Welcome to the latest issue of Vital News. Despite the lack of winter, it’s pleasing to write this against a backdrop of an improving economy with customers generally reporting improved trading. Let’s hope that political crises such as that in the Ukraine don’t throw us off track. The market is further helped by the number of vehicles on the road reaching half a million in 2013. The average age has gone up from 7.44 to 7.6 years and the increase in the number of vehicles over 10 years old has been particularly strong. FPS recognises how a product portfolio for older vehicles is all the more important and supplies customers with a tiered offering available on many products to meet market demand. Whilst aged vehicles are staying longer on the roads, new vehicles are also increasing in number. This is good news for the aftermarket, as they are refilling the pipeline for future aftermarket demand and bolstering the need for excellence in new-torange and unique/niche parts that are often considered ‘dealer only’. This is another area that FPS is focusing on in order to allow customers to make more sales with access to more obscure parts. You can read more on this new initiative inside.

On average, vehicles lose around 15% of gas per year and before summer it is advised to re-charge in order to ensure a comfortable driving environment. STRETCH YOUR OPPORTUNITIES Gates talks to VITAL NEWS about how Stretch Fit® tools are providing real savings in time and investment for workshops. Innovations in drive system technology mean that some engine layouts are fitted with elastic belts which are able to maintain the correct tension without the need for tensioners. Stretch Fit belts cannot be stretched manually, so in order to identify Stretch Fit technology, ‘SF’ is placed at the end of belt part numbers.

GATES SFT RANGE The total range consists of 7 tools suitable for the entire Stretch Fit belt range.

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

The SFT001 is suitable for up to 70% of vehicle applications on UK roads. It is a universal tool that has a time-saving advantage, as unlike some OE alternatives, the tool fits between the engine and the chassis, so there is no need to lower the engine in order to install the belt on Fiat and PSA engines.

Stretch Fit belts require different installer techniques than the more traditional layouts. Without the correct tools, fitment can even become dangerous, as the stresses and tensions involved when ‘stretching’ the belt for installation can be significant. A range of Stretch Fit Tools (SFT) has been introduced alongside Gates’ Stretch Fit range of belts to ensure safe and proper practice.

The SFT003 – which has been developed from SFT001 – is another universal tool, suited for several Fiats and Fords – catering to a further 5% of UK applications.

INVESTING IN TOOLS The original Stretch Fit belts were often sold complete with ‘disposable’ installation tools. With more Stretch Fit belts appearing on the market year-upon-year however, disposable tools are no longer proving cost-efficient.

The SFT006 is designed for those pulleys which have protruding bolts, or wider gaps between the bolt heads, where one tool is not enough. OE manufacturers use a different tool for each application, whereas Gates SFT006 is able to accommodate certain Mitsubishi applications, and some light commercials from Citroën, Fiat, Ford and Peugeot. USING THE TOOLS The Gates SFT range of re-usable tools has been developed and introduced to help standardise installation practices, whilst also protecting the integrity of the belt and the drive system, which in turn ensures consistent workshop reliability.

Through a series of investigations, Gates found that these throwaway tools were often used more than once (even when damaged), or ignored altogether in favour of ‘make do’ alternatives (such as screwdrivers and tyre levers). In such circumstances, drive system integrity and installer safety is compromised and belts and pulleys are invariably damaged. By investing in reliable and re-usable tools, the quality of the materials is protected, the level of service is enhanced (as mistakes are less likely to be made) and installers can be safer and more efficient in their work. Re-usable tools ensure consistent and reliable performance in less time.

4 DRIVE SYSTEM TECHNOLOGY

Installation generally involves placing a belt in position, securing the tool, then slowly turning the engine – using a ratchet – in the prescribed direction. As the tool begins to stretch the belt, it is guided on to the pulley using the fingers. It can be used on a wide variety of different materials including brass, copper, steel, PVC, fibreglass, glass, ceramics and wood, but is designed specifically for use with steel. Once in place and fully set, it can be sawn, drilled, filled and sanded, creating professional-looking repairs quickly and easily.

HOW THE PUTTY WORKS Steel epoxy putty comes as a two component epoxy resin in one single stick, with the outer layer being the epoxy and the core being

the activator. The cylinder-within-cylinder design keeps the parts from reacting with one another until they are kneaded together and protects the inside core from drying out from air exposure. The design also allows the user to simply cut off as much putty as is required and perfectly measures out the ratio of hardener and epoxy to mix together. The putty cures by chemical reaction initiated by kneading until the epoxy and the activator are thoroughly mixed together to a consistent colour.

Clean, Cut then Knead No special tools or training is required, just cut, knead and apply.

