Heat up your exhaust profits

Klarius makes the case for reducing your exhaust holding in order to maximise profits

Note from the MD Dear Customer, Let me start by wishing you all a Happy New Year! Last year saw lots of investment in new and existing ranges and we are starting the New Year in the same way. Our Product Managers have been working hard to evaluate FPS’ existing portfolio, identifying gaps and bringing in new products to fill them. Throughout this issue you’ll see how this investment is helping to improve our product range and increase application coverage. We kick off with a look at some of the specialist parts that we have recently brought in from Febi Bilstein. At the time of writing, FPS has brought 423 Febi references into range, many of which have traditionally been limited to the main dealer network. These references are helping us to offer you improved coverage, and we will continue to invest in additional parts as the need arises. Our suppliers are also bolstering their ranges, and in this issue you will find news from BG Automotive about their new range of oil sumps and Gates expanded Micro-V® kit range. Traditionally a ‘dealer only’ product, sumps are a new product category. This opens up a new front on which you can expand your business with customers. Pre-packed workshop consumables is another area where there is scope for you to build new business with existing customers. The market for

these products is huge, yet very little of this business is going through the automotive aftermarket. We have put our heads together with industry-leading suppliers to produce a comprehensive catalogue of pre-packed workshop consumables, which we believe will allow you to compete in this market. Elsewhere, we have been developing value-added services to make it easier for you to do business with FPS. The F:Drive – our online purchasing system – has seen a great deal of development since its launch 2 years ago. New modules help you to see cross-sell opportunities on exhaust parts (find out more on pages 16-17), manage invoices and warranties online and more. See page 14 for a full overview of how these developments can help you to streamline day to day business processes. Despite all these changes, our core business remains the same: to supply our customers with the parts they need at the right time and at the right price, with good delivery, good range coverage and good availability. We look forward to continuing to work in partnership with all of our customers and suppliers. If there is anything we can help you with, do let us know. Meanwhile, happy reading! Proud to support

NEW Gates Hotline

Upgraded specs for Comma Antifreeze & Coolants

Gates has launched a new technical support hotline for all of your technical questions regarding Gates products and services.

Due to popular demand, the Comma antifreeze and coolant product range has recently expanded to include a new 2 litre pack size for Super Longlife Concentrate.

The new hotline will serve as the central contact point for technical concerns, including fitting queries and warranty issues. This added value service will benefit factors and garages alike, greatly enhancing Gates’ ability to communicate with all customers and resolve any issues as quickly as possible. The hotline will be available Monday–Friday, 8.30am-5pm, so next time you have a really tricky question, make sure you call 0844 980 0062.

What’s more, all Comma antifreeze and coolants have been upgraded to conform to the latest BS-6580-2010 specification. This calls for antifreeze formulated with more than 25% ethylene glycol, intended for sale to the general public, to contain at least 25 parts per million of bittering agent or childproof closure. With three times the minimum requirement of bittering agent, Comma products now exceed this standard, and ensure that protection stays in place even after the antifreeze is diluted.

Introducing AIR DRY from ThoMar AIR DRY is an odourless dehumidifier that helps to keep windscreens clear and streak free. Inside the AIR DRY bag, natural pellets trap and contain up to 600ml (approx. 1 pint) of water. Unlike conventional salt-dripping systems, there is no risk of aggressive saltwater spilling and damaging textiles. Another advantage is that AIR DRY can be regenerated (e.g. on a radiator) over and over again, making it cost effective and environmentally friendly. The range is available for next-day delivery – search for ThoMar on the F:Drive today!

Mind the G a p!

FPS is bringing new product ranges to the UK aftermarket, many of which have traditionally been restricted to the main dealer network. Vital News finds out more. Febi Bilstein’s goal is to always be among the first in the market to incorporate new product developments into its own range, with the emphasis on products perceived to be dealer only. As a result, Febi has a diverse product portfolio that consists of many specialist parts, such as hydraulic engine mounts, oil sumps & seals, washer pumps and even door handles and window winders – to name a few. FPS has identified 423 references from Febi to initially bring into range. These parts provide FPS with excellent coverage of more modern vehicle applications, and are largely available for next-day delivery. A number of fast moving references for popular applications are available same-day. As new technologies become available and application gaps are identified, additional Febi references will become available through FPS. In the meantime, here is an overview of some of the key products currently available.

