WELCOME

INSIDE THIS ISSUE…

Note from the MD DEAR CUSTOMER,

Welcome to this issue of Vital News, your quarterly update on the latest news from FPS and the wider automotive market. The year seems to have flown by; already it’s time to start thinking about those ranges suitable for winter, to ensure we can meet customer demand as it arises. A number of winter products are covered in this issue and in addition, we are working on improving our branch profiles of relevant products, such as starters and alternators so we hold slower moving stock close at hand to save the need for you to stock that product. We are supporting those branch stocks with strong central stocks as well, to ensure we can keep the supply chain filled and you can say yes to your customer.

Vital News endeavours to bring you the latest product news with fitment advice and quality assurances as well as focus upon good garage practices. As always, we hope to offer you useful industry advice and product information. This edition features articles on steering technology, tools, dehumidification products and power accessories, alongside information on gaskets, filters and ignition coils amongst others. Our research initiative continues to explore and present new technologies, gap-filling products and hard-to-source parts. Do take a look at the Unique & Niche Products section that could offer extra sales opportunities to you.

Our main feature ‘30 ways to warm up your sales’ gives you a comprehensive guide, a ‘pre-winter checklist’ if you like, to the products you need to look out for this coming season.

I hope you find this issue interesting, but even more so relevant to helping you develop your business with our support. Let’s hope for a great winter ahead, one which ushers a good season of business upon all of us, so our 80th anniversary ends on a high note for you too!

Our investment in improving core programmes continues, and we are expanding our ranges of Shaftec CV Joints and Driveshafts further still on the back of how well the initial launch has gone.

As always, we are happy to help you with your queries and welcome any suggestions towards a better service opportunity. Meanwhile, happy reading!

We have also significantly improved our cooling programme in partnership with Nissens, and again, holding a well catalogued, well priced, good quality range is being reflected in being able to meet customer demands far more than with our previous programme.

• 1600 ADDITIONS • 50 DIFFERENT SUPPLIERS

NEW-TO-RANGE LAUNCHED AUGUST 2014 In August, there were over 1600 additions, from 50 different suppliers, including 237 from First Line and 92 from Nissens. Highlights include:

Volvo XC60 2.4 (10/2013>) Gates Micro-V Multi-Ribbed Belt Part No. 3PK628SF

BLUE PRINT WHEEL BEARING SOCKET TOOL Needing a specific tool for particular jobs is becoming more and more common in modern vehicle servicing and repair. Blue Print are identifying these tools and adding them to range. This wheel bearing socket tool is essential for replacing the front wheel bearings (Blue Print part number ADK88223C) on the Suzuki Jimny 1.3i, due to the bearing being held in place with a lock nut which needs this special four pin adaptor to remove it. Unlike ‘tool only’ catalogues, Blue Print clearly lists each tool next to the vehicle and part that it’s intended to be used with, thus informing you that a tool is required and available before the job is started.

• BMW 114d 1.62.1 (08/2013>) BGA Timing Chain Kit Part No. TC0900K

GATES LABOUR CLAIM CHANGE All Gates warranty claims should now be processed via the standard eWarranty system on the F:Drive and the appropriate drop down for labour or non-labour claims can now be selected.

All products are covered by a 3-year warranty. For more information, visit Blue Print LIVE!: www.blue-print.com/bpl

All Gates products are covered by a 2 year/ 60,000 mile warranty. For more information, please visit the warranty module on F:drive.

WAYS TO

UP YO

Your pre-winter checklist from VITAL NEWS. The warm days of summer are over and as autumn has set in, we are reminded of the imminent winter. It is this time of the year, where you will no doubt be planning your winter stock injections in preparation for that cold snap. Weather centres are predicting a cold and snowy winter for 2014/15 meaning an increased demand on the automotive supply chain for quality winter essentials. As you well know by looking back at previous winter weather, you could find yourself playing Russian roulette mild or extreme winters can both leave you exposed. So to avoid the issue of either having excess stock sitting idle in your stores, or no stock available review your policy now and let FPS take that risk. We hold all the stock so you don’t need to and you can get it from us the same /next day. › BATTERIES

› THERMOSTATS

WHY: Lighting, heating and electrics put immense pressure on car batteries, especially in winter. Low temperatures reduce the efficiency of even a fully charged battery by 33%. Battery related faults remain in the top 5 reasons for vehicle breakdowns in winter.