1 Clean all surfaces, ensuring they are free of contamination and debris. 2 Cut the required amount of steel epoxy putty from the stick. 3 Knead until it’s an even, streak-free colour and then apply firmly. TIPS AND TRICKS

• Moisten fingers just before applying the putty to ensure it sticks to the object and not fingers. This also prevents waste. • To prevent the putty from sticking where it is not required, treat surfaces with a silicone gel or release oil. • Keep what’s left over wrapped up and it will remain usable for 3 years. With the increasing demands on fuel efficiency and fuel economy, the fuel system has seen dramatic changes over the last 30 years. Modern engines have turned away from mechanical pumps in favour of electrical in order to increase power and to meet the stringent regulations on emissions. Faulty fuel pumps can cause:

• loss of engine power at high speeds or under heavy loads • loud noise emitted from the pump • ignition problems and failure to start Causes for failure can be down to fuel tank contamination, a blocked fuel filter or a torn/degraded diaphragm.

With fuel systems becoming more modular, there is an increasingly large number of components within one single unit. Therefore, it is crucial that all of these parts work at a high performance level so that the combustion process and engine management system as a whole work optimally from the first installation.

Electrical fuel pumps suffer if the fuel level runs too low as the pump has to work harder to maintain the high pressure that modern injection systems require. Fuel is also needed to cool and lubricate the system and the wear rate can significantly increase when there is not enough fuel available. Electrical pumps must be checked for rust on the connectors as this will affect the signal reaching the pump. Care must be taken to make sure all hoses and pumps are reconnected before turning on the ignition. A damaged fuse will also mean fuel pumps fail to operate.

The ‘Splinter’ was made as a university project by designer Joe Harmon, 27. The car features a 6-speed, manual gearbox and reaches 0-60mph in just 3 seconds. Made from maple, plywood and MDF, the car has a laminated wood veneer chassis, wooden wheel rims and an orange wood suspension system with laminated arms and springs. The vehicle’s light weight comes from its “careful design and composite construction”, where moulded laminates are used rather than carved solid blocks of wood. As Joe explains, “This is a supercar designed to push boundaries and prove the potential of wood as a material.” Joe’s not the first designer to engineer a vehicle out of wood. Back in 1939, UK designers came up with the “Lagonda Rapide Tulipwood Tourer”, which features a 4.5 litre, V12 engine with 225bhp. This car is considered one of the most elegant vehicles of all time.

A HOT TIP FOR BUSINE HELLA speaks to VITAL NEWS about how rising temperatures cause a rise in revenue for bo With a warm start to 2014 and last year’s record summer temperatures still in our minds, air conditioning units in the UK are seeing a massive rise in sales. With almost 90% of new vehicles on the UK roads having air conditioning systems, what was once an optionslist luxury has now become a commonplace convenience. With the UK market for air conditioning repairs estimated at being worth in excess of £102m per annum and demand for air conditioning parts increasing at more than 5% each year, air conditioning service and repair is a growing market with valuable opportunities.

MARKET OPPORTUNITY A 2012 study by Warranty Direct expressed a concern that more than 230,000 motorists experience an air conditioning system failure each year, with an average repair bill of £426. The failures are across the market, from Porsche, to Seat and Volvo. The significant amount of air con’ related warranty claims reveals just how valuable the service and repair business is for these parts. Steve Hudson, Senior Product Manager for HELLA, explains how the spring and summer season brings guaranteed revenue opportunities. “Whatever the weather, each spring the industry sees an increase in A/C repairs from systems that have developed issues, or even seized completely, during the winter. With many motorists trying to avoid using their air conditioning unless absolutely necessary (in an attempt to conserve fuel), they are often unwittingly increasing the risk of costly A/C repairs, as A/C faults can often go undetected for some time.” Not only that but lack of use and moisture build up can also cause problems. It is essential that garages urge customers to offer A/C health checks, so that drivers may avoid bigger problems further down the line.

Reasons for failure can be numerous but motor factors can advise garages on these basic checks to offer customers a boost in their A/C business.

• The A/C system should be checked every year, or every 10,000 miles and serviced every two years. The compressor, evaporator and expansion valve in particular, should be inspected regularly. • Within a year up to 10% of the refrigerant will escape and failure to monitor the refrigerant level can lead to significant damage being caused to the compressor. • A service includes removal of the refrigerant, checking the system for leaks and refilling it with the quantity of refrigerant prescribed by the vehicle manufacturer. • The filter-drier (which removes humidity and dirt particles from the system) and the interior filter (which is instrumental in filtering dust, dirt and pollen) also need to be regularly changed (every two years) as these two components have only a limited absorption capacity.