Hydraulic Engine Mounts In October, FPS enhanced its engine mounting offering with the launch of new references from Febi. These modern engine mountings provide excellent coverage of the latest applications that require advanced engine mountings. At the time of writing, this stands at 91 part numbers. Traditionally, vehicle manufacturers (VMs) relied on solid rubber engine mounts to provide firm support for the engine. However, these do not provide adequate damping for modern, high torquing engines, which generate higher levels of vibration and require extra damping. These applications typically use hydraulic mounts, which, in fact, are now fitted to most new vehicles.

Common reasons for engine mounting failure: • General wear and tear due to the hostile environment in which they operate can cause cracks in the rubber and fluid leaks. How often do they fail? • 60-100,000 mile mark • 1-2 times in vehicle’s lifetime The introduction of Febi engine mounts is helping to plug modern vehicle gaps in FPS’ range: • BMW 1 Series E81 (09>) • Renault Megane III 1.6 (09>) • Ford Ka Mk1 (96-09) Some applications utilise active vibration-compensation systems that reduce engine vibration by sensing disturbances and taking active measures to compensate for the disturbance. A sensor measures engine vibrations and conveys this information to an electronic control unit, which together with an amplifier, modifies the sensor signal and generates a counter vibration through an actuator. Since launching the engine mount range, FPS has identified a number of products from the Febi range that are either not widely available in the aftermarket, or cover applications which are not covered by existing product lines.

Hydraulic mounts have two interconnected fluid-filled chambers. By transferring fluid from one chamber to another, the hydraulic mounts can achieve variable damping. Some hydraulic mounts have internal valves that adjust the mounts absorption properties according to the engine’s speed, providing higher damping at higher RPMs. These are most commonly found on ‘stop-start’ engines.

Combining selected Febi sump references with BGA’s full range gives FPS the largest sump range in the market

Oil Sumps A popular part that is often deemed as a ‘specialist’ item is the oil sump. FPS currently lists 30 Febi sump references to complement the BGA range, giving FPS the largest oil sump offering in the UK. The Febi references are unique to FPS’ offering, covering applications that would otherwise be missing from FPS’ range, such as the popular Skoda Superb 2.8 (02-08).

4 new product ranges

vital news issue 29

…many other Febi products are available from FPS The Febi Bilstein product portfolio covers a wide range of vehicle components

Febi’s sump references range from individual sump units to sets that include a combination of oil sump gasket, drain plug, O-ring, OPC, and with or without level sensor hole. These parts are not usually provided with the OE part, making Febi’s offering an excellent opportunity for you to go the extra mile for your customer and supply all the parts they need under one part number. See page 6 to find out more about the BGA sump range.

Body/Pedal Accessories Many of the products that are perceived to be “dealer only” can be found in the body/pedal accessory category, such as door locks, handles, striker pins (aka door lock pins), check straps, window winders, locking buttons and closing cylinders. Like all other parts, these items are subject to wear and tear and extreme temperatures – particularly in the winter months.

Other significant products in Febi’s comprehensive portfolio include suspension spheres, door handles and viscous fan clutch couplings – all now available from FPS

Viscous Fan Clutch Couplings (VFCC) A common symptom of a failing VFCC is the engine overheating when idling. A faulty VFCC can cause poor performance in the vehicle’s air conditioning system, because the fan also cools the air conditioner’s condenser which is commonly found directly in front of the radiator. The other potential symptom of VFCC failure is that it will draw the air at a very high rate, so in the cold weather the heating system will blow out lukewarm air rather than hot air. FPS lists viscous fan clutch couplings for popular applications, including: • Mercedes Sprinter (06-10) • BMW 320 (00-07) • Ford Transit (00-08)

And there’s more The Febi range also includes power steering pump pulleys and steering gear gaskets, as well as transmission oil strainer kits and clutch ratchet repair kits. These parts are prone to suffer from oil deposits, and incorrect oil levels, leaving them insufficiently lubricated. FPS is also stocking Febi suspension spheres, brake pressure reservoirs, coolant level sensors, driveshaft bearings and fuel sender units. You will also find that FPS now lists a number of electrical components from the Febi range, including central locking devices, windscreen wiper motor (front & rear), windscreen wiper pumps, heater motor and many more.

