welcome

Inside this issue…

Note from the MD Dear Customer,

Welcome to the latest issue of Vital News, keeping you up-to-date with what is going on in the market and at FPS. It’s enjoyable to write this following a strong start to the year, with the late winter cold snap in March driving customer demand through the spring. This has helped sales of Kilen coil springs, Remy rotating electrics and calipers, and Gates thermostats are up 50%, see page 12 and discover the increasing sales opportunity available within this product area. Despite all the pressures in the economy motoring levels appear stable, with the government stats on miles driven showing a small increase in 2012 over 2011, and year on year fuel consumption is also in line with this. Within this stability however, we know that the average age of vehicles is getting older, which impacts on demand patterns. We have had a lot of internal debate recently on this topic, particularly in relation to brand positioning. This year, despite the continued squeeze on motorists’ budgets, we are seeing that quality does sell, with sales growth in many of our leading programmes, take Gates and Remy as examples. Now part of this is price, and we have reduced prices to the market over the past year to make them more competitive. However quality is also key, with many customers preferring to invest in value through strong quality programmes such as these. And of course you need to get the message out and make your customers aware of the benefits of purchasing these quality brands. Here at FPS, we are eager to support you

contributors this issue…

on this, which is why we are constantly developing strategic marketing campaigns for stockists, as well as promotional tools to help you develop sales of our same-day offerings. If you want to know more about how we can help you, talk to your local branch or FPS Representative. However, there are clearly further opportunities that we should be helping our customers realise, including the need for suitably priced parts for older vehicles where it is sensible to do so; and also for the inclusion of more than one brand within certain product groups in order to give customers the ability to offer your garage customers a choice of products to suit their own requirements. We have built our reputation on a quality offering and we are not about to change that, but in recognition of that fact that different customers have different requirements, for example due to their vehicle’s age or usage, we are introducing solutions to suit those requirements. You will already find evidence of this in our ignition coil and filtration ranges. Further range developments are planned for 2013 with new brands scheduled to launch within our braking, water pump and wheel bearing programmes.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION 3

Fuelling the market Found on every vehicle, regardless of age or fuel type, the fuel pump is an essential automotive component. Cambiare provides an overview.

high pressure that the injection system requires. There is also less fuel to cool and lubricate the pump. Even running on low fuel can accelerate the wear of the pump.

MECHANICAL FUEL PUMPS The primary reason that mechanical fuel pumps are not used in modern engines is to do with pressure and flow rate (volume). Driven by the camshaft, the mechanical pump is usually fixed to the engine block and uses the power of the engine to drive the pump. This delivers fuel to the carburettor at low pressure – around 0.2-0.3 bar (3-5 psi). It is the lack of pressure that makes mechanical fuel pumps unsuitable for today’s high pressure systems. The demise of the carburetted engine means that mechanical fuel pumps are now only found on older vehicles, predominantly pre-1995. This is therefore a shrinking, though by no means insignificant, section of the car parc. As a result, the OE manufacturers have largely pulled out of this market.

FUEL PUMP FAILURE

ELECTRONIC FUEL PUMPS Up until the late 1980s, all fuel pumps were mechanical. This all changed with the introduction of electronic fuel-injected engines. These engines operate at higher pressures and require more sophisticated injection strategies than mechanical pumps can supply. Mechanical fuel pumps are driven from a cam or lever that is driven by the engine. Electronic fuel pumps are powered by the alternator which is also driven by the engine. Electronic pumps can be balanced to match engine demand and therefore use less energy. The pump works very hard, circulating up to 44 gallons of fuel per hour (200L/hour) at pressures up to 3.5 bar (50 psi). The system is run by a DC motor which produces heat, so positioning the pump inside the tank or along the fuel line ensures that it is constantly flooded with fuel, helping to lubricate the moving parts and cool the motor to prevent overheating. There are two types of electronic fuel pump on the market: in-line and in-tank. In-line fuel pumps are installed in the fuel line, after the fuel tank. In-tank systems are located inside the fuel tank and incorporate the fuel level gauge as an integral part of the pump. In-tank pumps are by far the most common type of system. Of course, this only works if the fuel level is maintained. If the fuel level is too low, the pump has to work much harder to produce the

