WELCOME

INSIDE THIS ISSUE…

Note from the MD

Welcome to the 10th year anniversary issue of Vital News! Many things get better with age – fine wine and classic cars spring to mind, maybe the wisdom that each of us accumulates with time, perhaps the fruit from a wellcared for tree and also we believe the Vital News, which we have nurtured and cared for over the past decade, and grown from a humble 2-pager to its current impressive state, striving to provide you – our customers – with vital product news, views and information from FPS and the wider aftermarket. The magazine’s growth, both in terms of content and circulation, is a reflection of how FPS itself has grown over the years to bring you more and more sales opportunities, and we very much appreciate your support in helping us do that. Quality assurance being a key decisive factor in the choice of ignition coils, Cambiare has recently invested further into its testing facility. This issue, we review the test process involved and how it assures continued product improvement. We are giving you an update of the 360° initiative and to help you further, we have now added a guide to look for ‘hard-to-find’ parts online. We also provide you with an overview of the febi range, recently introduced into the FPS family. Also covered this issue are features from Gates, TRW, K&N® and Shaftec. Don’t

miss the Pre-1980s catalogue feature, where we decode the ignition system of veteran vehicles and the ensuing business prospects from these components in winter. Speaking of winters, however uncertain the weather conditions in the next few months, there is always a consistent demand of maintenance products, accessories and protective workwear – which is why it is always a good idea to showcase them well in order to increase sales. We have tried to give you a brief summary of what to display, using our own Showroom as an example, and how to make the most of the season, as well as features on ThoMar airdry, Comma® Xstream® antifreeze and a list of FAQs from POR-15, the rust treatment specialists. As always, our regular features include Graham Knight’s summary of the ongoing activities of IAAF for the benefit of the independent aftermarket. We continue to look forward to your feedback on how to make the business better and more responsive to what you need and expect from us, so do let us know. Meanwhile, happy reading!

ENSURE FLEETS ARE WINTER READY! The HGV+ platform at FPS helps prepare fleets for the oncoming season. To keep fleets moving, it is crucial that they are fitted with high quality heavy-duty batteries. The GS Batteries range covers a variety of popular applications. The Remy HD portfolio caters for all winter-related rotating electrics requirements. Trailer components are important throughout the year, but during the winter months, more demand is placed on side markers, rear lights and work lamps. All are crucial to ensure the trailer fleet is roadworthy during the dark nights. HGV+ offers a multi-branded solution to meet such needs. Furthermore, Portwest offers an extensive range of winter safety clothing, such as Hi-vis jackets. For more information on products within the HGV+ platform, please contact your local FPS representative.

TEST ASSURED

VITAL NEWS gets first-hand experience of the newly developed Cambiare ignition coil testing facility and how it assures superior quality replacement parts. Engine management specialist Cambiare has been at the helm of providing OE quality replacement parts for vehicle electronics through strict adherence to precision manufacturing and stringent quality assessment procedures. With a comprehensive portfolio of parts available at a competitive price point, Cambiare has always been able to provide customers with superior quality automotive parts. As part of Cambiare’s commitment to providing the aftermarket with high quality replacements, it continues to develop and expand its testing facilities.

FACILITATING QUALITY The newly refurbished test centre now houses, among others, a bespoke designed, fully operational Ignition Coil Test Machine. Using custom designed equipment and under the focus of a highly motivated and skilled team, the new ignition coil testing facility is being utilised for:

• Validating receipted warranty claims • R&D purposes, ensuring that all additions to the Cambiare portfolio meet the high standards expected by its customers When testing a part received via a warranty claim, the Cambiare quality team reads the customer’s diagnosis as stated, tailors the type of test required accordingly and then creates a detailed report*. The information produced allows the Cambiare technicians to identify any malfunctions within the coil and thus helps in improving production facilities, ensuring continued quality and development.

