welcome

Inside this issue…

Note from the MD Dear Customer,

Welcome to the latest issue of Vital News. And let me start by wishing you a Happy New Year! After a tough 2012, last year eased slightly with some growth in the aftermarket. This year we hope for continued success, and as I write this, a burst of winter weather will hopefully help sales on their way. Although newspapers are forecasting the ‘worst winter for decades’, it will probably result in it being incredibly mild! 2014 brings with it many new opportunities for FPS, and in turn our customers. We continue to invest in range infill and increased availability in order to give motor factors more product and brand choice. In December we expanded our component stock ranges at a number of our branches in order to have more parts available for immediate delivery. We have also just finished a mezzanine floor extension to the main Sheffield warehouse to allow us to hold more lines. One programme that will fill some of these shelves will be Shaftec driveshafts and CV joints. This product area has been under review for some time as it’s an area, where to be honest, we needed to improve. Having looked at the options, Shaftec is clearly an expert in this product area, making it an ideal partner to offer a good quality product with substantially improved range and availability. Furthermore, Gates water pump kits have proved a real success following considerable efforts being put behind the programme in 2013, bringing valuable incremental sales opportunities for customers. We expect further strong interest and growth in this range for 2014, so do contact us to see how

it can grow your sales if you are not already stocking it. In addition to our component extensions, we have also expanded our consumables range. Having launched initially in 2012, this programme has developed well, opening up additional revenues for many of our customers. On the back of this success, January 2014 sees the launch of our consumables catalogue, which includes over 1,500 new products.

BMW 125i 2.0 (05/12>) VW Polo 1.4 BlueGT (10/12>)

During November, FPS introduced over 2,100 additions from 32 different suppliers. Highlights include:

• F ebi Timing Chain (part number 38362) for BMW 125i 2.0 (05/12>)

• G S Titan AGM Battery (part number 027AGM) for VW Polo 1.4 BlueGT (10/12>)

Conversion and Service Kits from Valeo FPS is pleased to announce the launch of Valeo conversion and service kits. The new range consists of 123 part numbers, with a further 17 references scheduled to be added during the first quarter of 2014. Many popular references are covered by this introduction, including a conversion kit for the Ford Transit 2.4D (00>) and a service kit for Citroën C5 2.0 HDi (01-04). A Valeo conversion kit includes a solid flywheel, clutch cover, friction plate, release bearing and all necessary components to make a complete conversion. As the rigid flywheel doesn’t wear, the kits eliminate the need to replace the whole clutch system in the future, providing significant savings. This makes the conversion kit popular with the older vehicle parc and/or LCV applications prone to high mileage. Once a conversion kit has been fitted, it is likely that only the drive plate, friction plate and bearing need replacing in the future, which are all provided in the Valeo service kit offering.

BGA Timing Chain Kits BGA has introduced 29 Timing Chain Kit references in 2013, including TC2360FK and TC2365FK for the Ford Transit Mk 7. This timing chain is prone to failure because of the poor maintenance of the engine – if the oil and oil filter are not changed regularly and the engine is not flushed at the same time, the components will wear and ultimately fail. Further references added to the range include TC5400FK, which fits Mazda 3 1.6 B6ZE, and TC2025FK, which fits various BMW 1 & 3 Series.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION 3

QRS multi-ribbed v belts will be supplied in sleeves for easy stock management

Discover QRS VITAL NEWS speaks to QRS, the latest addition to FPS’ powertrain offering. In order to strengthen its product offering, FPS has recently introduced QRS into its components portfolio. QRS provides competitively priced power transmission solutions designed to meet or exceed OEM specifications. The new range of belts and OAP/OADs sits alongside FPS’ current premium power transmission offering, providing customers with an entry level solution and ultimately more choice. While FPS continues to support and encourage investment in its key tier one suppliers, in a varying market which is ever changing, QRS represents an additional opportunity by providing a cost effective solution for price conscious customers. To satisfy this increasing demand for choice, FPS has recently introduced a range of timing belts and OAPs/OADs from QRS, and will be launching multi-ribbed v belts shortly. Both ranges have been developed to reflect the latest trends in the market. A short range of fast moving references will be available covering over 45% of the UK car parc, focusing on popular applications.