4 fuel pumps

The primary cause of fuel pump failure is contamination caused by water or dirt particles in the fuel. Many electric pumps incorporate a pre-filter to prevent dirt ingress. But if the filter becomes clogged, the pump will quickly overheat as it will not receive the necessary lubrication or cooling it needs from the fuel. If the pre-filter is defective or missing, debris can enter the pump, slowly accumulating inside. This can restrict the moving parts until they no longer function, causing the pump to fail. Another element that can damage the fuel pump is the presence of water in fuel. If water enters the pump it can damage the electrical parts. Over time water will rust the interior of the fuel tank. Another element is high concentrations of bio-fuel that can coat moving components.

vital news issue 31

Due to the high pressure and volume requirements of the pumps, manufacturing tolerances are extremely fine. Particles as little as 10 microns (0.01mm) can cause scratches and scoring that destroy the internal system components. The pump itself is a non-serviceable part, so damage to any of the internal system components will require the replacement of the entire unit. Attempting to fix a fuel pump could lead to contaminants entering the fuel system, leading to further costly engine repairs. It is good general practice to fit a new fuel filter when replacing the fuel pump – this will help to preserve the integrity of the whole system. A damaged fuel pump may exhibit symptoms such as engine warning light illumination and vehicle start-up failure. Drivers may also experience poor fuel economy as the pump isn’t supplying the optimum level of fuel to the injectors which can also lead to irregular idling.

CAMBIARE FUEL PUMP RANGE Cambiare’s new range of fuel pumps is composed of mechanical and electrical units. Each part is supplied with comprehensive fitting instructions and all the relevant fittings, such as strainers, gaskets, hose clamps, washers, plug & connecting wires, sleeves and connecting rubber hoses where required. Cambiare fuel pumps are supported by a 2 year or 30,000 mile warranty. All parts are available next-day, with the fastest moving references delivered same-day from your local FPS branch. Contact your local Cambiare or FPS Representative for further information, including great offers on fuel pump stock packs.

EGR VALVE RANGE EXTENSION Cambiare has recently extended its range of EGR valves and has now 147 part numbers catalogued. This range includes 97 Pierburg references as part of the catalogue offering. All Cambiare references are either OE quality or BER compliant. Both pneumatic and electric EGR valves are available. The range covers popular vehicles from marques including Ford, Mercedes, Renault and Vauxhall.

WHY DO EGR VALVES FAIL? The most common cause of failure in the EGR system is seized or carbonised EGR valves. There are several causes of this:

• S oot, carbon and oil deposits can build up on the valve causing it to stick • E xcessively high temperature in the system can damage the valve • P neumatically operated valves may be effected by faults in other vacuum system components If an EGR valve is faulty then it is important to replace rather than attempt to clean the unit. The Cambiare EGR valve range is available to order from FPS alongside the Pierburg range of 97 OE EGR valves, ensuring that the FPS range covers the needs of all customers. As with all Cambiare products, EGR valves are covered by a 2 year or 30,000 mile warranty. Pierburg products are covered by a 24 month warranty*.

Cambiare now has over 50 EGR valve references

Why do only half the job? BG Automotive talks timing chain replacement. There is a general misconception that a timing chain will last for the life of a vehicle. However, chains, sprockets and other components will stretch or wear over time, especially if the vehicle is poorly maintained. When replacing one engine timing component, it is always best practice to replace all associated parts.

The argument for replacing A snapped or stretched timing chain can cause major damage to cylinder head components in modern ‘interference’ engines, when valves and pistons can smash into each other. As well as inspecting the chain assembly for signs of wear, the owner or mechanic should listen for a change in engine note. If the engine sounds ‘rough’, it may be a sign that timing accuracy has deteriorated. Adhering to regular service intervals and inspecting the oil for excessive metal debris during oil changes is also highly recommended. Whenever changing the chain, the following must also be considered:

There are many opportunities for factors to break into the market using BGA Timing Chain Kits. Equivalent parts from OE or the dealer can be extremely expensive. The BGA Timing Chain Kit range gives the factor a huge advantage as they will have access to next-day stock at a competitive price. BGA timing chain kits contain all of the parts needed, and are available as kits, full kits, and VVT kits to suit the job and the budget.

• Kits contain chains, tensioners and guides • Full kits contain sprockets, chains, tensioners and guides • VVT Kits contain the full kit, plus VVT sprockets

Chain guides – guide arms keep the chain in line as it revolves. Worn guides cause the chain to jump from the sprockets, or slacken or loosen with destructive results. Tensioners – designed to maintain tension and prevent slack; a faulty tensioner can lead to sudden failure by creating a wave of slack that disrupts valve timing. It can even snap the chain. Sprockets – worn teeth cause the chain to jump, or even derail, compromising timing accuracy. This results in power loss and risks valve and piston ‘interference’. To ensure best practice is followed, BGA recommends replacing all associated parts when working on engine timing components.

