WELCOME

INSIDE THIS ISSUE…

Note from the MD DEAR CUSTOMER,

Welcome to the latest issue of Vital News. In this issue we are celebrating the past, present and future of the automotive industry at FPS. In celebration of our 80th anniversary, we have “rolled back the years” on products and technologies, to see how much they’ve developed since “Ferraris” began back in 1934. As a youngster in my forties (this is the last edition I will get away with that one!) and with only 18 years in the aftermarket, I may not remember as far back as some (no names!) but I still enjoy listening to those reminiscing. You too may remember trafficators, hub caps, contact sets and wing mirrors; or perhaps, LB 67 and 68 shoes for the Morris Minor (or was that a later model needing LB132?); the GDB528 pads for your Triumph Herald and the H2SA69 Payen gasket for your BMC ‘A’ Series engine, and all that went with them. And we’ve come a long way since then. Over the past few years, rapid changes in technology, have seen increasingly sophisticated electronic systems making everything – not least the automotive industry – a lot more complex. As confidence picks up for the year ahead, there is news that garage owners are planning to invest in more training courses. Gates’ Technical Training Workshops have resulted in a significant sales increase for both factors and garages alike; allowing technicians to take on more and more complicated tasks. Along with apprenticeships, furthering skillsets is vital in this evolving market if we are to keep pace.

Reacting to the developing and future needs of the industry is very important to FPS. Due to the increasingly stringent emissions standards, FPS introduced a range of exhaust temperature sensors and will soon be supplying exhaust gas pressure sensors (both from Cambiare) to meet the increase in demands. We were one of the first suppliers to the aftermarket with exhaust temperature sensors and have added a range of exhaust pressure sensors (both supplied by Cambiare), to meet demands as emissions standards become even more stringent. We have also seized opportunities for expansion and development within the company. A new, short range of QRS belts has been launched, to support our market leading Gates programme. FPS is committed to development and is in constant review of what we can offer to make your business run smoothly now and in the years to come. On that note, FPS hopes that the next 80 years are as successful as the last. We will continue to explore how best to serve our customers and hope that the future brings as many good changes to the aftermarket for us all. Anything we can help you with, please do let us know. FPS CELEBRATES 80 YEARS IN BUSINESS This year we celebrate our 80th anniversary, a significant milestone in any business and something we are certainly proud of. The FPS story began back in 1934, with one man and an idea… HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

As a business we continue to build solid partnerships with our suppliers and customers alike. We have many long standing supplier relationships that have grown over the decades; Federal Mogul, Gates, Remy and First Line to name a few. Likewise many of our customers we have grown up with, and it’s great to work with industry names we have known for so many years.

Italian born, Alfredo Ferraris started the business in 1934 making and selling pistons in the London area. The business has grown from those modest beginnings to a team of over 1,000 employees in 2014, creating one of the largest national distributors of parts in the UK aftermarket. We are a network of 20 branches along with a National Distribution Centre based in Sheffield and two bulk warehouses.

MOVING FORWARD Our business is unmistakeable in the market, with a fleet of 300 peppermint green vans on the road, all personally named by our workforce. At the start of this year we invested in team work wear to further reflect our well-known profile.

The original company name was Ferraris Piston Service, although this has been shortened to FPS for a number of years as the product portfolio is rather different these days. Despite this, old habits die hard and many customers (and even some of the team here!) still refer to the business as “Ferraris”.

2014 brings many new opportunities for us and equally for our customers and suppliers. Continued investment into improved service, more brands and wider ranges, continue to bring development opportunities for all of us. Expansion into some of our expanded product areas such as consumables and leisure have allowed us to utilise our supply chain expertise in a wider context, but our heart will always remain in the automotive aftermarket.

We are very proud of our heritage which has become the foundation of a thriving business.

