Shana Tova! Rosh Hashanah 5777
From the Editor pat lehner After the last couple of really hot days, at the tail end of summer, the rain came. And a day or two later we looked up early one morning and noticed the leaves had started to turn, and so, quietly, gently and gracefully autumn is suddenly with us - and we come to synagogue to celebrate the beginning of another new year. It’s a bit later than usual, but just as every year, the air seems to sparkle with promises, whether walking through the gates of the synagogue or kicking up damp leaves on a misty Heath walk. You can tell how much I’m looking forward to this time of renewal and stocktaking. The chance to pause and take a moment to breathe and focus is often a gift to be cherished in busy years. If this sounds like you, then what better place to share and enjoy than here a FPS: from our “mindful walking into the new year” to services for young and old there is space and opportunity to reflect, pause and meet your FPS family. We look forward to seeing you all and welcome the new year together. Shana Tova - wishing you all a sweet and lovely new year from Shofar! reflective and mindful walking

From the Rabbi rabbi rebecca birk
Hashiveinu Adonai Elecha, V’Nashuva Turn us back to You and we shall return. The season of new intentions and renewed commitments is upon us. By secular dating it’s late. We’ve been back at school for nearly a month and the trees have turned already and started shedding their golden leaves. It’s poignant and yet full of promise in that strange way Autumn has. And that is the best of Rosh Hashanah, the opportunities to turn those leaves over, to write the scroll of our lives how we intend them to be. We talk of returning home; “teshuvah” is that. We return to face new possibilities and new experiences. My wish for all of us is that Jewish life and our own internal worlds should meet. So I invite you to use the synagogue you are part of. Get what you need and give as well, because in that can be great rewards. Monty Bixer said to me recently, “I am a belonger not a believer…” And I wondered about that.
That is the best of Rosh Hashanah, the opportunities to turn those leaves over, to write the scroll of our lives how we intend them to be. I sat next to Laura Marks OBE at a wedding last month. Laura is the founder of Mitzvah Day and senior vice president of the Board of Deputies. I asked her what had sparked her passion for her Judaism in adult life. She had grown up with a secular Habonim Dror ethos. “Having my adult Bat Mitzvah at Temple Immanuel of Hollywood, when we lived there.” She explained the classes that brought her closer to Torah and its potential meanings.
The ability to read and to an extent understand Hebrew and the experience of being part of a learning community in a synagogue switched her on. I was not surprised. I understood what she described as needing a goal to direct her learning. It is never too late to learn these skills and never too late to benefit from the huge gifts that engaged community life offer. Our first adult Bat Mitzvah class was three years ago when five women learned together with Rabbi Rene and myself. I cannot promise Hollywood in our title but I can promise a new Adult B’nei Mitzvah class beginning this autumn, for just such an experience. This is the moment of new intentions and possibilities for ourselves and our community. And it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham and God said to him, “Abraham, “and he said, “Here I am.” (Gen 22:1). Where will you be on Rosh Hashanah as we start that ten day journey together? What plans and promises might you make? Will coming home include this place of belonging? Shana Tova! 3
From the Chair alex kinchin-smith
I was talking to a non-Jewish colleague at work a couple of weeks ago and as we were arranging an event I explained I was busy on the evenings of both the 11th and 12th of October and so Yom Kippur came up in our discussion. He said to me – so what do you do on this Day of Atonement then? My short answer was that I fasted, went to synagogue and atoned for my sins. After joking how that must take a lot of praying and fasting he concluded ‘so sort of like wiping the slate clean’. ‘Something like that’ I said. The conversation started me thinking about the year, and beginning to prepare for the coming season. As it had begun at work I started by considering my year in the workplace which has once again been one of change. New government, new London Mayor and then the EU referendum, followed of course by another new government. Then the world at large: from the evening standard, 7 september
refugee crises, terrorism and immigration dominating politics home and abroad. And then the past year for Finchley Progressive, again significantly coloured by migration and refugees from our work with Syrians and now seeking to assist minors from the ‘Jungle’ camp in Calais. It seemed to me that this really was the dominant theme of the past 12 months. So how should I use the month ahead? It is not about ‘wiping the slate clean’ as my colleague suggested. But rather a time to reflect and reset – mentally and spiritually. For me Shabbat has this purpose each week, giving us the time to rest from the working week just gone and refresh for the one ahead. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur allow for a more significant ‘re-boot’ once a year and a chance to resolve to make changes to our lives if we feel they are necessary. I look forward to seeing many of you in synagogue over the High Holy Day season. And I wish you a very Happy New year from myself, Paula, Jacob and Asher. Shana Tova!