FPS: Now stocking Febi Most of these new Febi parts are available to order from FPS for next-day delivery, and many popular references are available same-day. A number of additional parts, suitable for older applications, are also listed. If you would like to find out more about the range, please speak to your local FPS Representative. You can place your orders online using the F:Drive, or through your local branch.

new product ranges 5

Sumping to talk about Having identified an unaddressed need in the aftermarket for a quality range of oil sumps, BG Automotive has launched its very own range of sump pan kits. Estimated to be in excess of £10 million and growing*, the oil sump market is one that factors need to consider. Traditionally a specialist, or ‘dealer-led’ product, sourcing replacement oil sump kits that combine quality and value for money has not been an easy task. BGA’s competitively priced range is the largest in the aftermarket, providing motor factors with access to a wide range of kits.

BGA’s Oil Sump Offering BGA’s new range of OE quality oil sump pan kits includes aluminium and steel pans, all of which will be supplied with the relevant sump plug and associated oil sump gasket, sump gasket kit or BGA silicone sealant. With 70 references, covering over 2,800 applications, this is the largest range available in the aftermarket. Plus, all pans will be covered by BGA’s usual comprehensive warranty plan.

Common faults and replacement issues Located at the bottom of the engine, the oil sump acts as a reservoir and is the lowest hanging section of the engine. It is therefore susceptible to damage caused by road debris, traffic calming measures, curbs/pavements and any off-road activity. The increasing number of road safety and traffic calming measures on the UK’s roads has contributed to the increasing number of failures and, therefore, replacements of these parts. BGA will continue to extend and develop the range to over 100 references within the next 12 months and more than 150 within 2 years. BGA offers complete sump kits for a number of popular applications – the parts listed below are unique to the BGA range: Make

These factors can lead to the pan becoming dented and weakened until a crack is formed, causing oil to leak from the engine. In a ‘best case scenario’ a loss of oil from a damaged pan can lead to an increase in oil consumption as the driver continues to top up the oil levels within the vehicle. All moving parts that require oil will be affected, including all camtrain and timing components. In the worst case, it can cause the engine to destroy itself in a matter of seconds.

vital news issue 29

New range brings new opportunities Consider this: the UK market for pre-packed workshop consumables is worth around £220m, yet very little of this business is going through motor factors. FPS has launched a new Workshop Consumables range that offers motor factors a low risk entry strategy into this profitable market. Traditionally, it has been difficult for motor factors to offer a comprehensive range of consumables and there are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, it requires a multitude of suppliers and a big capital outlay to achieve a stock profile that satisfies customers’ needs. You also have the problem of choosing which items will turn quickly enough to justify holding stock. Finally, many suppliers’ have minimum order requirements stretching into hundreds of pounds and delivery schedules that leave you waiting for days before your stock is replenished.

A fresh approach

Other highlights include 13 pages dedicated to trim fixings where you will find over 150 references, including specialist trim removal tools. The range covers every major car marque – it even spans OE references for the latest applications to more obscure references for classic cars. You will also find a range of products for tyre fitting and body repair jobs – new product categories for FPS. All the essential items are covered. You will find balance wheel weights, supplied in a variety of weights and sizes, for steel and alloy wheels. There is also a good selection of tyre service chemicals and specialist tools from Power-Tec – the brand of choice for professional body repairers who need tools that can withstand heavy use.

Focusing on a commercial and profitable policy of ‘all sellers with no fillers’, and with everyday low pricing, no minimum order quantities or values and next-day delivery, the Workshop Consumables range aims to be the aftermarket’s most cost-effective range of fast moving workshop consumables. All products are supplied in trade pack sizes, so, whether your customers need a pack of blade fuses in 50s or heater hose in a 20 metre coil, you can offer superb value while still obtaining good margins on previously missed sales. Your customers are already buying these products (their businesses depend on them) but they often have to wait for weekly deliveries. FPS offers you next-day delivery across this range, giving you an immediate advantage because you can satisfy demand without holding stock.

