he Mashantucket Pequots are a Native Algonquin people who have endured centuries of conflict and survival on and around North America’s oldest Indian reservation (est. 1666), located in southeastern Connecticut. In 1637, the Pequots survived the first genocidal massacre attempt against an Indian Tribe by Europeans on what would become continental United States soil. Pequot history is an unprecedented story of redemption and restoration, which is featured at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center. Today, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation owns and operates one of the largest and most successful gaming resorts in North America – Foxwoods® Resort Casino – along with a variety of other enterprises, including the Lake of Isles Golf Course, Pequot Pharmaceutical Network, and The Spa at Norwich Inn. ichard Roy has been proudly building things, and relationships, at Foxwoods since 1991. Despite initially coveting a position in engineering, Richard accepted a nighttime valet position to start, while taking dealer classes during the day.

Most people that were part of the grand opening of Foxwoods recall what an exciting time it was, and Richard was right in the middle of the action. “I remember lines around the whole parking lot. Initially they hadn’t planned to be open for 24 hours, but management realized there was no way to close, so shift managers were scrambling, trying to put together last-minute, overnight schedules,” said Richard. In keeping with the Five Star Service tradition at Foxwoods, Richard even had to learn a special poker game just for Kenny Rogers. “I was one of two dealers that dealt for Kenny Rogers, as he had a special way to play. It was a great experience, and I remember him giving me tickets to see him perform.”

A degree in theatre design made Richard a natural for Engineering’s Fabrication Department, where he would end up making long-standing contributions to the scenery and general aesthetics of Foxwoods.

It was only a matter of time before Richard moved on to the job he initially sought, in the Engineering Department as a carpenter. In that position, he has had a hand in building some of Foxwoods most iconic structures, including the Great Cedar Hotel. Outside of Foxwoods, Richard has spent the last ten years as part of the Chorus of Westerly, which recently performed in Germany and sang the national anthem at Fenway Park. Richard and his wife were married in 2014, and he has a daughter currently in college. He also has a 5-year-old dog named Pepper who is a Schnauzer-Yorkie mix. “I love my job at Foxwoods,” said Richard. “I’m proud of my work. There are a lot of go-to guys here, and I am happy to be one of them.”

Getting to Know Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Secretary Crystal Whipple What is your proudest accomplishment as a Tribal Leader? My proudest accomplishment is working with Tribal Members Wayne Reels, Jeremy Whipple and the Historical & Cultural Preservation Committees to get input from the community and support from Tribal Council, to put our cultural/powwow grounds in the heart of our community.

What would a girls' weekend at Foxwoods include? A girls’ weekend would include a morning hike and meditation on Lantern Hill, followed by an in-room breakfast buffet, and spa treatments. We would have lunch at Cedars, and then do some shopping and relaxation before dinner at VUE 24. Of course, the night wouldn’t end without drinks, dancing, and gambling! Sunday would include more shopping and more spa treatments! Crystal M. Whipple is the Secretary of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council, and she began her third term of office in 2017. Ms. Whipple chairs the Tribe’s Education and Administrative Support Committees. Ms. Whipple previously served on the Tribal Council for two consecutive three-year terms, which included two years as Vice Chairwoman, serving on the Board of Directors for United South and Eastern Tribes (USET), and chairing the Tribe’s Administrative Support and Historical & Cultural Preservation Committees. Over 25 years working in Tribal Government, Ms. Whipple has served as Chair and Vice Chair of the Tribe’s Business Advisory Board – an executive body that oversaw the Tribe’s non-gaming enterprises and commercial properties. Her volunteer work included service on the Tribe’s Parent Advisory Board, Education Committee and Tribal Housing Authority, as well as serving on the Board of Managers for Foxwoods Massachusetts, LLC. Ms. Whipple previously held positions at Pequot Pharmaceutical Network, and has served as executive staff to the Tribal Manager, Chief of Staff, and Tribal Council. She holds an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of New Haven, and is a graduate of Ledyard High School.

What would be the most amazing adventure to go on? The most amazing adventure would be a trip to Cape Verde, to explore and visit each island.

What is your favorite childhood memory of growing up on the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation? My favorite childhood memory would be meeting my husband as a young boy, and him calling me “Diamond” instead of Crystal. We've known each other since the age of 11, and we are blessed to raise our boys where we grew up.

What makes you laugh the most? I tend to find humor in much of my everyday life, but nothing makes me laugh like the honesty of children.

Making a Difference at the #1 Course in Connecticut On Monday, September 11, 2017, the world-class Lake of Isles golf course at Foxwoods Resort Casino will host the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation’s 12th annual Drive 4 Diabetes golf tournament. Since 2006, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation’s Drive 4 Diabetes has raised millions to support efforts in finding a cure for diabetes, promoting healthier lifestyles, and providing information to assist others in making informed choices. “Our goal is to bring attention to this important disease that affects so many people in our community,” said Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation Chairman Rodney Butler. “The money raised helps fund programs geared toward educating people in prevention and maintenance of diabetes.”

According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes affects 29 million people in the United States, and is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic lower-limb amputations, and new cases of blindness among adults. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, and nearly 17 percent of all Native Americans have diabetes, the highest among all U.S. racial and ethnic groups. Proper education in regard to diabetes causes, management and treatment is needed now more than ever, as there are an estimated 86 million people living with pre-diabetes; 90% of whom are unaware of their pre-diabetic state. Throughout the past twelve years, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation’s Drive 4 Diabetes has provided 6

A three-time All-American at Stanford University, Begay went on to win four PGA tournaments. In 2005, Notah launched the Notah Begay III (NB3) Foundation to battle obesity and diabetes in Native American youth. In 2009, Begay was named one of Golf Magazine’s Innovators of the Year for his philanthropic work, and has also been named one of the Top 100 Sports Educators in the world by the Institute for International Sport. Lake of Isles is the #1 golf course in Connecticut, with over 7,300 yards of manicured fairways and greens. In 2015, Golf Magazine listed the Lake of Isles among its “Top 100 Courses You Can Play.”