WHY: More than 1 million thermostat failures are detected each year in winter, typically when the heaters fail – now is the time to prepare for the demand on thermostats.

WHAT’s on offer? • The new 2014 GS Batteries Car and Light Van Range features five battery types – Bronze, Silver, and Gold as well as the Japanese size EFB Start Stop and AGM Start Stop Plus Micro Hybrid ranges – all are OEM specification. • Auxiliary and back up batteries that fit such vehicles as Toyota Yaris, Auris & Prius, Lexus CT200h & IS300h, Mercedes E-Class & S-Class, Honda Insight, CRZ, Volvo DRIVe and BMW 7-Series are also available.

WHAT’s on offer? • Gates thermostats guarantee the largest application coverage in the market from just 500 references, since each Gates thermostat is supplied with all required gaskets and seals for a number of applications.

› LIGHTING

WHY: Low light conditions in winter means an additional sales opportunity as dark mornings and dreary evenings come into play. WHAT’s on offer? • The latest technologies in bulbs and lighting from Lucas with adaptive front lighting systems, fog lights, high intensity discharge headlamps, LED and daylight running systems that cover approximately 90% of the UK vehicle parc. It is further complemented by a range of OE lighting units from Hella, Magneti and Valeo.

› ELECTRICALS AND ENGINE MANAGEMENT COMPONENTS

WHY: Connection issues caused by wet and corrosive road conditions in winter lead to a major breakdown in the engine management department. Extra electrical needs of the car in the inclement weather deplete alternator reserves and reduce the availability of excess power to the battery. Glow plugs, owing to either a broken regulating coil or poor ground connection, as well as the ignition system are prone to failures in cold/damp conditions. WHAT’s on offer? • Over 3,800 starters and alternators from Remy that give a higher output through more compact and fuel efficient units. • Over 450 ignition coils and more than 750 lead set references from Cambiare that match OE specification and offer a 2 year/30,000 miles warranty. • The competitively priced Fahren ignition coil range with a 1 year/ 12,000 miles warranty. • Over 160 NGK Glow Plug references and 140 references from Blue Print, ranging from standard metal glow plugs to the more popular ceramic plugs. 4 WINTER PRODUCTS

OUR

THIS › JUMP LEADS

› VISIBILITY ENHANCERS

WHY: Mucky roads and relentless precipitation deteriorate the quality of windscreens. The incessant use of wipers tends to have an adverse effect on both the wiper motors and blades. Safety against mishaps caused by obscured vision encourages end-users to stock up on products that enhance visual clarity. WHAT’s on offer? • Magneti and Valeo, along with Leader, supply an extensive range of Wiper Motors across many applications • Michelin’s conventional Rainforce and hybrid Stealth Wiper Blade range, across various applications and sizes. • Holts De-icer to counter the effects of frost on windscreens and offer protection down to -15°C. • Comma and Polygard Screenwash for windscreens. • Numerous traffic film removers, glass cleaners, ice scrapers and rain repellents.

WHY: A four-fold increase in the sale of jump leads is seen every year during winter. It is wise to encourage garages to persuade end-users to store jump leads in car boots, increasing their goodwill and your sales. WHAT’s on offer? • Maypole’s wide range of jump leads includes the poly-bagged CCA (Copper Coated Aluminium) range, a fully-boxed CCA / copper construction performance range and a nylon-bagged 100% copper Professional range.

› WINTER CAR CARE ESSENTIALS

WHY: The harsh winter climate can damage water pumps and radiators. The slippery roads are also a big threat in terms of road safety. A wide range of products are available to counter these and maintain vehicles. WHAT’s on offer? • A good quality antifreeze, like the Comma Xstream range offers corrosion protection, operates at temperatures as low as -36°C and covers a wide range of applications. • Maypole hydrometers and battery chargers assure a steady sale for motor factors. • Top-Up De-Ionised Water is an exceptional substitute for diminished water in lead-acid batteries. • Husky and Michelin’s variety of snowchains, in high quality steel and composite materials for safe driving on snow covered roads. • Maypole offers snow shovels, snow socks and windscreen and car covers. • Comfortable winter wear and PPE from JSP and Portwest.