BUSINESS VALUES AND RELATIONSHIPS The business has been built on service excellence and this now precedes its well established name in the aftermarket. The values we work to are service, reliability, integrity, partnership and progression. Looking back at our old advertising and product brochures, it is clear how different the industry is now, with vast amounts of products required to meet today’s automotive demands and technological advancements. Despite these changes working to these values remains as important now as it ever was.

BELTING THE MARKET VITAL NEWS speaks with QRS about the v-belt and multi-ribbed v-belt market. Competitively priced v-belts and multi-ribbed v-belts from QRS meet the growing market demand for quality products without premium price tags. The entry-level range increases customer choice, catering for both modern, compact engines and older engine systems.

V-BELTS Despite the propensity towards multiribbed v-belts in engine design, there remains a huge selling opportunity for v-belts. With the top ten references, supplying 1.4 million vehicles across 2,200 applications in the UK car parc, supplying v-belts is a business opportunity often overlooked. Vehicles including the Mitsubishi Challenger 2.5 TDiC (98-09), Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 (93-00) and Nissan Shogun (00>), all use v-belts to drive low-ouput alternators and water pumps. The Ford Transit 12.50 1.5 8V (58-65) also uses v-belts. This particular model was one of the first of its kind to be fitted with an alternator; replacing the less reliable and less efficient dynamo.

MULTI-RIBBED V-BELTS The demands being placed on the Accessory Belt Drive System (ABDS) are becoming increasingly complex. More accessories require more power distribution and designs have developed to just one long belt powering all or most of these parts in unison. QRS’ multi-ribbed v-belts have been manufactured to optimise the contact area with the pulleys for efficient power transfer via the multi-v grooves. The use of high-quality rubber is essential to withstand the high-temperatures generated by modern engines and also gives the flexibility and durability required to prevent slipping, cracking and eroding as it drives the pulleys.

NEW TO FPS

The range covers over 80% of the UK car parc, including the popular Peugeot 307 1.4/1.6 (01-09), Volkswagen Golf 1.6/1.8/2.0/1.9D (97-09) and Ford Transit 350 2.4D (00>).

RELIABILITY Extensive testing guarantees optimum performance so garages can be confident that the product they receive will drive increasingly complex accessory systems and older, simpler ones too. Both belt designs by QRS are manufactured with flexible and durable rubber to prevent slipping, cracking and eroding.

FITMENT ADVICE To avoid costly engine damage and potentially dangerous driving situations, the ABDS should be inspected whenever vehicles are serviced, and replaced at the first signs of wear. If the ABDS fails, power can be lost to safety critical systems including power steering which can lead to unsafe driving conditions.

AFTERCARE QRS’ technical assistance and warranty scheme give an added extra to the emerging brand. The premium aftercare service includes a hotline, where a team of dedicated advisors are on hand to answer fitting and warranty questions. Call 0844 980 0089 (Mon – Fri), or email technical@qrsauto.co.uk All QRS products are covered by a 2 year/ 20,000 mile warranty – whichever comes first.

DRIVE BELTS POWERING THE FIRST AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS WORE OUT QUICKLY. THE SYSTEM COULDN’T COPE WITH “WEATHER CONDITIONERS” (AS THEY WERE KNOWN IN 1939) WHICH RAN WHEN THE ENGINE RAN, DEMANDING TOO MUCH FROM THE INITIAL BELT DESIGN.

REDUCING YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT Klarius explains why we must all take note of the DPF MOT change.

As of February 2014, the MOT test for diesel cars tightened up to ensure that a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is still in place on vehicles originally fitted with them at the time of manufacture. DPFs have become standard fitment in recent years, making diesel cars much cleaner in order to meet the increasingly stringent Euro emissions standards. DPFs reduce harmful emissions by capturing soot from exhaust gasses which are then burned away in a controlled manner. If part of this system fails, the filter can quickly become blocked due to a lack of ‘regeneration’ which leads to failure, replacement and often a very costly repair job for the customer.