Quality Matters A quality belt is essential for the correct workings of the accessory and timing belt systems. If the quality of the belt is compromised and the timing belt breaks, this can result in severe and costly engine damage. If the accessory belt fails, power will be lost to all driven units and it is likely that the power steering will become heavy, ultimately leading to unsafe driving situations. That’s why QRS recommends, when servicing a vehicle, that both belts are inspected and replaced at the first signs of wear in order to prevent unnecessary failures. This is an important message which should

4 powertrain solutions

be communicated right through the supply chain, as not only does it prove to be an additional sales opportunity for the motor factor and garage alike, it also preserves the garages’ reputation and will provide the end-user with savings in the long run. When replacing the timing or multi-ribbed v belt, it is therefore important that a quality, reliable belt is selected. When choosing QRS, customers can rest assured that they are receiving a belt manufactured to meet or exceed OEM specifications, ensuring the smooth running of the belt systems.

Part numbers are clearly marked on each QRS belt

Composed of durable and reinforced rubber compounds, QRS timing belts are guaranteed to withstand the highest temperatures and impact produced by the car engine. Helically wound, fibreglass tensile cords increase the flexibility and stability of the belt, making it suitable for use on both older and more modern, compact engines which are working under increased pressures. This compound structure also prevents the belt from stretching. QRS’ multi-ribbed v belts are comprised of a fibre-reinforced EPDM compound which guarantees optimum performance under extreme engine temperatures. This compound also dampens the noise of the system, ensuring silent running. As with its timing belts, QRS multi-ribbed v belts offer great flexibility and optimal belt-to-pulley contact, making them suitable for all engine types.

vital news issue 33

All QRS belts are packaged in the eye-catching, blue branding and are individually marked to make them easily recognisable. In addition to this, multi-ribbed v belts have the specifications printed on the label, making stocking arrangements simpler for the motor factor. While the multi-ribbed v belts are supplied in sleeves, timing belts are provided in tamperproof sealed boxes, ensuring the belt has the necessary protection against crimping. Where relevant, timing belt packaging may feature a QR code. When scanned with a smartphone this QR code links to product specific technical bulletins which advise on installation and warn against common fitment errors.

QRS timing belts are provided in tamperproof sealed boxes and feature a QR code where a Technical Bulletin is applicable.

Trust QRS To ensure that products are fit for purpose, QRS parts undergo a rigorous testing procedure before leaving the factory, including durability and endurance testing. The QRS offering also conforms to the following standards: ISO9001, ISO14001 and ISO TS16949. To give customers peace of mind, all parts are covered by a two year or 20,000 mile warranty, whichever comes first. This warranty is effective from the date of installation of the component.

Quality Service from a Quality Brand Not only does QRS offer quality products, as a tier 2 power transmission proposition it also offers quality aftercare support. In addition to its warranty scheme, QRS offers first class service when it comes to technical assistance. With a team of dedicated advisors at hand to provide quick, professional solutions, the hotline is available Monday – Friday* to answer any technical or warranty queries. With ever-enhancing technologies and the production of more powerful engines, mechanical fitments are becoming increasingly difficult. Should a motor factor or garage experience any difficulties, the QRS hotline is the central contact point for support and expert advice. The hotline is accessible by calling 0844 980 0089* or alternatively by emailing technical@qrsauto.co.uk.