› GAS SPRINGS

WHY: Sales opportunities due to gas spring failure are increased due to the exacerbated problems caused by cold temperatures, often resulting in a complete failure of the spring to elevate the boot or bonnet. WHAT’s on offer? • Kilen gas springs are manufactured to OE specifications and supplied with fitting kits for ease of installation, while offering 1,100 different parts in range for a variety of European and Asian applications.

With our leading delivery service, your stocks can be replenished same-day or next-day, making FPS your one port of call in winter! CAMBIARE DECODES COIL COMPLEXITIES

VITAL NEWS examines how Cambiare’s ignition coils cater for a range of complex engines.

Technical advancements over the years have seen ignition coils evolve from the original oil-filled coils to the more modern pencil coils and rail coils. Cambiare, the vehicle electronics specialist, understands the dynamics and complexities of the products and is dedicated to providing the aftermarket with OE-quality and BER compliant parts. Cambiare’s range of about 450 ignition coils includes dry coils, pencil coils, rail coils, ignition modules and coil packs covering all major vehicle applications.

CATALOGUING Cambiare’s detailed cataloguing ensures accurate and detailed listing of parts– simply search the web catalogue at www.cambiare-ve.com by vehicle application, OE numbers, engine codes and/or competitors’ cross-reference. The website also provides useful technical information and installation tips as well as the latest news.

Highlights include: PART NO. VE520388 VE520111 VE520254

DESCRIPTION Rail coil Pencil coil Ignition module

APPLICATION Vauxhall Astra 1.4 (2009>) Renault Megane 1.6 (2010) Audi A1 1.2 (2010>)

DIVERSITY Developed from OE specifications, Cambiare products can always be trusted to deliver on product specific details and quality. Understanding the complexity of vehicle manufacturers’ catalogues means that Cambiare ensures that the product range is consistent with manufacturers’ product diversity.

EXAMPLE: PEUGEOT PARTNER 1.4 Two different rail coils are used for the PSA TU3JP engine, depending on the vehicle manufacturers’ production dates and series. These rail coils may look identical except for the colour of the plugs but inside it’s a different story. Cambiare lists 2 different part numbers in sync with Peugeot’s designs and specifications for the Peugeot Partner 1.4 with the engine code TU3JP, depending on the production date: PART NO.

IGNITION COIL FAILURE When ignition coils fail, the vehicle experiences an array of problems. It can be harder to start the engine, there can be a failure to start, stalling (especially while idling), misfiring leading to loss of power, and/or backfires causing possible damage to the catalyst.

QUALITY With an emphasis on quality and with continuous range development, Cambiare offers a comprehensive programme for the aftermarket. The design of high quality ignition parts should be such that the material used must be resistant to heat and moisture in the engine bay and function reliably, even in changing weather conditions. Oil and petrol vapours should not harm the housing as that would impair its function. All Cambiare coils are thermal, shock and endurance tested to ensure that they perform in the most testing of conditions. Cambiare coils are designed to OE specifications and assure you of a correct fit first time, every time.

Top row: VE520118 rail coil and plug, bottom row: VE520119 rail coil and plug

The operational difference between these parts comes from the inclusion of an in-built module for fully electronic ignition for the latter. If the coil is replaced with an incorrect alternative, the result will be misfires or failure to start.

PORTWEST PROTECTS WITH WINTER WORKWEAR

VITAL NEWS learns about the importance of appropriate, safety-conscious workwear with Portwest. Autumn is traditionally the busiest time of the year for the workwear and PPE market as companies plan ahead for the inevitable cold weather and look for ways to ensure workers are warm and protected. FPS and Portwest are constantly striving to improve and develop styles and ranges for end users. Several of the Portwest ranges have recently been developed to conform to EN342 for protection against the cold. Furthermore, new technologies are already being tried and tested.

THE GLOVE PROTECTION RANGE

Woollen hats

In general, the UK workwear and PPE market is buoyant and predicted to continue to grow at the rate of 3.3% per year until 2016. There are extensive opportunities and new developments in workwear fabrics and PPE and more thought than ever is now being given to design, style and ergonomics.

LEGISLATION The market is continuously under review, with legislation and worker safety becoming ever more important. Portwest product specialists strive to develop products that exceed requirements set by industry experts and work full-time with companies on wearer trials, product selection and providing solutions that are fit for purpose.