80

It is important to use high-quality DPFs, as poorly designed filters can cause a decrease in fuel economy, a complete loss of power and can produce a high-level of harmful pollutants. Quality is crucial to the effective operation of both the part and the exhaust system as a whole.

In order to avoid the high cost of replacing a DPF, many owners have chosen the increasingly popular solution of ‘DPF Deletes’. In this scenario, the risk of blockages is eliminated, as filters are completely removed along with some re-programming of the ECU. ‘Deletes’ are typically half the cost of a new DPF and can in some cases slightly improve fuel economy & performance. The downside however, is that the vehicle is much more polluting (not meeting EU standards) and will now fail the MOT.

KLARIUS DPFs Klarius has developed two ranges of DPFs with long-lasting efficiency: the Standard DPF range – with competitive pricing – and a Type

Klarius offers the biggest type approved range in the aftermarket, covering all popular applications. Taking great care during the designing, manufacturing and testing processes, Klarius ensures all products are OEM interchangeable and equivalent in performance and fitment, whilst keeping costs at an aftermarket level. They offer the most active new-to-range programme, with high quality components and invest heavily in research and development to provide their customers with a premium quality DPF range. In previous years, the MOT test only required DPF-equipped vehicles to pass the old ‘smoke’ test, which even a non-DPF vehicle should pass. Under new rules the vehicle will automatically fail the test if the filter is found to have been removed. So there will be instant demand for these parts. The MOT change brings with it a great opportunity to increase DPF sales in 2014, as those who have already removed their filters will need one fitting before their next MOT.

CLEARING THE WAY

COMING SOON!

Cambiare explains to VITAL NEWS the importance of exhaust sensors for DPF regeneration. As strides towards a more environmentally-friendly automotive industry are getting larger, Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) removal has now been made illegal. One reason for their removal was down to blockages and inefficient filter regenerations. Cambiare’s range of sensors rectifies this problem. Cambiare is launching a range of Exhaust Temperature Sensors (ETSs) and Exhaust Gas Pressure Sensors (EGPSs) – the former being a totally new product on the aftermarket. The combined data from the air mass sensor and the ETS prompt the ECU to regenerate the DPF to prevent and clear blockages, as well as monitoring temperature and pressure levels.

The range will consist of approximately 150 parts which cover a wide range of applications, including the Saab 9-3 Estate 1.9 TTiD (01-11), Audi A6 Avant 3.0TDi (2011>) and Vauxhall Astra 2.0 CDTi (2011>).

EXHAUST GAS PRESSURE SENSOR (EGPS) Cambiare’s EGPS transmits differential measurements taken before and after the DPF, to the ECU. When these pressures exceed set levels, filter regeneration will automatically occur, or a light on the dashboard will alert the driver that a garage visit is needed.

DPFs are now a legal requirement for vehicles originally manufactured with one, as they prevent diesel particulate matter and soot from polluting the atmosphere. Once the filter is saturated with particles, the engine runs a programme, known as “filter regeneration”, to burn off pollutants by elevating exhaust temperatures to produce high amounts of NOx to oxidise accumulated ash.

Exhaust gas pressure sensors need to operate in critical assembly conditions and as such undergo rigorous testing as part of the manufacturing process. Tests include reactions to extreme environmental conditions, vibrations, humidity and over-pressure.

Quality is important when selecting sensors, as a malfunctioning sensor can cause unnecessary filter regenerations, power losses, reduced filter lifespan and an increase in pollution levels.

The product range will continue to evolve; with the initial range covering key applications, such as the BMW 3 Series 2.0 (2012>), Audi A5 2.0 TDi (2012>) and Mercedes-Benz SLK 2.1 (2012>).