QRS Online To support its power transmission programme, QRS has recently launched a brand new website. The website features a full online

catalogue, allowing users to search the entire QRS range by part number (QRS or OE), cross reference, engine code or application. Users can also discover more about the QRS range, including product information, warranty and quality promise, as well as keep up-todate with the latest company news. There is also a handy ‘Downloads’ section, where users can download useful documents such as technical bulletins and warranty statements. You can visit the website today at www.qrsauto.co.uk

And Don’t Forget… In addition to its belting offering, QRS also has a range of fast moving OAP/OAD references, covering many popular applications. QRS OAP/OADs help to reduce noise, vibrations and harshness in the accessory belt QRS’ OAPs/OAD range was launched late 2013 system, ensuring that the belt runs smoothly. Each clutch pulley undergoes rigorous testing procedures and guarantees or exceeds OEM performance. Go Full Throttle with Cambiare

Cambiare explains to VITAL NEWS the importance of a fully functioning air supply system when it comes to driving performance. Following Cambiare’s development at the end of last year, the range saw the introduction of two products which are vital to the functionality of the vehicle’s air supply system: the throttle body and idle air control valve. Both products maintain driving performance by either controlling the air supply at all engine speeds or by preventing the vehicle from stalling while idling. Here, Cambiare explains the functionality and reasons for air supply failure, as well as the best steps to take during replacement.

Throttle Body and Idle Air Control Valve Functionality In simple terms, the throttle body controls the amount of air which is let into the engine during acceleration. This process is controlled by the movements of the accelerator pedal via a physical cable or by a throttle position sensor which is connected to the ECU. This mechanism will be dependent on application, however over the past 10 years there has been a shift towards throttle bodies controlled by the ECU.

Reasons for failure While lack of maintenance can lead to system failure, the most common cause within these parts is contamination. The carbon particles and oil mist in the crankcase ventilation system cause a build-up of carbon deposits within the throttle body which restricts the air flow and, in extreme cases, may cause the flap to stick so that air cannot reach the engine.

Air supply replacement As the throttle body and idle air control valve are not serviceable items, they are usually only replaced once a failure is detected. It should be noted that their failure is not always easy to instantly diagnose, as the driver will not be alerted by an engine management light on the dashboard. Diagnosis can only be made by analysing the fault code or visually inspecting the part. If there is a problem in the air supply system, Cambiare recommends checking the vacuum and breather hose for splits and Cambiare now has 67 idle air control valves in range correct fitment. If all is fine, a thorough inspection of the throttle body and idle air control valve should be undertaken. If wear or damage is detected, they should be replaced accordingly in order to prevent unnecessary failure in the future. The Cambiare hotline is on hand to help your customers with diagnosis and explain the OBD adaptation after fitment – call 0845 543 8280.

New to FPS: Cambiare throttle bodies

The idle air control valve can sit either within the throttle body itself or outside of it. It is responsible for controlling the air intake while the vehicle is in an idling state. By increasing the air flow to the engine, the engine speed is increased which in turn prevents a stationary vehicle from stalling. This process is controlled by the ECU; the ECU receives signals from various sensors which determine whether the vehicle is moving or not, hence whether the vehicle needs to maintain an idling state.

8 air supply system

The Cambiare range When replacing the throttle body or idle air control valve, it is important to choose a good quality replacement. Cambiare’s OEM range includes 67 idle air control valves and 19 throttle bodies, all of which are available for same-day or next-day delivery. Cambiare’s growing range allows customers to purchase engine components from one, simple source. Also available from FPS is the Pierburg range, which sits alongside Cambiare, including 28 throttle bodies and 16 idle air control valves.

quality BRAND WITH FITTING PRICES As a critical safety component, braking quality should never be compromised. Here VITAL NEWS introduces Braymann and explores its programme. Available in Janauary from FPS will be a comprehensive braking programme from Braymann. This range includes over 100 wear leads and 450 fitting kits for pads & shoes, as well as 40 adjusters. With driver safety at the forefront of its programme, the Braymann offering is manufactured to OE specifications and guarantees optimum performance. All parts are quality tested and comply with regulations, giving customers peace of mind that, while supplied at aftermarket prices, the product in the box replicates the OE profile. Each product is also backed by a 2 year warranty/24,000 mile warranty, whichever comes first.