RANGE OVERVIEW FPS are now stocking many of the new lines that Portwest has introduced as part of the Winter 2014 collection and of particular interest will be the Portwest thermal base layer garments, including the B131 base layer legging and B133 thermal base layer top. These products are made of 93% wicking polyester and 7% spandex. The fabric is further coated with a B133 Thermal Base Layer Top permanent anti-bacterial Silver Ion treatment to combat odour and increase longevity.

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 36

The new and unique fabric technology locks in the body’s warmth to create a thermal barrier, which is then regulated during exerting conditions. The fabric enables enhanced performance for the wearer by rapidly wicking excess moisture away from the skin. This allows the wearer to keep dry, warm and comfortable in extreme cold.

The glove protection range, offers a solution for most working environments. The range includes mechanics style, thermal protection, drivers and riggers, welding, chemical protection and cut resistant gloves. There is also a wide range of general handling gloves made from latex, string knits, PU and nitrile. FPS are now stocking the cut resistant glove range, which is specifically developed to provide protection against cuts, sharp objects and mechanical risks.

Gloves

THE PROTECTIVE FOOTWEAR RANGE FPS also supplies a wide range of certified safety footwear, including composite and steel toe choices. The Compositelite is a leading brand of footwear, which is lightweight, flexible and metal free. Compositelite footwear contains non-metallic protective toecaps and/or non-metallic protective midsoles.

QUALITY All of the Portwest ranges, available via FPS, are extensively tested by independent world-renowned testing institutions. The products carry full CE markings, along with EN certification, NFPA/ANSI certification and GO/ST Russian standards. Portwest has a consistent quality of products, as is expected from a premium European manufacturer. They place a high value on worker safety, product durability and user comfort, all of which is evident throughout their extensive product range. For more information on the Portwest range please contact your local FPS Representative or visit the Leisure & Industrial section on the F:Drive.

STEERING ITS WAY TO THE TOP VITAL NEWS talks to Remy about its extensive Electric and ElectroHydraulic Power Steering ranges. The rapid advancement of automotive steering related technologies over the last ten to fifteen years is now generating a requirement for associated products in the aftermarket. This is creating exciting opportunities for motor factors who work with market-leading suppliers such as Remy who are ahead with these technologies. Remy, the market-leading steering brand has recently introduced over 100 new steering parts. These new additions bring the total Remy steering pump and rack range to well over 2,000 parts, covering more than 20,000 applications. The Remy steering range currently covers more than 95% of the UK car parc and new parts continue to be added regularly to further enhance the power steering ranges. In line with all Remy products, continued research and development ensures that this extensive product range remains ahead of the market, to provide factors with access to the newest technologies. Remy offers the latest in Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering (EHPS) and Electric Power Steering (EPS) technology, including column drive EPS.

RANGE DEVELOPMENT Remy’s ongoing range development creates strong sales opportunities for the UK aftermarket by ensuring the best car parc coverage in the UK. Remy’s aim is to always offer top quality products at competitive prices and wants to ensure that FPS factors have access to the newest technologies which are not often available in the aftermarket. There are three part areas:

• Pumps (power steering pumps, EHPS pumps) • Racks (manual, power, EPS) • Column drive EPS

New introductions to the range include: PART NO.(S) DESCRIPTION APPLICATIONS DSR1876

*A steering rack with an electric motor on the steering housing. The majority of Remy’s competitors only supply the rack without the electric motor, whereas Remy supplies the complete unit with electric motor too, ensuring a fully functioning and tested product which also reduces installation time.

In some cases, Remy’s range can offer products to combat component sourcing problems found with a particular vehicle’s steering system such as: DSPK300 - A newly launched kit consisting of an EHPS pump, a hydraulic steering rack and interconnecting pipe for the Vauxhall Astra MkIV. The Vauxhall Astra MkIV was initially fitted with a Delphi or a TRW EHPS pump and hydraulic steering rack. Delphi ceased production of both parts a few years ago and cores for remanufacturing are scarce and often in poor condition. The Remy DSPK300 converts Delphi equipped Vauxhall Astra MkIVs into a TRW system thus offering a replacement solution for a part that’s no longer available.

QUALITY All Remy steering components undergo numerous processes and tests to produce an OE-equivalent unit. Every unit is then 100% tested using the most stringent state-of-the-art test equipment. As steering racks are safety critical, a quality replacement rack is essential and Remy provides parts your customers can rely on. All Remy parts meet the highest quality standards under ISO 9001:2008 and come with a 2 year warranty.

