A Dress Rehearsal for the Messiah’s Return by The Rev. Dr. Stuart Baskin As I write these words, I am in the midst of final preparations for a trip to Pakistan to visit our Presbyterian schools there. By the time you read these words, I will be back in Tyler. So, you will forgive me if my attention is focused abroad at the moment. We all know that Advent is about waiting with hopeful expectation. At one level, we look forward to the annual celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. At another level, we look forward to the return of the Messiah to our weary world. These things are true. But as I look forward to my time in Pakistan, I am thinking of yet another level of waiting with hopeful expectation: preparation. I daresay we American Christians mostly give lip service to the idea of the return of the Messiah. We affirm it in the Nicene Creed (He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end) but we hardly give it a second thought, let alone prepare ourselves for it. It is one of those things that seems to us to be part of a time horizon so far in the future that it holds little meaning to us. If this trip to Pakistan is anything like the last trip, I expect to be overwhelmed with hospitality. When we arrive to visit each school, we sometimes have to wait a few minutes until the faculty, staff, and stu-

dents are ready to welcome us. When they are ready, they throw a welcome ceremony worthy of a visiting head of state. Often there is a little marching band to perform for us and then lead us into the school ground. The walkway will be lined with children throwing flower petals, and each one of us will be draped with a lei. Then, if there is a new building to be dedicated or a groundbreaking to do, there will be a large outdoor tent with seating for several hundred, including parents, and there will be performances by the children. It is very clear that the staff, faculty, and children have spent a lot of time getting ready for us. That’s sort of what I mean by preparing for the coming of the Messiah. It’s about dropping everything and making preparations that are appropriate for the occasion. We practice our preparations by decorating our homes, purchasing gifts, cooking more food than we need or is good for us, and sending Christmas cards to one another. We’ll take a break from our routines to celebrate Christmas. But this is only practice. Preparing for the Messiah’s return means preparing not just our homes but our lives. Preparing our lives, in turn, means cultivating a sense of hopeful expectation. May your Advent preparations be a dress rehearsal for the coming of the Messiah into this weary world.

In the Lucado bible study, Because of Bethlehem, we read that because God came to earth in human form and experienced what we experience, he understands us. And because he understands us, we can boldly go to him. “Because of Bethlehem’s miracle, we can answer some fundamental questions:

Does God care when we’re sad? Just look at the tear-streaked face of Jesus as he stands near Lazarus’ tomb.

Does God notice when we’re afraid? Note the resolve in Jesus’ eyes as he marches through the stormy seas to rescue his friends.

Does God know if we’re ignored? Does he know if we’re rejected? We’ll find the answer in the compassionate eyes of Christ as he stands to defend the adulterous woman.”

So, does God hear us when we pray? In the manger is a message, and in that message is the answer. (If you would like to submit a prayer request, please fill out the form found in the church pew and drop it in the collection plate or into a prayer request box found in the Chapel, Sanctuary, and church office.)

Student Ministry News:

December will be a time to celebrate hope and joy as we enter the season of Advent! Each Sunday, we will be venturing into C. S. Lewis’s magical land of Narnia, as the youth will be studying Heidi Haverkamp’s devotional book, Advent in Narnia. • On Sunday, December 9, at noon, we’ll be like “Buddy the Elf” and spread “Christmas cheer for all to hear” by caroling at local nursing homes. • On Wednesday, December 19, at 6 pm, we’ll celebrate our youth group family at Chuy’s Restaurant for the All-Youth Christmas party! Visit fpctyler.com/events/smchristmas. Contact Jenni (jmarshall@fpctyler.com/803-924-0576) for more information.

FPC’s youth went on a mission to help others and to have fun together! At Senior High Small Group, the youth prepared five chicken casseroles for our guests at the Potter House. On Sunday, November 4, middle school and high school youth gathered on the front lawn of the church for a high-energy game of capture the flag with color powder pellets. We were all covered in bright splats of blue, yellow, purple, pink, and orange by the end of our festivities! On Sunday, November 11, our youth helped prepare the Griffin Gym for PATH’s Coats for Kids winter coat drive. Thanks to all who helped with our mission projects!

Blue Christmas: A Service of Remembrance and Hope By The Rev. Pamela Leach Who do you know who may be facing a difficult time this holiday season? The reasons vary - hardships related to health or finances, broken relationships, lost loved ones. No matter the reason, each December inevitably finds many sitting out of the holiday festivities or simply going through the motions because the joy of the season has become elusive. For those in the midst of grief and hardship, we offer again this Advent a Blue Christmas service centered not on the joy of the season, but on

the hope that is ours in Christ Jesus. Indeed, the message of Advent is one of hope and faith. As we gather at this service, we will claim the truth expressed in Luke that, “By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace” (1:78-9). Prayerfully consider whom you know who may need a place to sit quietly before the One who is with us in the darkness of our sorrow and will see us through to the morning when joy

shall return. Cards with ser v ice information can be found on the tables outside the sanctuar y or in the c h u r c h office. These can be taken to share with your personal invitation to attend the Blue Christmas service on Sunday, December 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary.

Christmas Poinsettias—Order Now Every year during the Christmas season, the Sanctuary is filled with poinsettias in honor and in memory of this congregation’s beloved family and friends. If you would like to contribute a poinsettia to this tradition, please clearly print your information below and return in the offering plate or to the church office by Monday, December 10. Your generous donations support the Fine Arts ministry, which makes FPC a beacon for fine music and the arts in East Texas. There is no minimum suggested donation. Your generous gifts are very much appreciated.