A vehicle may have 1, 2 or 4 wear leads

Wear leads sit within the brake pad material, so once this is worn too low it causes a wire in the sensor to come into contact with the metal of the brake disc, creating an electrical circuit and causing a dashboard light to illuminate. Brake pad wear is dependent on a number of factors, such as driving style, so consequently there is no set interval for replacement. Brakes however are a serviceable item and should be monitored annually. If a garage discovers that the brake pads need replacing, the wear lead will need to be replaced also, proving to be an excellent cross selling opportunity for factors for brakes that don’t come incorporated with leads.

vital news issue 33

6591 FPS Vital News #33 Spring 14.indd 10

Braymann’s offering While what Braymann offers is of OE profile, the competitive pricing means that factors have more choice when it comes to fulfilling their customers’ braking needs. Braymann is one of the very few suppliers in the aftermarket to offer a full programme of wear leads & braking accessories; a programme which proves to be an excellent upsell opportunity when selling brake pads, shoes and calipers.

Market Opportunities Brake pad wear can be indicated by an acoustic wear clip which, once the pad’s friction material wears too low, will catch on the brake disc and create a high pitched squeal. Introduced into the market during the late 1970s/ early 1980s, a significant amount of vehicles will now use an electronic warning system encompassing wear lead indicators. This includes all Minis (2001>), Vauxhall Astras and Citroën C5s (2008>), and is a market which is constantly growing.

Additionally, as the fittings will have been subjected to wear and tear throughout the life of the pad or shoe, they will ultimately have stretched and deformed over this time. For example, tension in the fitting clip is reduced by 50% within just 1-2 years. Consequently, when a brake pad or shoe is replaced, the fittings should also be changed. Failure to do so may mean that the driver will experience brake noise and rattle, uneven wear and possible damage to the brake discs and drums.

The range covers all major modern vehicle applications including topend applications for BMW, Mercedes, Audi, VW and many more. The entire programme has been cross referred to the major players in the market, with identical specs. Thanks to its new partnership with FPS, the Braymann range will be available in January with same-day and next-day delivery.

Pssst!

Braymann fitting kits for pads and shoes include all necessary fitting parts for the application

40 adjusters are available for brake shoes

With plans for expansion, the Braymann braking programme will continue to grow and develop throughout 2014. Watch this space!

Stock up on Screen Wash Spray from salt treated roads during winter will cause a film of dirt to build up on the vehicle’s windscreen. January is therefore one of the best months for screenwash sales, as drivers look for solutions to efficiently clean their screens and clear their view.

Gas Strut Range Extension Blue Print has recently expanded its gas strut range to include over 165 references, covering 550 popular UK applications such as:

• F ord Fiesta (96-02) – part no. ADM55804 • N issan Micra (93-02) – part no. ADN15806 • T oyota Yaris (05-11) – part no. ADT35803 Present in boot lids, glass openings and some bonnets, gas struts are amongst some of the most highly stressed components on a vehicle, often experiencing daily, repetitive use. Over time they lose their effectiveness, meaning they are not able to hold the boot or bonnet fully open, finally resulting in total failure. Polyguard’s screenwash cleans and protects in extreme weather conditions, down to -20°C. Available in 500ml, 1L, 2L, 5L and 25L concentrated, Polyguard screenwash is available next-day from FPS.

The Little Green Man’s European Cousin Created in 1961 by traffic psychologist, Karl Peglau, the Ampelmännchen – German for “traffic light figure” – was originally used at crossings in Communist East Germany. After reunification, he eventually spread to cities in the former West Germany. As motorists, we spend many of our journeys stopping and starting at traffic lights. And as pedestrians I’m sure you have often been at a pedestrian crossing and pressed the button waiting to cross. But does the button, often referred to in New York as the ‘placebo button’, actually work? A study from the BBC* recently showed that at particular, busy junctions it doesn’t make a difference if you press the button or not – the traffic and pedestrian lights change and alternate on a timer regardless. For example, in Manchester, around 40% of the push buttons don’t need to be pressed during busy pedestrian times, with the maximum wait time being 60 seconds.