What’s in the range? The Workshop Consumables range consists of over 2,500 products, covering the essential needs of workshops, bodyshops, garages and fast fit operations. A comprehensive hard copy catalogue splits the range into 5 categories to make product selection easier: • • • • •

Electrical Components Hosing & Tubing Fasteners & Fixings Abrasives & Cutting Tools Tyre & Bodyshop Components

Within the catalogue you will find the all-new Connect range of competitively priced consumables, as well as popular brands such as Abracs, Lucas and Dormer.

vital news issue 29

Every section of the catalogue features relevant tools from Bahco, Gunson, Kamasa, Laser, Power-TEC and Unilite.

Get started The Workshop Consumables range is in stock now and ready to order – just call your local FPS branch. Alternatively, go online and use the F:Drive, FPS’ online ordering platform, to search the catalogue and order parts. Of course, you will not get many sales if no one knows that you can supply the parts, so FPS will help you push your sales with personalised and professionally printed flyers. When offered alongside the FPS’ Everyday Consumables range this new portfolio allows you to offer your customers a one-stop-shop solution for their consumables requirements. The whole kit and Gates launches the most extensive Micro-V® kit range in the market. The accessory belt drive system is not only becoming more complex but the system as a whole is playing a much more critical role when it comes to safety. Selecting and replacing the correct components is not as straightforward as it may seem at first sight. As a solution, Gates, the accessory belt drive system expert, has now extended its Micro-V® kit range by 370 references, which now stands at over 500 references in total. Further additions are planned throughout 2013.

grease, oil and other environmental contaminants), wear may occur differently on different applications. Moreover, it is not always possible to tell if all components are in good condition by visual inspection alone. According to Gates’ statistics, failures increase dramatically after the fourth year of service, so Gates recommends replacing all components simultaneously and at least every four years or 100,000 km (62,000 miles).

Higher demands Ever stricter European emission standards have led to further engine downsizing, modified combustion processes and mass reduction. Additionally, car manufacturers are looking to enhance NVH characteristics (noise, vibration and harshness) and seek to please customers with more comfort accessories such as climate control, seat heating, on-board navigation, DVD screens, electric windows, mirrors and seats etc. These additions put higher demands on the drive components leading to a higher need for maintenance and simultaneous replacement of all components.

OE quality parts

The accessory belt drive system (ABDS) is an important engine subsystem that provides power for the vehicle and comfort for the passengers. As with any system, a flawless operation depends on every component working as a team. If a component fails, the entire system breaks down resulting in extensive and costly repair. The best way to avoid this is to go for a complete overhaul of the accessory drive. Gates’ Micro-V® kits allow installers to do a full replacement by just ordering one kit containing all the necessary components in guaranteed OE quality.

As with the timing belt drive, the best way to guarantee a reliable ABDS is to change multiribbed belts and all related belt drive components at the same time. With the most extensive Micro-V® kit range in the market, ordering the right components has never been so easy. Each kit is specifically composed for its application(s) and includes one or more Gates branded multi-ribbed belts together with the matching metal parts, all handily packed in a solid cardboard box. No loose components to stock and only one part to source. In addition to Micro-V® belts, tensioners and idlers, the range also offers kits with matching torsional vibration dampers and/or overrunning alternator pulleys.

Safety first In recent years more components have been added to the ABDS and ever more accessories rely on this system for power. The alternator, water pump, air conditioning compressor and power steering pump can only be operational when the accessory drive is in good condition and runs trouble-free. If one component in the system fails, or encounters a problem, the entire system can be compromised and ultimately break down. Is it an immediate danger if your air conditioning fails? No, but losing your power steering while taking a sharp turn is. This is why an overhaul of the ABDS is not only good workshop practice, but also vital to safe driving.