EXPERTS SPEAK The Cambiare Technical Team offers an insight into some of the more commonly found faults, which appear to be an issue with the ignition coil, but are proven to be elsewhere on close inspection:

FAULTY/WORN SPARK PLUGS AND IGNITION LEADS

• F ault codes specifying a single coil fault on a particular cylinder may not necessarily be true with a ‘wasted spark’ coil setup. This is where a spark plug or ignition lead may be the source of the issue • Spark plugs work as hard as the coil and are service parts that perform in a much harsher environment. They should be the first to be inspected when a misfire is detected or could cause overloading and premature failure of the ignition coil as a result of misdiagnosis, ensuing in multiple customer visits • Plug leads, subjected to vibration and routing problems, cause wear and internal breakdown. If not checked thoroughly, it can lead to misdiagnosis of the coil INCORRECT PART REPLACEMENT

Based on engine code, chassis or engine number breaks, where multiple options are available. While the external design may look identical, the internal electronic differences can make the part incompatible with the vehicle, causing premature failure. POOR LT CONNECTIONS AT THE ECU AND GROUNDING

These can create excessive load on the coil, leading to premature failure and misfires. It is essential to encourage garages to correctly diagnose the faults by using the right equipment and then replace using OE quality parts. Cambiare currently offers 400+ OE quality ignition coils, covering over 23 million applications, with further expansions planned, owing to its continual R&D programme. All parts are catalogued on www.cambiare-ve.com and fully supported by FPS’ stocking and logistics. The portfolio is backed by a 2 year/30,000 mile warranty, technical support hotline on 0845 543 8280 as well as promotional and technical materials.

A HANDY GUIDE

Continuing with its initiative to service the classic, vintage and veteran car market, FPS explains how best to make use of the seasonal sell opportunities through its recently launched and exclusive PRE-1980s CATALOGUE on the F:Drive.

KNOW THE MARKET

OPPORTUNITIES

In striking contrast to today’s electronic ignition systems that provide lower emissions, higher mileage, greater reliability and longer life for its components, cars up to the mid-1970s were developed on a conventional contact breaker type ignition system which is divided into the primary and secondary circuits.

Since its launch in May 2015, the Pre-1980s catalogue feature has successfully addressed the market for classic, vintage and veteran cars; it now comprises nearly 11,500 parts that make for a good business opportunity in the winter.

The primary circuit runs on the 12V car battery and is operated by the contact breaker points and ignition switch whilst the secondary circuit consists of the secondary windings of the coil, coil lead, distributor cap, distributor rotors, spark plug leads and spark plug- all of which are susceptible to failure every now and then.

• • • •

33710: Condensor for Triumph Herald Mk1 1.3L (1967-1971) 22730V: Contact Set for Ford Capri Mk1 1.6L (1968-1973) 44750: Distributor Cap for Austin Maxi Mk1 1.7L (1969-1979) 47110S: Rotor Arm for Saab 99 2.0L (1974-1978)

an extensive range of spark plugs, ignition coils, ignition leads sets and car batteries, form part of the multi-branded offering that covers 700,000+ vehicles on the UK roads.

In the absence of specific recommendations, a ‘rule of thumb’ to follow is to inspect, clean and re-set points every 30,000 miles (or annually, whichever comes first) and renew every 60,000 miles, along with associated components. Winter months highlight the deficiencies in the ignition components, especially in a classic, and the problems worsen due to incorrect settings. Most end-users choose to ‘rest’ their classics through the winter months, resulting in serious difficulties when trying to start it again in spring. For users who tend to use their cars through the winter, the ignition system needs to be in top condition to ensure positive starting and efficient, economical running.

BOOT IT! Encourage DIYers and end-users to carry spare ignition system components in the boot, including a coil, condenser, rotor arm, contact points and distributor cap.

EARLY 1900s

HAPPY TO HELP! Catering for distress requirements and stocking parts that no one else does or would, the Pre-1980s catalogue feature offers the following benefits:

• Around 11,500 parts across 35 different brands • Easy access to data and availability of parts across branches • Same/next-day delivery • Seamless lookup on the Car Search section of the F:Drive • Paperless cataloguing Speak to your local FPS representative for more information.