Clive Noel Winston rabbi rebecca birk
20 april 1925 – 11 august 2016
Clive Winston was an unusual man. Not a person who knew him has not commented on Clive’s ability to speak his mind, articulately and frankly. Clive evoked respect. He was a good friend to many, candid, sharp but always loyal. And he did it all with grace. Clive’s life made him who he was, and his tenacity and grace affected how he was. He was born in 1925 in Muswell Hill to Aleen and George Winston - a brother to Warwick. His father was a furniture manufacturer from a German background and his mother was from a Portuguese background. When war broke out he was evacuated to Devon, which he enjoyed. He then went on to Trinity Hall, Cambridge to study law but his studies were interrupted when he was called up for war service. He served from 1943-1947, initially with the Grenadier Guards and then went out to India and Burma and served in the 15th Punjab Regiment. He was discharged in 1947 with the rank of Captain. He became a Member of the Law Society in 1951. Having decided that private practice was not for him, he joined the prosecuting department of the Metropolitan Police as a prosecuting solicitor. He retired in 1985 as Dep. Chief and then spent the next 3 years working for the Federation Against Copyright Theft. Clive and Betty met at the LJS Alumni club and they married in 1952 at the LJS, St John’s
Wood. They joined FPS in 1969 and he went on to become Chair. He brought all his wit and skill at managing people into his honorary office in his Liberal Judaism. Joan, Alan and Josie, fellow and succeeding officers at FPS remember AGMs were never dull with Clive in the Chair as President, he did not suffer fools gladly but believed in democracy and business in synagogue life. He cared about his synagogue greatly and ULPS/LJ. He was a true Liberal Jew. With characteristic humility he declined a present when he stepped down as life president and requested something for the synagogue. We still use his chumash regularly. Always able to respond to new challenges, he maintained the garden that he and Betty tended together in their Cockfosters bungalow. He learned to cook and he loved his new cat Georgie. He honed his bridge skills when golf eluded him. He loved his sports, listening to cricket, his beloved Arsenal. Penny recalls a radio specifically and always set to Five Live Sports channel. He lived life fully. He had no regrets and he coped with his illness stoically and graciously. More than anything he had a keen sense of family: Betty and their life together, and Penny and Wendy and his granddaughters Jessica and Fiona. His love and his pride in their achievements was a source of great joy to him. Continued on page 7 5

Letter from Lima the boneff family london to lima
My last newsletter was about looking forward and this newsletter is about looking back… well, only to share with you the joy at being able to return to London after a 1½ year absence! One of the main reasons for coming back was to be able to have our son Oliver become Bar Mitzvah at FPS. We were thrilled to be able to do this on 23 July and have Rabbi Rebecca officiate which was the icing on the cake! It was lovely to reconnect with some
of you and to once more enjoy the inclusive nature of our community and the wonderful music which is sadly lacking in our Peruvian community. For those of you who sometimes feel that it is maybe too Rock’n’Roll, I can tell
12
you that sitting in synagogue with no music at all feels like something is definitely lacking. We were lucky enough to enjoy three weeks of glorious weather and all that is wonderful about London when the sun shines. I returned to Lima wearing rose tinted glasses and it has made settling back very hard. The children were able to enjoy a freedom of movement in London which they do not have in Lima because it is not safe for them to use public transport here. This probably sounds strange to some of you who think that with all the current political and social problems in England that it is not a safe place to be, but I want to assure you that seen from my experience it still is. I thoroughly enjoyed being back in this vibrant and cosmopolitan city. We loved walking around the huge London parks, enjoying trips to the theatre and free museums. When we looked up we saw gorgeous buildings, modern and historic, that we all forget to notice when we live somewhere all our lives. We ate a huge variety of different cuisines, which I miss in Lima (although a new Indian restaurant is about to open!). As the Jewish New Year approaches I am trying to hold on to these precious memories and remind myself how lucky we were to be able to come home, and at the same time, we are looking forward to the coming year and wondering what new experiences await us and new friends that we will make. Shana Tova to you all! Love, The Bonneffs

christmas shelter
For the past few years, FPS has worked with other synagogues and churches to host the Together in Barnet Homeless Shelter. Between us, we provide shelter, an evening meal and breakfast for up to 17 homeless people, who spend one night a week at each venue. This year we will be hosting at FPS on Tuesdays of the second session, running from 13 December 2016 to 14 February 2017. We will be looking for cooks, hosts, people to sleep over and do the breakfast shift. Forms will be going out shortly for you to sign up. Anyone who has volunteered will confirm that our guests rapidly become our friends!
The shelter is due to shift the Finchley Reform for the Christmas period, from 23 December to 27th December. This has been run for the past couple of years by a group of synagogues working together to provide a festive break for those normally supported by the TIB Shelter. Last year we were also able to invite some recently housed friends who would otherwise have been alone, as day guests. FPS has provided entertainers, food, chat, table tennis, Christmas Stockings etc…… A call for support will go out in due course!
New volunteers will be asked to do an evening’s training, with the next one scheduled for Monday 28 November. Please contact me, Andrea Narcin for further information at andrea_narcin@yahoo.co.uk or mobile 07969 47152 living alone?
New Horizons It was the last day of the school year and I was nine years old. Ahead of us were not holidays on far away beaches, but six weeks playing in the street in shadow of the gas holders, surrounded by 1940’s post war grime. Our lovely teacher brought out a carrier bag in which she had a small wrapped gift for each of us: a beautiful, fresh notebook and pencil. We were required to write down at least one thing a day. It was to be something we had experienced, seen, heard or touched, that we found beautiful. We had a dummy run in the classroom with a little
guidance from her. That summer my life was transformed. So, I share this with you in the hope that you will have a sweet and beauty-filled New Year. “The voyage of discovery lies Not in finding new landscapes, But in having new eyes.” Marcel Proust (French Novelist, 1871-1922) Rochelle Simmons

At time of writing this we have 3 projects lining up; We hope to again be tidying Highgate Cemetery (which has always been great fun and of great value to the wider community); we also hope to send out musicians to two both Lady Sarah Cohen, and Ruben Shine care homes, and have a selection of activities in house at the synagogue. sam conroy bar mitzvah
Hi, my name is Sam and I’ll be thirteen on 30 September. Most of my years have been spent coming to FPS at the weekend. At Ivriah we’ve been taught a variety of subjects such as Hebrew and Jewish Studies which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. I play guitar with Dean in the family service. My Parasha is Ki Tisa when God renews the covenant with Moses and passes before him. I’ve taken pleasure practising it and having lessons with Elliott as sometimes we have discussed certain elements of the Parasha and Judaism. Most of my summer was spent either away from home, playing cricket or on my tablet as well as practising for my Bar-Mitzvah. I hope to see you at my Bar-Mitzvah on 22 October.