FILTER REGENERATION

EXHAUST TEMPERATURE SENSOR (ETS) Thin film platinum sensors are proven technology used to meet worldwide emissions standards. The sensing element works on a positive temperature coefficient, so if the exhaust temperature increases, the sensor’s resistance also increases. Typically an ETS measures exhaust temperatures up to 900°C. As intense heat is created during combustion, Cambiare’s sensors are made from metals that can withstand high temperatures. They meet or exceed Cambiare exhaust gas temperature sensors all OEM specifications, providing the highest level of accuracy and reliability in extreme conditions.

SALES OPPORTUNITIES It is recommended that exhaust sensors are replaced when DPFs are replaced, as sensor failure can result in saturation levels increasing far beyond recommended levels which can have a detrimental effect on the whole engine. Exhaust temperature sensors are especially prone to damage during exhaust replacements and it is therefore also advised to replace them simultaneously with a DPF and/or exhaust, rather than waiting for the dashboard warning light to flash. Customers can be confident that Cambiare’s exhaust sensors regulate the DPF regeneration process and therefore the vehicle’s engine and pollution levels. With the increased demand in DPFs, sales of exhaust sensors should also rise in the near future. For more information, please contact your Cambiare or FPS Representative, or visit the F:Drive.

WIND DOWN FOR SUMMER When it comes to power windows, repair jobs don’t always mean a complete system overhaul. Electric-Life speaks to VITAL NEWS about the possibility of changing motors and regulators. During spring, there is an influx of window regulator repair jobs. As usage increases during the warmer months, the detrimental effect of winter temperatures is often discovered. The breakdown of mechanical parts is a common fault at this time of year due to a number of reasons. Historically, due to the sturdiness and rigidity of wind-down windows, the mechanical elements would often outlive the motor. Modern systems however, tend to use lighter materials – such as plastic – and now the opposite is said to be true. Temperature variations, engine vibrations and general wear are causing mechanisms to fail. Misuse of window systems is another culprit for system failure. Slamming doors with open windows rattles the mechanism; whilst attempts to clear frost and ice by simply lowering windows can cause the system to stick, which in turn adds excess pressure on to the mechanism and motor. Quick repairs are often needed and require instant availability and distribution of parts. With sole distribution, motor factors can rely on FPS. After a successful first year stocking regulator parts from Electric-Life, a major investment has been made in branch availability. With same-day and next-day delivery available from FPS, repairs can be completed as efficiently as possible.

PARTS IN THE SYSTEM As the mechanism is more vulnerable than the motor, in most cases the original motor will still be in full working order and will not need replacing when a repair is carried out. Electric-Life makes it possible to buy the component parts of the window system, ensuring that motors are not unnecessarily replaced – an opportunity often denied by car manufacturers.

TAKE A BREAK

WITH

clutch & brake technology

Thank you to NAP who is sponsoring this issue’s Take a Break. NAP’s offering includes over 1,200 brake discs, 140 brake drums, 49 concentric slave cylinders, 898 clutch kits and 37 single mass flywheel kits. NAP braking and clutch products match OE specifications and cover 95% of the UK car parc. In the 1930s, the motor car was taking off in a big and dangerous way. The amount of driving-related fatalities saw the House of Commons stormed by angry unionists who were fighting for the rights of pedestrians. Drivers on the other hand, were fighting against speed limits – claiming they were a violation of ‘an Englishman’s freedom of the highway’. The Transport Minister, Mr. Hore-Belisha, passionately supported the protection of pedestrians. One day whilst out walking in London, he Lord Hore-Belisha (1893-1957), was (almost inventor of the Belisha Beacon and champion of road safety ironically) involved in a near-fatal car accident whilst at a pedestrian crossing. As a result, he implemented flashing amber lights (aka the

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 34

Belisha-Beacon) at black and white zebra markings to improve visibility. Hore-Belisha also lobbied for a 30mph speed limit in built-up areas. An earlier attempt at a 20mph speed limit had been axed due to drivers’ disregard and the unmanageable court orders that had piled up as a result. Debates on the definition of what constituted a ‘built-up’ area battled around Parliament until it was settled as an area lit by streetlights. In this same year, Hore-Belisha introduced the compulsory driving license for new drivers. Wealthy 17 year olds could no longer just jump behind the wheel of a private car without knowing how to use it in the first place.

