be culturally inappropriate to be shared with someone outside the community or there may be deep mistrust that the information will be misused.

Contact any Indian tribes that may live in the vicinity of tribal historic preservation officers in the state, especially if you are planning an activity that may alter parts of landscapes or are planning to sell land that could be culturally important to a tribe or tribes. Ask whether an Indian tribe has an historical or current interest and ask what you can do to avoid harming any sacred sites.

However, it is often possible to gain some understanding by researching local customs and being aware of sacred events that are known to the public, such as feast days, voluntary bans on climbing, observance times when sites should not be visited, being respectful of prayer bundles, and driving slowly during sacred runs/horse rides

Walk lightly while visiting public lands, and keep in mind that the beautiful places we all enjoy may be sacred to Indian tribes. Do no harm by not cutting down plants or digging into the land unless the proper permission has been granted.

Q&A

Christina Clifton, VP of Food & Beverage What is your overall vision for the Foxwoods dining experience? My vision is to create great experiences in each venue that make Foxwoods a dining destination.

What food trends are you seeing, and how will they affect Foxwoods’ offerings moving forward? Sustainable products are still at the top of the trend list. This takes us in a direction to use local produce, grains and meats, and also create a variety of dishes that include gluten-free and vegan choices. What is your favorite entrée of the hundreds offered at Foxwoods? At this time it is the Colorado Lamb Chops offered at VUE 24. Chef Mike prepares this dish to perfection. If you had to recommend one thing for guests to do at Foxwoods, what would it be? Relax and take advantage of the beautiful property and all it has to offer. What is your favorite dish to make at home? Duck Confit. What would you say is the most underrated wine? Chinon from Loire Valley. It is a Cabernet Franc, which is a great food wine. What is your favorite cooking show? PBS has great cooking shows; Lidia Bastianich is my favorite. What is your favorite indulgence? Anything with duck fat. What are the top three items on your bucket list? Live in Paris, write a book, own a champagne and wine bar. What are you most excited about at Foxwoods looking ahead to 2018? The development of Foxwoods Adventures, which will attract more excitement and guests to the property.

This year’s annual campaign will begin on November 4 and will continue through December 11. During the five-week campaign contributions will be accepted from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 a.m daily at the Foxwoods Bus Terminal as well as at select locations in the Tanger Outlets at Foxwoods. “Our annual Stuff the Bus campaign has been a tremendous success and we are proud to continue to support this and many other important charitable initiatives along with our loyal guests and team members,” said Felix Rappaport, President & CEO of Foxwoods Resort Casino. “Last year’s campaign resulted in nearly 16,000 donated toys which directly impacted thousands of area children and families during the holiday season, and we look forward to surpassing those tremendous results in 2017.” The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and its enterprises continue to embrace ongoing commitment to giving back to the community through dozens of initiatives including providing more than two million meals to local individuals and families in Southeastern, CT. These annual programs continued as part of a long standing partnership between the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut and the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center, located in New London, Connecticut, along with the employees, guests and friends of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and Foxwoods Resort Casino. To kick off this year’s “Stuff the Bus” campaign, Foxwoods will once again host a launch celebration which will take place on Saturday, November 4 at 11:00 a.m. in front of the Grand Pequot Tower. Members of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and Foxwoods Executive Team will officially start the program by making donations of their own.