A new approach to replacement

be checked for wear. Like tyres, EPDM belts wear out gradually, steadily losing rubber material and reducing performance. Gates wear indicator tool (pictured right) helps technicians to assess the wear of the EPDM belts and all metal or plastic grooved pulleys. This helps the technician to determine when a belt or a pulley has lost so much material that it should be replaced. The tool is simple to use and allows you to quickly gauge wear – whether the belt or pulley is still fitted to the engine or has been removed. Gates’ belt wear indicator tool ≥

For those that prefer a more high tech tool, Gates has also developed Pic Gauge, a free application for iPhone and Android users. Pic Gauge enables the user to check the condition of the belt in just a few seconds without taking the belt off the drive. Search the App Store for “pic gauge”. Gates is a world leading tensioner manufacturer

Real benefits A Gates Micro-V® kit eliminates the risks of matching the wrong components when replacing the entire ABDS system, as is required according to good workshop practice. If a drive system failure does occur for any reason, the choice of a single supplier for all components will only require one warranty investigation procedure rather than two or more. This saves time and eliminates the chances of a dispute about the origin of the failure. In summary, the benefits include: • • • •

Fewer decisions to make Less time lost Supplier takes responsibility for a correct match One inspection rather than two in event of failure

Cambiare’s

New Test Facility Vital News visits Cambiare’s Technical Manager, Iain Blanch, to get a first look at his new air mass sensor test facility.

Following months of research and development, the Cambiare team is buzzing with excitement at the launch of this new resource. Iain Blanch, Cambiare Technical Manager, commented, “With every AMS unit being tested prior to dispatch, customers can be confident in the quality and reliability of the Cambiare product. This translates into real, practical benefits for the customers, primarily a reduction in return rates and fewer warranty claims.” AMS are notoriously unreliable and as a consequence they have one of the highest return rates of any electrical product, be that through part failure or misdiagnosis. Manned by a specialist team, the facility can process up to 786 individual AMS per shift. All units are benchmarked against OE units to ensure that they are at least matching quality. Only the units which meet Cambiare’s strict performance criteria pass. These units are marked with a ‘Tested’ stamp. This internal quality control will help to reduce your return rates, which means less handling for motor factors and fewer warranty claims. In the event that a warranty claim does arise, the in-house test facility allows the team to process claims more swiftly. Since the test rig has been up and

running, Cambiare has reduced the process time on warranties from an average of 28 days to an average of just 8 days. The air mass flow bench comprises of an electronically controlled centrifugal fan. The fan is powered by a 3 phase digital inverter, enabling it to generate 35 cubic meters of air per minute, so that the AMS units under test are exposed to the air flow rates of an operational engine. The inverter drive is programmed with pre-defined acceleration/deceleration test cycles, which simulate the real conditions that the components would experience in everyday use. Each AMS has its own individual control module that powers the units with the required voltage. The control module also displays the output voltage from the unit under test. These output signals are also fed through a data acquisition (DAC) programme, which converts the voltage A Cambiare Air Mass Sensor measurements from a digital signal into a graphical format that can be viewed on the user display in real time. The DAC also records the test performance of each unit and generates a unique batch code that allows the unit to be tracked. If a unit is returned under warranty, it can be retested and compared against the original test results.

Not only are Cambiare air mass sensors (AMS) tested as they roll off the production line, but now they are re-tested prior to dispatch thanks to a new, bespoke AMS test bench. The test bench has been built to give customers the reassurance that they are purchasing a quality product that has been thoroughly tested.

Data from the test rig will also be used to help the Cambiare team evaluate supply lines on an on-going basis to ensure that all suppliers are delivering the highest quality parts. The complete Cambiare AMS range is available through FPS with same-day and next-day availability.

Winning Team UFI sheds light on what it takes to make filters that are worthy of the F1 circuit. In the motorsport arena few producers are capable of developing the filtration systems that match the demands of the highest performing engines. Formula 1, Rally, Moto-GP and speedboat champions all rely on UFI filters to get them through the race. Aside from being an important supplier to the Ferrari F1 team, UFI also works closely with a number of other teams on the circuit, including Virgin, Force India, Sauber, Williams and Toro Rosso. In fact, it has been known for all three podium finishers at any one Grand Prix to be driving a car that relies on at least one UFI filter.