COMMON PREMATURE FAILURES There are some vehicles which have higher and sometimes premature driveshaft and CV joint failure rates on the OEM product fitting by the VMs. Examples include:

PISTON RING FRICTION Reducing friction from piston rings results in higher efficiency, lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions. It is a difficult balancing act to reduce friction and maintain heat transfer from piston to cylinder bore whilst also maintaining a pressure-tight seal. With metal-to-metal contact, wear will always occur. Coatings are therefore essential in protecting the materials and to reduce wear-rate. DIAMOND-LIKE FORM The coating’s superior properties are achieved by a multi-layer microstructure and a special coating composition that contains carbon, deposited in diamond-like form, as well as hydrogen and tungsten. The unique structure can be produced in coating thickness up to 10 microns, more than three times that of the industry’s latest state-of-the-art DLC (diamond-like carbon) coatings. CarboGlide is Goetze’s third and most advanced generation of DLC coated ring technology. FPS’ NEW RESEARCH FOR UNIQUE AND NICH Being able to provide customers with relevant products and a choice of options is essential. FPS’ new research initiative and how it can benefit your business. In order to offer a more comprehensive portfolio, FPS has developed a new research initiative to unearth one-off, rarely-asked for parts, as well as new and emerging technologies. We have been inviting feedback and actively searching for parts to complement and further extend our ranges. Keeping sales in the independent aftermarket is important for the industry and the aftermarket is able to supply more products than many people perhaps realise.

BACKGROUND Historically, the aftermarket has particularly succeeded with established product groups that have been integral to motor vehicles since the first designs. Wear items, including braking, transmission, steering and suspension parts have been the most popular aftermarket products but as vehicles have become more complex, more parts outside of these are needed.

AREAS OF RESEARCH Key areas that provide potential opportunities include:

EMERGING TECHNOLOGY Emerging technology doesn’t necessarily refer to new product groups per se, but can demonstrate how designs and demands can advance and evolve. Vehicle manufacturers nowadays work to stringent government-led emissions regulations, which generally have a knock-on effect on parts manufacturers. Not only are manufacturers targeted with creating fuel-efficient products but they must also be lightweight while maintaining and improving quality. As engines generate more torque to improve performance, the task becomes even more complicated.

In order to open up the aftermarket business and to create more freedom of choice, ‘Block Exemption’ regulations permit vehicle owners to choose where servicing and repairs are carried out, providing the Independent Sector with additional opportunities. As the market opens up to independent repair work, it also opens up to independent manufacturers. More product groups are currently being manufactured and supplied which ultimately offers more competitive choice.

ONE-STOP-SHOP The research aims to highlight more products that are typically considered ‘dealer only’ parts, as well as giving greater coverage on existing, established product groups. The aim is to provide motor factors with a wider range of products which will benefit the entire aftermarket supply chain. The garage can free up valuable time by not having to multi-source and shop around. Emerging technology can therefore refer to technological changes of existing products whose roles have changed as vehicle demands have evolved. Prime examples are engine and gearbox mounts. Previously these mounts were manufactured as fairly basic blocks of rubber but now they have evolved into highly engineered, complex units which are designed to absorb specific vibrations from specific areas of the engine. They can have a huge impact on the lifetime of surrounding parts which would be negatively affected by undue vibration without the absorption the mounts provide. Examples of products brought in to this area include Cambiare exhaust temperature and pressure sensors. Education, training and technical awareness is fundamental when bringing in new products and FPS considers this as important as availability.

Even the most dedicated and steadfast suppliers will have application gaps in their ranges, due to such things as patents, OEmanufacturing contracts, as well as geographical capabilities and strengths. Providing programmes to deliver the widest application coverage requires a deep understanding of what is already in range, compared to which vehicles are actually on the road. Once gaps are identified, range additions can be developed in conjunction with suppliers, or products can be sourced from alternative providers. There are existing examples of such gap filling throughout FPS’ existing programmes, such as Sachs and Valeo DMFs, Caparo brake hydraulics and HELLA lighting.

The proliferation of brands, vehicle marques, product groups and part numbers mean that it is inevitable that slower moving product groups get lost amongst them. The niche platform is designed to bring such products to the forefront, reminding the market that should they have the need for a rarer/ more obscure/ unknown/ slow-moving product, they are readily available through existing aftermarket channels. It’s not necessarily entire product groups which will be considered but rather individual parts for specific applications and marques. For example, the gear selector linkage for the Vauxhall Combo is a known issue at garage level but it may not be as well-known at factor level.

Application gaps are also relevant as they not only apply to newer vehicles but also retrospectively, in the older elements of the car parc. For example, some product applications that were gaps at the time of launch have remained as gaps as manufacturing focus shifted towards the latest releases. As we move forward the products become more unique and more application-specific and related to failure rate as opposed to car parc coverage - making it more difficult to identify but something that FPS is committed to providing.

The niche platform will therefore be utilised to publicise existing products that happen to be less familiar. As featured in the last edition of Newsdesk, Glow Plug Control Units (GCUs) for makes such as Vauxhall, Astra and Corsa (among others), can be typically hard to source. The back page of Newsdesk, FPS’ monthly publication, will showcase a different niche product in each issue.