The range currently covers over 230 kits, many of which are manufactured only by BGA and are not offered by any other supplier in the Aftermarket.

Product quality

BGA offers over 230 timing chain kit references, covering popular vehicles

Market opportunities It is not only the premium marques that are embracing this technology. Some Vauxhall, Citroën, Peugeot, VAG, Renault and Ford engines also use timing chains. In fact, 1 in 4 UK cars use a chain to drive the engine. With over 8 million vehicles fitted with timing chains, this opens up a huge opportunity for motor factors.

6 timing chains

Quality assurance processes start at the very beginning of manufacture, where parts are inspected for material, dimensional and functional performance. Parts are checked again prior to distribution, to ensure that all components match high standards for performance and durability. All BGA products are guaranteed under BGA’s comprehensive warranty scheme. BGA timing chain kits provide a convenient and reliable solution, ensuring that the job is done right first time. The complete range, covering over 2,500 applications, is available to order from FPS through your local branch, or online via the F:Drive.

ENABLING CHANGE Federal-Mogul explains how its technical partnerships with vehicle manufacturers are helping to reduce CO2 emissions and reduce fuel consumption. Federal-Mogul’s latest technologies are developed for OEMs to meet today’s emissions and economy challenges. These technologies can be broadly classified as either direct solutions or enabling solutions. A direct solution makes an immediate, direct improvement such as reducing friction or cutting component weight. Enabling solutions help designers to implement new engine strategies reliably, such as allowing the use of turbocharging to increase efficiency. Many of these technologies lead engine designers towards downsizing, creating smaller engines that produce more power per litre, burn fuel more efficiently and have lower frictional losses. Specifying the right components, from new and during repair, has never been more critical to ensure long service life. Three recent Federal-Mogul product groups embody the changing technologies within the modern engine: IROX® bearings and DuraBowl® pistons are examples of enabling solutions, while LKZ-Rings® are a direct solution.

DuraBowl® Pistons In high performance, heavily downsized diesel engines, high-pressure turbocharging and new fuelling strategies push piston temperatures beyond 400°C and cylinder pressures over 200 bar. Federal-Mogul identified that failures around the rim of conventional piston bowls in this highly aggressive environment can be traced to the presence of silicon particles in the aluminium.

DuraBowl® pistons have between four and seven times the service life of a conventional piston

By re-melting the alloy around the rim of the bowl, the silicon particles can be reduced to only one tenth of their previous size, substantially increasing the strength and durability of the piston rim. The DuraBowl® piston uses this technique to increase the service life to between four and seven times that of a conventional cast piston.

Glyco IROX® Bearings IROX® bearing technology addresses the lubrication challenges arising from the increased engine restarts of stop-start and hybrid engines, as well as the increased mechanical loads produced by heavily-boosted downsized engines and the thinner oil films generated by today’s lower viscosity oils.

LKZ-Rings® Federal-Mogul’s 2011 PACE Award-winning Goetze LKZ-Ring® is a two-piece design originally developed for highly demanding diesel applications and now also optimised for direct-injection petrol engines. Compared with conventional two-piece rings, the LKZ-Ring® reduces oil consumption by up to 50% and friction by up to 15%.

PACE award-winning LKZ-Ring® from Goetze

IROX® bearings from Glyco are designed around the needs of modern stop-start engines

It can increase the life of crankshaft surfaces and bearing shells by more than five times in the most demanding applications, and reduces friction by up to 50% compared to metallic sliding layers. IROX® is a polymer coating on the bearing shell that can withstand momentary operation without lubrication and can also carry the very high loads imposed by highly boosted engines. As well as increased impact absorption and wear resistance, it provides high thermal conductivity to keep the bearing cool.

vital news issue 31

The key to the new ring’s oil control is a “stepped” surface and taper on its contacting edge. Conventional piston rings apply equal pressure to the cylinder bore on both the up and down-strokes. LKZ-Rings® provide the required pressure to the cylinder wall on the down-stroke but significantly less on the up-stroke. This reduces frictional losses while more effectively returning oil to the oil pan rather than allowing it to enter the combustion chamber. Federal-Mogul offers the complete package for engine repairs through a group of market leading brands and technology experts: AE, Glyco, Goetze, Nural, Payen and FP Diesel, all of which are available to order from FPS.

new technology 7

BIOLOGICALLY SPEAKING UFI explains why common rail diesel engines demand high quality fuel filters.