While you would expect to achieve many thousands of miles from your car’s air filter, the life of an F1 air filter is just one race – which is never more than 305km. Revving at up to 19,000 RPM, a modern F1 engine will consume 650 litres of air every second so the air filter needs to be robust. UFI produces air filters to protect highlytuned F1 engines by removing solid particles from the air intake, filtering 4,000m3 per hour with an efficiency in excess of 90%.

F1 Oil Filters In an F1 engine the oil and filter operate in temperatures exceeding 300°C and the pressure in the engine can exceed 8,500 times the force of gravity. Therefore, filtering media must provide maximum mechanical and thermal resistance and the lowest possible weight. To this end, F1 oil filters are generally a composite of aerospace aluminium and carbon fibre, which combine hardwearing characteristics with the low weight requirements.

UFI also develops additional filters in partnership with leading F1 racing teams: Gearbox Filters • KERS Filters • High-Pressure Hydraulic Filters • Low-Pressure Hydraulic Filters • Scavenge Filters • Last Chance Filters • Friction Drive Filters UFI’s High Tech Racing Division works closely with other units within the UFI group. This means experiences with new materials and new technologies in the world of motorsport can be quickly transferred to its OE Research Centre before filtering down to its aftermarket products.

F1 Fuel Filters

UFI also boasts OEM supply agreements with more than 40 vehicle manufacturers, including Audi, Citroën, Ford, Mercedes and many more.

Race fuel consumption is typically around 75 litres per 100km (approximately 4 miles per gallon). Every single-seater F1 car is equipped with two fuel filters. Firstly, a low pressure fuel filter cleans the fuel as it leaves the fuel tank, eliminating particles down to 10 microns. Before the fuel passes into the engine’s finely tuned fuel injectors it passes through a high pressure

UFI’s full aftermarket range is available from FPS. To find out more, check out the UFI microsite, which is available to access via the F:Drive (www.fdrive.co.uk). If you would like to talk to someone about the benefits of stocking UFI, please contact your local FPS Representative.

Electronic enhancements for you Vital News finds out about the key improvements that have been made to FPS’ eCommerce system and how you can make the most of them.

2012 was a significant year for FPS’ eCommerce, with 60% of orders being placed electronically. Providing the services and support that enhance your online experience is extremely important, so we have been working hard to improve and refine our processes.

Buying online using the F:Drive We never stop improving our online ordering system. Last year we refined our CCA product pages and modified our search features to ensure that you can always find what you are looking for. You can store CCA items in a Favourites List, making it easier and quicker to repeat orders of the products you buy frequently. You can also create and amend a number of different Favourites Lists, each of which will show you the quantity of the item we have in stock. You can then add items straight from your list to the basket.

Keep on top of your paperwork FPS has also introduced several new ways to help you keep on top of your paperwork, eliminating slow and error prone manual processes. The Document Retrieval area in the Accounts section of the F:Drive has been improved. You can use this area to view and print copy invoices, credits and advice notes across multiple accounts. You can also search for documents by account number, FPS document reference, date range or your own customer reference.

These improvements aim to help you keep on top of your orders, even if you have multiple accounts, by using your main invoice account. This has access to all other child accounts in your group and also enables you to view a section which lists all outstanding invoices for the group. You can download this list in CSV format detailing all of your invoice references. Last year, for the first time, we also made it possible for you to purchase Klarius exhausts through the F:Drive at the click of a button. The VRM lookup and vehicle search functions on the F:Drive now help you find the right exhaust for your vehicle with ease. A Buyer’s Guide is also available, providing detailed application information for each part. You can even view schematic diagrams to make it easier to identify the right part quickly.

You will also find that we have transformed our warranty claims system. Now you can submit warranty claims online using eWarranty, our new digital way of doing things. The online form is much the same as its paper counterpart; however, it can be instantly submitted at the click of a button. Once this is done all parties involved in the claim can view the process of the application at every stage. A number of our major suppliers are on board and customers using the system are impressed by the benefits.

New features in October included two new buttons on the Parts Search which appear just below the Add to Basket button, on the parts search results pages. These buttons link to extra components and associated parts that you might need when fitting your exhaust purchase.