The 1930 Road Traffic Act (which stripped out the 20mph speed limit) also made thirdparty insurance compulsory, it introduced the Highway Code and instigated the use of ‘traffic control robots’, such as roundabouts, street signs and traffic lights. Despite the Great Depression and impending wars of this era, the motor car managed to boom and road laws were put in place which are still used today.

NAP TOP TIP Within the brake disc range, there are a number of parts on offer that have ABS rings and pre-installed bearings, making it faster and easier to change the complete disc assembly rather than separate components.

IMI APPRENTICESHIPS VITAL NEWS talks to IMI on the importance of encouraging garages to invest for your future. With the increasing complexity of modern vehicles, the tasks technicians and mechanics have ahead will also increase in complexity. In three years’ time, today’s new vehicles will be fixed by your customers and with the increasing sales of new vehicles; there will be a lot of work to do. If garages don’t embrace the rapid advancement of new technology, the possibility to maintain and repair new vehicles will suffer. In order to satisfy the ever-increasing demand of modern motorists, new training schemes and technical workshops are becoming vital. Apprenticeships are often overlooked by garages when nowadays they are needed more than ever. To help your customers stay in business, acknowledging the importance of apprenticeships is crucial. Red tape, along with the amount of time spent in training and the uncertainty of the financial year, can make them seem like an unattractive investment. Research undertaken by the Institute of the Motor’s Industry (IMI), however indicates that apprenticeships should definitely be considered. The IMI say that when asking whether taking on an apprentice is a good thing for your business, the answer is an emphatic “yes”.

FINANCIAL RESULTS Overwhelmingly, the independently-verified results show that there is a financial return to the business offering the apprenticeship. S-CURVE 1 NET INCOME PER QUARTER

The graph reveals how for a micro business, the small financial cost which continues into the first quarter of the second year, is completely recovered before the second year is out. Other benefits include:

• Typically generating on average 300% in 3 years • Profit often received within 18-24 months • Offering up-to-date knowledge on the latest technologies and complex repair/maintenance work • Fully-qualified technicians improve in productivity by 10%-25% ENCOURAGING THE RIGHT PERSON Through encouraging staff, garages will ultimately have better and more productive technicians, which can offer a more satisfying service and an improved customer experience. Knowing about the latest technology ultimately opens up more work opportunities.

THE IMI RESEARCH The IMI secured funding from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) to conduct the study on the Return On Investment (ROI) of apprentices. The research was conducted using a cross section of businesses (from micro-independent garages to franchise dealers), across the whole of the UK. Productivity data was received from 30 apprentices over a two year period.*

WHAT YOU CAN DO Today’s apprentices are your future customers. So help break the myth of apprenticeships and encourage garages to take on and train eager, new technicians.

* The study did not factor in any additional funding that a business may receive but did take into consideration: the costs of recruitment, national minimum wage for 16-19 year olds, daily expense allowances, as well as administration and mandatory health and safety training. With all this considered, the results proved the merits of apprenticeships to the overall business outweighed the initial costs.

HAVE YOU TRAINED AND GAINED YET? VITAL NEWS reviews the ABDS training workshops 6 months on, to see how factors and garages have benefited from training. The constant evolution of in-vehicle accessories has further complicated the Auxiliary Belt Drive System (ABDS) and as a result, more knowledge is needed to keep up-to-date with these newer technologies. Factors taking advantage of Gates’ Technical Training Workshops have already reported an increase in kit sales as technicians gain greater confidence and an improved skillset on ABDS-related work. During the early sessions of Gates’ 2014 workshops, questions on the merits of kit installations over part replacements dominated conversations. Understanding how the component parts impact upon the entire system is important to diagnosing and fixing problems. It makes more sense to change all parts at the same time, as they have been subject to the same wear and tear.