While the UK doesn’t currently have any plans to change the traffic light imagery, according to Jacobs University in Bremen, a stocky green man in a hat is more noticeable to pedestrians than a thinner figure.*

Steer your sales When it comes to steering and suspension replacements have you got an offering that fulfils customer demand? Here VITAL NEWS unveils FPS’ planned extension of its steering and suspension programme, which has parts to suit varying market needs. Many motorists drive without even noticing steering and suspension faults, so these problems are not picked up until the MOT test when the parts cause the vehicle to fail. Consequently, steering and suspension faults account for over 15% of testing failures, with suspension failures rated as the third highest sector in the MOT test*, falling only behind lighting/signalling and braking. With this in mind, steering and suspension is one of the biggest distress sectors in the aftermarket and has a long grey tail. Motor factors therefore do not tend to stock these ranges, relying on distress services instead. With its same-day and next-day delivery service, FPS offers the support needed to satisfy motor factors’ steering and suspension distress requirements. Not only that, but with the forthcoming extension of its steering and suspension programme, FPS will be able to provide you with more product choice when it comes to the steering and suspension market.

The FPS way In recognising a need in the market for more choice, FPS has developed a three tiered steering and suspension offering to satisfy varying needs. Without compromising on quality, the programme will be built up of an entirely new, competitive range from Fahren, from first quarter 2014 to complement parts already available from key strategic suppliers, First Line and Lemförder. Through this extended programme, motor factors have access to a variety of products, giving them the tools to provide their garage customers with market solutions, whether they insist on OE quality or are looking for a more competitively priced option.

Broaden your offering. Increase your sales. The vast majority of FPS’ steering and suspension programme is supplied by First Line, whose offering comprises of over 6,700 part

numbers. This comprehensive range includes the popular suspension arms, tie rod ends, ball joints and stabiliser links, as well as suspension kits and a variety of bushes and mountings. Designed and manufactured to premium quality standards, optimum performance and safety is guaranteed A suspension arm bush from First Line with every part. With a commitment to a first to market policy for new product introductions, the steering and suspension range from First Line will continue to grow and adapt to the market needs. For those who require an OE branded option, also available from FPS are specific parts for premium German applications from Lemförder. These references reflect those used at OE level, guaranteeing premium quality performance, and cover product areas such as suspension arms, tie rod arms, ball joints, stabiliser links and top strut mounts.

Lemförder’s premium range includes ball joints

At the other end of the spectrum is the new steering and suspension range from Fahren. This offering will be available soon from FPS and

provides another option for those more price conscious customers. Consisting of over 400 parts, the range will offer a cost-effective repair solution without compromising on safety or quality. The fast moving range will include products from suspension arms and tie rod ends to ball joints and stabiliser links, and is manufactured to meet the market requirements for popular UK applications. As with all Fahren products, its steering and suspension range will also be covered by a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty, whichever comes first.

Steering & Suspension range explained All steering and suspension components must work together within tight tolerances to precisely maintain correct steering and suspension geometry, and they are all subject to close inspection during the MOT test.

Don’t miss out on this upsell opportunity! Inform mechanics that time can be saved by replacing a complete suspension arm rather than driving out worn bushes and pressing in new replacements. Not only does this improve workshop throughput, it also maintains the credibility of the garage by reducing labour costs for the customer. Additionally, recommending replacement of chassis components in axle pairs is advisable; it not only benefits vehicle stability and safety but also prevents the need for the customer to return within a short time to have the same work done on the other side of the vehicle.

The following products are popular and vital parts of the system and are available across all three ranges:

Suspension arms These safety critical items effectively locate the vehicle’s axle in conjunction with the shock absorber or suspension strut.

Ball joints Fitted at the outer ends of each control arm, ball joints allow components to pivot, facilitating suspension movement and making the axle steerable. Excessive wear of the ball joint can increase tyre wear.

Fahren’s Steering & Suspension range will be covered by a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty

Multiple needs. One source. Stabiliser links Connect each side of the axle with the stabiliser bar, enabling the latter to act as a torsion beam to reduce body lean in corners. Stabiliser links improve the ride/shock absorption feeling in the vehicle’s handling.