EXTRAS

• All products come with a 1 year warranty.

For more information on the Remy range, please contact your local FPS representative or call the technical hotline on 0121 313 5201.

DEMISTIFYING HUMIDITY ISSUES

VITAL NEWS explores ThoMar’s range of dehumidifiers, which are perfect for use in-vehicles.

The exteriors of today’s vehicles are very well protected against moisture and humidity, but not the interiors. Upholstery, plastics, and more importantly the electronics are very sensitive to humidity and exhibit corrosion, fungal growth, mould stains and musty odours. Motorists experience a further nuisance in winter: obstructed visibility owing to misted-up windscreens, something that even an air-con has problems to curb. Wiping the windscreen leaves streaks that affect vision in the low winter sun.

AIR DRY

• Part No: 604.060 • Dimensions: 35 x 16 x 9cm*

The high humidity condition in the car accelerates the process of corrosion of metal parts, causing rust and discolouration. ThoMar’s Air Dry and Multi Dry dehumidifiers effectively protect vehicles, caravans, motorbikes and trailers from the damaging effects of excess moisture.

Scan the QR Code with your smartphone or tablet to view how Air Dry clears up mist from vehicles.

• Weight: 1 kg • Moisture absorption: 600ml*

*Approximate measurements

Small and light, the Air Dry dehumidifier fits easily and unobtrusively in vehicles. Whether on dashboards, in footwells, on back seats, parcel shelves or even inside the car boot, this little product does a big job.

Unlike conventional salt-dripping systems, there is no risk of spillage that can cause further damage to furnishings or the body of the car. Its non-harmful, absorbent granules means Air Dry is safe to use around children and pets.

The innovative pillow design is durable and absorbs water through a salt and clay formula packed inside. These natural storage granules are highly absorbent, locking moisture within the pillow until dried in sunlight or by a radiator.

Designed specifically for use in vehicles, the discreet, grey-coloured pillow is effective for 3-4 months at a time. The bag consists of a felt-like fabric on the top that absorbs moisture and a coated fabric at the base, which prevents the transfer of moisture below.

MULTI DRY

• Part No: 601.020 • Dimensions: 35 x 16 x 9 cm*

• Weight: 1kg • Moisture absorption: 600ml*

*Approximate measurements

Multi Dry is so called for its high-performance results in various environments. Developed initially for home applications, this dehumidifier can also be used in caravans, trailers, vehicles and boats. The Multi Dry dehumidifier has a long, bag-shaped design which can be hung, or placed horizontally or vertically in a number of places and is effective in areas of very

high humidity. The degree of saturation can be determined by weighing the bag – the maximum capacity is reached when the bag weighs 1.6kg. Depending on humidity and temperature, the dehumidification function is effective for 2-4 months for an area of about 35m³. The natural, odourless granules absorb water content in the air effectively.

These easy-to-use and extremely safe products help in keeping your vehicle interiors dry and smelling fresh. Furthermore, they can be regenerated (eg: on a radiator) over and over, making them a cost-effective and eco-friendly solution to all sorts of humidity-related problems. For more information on ThoMar’s range of dehumidifiers, please contact your local FPS Representative. VITAL NEWS ISSUE 36

NEWSDESK What’s new from the market KILEN SPRINGS

NEW AND IMPROVED CASTROL MAGNATEC OIL

Kilen introduced over 100 new-torange coil springs last month which adds to the 60 already launched earlier in the year. Another 270 are expected to be released during October and November and all of these new parts can be found in the new 2015 printed catalogue.

One of Castrol’s best-selling premium oil brands, Castrol Magnatec, has always provided instant protection against engine wear since its launch more than 15 years ago, but now something new has been added. ‘Intelligent molecules’ help the oil cling to engine parts, so that even in startup, when critical components are exposed to abrasion, the engine remains lubricated.

Popular new applications are: PART NO. 10620 50610 14941 54932 21118 61071

All Kilen springs are of matching OE quality and are certified to ISO9001 and TS16949. The Kilen coils, sport and gas springs are all supplied with a 3 year warranty (whereas all leaf springs are supplied with a 1 year warranty).