These improvements are geared towards streamlining day to day business processes, saving you valuable time, so that you can get on with running your business.

These new improvements enhance your experience with us when buying online, ensuring you always find the right product for the right fit.

These are just a few of the improvements we have brought to you throughout 2012. To make sure you are getting the most out of the electronic services available, visit our dedicated website www.fps-click.co.uk.

Start your engines! The UK’s leading remanufacturer of rotating electrics shares its insight with Vital News.

As the UK’s leading remanufacturer of rotating electrics, Remy is committed to keeping garages and bodyshops equipped with all of the latest technologies. In this way, they can begin to service vehicles effectively as soon as demand arises. The most significant and exciting technological development for the future of rotating electrics is micro-hybrid technology (i.e. stop-start).

Starter-Based Stop-Start Starter-based stop-start (SBSS) technology combines a high durability starter with a conventional alternator and can be found on all engine sizes. This technology is driven by low cost and offers a quick-to-market hybrid solution to meet EU emission laws. Vehicles fitted with SBSS systems may be starting more than 20 times per day. Consequently, starter durability is a concern on these units as the lifecycle requirement is six times higher than a conventional starter. Features of SBSS: Intelligent alternator control (IAC) optimises the alternator charging cycle by running it while the vehicle brakes, resulting in brake energy recuperation. A battery management system (BMS) maintains battery charge conditions and disables the stop-start system when the battery is under a certain level of charge. Improved performance starter (IPS) has more/longer brushes, a new bearing system, improved solenoid contacts and an improved engagement mechanism. However the overall design remains the same. Remy’s projections suggest that there could be several million stop-start, hybrid and electric passenger cars on the roads in Europe by 2015. In the last two years the majority of the vehicle manufacturers have moved to stop-start

vital news issue 29

technology. Japanese and Korean VMs have been slower to adopt stop-start but are now starting to move towards this technology more. Remy’s prediction is that stop-start may soon become as common as ABS. The new technology is concentrated on developing lighter more compact vehicle components which operate more efficiently on the road – reducing CO2 emissions and improving fuel efficiency. Basically, stop-start units use the same technology as conventional starters but they are more robust (reinforced) as they are having to start the car much more often. In order to withstand such high use, more durable components are needed. Design changes include increased brush numbers, solenoid improvements, new lever and clutch retainers and special bushing in the pinion. Remy’s aftermarket range already has several micro-hybrid stop-start units – all of which are available from FPS. This includes the stop-start starter for the BMW 1-Series and 3-Series diesel engines. This starter has also been carried over into the new shape 2012 BMW 1-Series (F20) and 3-Series (F30). Other stop-start parts currently in the range include several other BMW and Mini models as well as Alfa/Fiat, Audi and VW models. Over 20 further stop-start part numbers are currently in development.

Remy is leading the field Remy Automotive has the largest hybrid motor test facility in North America, where product durability is tested at three times the normal life expectancy of the product. This facility was recently awarded a grant of $60.2 million from the United States Department of Energy to promote business researching and developing electric vehicles and their components. Remy has matched this support by investing another $60m into this research. This money is being used to research and produce superior performing hybrid electric and electric vehicles at significantly lower costs.

How to heat up y Better quality parts are steadily driving down sales of exhaust parts, and yet Klarius believes that there are a number of ways in which factors can drive their sales back up. Vital News finds out more. Over the years, the quality of exhaust products has improved significantly, helping to extend the average life of these parts by several years. This is true of both original parts and aftermarket products. The rise in popularity of diesel, which is kinder to exhaust materials, and the reduction in the number of miles being driven are also contributing to the downward pressure on sales of exhaust parts. While this is great news for motorists, it means that garages no longer see so much simple exhaust work, which has led to a steady decline in sales over the last two decades. And yet, despite all of this, the UK’s emission control market is still a lucrative sector, worth £130 million annually. Manufacturers are bringing new cars and new technologies to market more quickly than ever before and the variety of exhaust system parts is increasing all the time. New emission regulations are a major driver of technological change and have opened the door to new sales opportunities thanks to new products such as diesel particulate filters (DPFs).