Tie rod ends Located between the steering rack axial joint and the wheel hub, tie rod ends connect the steering mechanisms and provide the adjustability needed to achieve correct wheel alignment.

The True Cost of a Spill The financial fine for an environmental spill can just be the tip of the iceberg. Ecospill explains the importance of spill management in the workplace. With responsibilities towards pollution control increasing, employers are required to consider the solutions needed to meet these environmental obligations. This includes the safe management of oil and chemical spillages, which if ignored can result in a criminal offence and a high monetary fine. Consequently, spill kits must be placed on site in order to comply with the Pollution Prevention Guidelines (PPGs) and Oil Storage Regulations as set out by the Environment Agency, providing good practice towards employee health and safety. These guidelines ensure that companies manage their environmental responsibilities and comply with the law.

Range overview In order to help your garage customers meet these legal requirements, the Ecospill range of spill management products is now available through FPS. The product range features market leading and technologically advanced absorbents and spill kits. Not only is it suitable for sell-on, it is also the perfect solution to help your workplace meet the same legislations.

Specially designed for outdoor use, oil absorbents can be used to absorb any oil or fuel based contaminants. They extract oil and fuel from any water source so are excellent for use in uncertain weather conditions. On the other hand, maintenance absorbents are suitable for indoor use and absorb oil, coolant, anti-freeze and water-based spills, making them very useful for workshops. Both absorbent types are fast acting, highly absorbent and available in sheets, pads, rolls, socks, pillows, booms and drum tops. Absorbent pads come in packs of 25, 50 or 100, with 100 oil-only pads able to absorb 80 litres of oil.

Spill kits Ecospill kits feature everything needed to contain and recover a spill including instructions and guidance on disposal. Oil-only, maintenance and chemical types are available, with environmentally friendly, sustainable fibre absorbents as an option. Kits range from portable versions (ideal for having on-board delivery vehicles) to larger wheeled and static plastic bin varieties (perfect for workshop or factory floor locations).

Both Oil-only & Maintenance Absorbent Pads are available

Absorbents Absorbents are available in high performance polypropylene and also in environmentally friendly recycled and natural fibre options. Absorbents are now the preferred way of containing and recovering a spill. In a comparison with granules, absorbents are much lighter, quicker to absorb, more cost effective to purchase, and less costly to dispose of.

15L Maintenance Spill Kit

While maintenance and oil-only kits are suitable for hydrophobic spills, chemical absorbent kits are critical for chemical or toxic spills which require tough inert absorbents. Chemical spills can be extremely hazardous and should not be cleaned up without the correct training and protective equipment. FPS supplies a comprehensive range of spill control solutions for almost any fluid, including oil, maintenance and chemical spills. All products are on the F:Drive and available for next-day delivery.

CRACK ON AND REPLACE VITAL NEWS speaks to Summit about its range of OE style mirror glass replacements. The vehicle’s mirror glass is vital for driver safety, ensuring that they have a clear view of the road around them. Consequently, if the mirror glass is broken, this could lead to an automatic MOT failure. In fact, failures noted under the ‘Driver’s view of the Road’ are within the top 5 reasons for MOT vehicle failure, proving to be a profitable sector in the aftermarket. Furthermore, with vehicles staying on the road for longer, motorists are now looking for long term, effective solutions.

Original Equipment style replacement mirror glass

The Summit Range To fulfil this demand, Summit has invested in the development of mirror glass with a backing plate, which is a direct replacement of the original glass. Instead of sticking a piece of glass over the existing broken mirror glass, Summit’s range allows you to simply remove the old mirror glass and click in the new OE style replacement. In addition to ensuring a premium finish, it also proves to be a more cost effective alternative to a full mirror unit replacement and is therefore a more desirable solution for the end-user.

Since Summit’s replacement mirror glass range replicates the OE profile, all glass comes with an OE-style backing plate and heating element where applicable. Anti-dazzle heated backing plate glass is also available if the vehicle was originally fitted with this feature.