WATCH THE BIRDY! Since speed cameras were first introduced at the turn of the millennium, they’ve borne witness to a lot more than speeding vehicles. Besides hand gestures, bare behinds and even motorcycle wheelies, a number of birds have been snapped gliding, posing and swooping past the cameras’ lenses. Early this year, this little fellow, an exotic parakeet, was flying free over the M6 in Stafford. Despite the unglamorous backdrop, which is not quite their usual jungle habitat, the bird wasn’t deterred from pausing for a quick selfie. The Highways Agency quickly posted the posing bird on its Twitter page which prompted a review of the number of escaped animals from zoos and pet shops. Impressively, some instances of birds caught on speed cameras are down to the bird actually flying at speeds which break the speed limit. This brings a whole new meaning to the phrase, “watch the birdy” and is sure to make the job of speed camera analysts a lot more interesting!

CAE has ventured into a new aftermarket partnership with Energizer which will be distributed through FPS. Available in 156 countries, the well-known Energizer brand is popular throughout the world as the leading supplier of batteries and torches and will soon include a selection of premium automotive products too.

Highlights include: PART NO. DESCRIPTION 50507 Twin USB Adaptor/ Charger 50501

JUMP LEADS Lack of use, faulty alternators and cold weather are just some of the reasons why car batteries lose charge, resulting in problems when starting the car. There are many fundamental aspects which could suffer if a sudden surge or spike in energy ran through the car during the jump starting process. It is therefore beneficial to use reliable jump leads to avoid any potential damage to the parts and electrical circuitry of the vehicle. All Energizer jump leads are made from copper clad aluminium cables and PVC insulation. The fully insulated spring loaded, colourcoded clamps also provide added user safety. GATES POWER CLEAN FLUSH TOOL

Gates introduces an essential tool for effective cooling system servicing. Gates has added a new specialist tool to its range for in-depth cleaning of vehicle cooling systems: the Gates Power Clean™ Flush Tool. The tool is universal, with one part number for any car make or model (part no. 91002). Cooling systems can be difficult to flush completely, especially if there is a severe accumulation of debris but Gates Power Clean™ Flush Tool remedies this problem with ease and efficiency every time.

ENHANCED SERVICE It is important to periodically flush the complete cooling system including the radiator, engine block and heater core. A complete flush is also critical before changing cooling system service parts. During vehicle services, it is more likely that only the radiator will be flushed, rather than the whole system. Gates recommends full flushes as best practice, urging garages to simplify and enhance the current process with the Gates Power Clean™ Flush Tool, which minimises further complications from dirt and debris entering and damaging the system. A simple hose pipe flush is not adequate to clean the system, especially if the coolant and oil have mixed, or there is an accumulation of debris in the system. Damage to other parts in the system, premature failure of a newly installed component and voided manufacturer warranty can occur from inadequate flushing of the cooling system.

HOW IT WORKS The Gates Power Clean™ Flush Tool “water hammers” accumulated sludge and scale deposits without the use of harsh chemicals or solvents. Pulsating technology ensures a complete and thorough system flush, eliminating problems technicians usually face when attempting a thorough clean of cooling systems, as well as radiators, heat exchangers, hoses and engine blocks. Where a blockage is encountered, the tool automatically regulates the pressure to a safer level, to prevent the possibility of damaging the system.

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 36

THE COOLING SYSTEM A vital part of the system is the cooling agent. This “fluid connection” between the cooling system components not only protects the engine from extreme temperatures, it protects the cooling system from rust and corrosion. With time, the additives in the coolant become depleted. If the coolant gets contaminated with traces of oil, dirt and other harmful particles, for example, it loses its effectiveness. When changing the water pump, if the coolant is contaminated with debris and enters the seal pack, this will prevent correct sealing which can affect warranty. Any debris present could also damage the impeller on a newly installed water pump. One way to prevent this is to completely flush the system with the effective Gates Power Clean™ Flush Tool. The efficient, professional results are unbeatable and provide a thorough and reliable outcome.

When changing the water pump remember to completely flush the system to remove any possible damaging contamination

SUMMARY Gates Power CleanTM Flush Tool:

• maintains system integrity • ensures warranty coverage on replacement parts, including water pumps • provides a complete set of tips and connectors to be used on radiator necks, engine blocks and heater core tubes • offers an alternative way to provide complete care for cooling systems of any vehicle make and model, thereby reducing warranty claims For support, please call Gates Technical Hotline on 0844 980 0062.