Fewer sales but more parts For the motor factor, the falling demand for exhaust parts has been complicated by a dramatic increase in part numbers. With more parts needed to service fewer applications, the factor has a dilemma: how to satisfy the commercial desire to capture every sale without tying up too much cash in slow moving stock? Exhaust components are relatively bulky items and, when it comes to CATs and DPFs, they can be high value too. In either case, you do not want to lose valuable warehouse space with slow moving products. There is a careful balance to be met when deciding between what to stock locally, how much Stock (units) 75 277 754 936 1186 1551 2185 2384 2632 2963 3507 7893

The table also shows how much space is required. The further down the table you go, the more investment and space grow out of proportion to satisfying the variety of products available, reducing the potential ROI of any stock holding. Is it worth increasing the stockholding space 10-fold just to house slow moving parts in order to offer the last 25% of available units? The answer is surely no. This is where Klarius’ active stock profiling and FPS’ same-day delivery can help. Klarius has profiled the sales of all its emission control products over recent years and continues to monitor and modify stocks of different items constantly, shifting stock profiles to accommodate changes in market demand. With fast, reliable supply by FPS providing access to over 4,000 references direct from stock, this frees you up to decide exactly how much space and investment you want to put in to return the highest yield from this large range of products. FPS receives daily deliveries from Klarius’ central warehouse and manufacturing site, which produces over 2 million exhausts every year, so supply lines are short and availability is guaranteed.

New technologies bring new opportunities Buying trends change over time as new technologies hit the aftermarket. The DPF is fast becoming a standard component on diesel vehicles because it can help vehicle manufacturers meet the Euro 5 particulate limit of and CAT sales to comparison ≥ Exhaust Exhaust Sales tostorage Storage Comparison

our exhaust profits FPS customers who use the F:Drive will now find that fitting kits for CATs and fitting recommendations for exhaust parts are automatically displayed, making it easy for your sales team to find those essential cross-sell opportunities. Simply search for your application, and when the system returns your results it will give you the option to view the associated fitting kit for your part. Both the exhaust system part and the fitting kit can be added to your basket. This new feature should save time and help you to find complete solutions when searching for exhaust systems.

Sourcing exhausts and CATs the easy way FPS carries the entire Klarius range, offering you everything from a CAT for a two year old city car, through to the exhaust system for a rare 70’s sports car. Each part is fit tested to the relevant vehicle and fully Type Approved – our competitors do not do this, so if you want a perfectly fitting exhaust part every time, you had better specify Klarius. Stocking a full exhaust range takes up valuable space

0.005g/km. As the first OEM filters are beginning to fail, the replacement market is growing rapidly. DPFs are a relatively high value item with a range of failure modes. Klarius has just extended its product range of both catalyst and DPFs. Klarius already provides around 50 Type Approved DPF references, and a similar number of Euro 4 only items to match older applications. New additions include popular references such as: Peugeot (PSA Group), BMW & Mini, Mazda, Honda, Suzuki, Jaguar and Nissan applications. You should also look out for new additions to the Euro 5 range for both filter only and combined catalyst and filter applications. Some specific applications are being highlighted where the OEM product is problematic, and replacements are needed sooner than expected. Klarius carefully monitors demand to identify which applications are likely to be ready for replacement parts. This development not only involves the specification of the product, but importantly the testing and Type Approval to ensure the important regeneration process. Furthermore, Klarius operates a “manufacture on-demand system”, frequently completing new Type Approved designs in a matter of weeks. These are produced in small batches if necessary, so flexible manufacturing can be matched to national market demand. The PSA Group and Vauxhall were among the first manufacturers to introduce this technology, and consequently they are amongst the most popular applications for DPF replacement.

Making the cross-sell easier The most cost effective way to ensure that new exhaust system components stay securely in the correct place is to use a combined fitting kit, making this a great opportunity to do a bit of cross-selling. Using the correct fitting kit ensures that the correct installation mountings are used and that the exhaust is sealed effectively. It also ensures that you adhere to the warranty conditions of the parts manufacturer, many of which state that a warranty will become void if the old fittings are not replaced.