TECHNICAL TRAINING Belts are increasingly under more strain as they drive more accessories, and the training workshops are designed to help the installer diagnose causes rather than simply fixing problems as they appear. As confidence and knowledge increases, ultimately so too does the level of service to customers.

The training workshops are subsidised by Gates and FPS, with factors only asked to provide one third of the cost. Out of the 500+ references available, Gates’ most popular kit is the standard Micro-V® Horizon® Kit which includes the belt, idler and tensioner; there are also versions including the Overrunning Alternator Pulley (OAP) and Torsional Vibration Damper (TVD). The technical training workshops will reveal which kit is most appropriate for customers’ needs. Technical Training and Support Team Specialist, Andrew Vaux, points out that the selection process depends upon what the ABDS service sets out to achieve. “At the end of the day, what’s best for the customer is not the price of the job, but what’s most appropriate for the car and the job in hand. The majority of the time, it is more appropriate to change all parts in the system, as this will save the customer time and money in the long run. There are added warranty benefits to performing a complete system overhaul too.”

CASE STUDY: A-Z MOTOR FACTORS Strong demand for the ABDS kits in the Stoke-on-Trent area could well be linked to the degree of technical expertise available over the counter at the Fenton branch of A-Z Motor Factors. Director Mohammed Nadeem explains how important sales prompts are. “If a garage wants an ABDS belt and a tensioner, our sales staff make it clear that there is a range of Gates kits that will include them. They also point out that the kits add value, as well as saving time – and they increase the degree of warranty protection available… After a brief chat about what signs to look for, and maybe a further inspection of the vehicle, we usually find that the decision is to take the kit… [and] once [garages] understand the benefits of installing an ABDS kit, they are more likely to repeat the order next time.”

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS IN A BOTTLE VITAL NEWS gets an insight from Farécla on car paint care at home with their G3 Pro range.

Previously, many car owners relied on professionals to remove surface scratches and paint defects but the current economic climate has encouraged people to consider how they could restore minor defects themselves. As a result, this market sector has expanded and there is now an opportunity for retailers to gain sales from the new category of car paint care; a market currently worth in excess of £31.5million. Scratches and scuffs can be unavoidable and according to a recent survey, public car parks are a major source of these incidents. Since 1994, the average car width has grown by 16% and despite these changes, legal requirements governing car park spaces have stayed exactly the same – even though the average British car is now 2" wider than the minimum space! The result is that over 10 million car owners have suffered unwanted contacts in car parks over the past year, costing over £500million in repair bills. Farécla has developed the high quality G3 Pro range to cater for this significant market opportunity.

G3 PRO RANGE OVERVIEW Bodyshop professionals have been trusting Farécla for over 60 years and their most advanced formulations are now being made available in the G3 Pro range for customers to achieve the same outstanding results at home. The range offers a complete solution, from preparation and paint renovation through to waxing and regular maintenance. From preparation to finish, the G3 Pro range offers professional skills in a bottle.

70

KEY PRODUCTS Permanent removal is the core principle of the G3 Pro brand. Its hero product, the award-winning Permanent Scratch Remover, does not contain fillers to temporarily mask scratches but instead ensures permanent removal via Engineered Diminishing Abrasives (EDa’s). Permanent Scratch Remover is a reliable, quick-to-apply product which removes recent minor defects before more damage is sustained through rust and corrosion. When used in conjunction with the specially engineered Applicator Waffle Pads (AWPs), consumers can effortlessly achieve a glossy, scratch-free shine by hand – without the need for a polishing machine. A new product to the range is the Body Prep Clay Mitt which gives a truly deep clean – the key to obtaining best results on a paint renovation. Substituting clay bars, the mitt provides total control over the deep clean process and even lifts bonded contaminants from the surface. Contact your local FPS Representative to find out how your business can benefit from the G3 Pro range.