A CLEANER DRIVE VITAL NEWS speaks to Kevin Price, UK Marketing Manager for TRW, to know how emerging technologies like the D-Tec brake pads enhance aftermarket opportunities. TRW is a pioneer in the design, development and manufacture of complete braking systems for vehicle manufacturers. Over the past 20 years, the business has directly transferred this experience into the aftermarket, providing a strong support to motor factors across the UK. Having manufactured over 100m brake pads in-house, TRW carefully monitors industry trends to provide innovative solutions

and in line with its policy of ‘Greener Thinking’, introduced the D-Tec range in 2014.

Vital News (VN): How does D-Tec differ from other brake pads available in the aftermarket? Kevin Price (KP): D -Tec eliminates the choice drivers traditionally had to make between the high performance associated with (low) metallic friction material, and the low dust of a ceramic formulation, by offering both. Tested to meet exacting industry standards, the D-Tec range is also designed to be aesthetically appealing with a TRW red shim.

VN: FPS’ 360° initiative aims at providing the aftermarket with emerging technologies – how do D-Tec pads sit alongside this programme? KP: TRW takes innovations very seriously – all D-Tec brake pads are treated with Cotec – TRW’s innovative silicate brake pad coating that provides optimum performance from the first stop. Independent tests show that Cotec-coated pads outperform OE and major competitor pads by reducing stopping distance by up to 7 metres when stopping immediately following a pad change.

VN: How does D-Tec cater for modern vehicle technologies and applications? KP: We invest heavily in R&D to ensure that our products and technologies are in line with the needs of the modern vehicle technician. With close connections to every level of the aftermarket, we understand what factors need in order to allow their customers – the garages to grow their businesses. The D-Tec programme covers 75% of the UK vehicle parc, with the latest range extension providing references for vehicles such as: Audi A4, A5 and Q7; VW Transporter and BMW 7-Series.

At the start of the ‘bedding in’ process, the brake pad exhibits ‘green behaviour’, where the friction co-efficient is lower and drivers can find it difficult to adjust to the difference in performance during these first stops. By improving contact between the brake disc and pad, TRW Cotec addresses this issue. Thinking in terms of systems, engineers from across TRW work together to integrate our OE knowledge into the aftermarket offer, resulting in premium quality braking parts which work in perfect harmony within the system.

Standing for ‘Dust-reducing Technology’, the D-Tec brake pads, available on next-day delivery from FPS, offer 45% less dust without compromising on performance.

What kind of campaign activities have you planned for the range? VN: KP: The TRW Perfect Match campaign highlights the benefits of fitting both its pads and discs – backed by its new, extended 3 year/36,000 mile warranty against material or production defects when fitted together. This warranty is available by signing up to the TRW Tech Corner – a free, online technical information hub to help installers repair and replace TRW parts safely.

TRW D-Tec brake pads – 100% performance with 45% less dust Throughout October, factors have the opportunity to claim free winter clothing and vouchers when purchasing D-Tec pads from FPS* – speak to your local FPS representative for more information. (* T&C apply)

TRANSMISSION CHAMP VITAL NEWS reviews the ways in which SHAFTEC has excelled in the transmission aftermarket. Since its introduction to the FPS transmission portfolio in early 2014, Shaftec has gone from strength to strength. This is because Shaftec’s transmission programme focuses on the products that are prone to high failure rates and generate high demand in the aftermarket. While factors will only typically stock the most popular applications due to their cost and size, they have grown to rely on FPS’ same/next-day delivery to meet customer demands. Following the successful launch of the initial range available that consisted of just driveshaft and constant velocity joints (CVJs), FPS injected other product groups from the Shaftec offering. The complete Shaftec transmission programme available through FPS comprises: PRODUCT GROUP Driveshaft (Reman) CV Joint (New) Boot Kit Steering Rack Gaiter Hub Nut Universal Stretch Boots Bands TOTAL

PART COUNT 5216 1243 252 89 35 28 8 6871

WINTER WOES Although the demand for Shaftec transmission products remains strong throughout the year, it increases even further during the winter months when driveshafts and CVJs come under increased pressure. This can split the boots (see fig.1) on the CVJs and an eventual water and salt ingress can corrode the internals of the joint. The combination of poor quality roads in the UK and extremely wet winter conditions typically result in an increased demand for these parts in the first quarter of the year.