There have always been impurities in the fuel we put in our vehicles. The fuel industries EN 590 standard requires between 5 and 7% biofuel content in diesel and limits the water content to no more than 200 ppm. However, these ratios can increase significantly due to storage issues, condensation in the tanks and non-compliance by the fuel companies. This coupled with higher specification engines that demand a cleaner burn with lower sulphur emissions, has led to cold starting issues and filters becoming clogged earlier in their lifecycle. The technical problems this causes are increasing. Modern common rail systems require a much higher flow rate, putting increased demands on the fuel system. Moreover, common rail fuel injectors cause the water particles present in the fuel to become much smaller. If the fuel is not filtered to the correct level the water can damage the fuel injectors, costing thousands of pounds in replacement. Synthetic micro-fibres of varying dimensions and porosity separate the water from the fuel. Upon separation, the water molecules join to form large droplets which fall to the bottom of the filter – also called coalescence. The filter media has a coarser structure in the inside and a finer structure towards the outside of the filter – this allows the filter to perform pre-filter and fine filtration functions, helping to prolong the life of the filter.

OUTSIDE

INSIDE

Water separation principle

The presence of biodiesel in the fuel has made the situation even more complex. Based on organic vegetable oil, biodiesel is composed of fatty acids that are not present in pure petroleum diesel. Its vegetable origin favours bacterial growth (the biodiesel is “food” for the bacteria). The presence of water in the fuel further encourages this bacterial growth. This leads to the build-up of sludge that will eventually clog the filter, and in the worst case starve the vehicle of fuel. These problems often arise when the vehicle is serviced and the original filter is replaced with a cheaper, lower quality aftermarket

8 fuel filters

filter. On the outside the filters look similar, but internally the aftermarket version does not contain the advanced filtering media that provides the necessary water separation. Ten years ago, a diesel fuel filter would typically contain a simple pleated paper element to capture major impurities and some of the water – today that just isn’t good enough! In response to these issues, vehicle manufacturers are increasingly demanding higher performing water separation filters. Although there is a higher cost in the use of these due to the specialised synthetic filtering materials such as polymers, elastomers, electronic sensors and heaters, in the long run these filters provide superior protection, giving the end- user true value. The solution for independent garages wanting to give their customers what these modern engines demand is surprisingly simple: fit an UFI filter. UFI’s patented H2O, Defender, ONE and WATER ELIMINATOR filters are designed to ensure the highest levels of water elimination from fuel – over 95% – providing the utmost protection for the engine. As a trusted partner to over 80 of the world’s leading car manufacturers, UFI Filters is the leader in this field, providing car manufacturers with effective filtration systems as original equipment. UFI’s aftermarket ranges are made to the same high standards as the original filters, providing complete protection for modern common rail diesel engines. So, don’t miss out… ask your FPS Representative about the UFI range today!

Pump it up! The beating heart of the fuel system, the fuel pump is a complex component. The experts at CR Diesel share their insight with Vital News. The common rail system is comprised of many components and sensors. However, the key components are the electronically controlled injectors and the high pressure pump.

Pressure sensor

Common rail Pressure limiter

There are four manufacturers of car common rail systems Bosch, Delphi, Denso and Siemens VDO with market share split as shown in the chart below. The CRD programme covers all four of these brands remanufactured using 100% OE parts, following authorised remanufacture programs to OE specifications all in accordance with ISO9001/2008 and are fully warranted.

Fuel filter

Solenoid injectors

Supply pump

Fuel tank

Sensors

Quality Assured These pumps are built to tolerances as small as 5 microns (smaller than a human hair) so even the slightest contamination can cause damage to the pumps and to the injectors. With these new pumps capable generating in excess of 2,000 bar the accuracy of pump build is critical for the correct operation and lifespan of the system.