DON’T GET RUSTY ON RUST PREVENTION After a long wet winter, rust prevention is more important than ever. POR-15 sits down with VITAL NEWS to discuss tried and tested methods to keep rust at bay. Owners of classic cars know the enormous challenge of rust prevention. With around 68% of historic vehicles valued at less than £10k, they are increasingly accessible to the general public. With an average hobbyist spending around £2,900 each year, this sector is becoming more attractive for motor factors and retailers to invest in. Rust prevention however, is not just a problem for classic car owners. Despite advances, all cars are affected by this epidemic and prevention unites all vehicle owners in the same quest. After the wettest winter on record, Vital News thought it timely to explore the leading rust preventative solutions from the manufacturer POR-15, who has been a market leader in the war against rust, since 1978.

Scientists produced a three* step process, which when followed correctly, stops rust in its tracks and ensures it does not return.

THE 3 STEP SYSTEM

1

STEP1: CLEANER/DEGREASER Cleaner/Degreaser is a single-application, environmentallyfriendly treatment which removes grease, oil and silicones from metal. This process ensures the removal of harmful contaminants which would otherwise negatively impact on the finished project.

2

STEP 2: METAL PREP Having thoroughly cleaned the metal, step two involves the single spray application of Metal Prep. This unique dual purpose solution neutralises rust and etches the surface metal. The result is a zinc phosphate coating which creates the perfect surface anchor for topcoat bonding. Metal Prep is equally effective on smooth or highly polished metals.

3

STEP 3: POR-15 RUST COATING Finally, two coats of the fast drying POR-15 coating will provide a rock hard yet flexible finish to the metal. Due to the very high solids content the finished effect will be a hard ceramic surface with a complete absence of brush marks. Whilst POR-15 also offers a range of quality topcoats, it should be noted that the rust coating is fully compatible with most quality finishing paints.

THE FIGHT AGAINST RUST Rust occurs when moist air comes into contact with metal. Moisture softens ordinary paints over time and when corroded, rust begins to form underneath. Quickly and aggressively rust takes hold of surface steel. POR-15 developed a reliable moisture-cured coating to combat corrosion, to keep air and moisture from reaching base metal.

THE COATING The coating is a unique anhydrous product, made totally without water, and has the reverse chemistry of ordinary paints. POR-15 is actually strengthened by exposure to moisture and dries to form a rock hard, non-porous coating that will survive any hammer or scratch test. The unique coating is further enhanced by its flexibility, meaning metal can expand and contract without ever adversely affecting the performance of the coating. Whether used on a NASA satellite dish, or a fleet of military vehicles, POR-15 will not let the user down.

* For 99% of projects the three step process will provide the ultimate protective barrier. However, should the vehicle be subjected to prolonged UV exposure, there is a range of topcoats suitable for a final layer of protection.

Complementary products from POR-15, such as fillers, engine enamels and fuel tank sealers are also available from FPS. For more information on rust prevention coatings from POR-15, speak to your local FPS Representative today.

SPRING TO LIFE

Kilen stresses to VITAL NEWS the benefits of quality when it comes to spring replacements.

The extremely wet weather which welcomed 2014 will have taken its toll on suspension springs. Fully exposed to the elements, coil springs come into contact with water, stones and grit during everyday use. Without adequate protection, corrosion will cause the springs and suspension system to fail. To supply reliable coil springs – especially with the unpredictable weather we are currently experiencing – it is crucial to select the right materials and the right manufacturing processes.

surface and internal wire quality necessary for modern suspension springs. Each Kilen spring undergoes a chemical process called zinc phosphating, adding a layer of corrosion protection, before painting. Kilen then uses electrostatics to apply a coat of epoxy powder resin paint to each coil spring, which is much more durable than standard paint.