Other issues with a driveshaft or a CVJ include:

• • • • • •

Wear in ball bearings in the CVJ Wear on spline of the driveshaft Incorrectly fitted CV boot Wear on outer and inner race of the CVJ Lack of maintenance and irregular lubrication Fitting damage to the spline, thread, inner and/or outer race

10 TRANSMISSION

BUSINESS TRENDS Shaftec reports an increased demand for replacement transmission parts on vehicles Fig. 1 with early failure rates, owing to the OE thermoplastic boot splitting (shown in Fig.1) as they are less flexible and more brittle.

Vehicle models prone to this include:

• CV189AN for Audi A4 1.8 T B7 (2006-2010) • CV338AN for Skoda Superb 1.9 TDi PD (2007-2008) Range development is also an essential factor behind Shaftec’s successful offering and Shaftec continually invests to enhance its application coverage. Look out for a range extension due in late 2015, covering CVJs and driveshafts.

Popular applications covered include:

• FO210L: Driveshaft for Ford Transit Connect 1.8 TDCi (2009-2013) • CV334AN: CV Joint for Vauxhall Corsa C 1.2 Twinport (2004-2007) • BK269: CV Boot Kit for VW Golf 1.6 TDi 105 Mk6 (2009-2013) SUPPORT With a combined product knowledge spanning over 50 years, Shaftec offers the most comprehensive range available in Europe. It provides a 2 year/24,000 mile warranty on its parts and its technical support lines extend efficient advice. Moreover, accurate product details and cataloguing are available with ongoing website updates. Combining Shaftec’s continual new-to-range additions with FPS’ same/ next-day delivery, factors can rest assured that they don’t need a large stockholding to make the most of this business sector. For more information on Shaftec products, please visit the F:Drive or contact your local FPS branch.

SMART THERMOSTATS, GOOD BUSINESS GATES explains to VITAL NEWS why it is a good idea for factors to concentrate on the opportunities presented by Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP)-controlled Thermostats. The winter season sees a significant rise in the number of vehicles that require thermostat replacement. In fact, statistics reveal that 1m+ thermostat failures are detected every year in the winter, typically when the in-car heater fails – that’s good news for motor factors everywhere! Gates, one of the leading thermostat suppliers to the aftermarket, invests heavily to ensure its product range reflects OE trends.

> 500+ thermostats in range > Multiple seals and gaskets for all part numbers consolidate the range > Maximised application coverage > Reduced stock holding and inventory costs The range also includes 19 Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) -controlled thermostats for the very latest applications, with plans to introduce 6 more this year.

Top Sellers include:

• T H386103G1 for Citroën C2, C3, C3 Pluriel and Peugeot 206+,207, 207 SW • TH44510561 for Vauxhall Insignia, Meriva, Signum, Vectra and Zafira • TH373105G1 for BMW 316i and other popular applications

Benefits:

• Optimum combustion due to consistent component temperatures • Improved power output at full load due to reduced coolant temperature • Reduced fuel consumption due to increased viscosity of the engine oil and subsequent reduced frictional loss • Lower pollution emissions FAILURE AND REPLACEMENT Unlike conventional thermostats, MAP-controlled thermostats are not subjected to natural wear; they are maintenance-free and designed to last the entire engine service life. However, external factors, such as low-grade coolants can lead to material fatigue. Other possible causes include thermal overloading and contamination due to repair/ replacement of cooling system components. Therefore, it is prudent to always replace the thermostat when replacing any faulty part in the cooling system, since any loss of functionality or a complete failure can have severe consequences – even engine damage. Although they remain undetected through warmer months, owing to ‘fail-safe’ features of modern thermostats, the subsequent overcooling of the engine typically produces the following symptoms:

• poor engine performance • increased fuel consumption • higher emission levels DESIGN TECHNOLOGY The MAP-controlled thermostat was developed in order to safely raise the operating temperature of cars to a constant higher level to optimise combustion and other accompanying factors. It supplements the conventional regulation system found in other thermostats by means of an electrically controlled, integrated heating element that is activated on demand by monitoring vehicle operating conditions. This allows the thermostat to moderate the engine temperature considerably more quickly so that it can operate at the most efficient temperature for a longer period.

VITAL NEWS ISSUE 40

SALES OPPORTUNITIES FPS, the exclusive distributor of Gates in the UK, has seen a gradual Year-on-Year rise in the sale of MAP thermostats within the UK over the past 3 years with sales figures already up by 25% in 2015. THE RIGHT CHOICE COMMA advises VITAL NEWS about the significance of selecting the right antifreeze for each vehicle application.

Now the winter season is upon us, Comma sends a timely reminder to technicians that today’s antifreeze products are extremely precise and highly sophisticated and are just as specific in their applications as engine oils. So, here’s a quick and important recap of how things stand.

Similarly, BMW favours Xstream® G48® for everything – except the Peugeot diesel-engine Mini (2007-2010) – which comes with Xstream® G30® OAT as the recommendation.

TECHNOLOGY There are now three very distinct antifreeze technologies, based on Glysantin® by BASF, used by vehicle manufacturers as ‘original fill’, namely:

• Organic Additive Technology or OAT based Xstream® G30® • Silicated-OAT or Si-OAT based Xstream® G40® • Silicate or Si based Xstream® G48® In simple terms, they are differentiated by their unique chemical packages which are additives to the mono ethylene glycol or MEG base. When diluted with water, this mixture provides the vital winter antifreeze protection down to a cold -36ºC.

DON’T MIX-N-MATCH The chemical additive packages all act in different ways to perform the same fundamental function; protecting the engine and cooling system components, with which the coolant comes in contact, from corrosion (rust) and erosion (pitting). Mixing any of the three with either of the others has the effect of reducing the individual protective properties, so it is essential to know in the first place which antifreeze technology is in the system and replace or top it up strictly on a like-for-like basis.

THAT’S THE DANGER! Without accurate application data, there is no way of knowing – especially since antifreeze colour is not a reliable indicator of the technology a given manufacturer has chosen for its models.

CASE STUDY VAG (VW, Audi, Skoda, SEAT, Lamborghini and Bentley) specifies Si-OAT based Xstream® G40® for all its models from 2005 onwards and makes it a warranty critical requirement for use in servicing regimes. For VAG models prior to 2005, the recommendation might be either Xstream® G48® (Silicate) or Xstream® G30® (OAT).

14 ANTIFREEZE

On the other hand, with Ford and Vauxhall, there is no way of knowing whether it’s G30® or G48® for any of their models unless equipped with the right application data. In all of these situations, relying on a technician to get it right – which of course everyone expects – should not be left down to chance.

TRUST COMMA The Comma manufacturer-approved range of Xstream® G30®, G40® and G48® with BASF Glysantin® antifreeze covers all application requirements. The formulations are all available in various workshop pack sizes and supplied complete with ‘Next Service Due’ self-adhesive stickers attached. The entire range is covered by a 100% Compatibility guarantee, enabling the use of VRM Lookup facility at CommaOil.com, MAM Autocat+ and the F:Drive* to identify and select the appropriate Xstream® product for any model with complete confidence. Nowadays, protecting the customer’s vehicle warranty – and certainly a technician’s reputation – depends on it. PERFORMANCE PAR EXCELLENCE The K&N® High-Flow Air Filter™ range has been added to the FPS filtration programme. VITAL NEWS reveals how this offers maximum air flow and engine performance. Since its inception in 1969, K&N® Engineering, Inc. has been designing, manufacturing and enhancing air filters for the automotive enthusiast interested in maximising horsepower and acceleration. Headquartered in Riverside, California, K&N® is the world leader in performance air filter technology and prides itself as being the innovator of the unique cotton air filtration system and inventor of the High-Flow Air Filter™. FPS has recently added a range of 300+ K&N® High-Flow Air Filters™, designed to fit most modern passenger vehicles and highperformance vehicles, such as:

• 33-2405 for Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG 6.2 A209 (2006-2010)

These air filters consist of four to six sheets of cotton gauze, layered between two sheets of aluminium wire mesh. The media is then pleated and oiled to enhance its filtering capabilities and overall performance. The unique processing renders the air filters:

• Washable • Reusable • Built to last for the life of an automotive or motorcycle engine K&N® High-Flow Air Filters™ increase the horsepower of the engine with up to 50% more airflow.

• 33-2413 for Nissan GT-R 3.8 R35 (2009-2011) • 33-2304 for Subaru Impreza 2.5 WRX STi (2007-2011) Not only does K&N® cover more applications than any other manufacturer of a similar product, it also makes thousands of racing and speciality type air filters using the same technology and serves the needs of motorcycle, marine, industrial and military markets the world over.

DESIGN INNOVATION K&N® High-Flow Air Filters™ were created for an environment requiring maximum horsepower and enhanced acceleration, in addition to protection from dirt and dust. This is achieved through the unique characteristics of the high-flow cotton air filter medium, developed by K&N®.

ASSURANCE OF QUALITY The filter media are tested both in-house and by independent labs using the ISO 5011 test protocol to ensure an optimal blend of high air flow, filtration efficiency, durability and dust capacity. In addition, the filters are tested against the OE to ensure proper fit and function. The washable air filters also help reduce the number of disposable air filters required through the lifetime of a vehicle, thus making it a wiser choice for the environment. The reusable filter elements are available for most makes and models of cars and light commercial vehicles and designed to directly replace standard OE air filters. Each air filter can last up to 50,000 miles before cleaning is required and is backed by a Million Mile Limited Warranty®. The K&N® High-Flow Air Filters™ range is catalogued on MAM Autocat+ and can be found on the F:Drive upon searching by application. All parts are available the same/next-day from FPS.

FOR WINTER THE FULLY MERCHANDISED FPS SHOWROOM IN SHEFFIELD

WINTER WORKWEAR Thermal garments and hi-vis clothing remain essential for workplaces and Portwest offers a wide range. This includes thermal base layer tops, leggings and thermal outerwear, comprising short and long sleeve T-shirts and trousers. The base layers are constructed of 100% wicking polyester. The outerwear is 50% polyester and 50% cotton, that allows the skin to breathe. FPS also carries an extensive range of hi-vis clothing from jackets and trousers to gloves and hats for enhanced visibility.

ANTIFREEZE/COOLANT The harsh winter climate can damage water pumps and radiators. Investing a few pounds on good quality antifreeze, like the Comma Xstream® range stocked by FPS, is an economically sound option to save hundreds spent on repairing a cracked engine or radiator (see full overview on page 14).

VISIBILITY ENHANCERS Safety against mishaps caused by obscured vision encourages endusers to stock up on products, such as Michelin and Champion wiper blades, Holts de-icer, Polygard screenwash and other rain repellents and glass cleaners that enhance visual clarity and so make a wise choice as on-shelf display.

MORE IN STORE That’s not all… stocking up or displaying the following items on the shelves can also release some good selling opportunities:

CLEANING AND SURFACE PROTECTANTS Traffic Film Removers and Finishing Wax help in shifting stubborn and damaging road dirt from vehicle exteriors through the winter months. The salt used to grit roads leaves a highly corrosive residue on the vehicles that speeds up rusting on the exposed underside and gets into chips and scratches in paintwork, eroding under the visible surface of the body finish. Products such as Gunk TFR and MER Deep Gloss Finishing Wax offer an ideal selling opportunity.