Summit’s backing plate glass allows easy, click-in fitment

The Summit range of mirror glass with backing plates allows quick and easy fitment, without the need for tools. With full, detailed fitting instructions and diagrams included in each box, this is a hassle-free solution for garages which minimises queries at factor level.

Market Opportunity With drivers investing to keep their vehicles on the road, a new market has emerged demanding long term solutions. Consequently, a big growth sector in replacement mirror glass is plastic backed and heated, proving to be an excellent opportunity for motor factors. To help motor factors maximise on this profitable opportunity, Summit has invested in new part numbers and stock to create the biggest application list in the UK – in 2013 70 new to range references were added, covering some of the latest applications in the vehicle parc. With commitment to continuous range development, Summit aims to be first to market when it comes to mirror glass replacement.

Heated backing plate allows original specifications to be maintained

With a small investment and support from FPS, you can turn a large profit with very little effort. Summit mirror glass is listed on MAM and the FPS F:Drive; look on the CCA page or visit the Parts page to search by vehicle.

One Kit, One Solution As trusted OE belt specialists, Gates explains the benefits experienced across the supply chain when the water pump is replaced at the same time as the timing belt. The Gates PowerGrip® Kit Plus Water Pump includes all necessary components

To avoid engine failure, changing the timing belt on the Synchronous Belt Drive System (SBDS) is a common preventative measure, usually prompted by vehicle manufacturers’ suggested replacement intervals. But many motor factors are missing an upsell opportunity when their garage customers come to them with timing belt requirements. When the timing belt is changed, Gates recommends that the belt-driven water pump is also replaced in order to ensure maximum system performance. If ignored, premature belt wear is likely and it is not guaranteed that the water pump will last the entire life cycle of the new belt.

Scenario 1

Parts fitted: Timing belt kit only Although the job is complete, the chances of premature belt failure remain because the previous water pump is still in place. Additionally, the water pump may not last the full duty cycle of the new belt.

Verdict: If a failure occurs at a later date, the garage is putting its reputation at risk. Scenario 2

Parts fitted: Timing belt kit and separate water pump The Gates PowerGrip® Kit Plus Water Pump offers an OE solution for a complete system overhaul in one box, including an application specific water pump.

Water pump wear is not always visible Water pumps are often perceived as the simplest and most reliable components inside the SBDS. Although the water pump appears to be in good condition, there are a number of adverse influences that can affect their performance. These include:

• Airlocks in the system These can occur during installation, causing noise and/or leaks to be experienced. • Sealant in the coolant If a gasket is supplied with the water pump, no other form of sealant should be used. Coolant contamination is a common cause of damage that can lead to water pump failure. • General wear and tear May be difficult to detect but is experienced by all system components so should not be ignored. The following scenarios show the potential outcomes when three garages take different approaches to an SBDS problem on a Peugeot 106. In all instances, it is assumed that installation is carried out according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

vital news issue 33

A complete system overhaul increases SBDS performance.

Verdict: Satisfactory, but if a problem develops later and there is a warranty issue, dealing with multiple component suppliers can make the process lengthy for the motor factor, garage and end-user. Scenario 3

Parts fitted: Gates Timing belt kit plus water pump A complete system overhaul guarantees optimum SBDS performance.

Verdict: Ideal solution, as all parts have been engineered to work perfectly together. Additionally, although chances have been minimised, if a problem does develop at a later date, only one inspection from Gates and one claim is needed to satisfy any warranty issues. Awareness is key Whilst garages are responsible for their own workshop policies, it is within motor factors’ best interests to raise awareness of Gates PowerGrip® Kits Plus Water Pumps as a solution that makes workshop sense – it is an upsell opportunity, there are fewer buying decisions to make, the parts are always compatible and a single warranty covers the whole job. To help you communicate these benefits, personalised eFlyers and SBDS display stands will be available to stockists through FPS. Speak to your local Sales Representative for further details.