REPLACING IN PAIRS When a spring fails, drivers often request that only the defective spring is replaced. Failure to replace in axle pairs, and the result of an imbalanced ride-height, can however have multiple negative consequences. In addition to higher labour costs there is also the inconvenience of the vehicle being off-the-road on two separate occasions. Other potential consequences of not replacing springs in axle pairs include:

• increased braking distance • decreased vehicle handling • reduced comfort

When it comes to selecting the right supplier, consistently high availability is also a key factor. Last year, Kilen invested in increased production capacity, enhancing their ability to meet any peaks in market demand, and allowing them to react more quickly and maintain availability where competitors could not.

RUST AND CREEP CORROSION The most common cause of spring failure is corrosion, as chips in the exposed layer of lacquer cannot be avoided. Cracks and chips allow water to penetrate, leading to creep corrosion which spreads beneath the paint layer, greatly reducing service life. To help combat rust and prevent creep corrosion, Kilen use only the highest grade steel from selected mills to achieve the exceptional

• increased tyre wear • less responsive steering

It’s best practice to replace springs in axle pairs

Springs typically degrade at a similar rate across an axle (with normal usage). If one spring breaks, it’s fair to assume the other won’t be far behind. Replacing in pairs not only ensures customer safety and satisfaction, it is also a great upselling opportunity.

WARRANTY Kilen springs are covered by a 3-year warranty and are certified to match or exceed OE quality, allowing fitment without warranty restrictions.

FROM THE 1930s, COIL SPRINGS BECAME MORE PREVALENT IN FRONT SUSPENSION ON INDIVIDUAL WHEELS, TAKING OVER FROM THE POPULAR LEAF SPRING DESIGN.

A NOTE FROM GRAHAM KNIGHT...

IAAF President, Graham Knight, sums up his first year in his new role as President in this open letter. To the Aftermarket, The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) is our industry’s protector & guardian and since becoming the President, time has flown by and I’ve had a very full and busy year. In my first Vital News letter I illustrated why companies & groups should support the only independent organisation dedicated to protecting them. In order to continue earning profit from our industry, aftermarket injustices must be fought and the IAAF fights on behalf of all of us. In this edition, I thought I would give you an insight into some of the activities I’ve been responsible for over the past 12 months. The single most important task I was faced with was finding a replacement CEO for Brian Spratt, who after 21 years retires in June. Those familiar with Brian will appreciate how this was never going to be an easy task. Whilst I’m pleased for Brian to be able to retire and follow his numerous pursuits, I shall be sad not to have his guiding hand and good counsel at our disposal. Brian helped craft a wonderful heritage for the IAAF and will be missed. From a strong shortlist of contenders, I recently announced the good news that Wendy Williamson has been appointed to take on this position and despite her youthful looks, she has built up a vast and impressive amount of experience within the industry. I’m looking forward to working closely with Wendy and seeing what the future holds. Another activity we’ve been tackling is European policy. It’s a never-ending battle, fighting against VMs pressurising European policy makers to legislate us out of business. We’ve made (and are continuing to make) the authorities aware of contraventions to the Block Exemption Regulations: Basically VMs are not releasing essential data and making it impossible for your garage customers to carry out some repairs – No repairs, no business for us all! The frequency of MoT testing has come up again too. You may recall a few years ago when the EU attempted to change the frequency? Fortunately – through a collected effort – we made our government see sense and our UK ‘safety first’ approach ‘won the day’. That is until the EU Periodic Technical Inspections came along – the MoT under a not-so-easy-to-say heading! We managed to see this one off too and had the directive amended. A minimum EU standard was created from what would otherwise have been an EU-wide, enforceable law. There actually isn’t enough room for me to list everything, but if you’re interested just drop me a line and I can send you the whole nine yards. To all who have shown me support in my role over the past year – a big thank-you. Please support the IAAF in its vital work, either independently or, if you’re a member, via your Buying/Trading Group. We need your support to be able to carry on protecting us all. Kind regards,

Graham IAAF President FPS Operations Director (South) E-mail: graham@iaaf.co.uk