A NOTE FROM IAAF Graham Knight sums up the developments at IAAF in aid of the independent aftermarket.

To the Aftermarket, The year 2015 has seen everyone at IAAF work tirelessly, striving to improve the situation of the independent aftermarket and getting our voice heard. This includes two very important developments: Tackling MOT proposals The IAAF leads the opposition to potential proposals towards extending the frequency of a vehicle’s first MOT test from 3 to 4 years. Such proposals came ‘out of the blue’ from the government in the latest Budget and IAAF plans to lobby on reversing it, stating that the current test frequency is both safer and more cost effective for motorists as vehicles must be inspected and serviced regularly and extending it will only increase the number of unroadworthy vehicles on the UK roads. Figures suggest one in five (22%) vehicles fail MOT in the first 3 years. With new car sales at record highs, moving to an extended testing period would potentially cause more accidents and fatalities. In recent years, the MOT testing frequency has been subject to much debate. The IAAF’s stance has always been that DVSA’s current regulation of the MOT process and the testing frequency of 3:1:1 helps make UK roads the safest in Europe. An extension in this frequency threatens all aftermarket businesses and so the industry must come together to ensure correct actions. The IAAF Annual Conference & Dinner, 2015 The theme for the Conference is: How to survive and thrive – now and in the future. It aims to examine current issues from both the UK and Europe, including the proposed changes to the MOT test frequency and key changes to the independent aftermarket from both a technical and a market-opportunity perspective for the future. Vehicle technology, for which independents provide parts and service, are not just evolving but changing radically in terms of power, transmission, security and driver involvement. While the market players are changing their approach and some of the technology favours competitors, does the customer remain the same - or is she/he changing? Can the independent aftermarket cope with this pace of change? The conference will offer fresh perspective to these questions. The event will be held on 17th December at ICC, Birmingham and hosted and compèred by leading British sports presenter John Inverdale. If there is any information you seek regarding either of the above or anything else concerning the IAM or wish to have your opinion heard, please log on to www.iaaf.co.uk or mail me at my email address below.

Kind regards,

BUST THAT RUST! VITAL NEWS speaks to POR-15 to answer the most frequently asked questions relating to its premium Rust Preventive Coating range. POR-15 is a rust-preventive paint designed for application directly on rusted or seasoned metal surfaces. It dries to a rock-hard, non-porous finish that won't chip, crack or peel and prevents rust from recurring by protecting the metal from further exposure to moisture. Keeping a vehicle rust-free not only prevents serious damage to the body but also enhances the look and value of the vehicle. While most end-users follow the steps for general maintenance and upkeep, only a few take care of rust prevention and so factors and retailers should educate users of its benefits. Here, POR-15 explains how to make the most of its range of products for vehicle maintenance: What do the different colours of POR-15 (black, clear, grey or silver) signify? The colours help differentiate the usage of the product as follows: • BLACK is generally used on frames, underside of bumpers, etc. because it’s the usual colour there. • CLEAR renders the smoothest finish and is often used as a pre-primer on exterior surfaces. • GREY is great on steel surfaces but can also be used on concrete floors as well as storage areas. • SILVER contains metal filler and should be used in badly rusted, pitted areas. Can POR-15 be used over other paints? Yes, but the benefits of POR-15 will be lost in doing so. Ordinary paints are weakened by exposure to moisture and POR-15 can only stop rust when in direct contact with the base metal. This is because POR-15 forms a cross-linked bond with the base metal which no other coating can match.