FPS REVAMPS ITS RADIATOR

Nissens radiators have recently been added to the FPS portfolio to improve the overall service to the market on a product that demands being competitive alongside high availability and quality. As the UK market leader, Nissens is an established brand that will provide an excellent platform for radiator sales to improve and flourish.

ABOUT RADIATORS The radiator plays an important role when it comes to protecting the engine and ensuring its optimal performance. In any engine, there may be up to 4,000 combustions per minute, with temperatures of up to 1,500°C. The purpose of the engine cooling system is to efficiently transfer a substantial surplus of heat to the air surrounding the vehicle. In order for the radiator to cool the engine coolant, it absorbs and radiates heat in a process of thermal conversion. This is essential, as regulating the engine temperature maximises engine performance, efficiency and fuel-economy. With ever-increasing fuel efficiency and greater power demanded from modern engines, the pressures on the cooling system components are also increased in order to get the most from the system.

14 RADIATORS

Coolant radiators are installed in the air flow of the vehicles’ frontend. They dissipate heat produced by combustion in the engine, absorbed by the coolant, and then expel into the atmosphere. They also provide coolant to the oil and EGR coolers. Maintaining the quality of the coolant will ensure water tightness under thermal loop pressure.

RADIATOR FAULTS Generally radiators only need changing after impact damage or corrosion. A quality radiator is able to resist long-term external corrosion caused by environmental conditions, such as salt spray in winter, however a common occurrence could still be down to low coolant / anti-freeze levels, or the body design of the car and how protected the radiator is. Using anti-corrosive coolant with antifreeze and changing the solutions every 2 years will ensure better radiator protection and efficiency. Coolant and antifreeze is available from FPS. Nissens radiators are designed with anti-corrosive elements to protect the unit as much as possible.

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 36

RANGE WITH NISSENS A faulty radiator and poor cooling performance can become noticeable with:

- Increased engine temperature - Permanent radiator fan operation - Poor air conditioning system performance These symptoms can be caused by:

- Loss of coolant caused by damage to the radiator by gravel throw or accident - Loss of coolant through corrosion or leaky connections - Poor heat exchange caused by impurities such as dirt, insects or limescale deposit - Soiled or old coolant It is absolutely necessary to use the correct antifreeze, and in the correct proportion with distilled water. Tap water, dirty water, reuse of the old antifreeze or mixing different kinds of antifreeze will cause chemical corrosion and ultimate failure. It is therefore also vital that the entire cooling system is flushed in order not to pollute the new radiator with harmful remnants of the old antifreeze. Nissens has three main categories of radiators available:

BRAZED RADIATORS Controlled Atmosphere Brazing (CAB) processes create very strong and durable cooling unit structures. The cores of the radiators are produced with heavy-duty tubes, highly efficient double-folded fins, optimally-shaped louvres and a small tube distance to ensure excellent durability and cooling performance.

FULL-ALUMINIUM RADIATORS Nissens offers a range of market-popular full-aluminium radiators which offer a number of attractive benefits, such as, lower weight, non-corrosive, cost-efficient and excellent cooling properties.

5mm RADIATORS Nissens is the first manufacturer in Europe to offer radiators produced in-house based on the latest 5mm technology. The reduced size meets the need to combine a larger cooling efficiency with a significantly reduced space for a more efficient cooling unit. More and more Nissens products apply the 5mm technology. Today, radiators building upon the 5mm technology comprise a full coverage of 35 OE numbers within 44 car models. Originally, the 5mm technology was introduced and applied in a selection of popular Japanese cars but as the European market potential grows, the number of new cars equipped with the 5mm cooling technology is developing rapidly.

ONGOING DEVELOPMENT Hundreds of products are launched every year to ensure that Nissens’ position as a leading radiator manufacturer is maintained. Nissens invests heavily in being a first-to-market supplier, which is fundamental to its strategy. This ensures customers have the opportunity to be the first suppliers of a unique selection of the latest products for the newest applications in the aftermarket.

DESIGNING HEAD GASKETS AT FEDERAL-MOGUL IS NO EASY TASK VITAL NEWS speaks to Payen about designing head gaskets. For every Payen® head gasket, there are a myriad of factors which must be taken into account when designing the product for each and every application. Engine architecture, clamp load ratio, combustion pressure limitations, available surface area, thermal stresses and the degree of deformation in the engine at peak operation, all make engineering and constructing head gaskets extremely complicated. The head gasket sits between the engine block and cylinder head amongst significant pressures and variable surfaces. Thus, it must be specifically designed to provide a compressed seal to ensure that coolant and engine oil do not leak into the cylinders.