Can POR-15 be used with fibreglass? Yes, POR-15 is fully compatible with fibreglass and can be used to repair cracks in a gel coat. It will adhere better than polyester resin and has greater strength. It is recommended that POR-15 be used along with a fibreglass cloth to strengthen the surfaces of rusted out areas. However, POR-15 does not contain styrene so it cannot melt fibreglass cloth like polyester resin does. What is the best surface to paint POR-15 on? POR-15 likes rusted surfaces best. Seasoned metal and sandblasted metal are also suitable. POR-15 does not adhere well to smooth, shiny surfaces but will cling well to surfaces with proper preparation. Is it better to brush or spray POR-15? Both; however, the majority of users brush POR-15 on. When fully cured for 96 hours, POR-15 dries to a hammer tough, brushstroke free finish. Thinning should be no more than 5% and should only be completed with a POR-15 solvent. Can any of the 3-step process be skipped? This is not advised. Application of a cleaner-degreaser, metal surface preparation and POR-15 Rust Paint application are each a key step in achieving a complete rust preventative, long-term solution.

1

Can a body filler or putty be used with POR-15? Yes, but both sides of the rusted area need to be painted with POR15 and then a body filler or putty can be used as soon as the POR-15 is dry to the touch. This usually takes between 1-2 hours.

2

3

When should a POR-15 topcoat be used? POR-15 Topcoat can be used as an option where the treated area will have prolonged exposure to sunlight. Top coat can also be added when the POR-15 rust paint is dry to touch.

SPEAK TO YOUR LOCAL FPS REPRESENTATIVE FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE POR-15 RANGE OR FOR STOCKIST OPTIONS.

DRY AIR EVERYWHERE VITAL NEWS investigates what makes THOMAR airdry the premium choice for dehumidification in the market. Misted windscreens are not just a nuisance during the wet and cold months; they can be quite dangerous too. Drivers could easily overlook pedestrians, cyclists or other motorists and wiping the windscreen can leave streaks, often blinding the driver even more in the low winter sun. It is therefore better to get to the root of the problem: avoiding the condensation of moisture in a vehicle. airdry, manufactured by German desiccant specialist ThoMar is the premium choice of dehumidifier for cars, bikes, homes, motorhomes, caravans and boats. airdry is exclusively available in the UK through FPS on next-day delivery.

RANGE OVERVIEW airdry attracts moisture from the air in the vehicle, storing it safely within its natural granules.

airdry protects against:

Misted up windows

Mildew and mould stains

Rust

Bad odours

Damage to electrics

BENEFITS EFFECTIVE: the highest absorption capacity at 80% of its own weight. LONG LASTING: lasts up to 4 months in a single cycle without needing a regeneration. The bag is robust and made to last. REUSABLE: can simply be dried out upon saturation on a radiator or in an airing cupboard and has the ability to last the life of the vehicle without losing its effectiveness with time. DRIP PROOF: stores moisture inside the bag, even on saturation. Unlike other car dehumidifiers, airdry’s lower side is made of foil, making leakage impossible onto surrounding objects. C OMPACT: the right weight, size and ingredients, chosen by ThoMar based on its extensive experience in keeping cargo containers dry, effectively prevents condensation in a vehicle. ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY: contains natural granules including fired clay (not activated clay), salt and starch that curtail any danger to the environment, should the bag break. It can also be disposed of with regular waste.

POINT OF SALE SUPPORT airdry offers a stock pack deal (AIRDRYFSDUKIT) consisting of:

Besides the CLASSIC 1kg pack (part no. 604.202), airdry is also available in two scented versions: VANILLA FRESH and ICE FRESH. Additionally, there is a 2x 600g airdry DUO twin pack and the BIKE version that emits a VCI (volatile corrosion inhibitor) to further protect motorbikes during winterisation.

A BETTER CHOICE Whilst the market currently offers numerous moisture absorbers, airdry has been especially designed for use in vehicles. A recently conducted test shows how airdry compares significantly better than its competitors (see table below).

> Part no. 601.272 – an 18-piece floor standing display unit (FSDU) containing: • 6 x airdry Classic • 6 x airdry Vanilla Fresh • 6 x airdry Ice Fresh > 50 FREE flyers suitable to give out to customers The pack is priced advantageously compared to buying individual products.