RANGE OVERVIEW The Payen range comprises over 1,725 cylinder head gaskets. Over the last two years, there has been an increase in sales of over 200 newer designs. This is set to rise over the coming months and years for models such as the Audi A3 and the Vauxhall Corsa. Despite these increasing sales figures, the old classics still sell well, although steadily slipping down the Pareto listings as the car parc changes.

Paul Saunders, Director of Aftermarket Engineering in Europe explains, “Very few engines are truly alike – each application represents an array of unique operation and design parameters that place corresponding demands on the head gasket”.

DIFFERENT ENGINE, DIFFERENT GASKET The design process begins with an intense focus on the gasket’s operating environment – the engine’s physical design and architecture. The following factors are taken into consideration while designing:

• head and block material, displacement, fuel type and injection method, use of a turbo or supercharger, cooling system design, number of head bolts and target clamp loads; • key operating parameters, such as maximum power and torque, peak firing pressure and temperature, amount of head lift and bore distortion; and • required gasket thickness and head and block surface finishes – including casting waviness, flatness and porosity. The margin for error in each of the above is so tiny that the smallest imperfection can have significant effect on the life of both a gasket and an engine.

LAYERED STEEL A majority of head gaskets for the OE market feature multi-layer-steel construction combined with several design features that address the engine’s precise operating characteristics. Federal-Mogul engineers determine how many functional layers of full-hard stainless steel are needed to provide both the desired compressed thickness (key to ensuring correct compression ratio) as well as the necessary “spring” action to accommodate head lift. Other key decisions include the configuration and thickness of the combustion “stopper” layer – which prevents gasses from escaping the combustion chamber and/or damaging other areas of the gasket body – and which types of coatings will be used on each gasket layer to ensure trouble-free combustion and fluid sealing.

TESTING MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE Have you ever wondered how major engine manufacturers determine which head gasket technology is the right choice for their latest engines? The process of developing a new head gasket involves hundreds of hours of research and development work, as well as extensive customer input and electronic analysis to identify the engine’s unique characteristics and operating demands. Only then can Federal-Mogul engineers begin to piece together the complex puzzle that ultimately becomes a Payen head gasket.

16 HEAD GASKETS

Behind each Payen head gasket – regardless of its intended market – is the most extensive testing in the sealing industry. Dedicated technology facilities include dozens of engine dynamometer labs and other highly sophisticated engineering tools necessary to prove that each Payen head gasket “performs under pressure”.

NICHE PRODUCTS FPS’ NEW RESEARCH INITIATIVE FOR UNIQUE AND NICHE PARTS In last month’s issue, Vital News introduced FPS’ new research initiative, developed to identify unique and niche parts – those one-off, rarely asked for product groups that perhaps fail on specific applications; the parts that are possibly lost to the dealer as the aftermarket isn’t renowned for having them readily available; the application gaps within existing ranges and the emerging technologies that may not have yet migrated into the aftermarket supply chain.

Parts such as the clutch fork for the 2009 Citroën 1.6 Hdi Berlingo, water pipe for Renault Clio I and Ford Ka Coolant Tank, also introduced into FPS’ range recently as recognised failing parts.

There are some product groups where it is not necessary to have a full range available, as they do not fail across many vehicle marques – it is instead a need to identify the specific applications where parts happen to fail, and fail consistently, and introduce them into range. Parts such as the Renault dephaser pulley, now available from FPS, is a camshaft pulley that fits on to the end of the camshaft, constantly adjusting the timing, depending on the speed and stress on the engine, and failing frequently in the process.

Factors can find these parts via vehicle application or OE number on FPS’ electronic cataloguing system; alternatively contact your local Branch who will be able to assist.

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 36

The pressure rail sensor has its own issues on Ford Fiesta, Fusion and Focus models as well, which all combine to demonstrate how the initiative is working and what sort of products are being introduced, and how specific the applications and failures are.

If you have also had any recent demands for one-off products in a similar manner, please feedback to us via product@fpsdistribution.co.uk, and we will endeavour to add them into range.