A typical common rail diesel system

Common rail diesel systems: market share by manufacturer

How Does it Work? Fuel is delivered from the fuel tank via an in-tank pump and onwards to the high pressure pump. Alternatively, fuel can be drawn from the tank by a small lift pump, which is mounted on the back of the high pressure pump. In either case, the high pressure pump increases the fuel pressure and supplies it to the common rail and the injectors for delivery into the combustion chamber. All of this is managed and monitored by an electronic control unit (ECU) and various sensors around the system. The high pressure pump is the heart of the fuel system. The requirement to meet emissions legislation and the demand from drivers for more power and better fuel economy has led to a need to increase fuel pressures. This allows better atomisation of diesel. A more highly atomised delivery of fuel gives a faster, cleaner and more effective burn, resulting in more power, better fuel economy and a reduction in diesel emissions.

Quick Latin Lesson The Michelin Man is one of the most widely recognised brand symbols in the world, but do you know his real name? It’s Bibendum (Bib for short), a Latin word meaning “to drink”. The name was coined in the late 1800s thanks to a poster created by popular graphic artist O’Galup. The owners of the Michelin company were impressed by one of O’Galup’s sketches in which a bearded giant raises his tankard of beer underneath the slogan “Nunc est Bibendum” (now it is time to drink). O’Galup simply replaced the giant with the Michelin Man and the tankard with a glass full of nails and broken glass (!). The slogan stayed and the name Bibendum stuck.

These two wiper blades may look the same, but there are actually 7 subtle differences between the two. Can you spot them all?

Bib drinking the broken glass symbolises the hardiness of the Michelin rubber

TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL Gates identifies thermostats as an area of strong product growth. A prolonged period of cold weather, principally in February and March, has extended the replacement season for thermostats and caused a surge in sales. Gates is already reporting a sales rise of more than 50% in this sector compared with figures for 2012 – and 2012 was a record year! All of which is good news for Gates’ customers, coming at a time when sales of many other product ranges seem to have flat-lined.

This delivers a major saving in terms of shelf space for Gates customers, making it easier for you to supply the UK’s top selling thermostat applications.

Best known as a drive systems specialist, Gates is in fact one of Europe’s leading thermostat suppliers. Its sales forecast for the thermostat market in 2013 and beyond is continued growth as new innovations and OE trends begin to bite.

Thermostat problems When thermostats fail the results can be disastrous. The development of fail-safe technology makes overheating unlikely and most failures these days result in overcooling. This leads to:

• Poor engine performance • Increased fuel consumption • Higher emission levels Generally, there are few issues with either thermostat reliability or the installation of replacements. Component failure is usually mileage and age-related. Most drivers only become aware of a problem when cabin heater performance declines, something that is usually detected during the winter months.

Top 5 by value: Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 (D) Vauxhall Zafira 1.9 (D) Vauxhall Zafira 1.6 (P) Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 (P) BMW Compact 1.9 (P)

D: Diesel / P: Petrol

Technology and trends Gates invests heavily to ensure its product range reflects OE trends. Customers will have noticed the increasing dominance of manifold absolute pressure (MAP) technology in controlling thermostat regulation. This improves:

• Fuel efficiency • Emission control • Operational life The total number of MAP thermostats sold looks set to increase by around 10% over the next two years. Gates has also responded to a move away from the installation of regular thermostat units. The latest OE trend favours designs that feature thermostats inside housing units. Some customers will be aware that this includes housings made of lightweight plastic rather than metal. This stems from VM weight reduction policies and the need for more lightweight engines.

Profit opportunities Thermostats in housing units are the latest OE trend

This brackets thermostats as distress purchase items over a limited period: two issues that can put motor factors under pressure from a stock management perspective.

Market coverage Gates believes it has these angles covered thanks to a policy that consolidates seals and gaskets from several applications in a single box. Consequently, Gates is able to supply 93% of UK market requirements from just over 500 references.

Top five by volume: 1 Peugeot 1.1 (P) 2 Subaru WRX 2.0 (P) 3 Mitsubishi L200 2.5 (D) 4 VW Golf Plus 1.9 (D) 5 Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 (P)

Around 3% of thermostats fail each year. This represents a significant revenue stream for motor factors. Moreover, it is a revenue stream that is set to increase 15% year on year as a direct result of the move towards the production of thermostats in housing units. The Gates thermostats range is available in the UK only through FPS, and has increased by a further 36 references so far during 2013. That’s around 2.2 million more opportunities covered! TESTED FOR SUCCESS The team behind the Viper air conditioning range works hard to make sure its parts are of the highest quality.

Why do technicians choose the brand they install?

58%: Brand trust

25%: Supplier confidence 12%: Lowest price

To ensure quality, reliability and dependability of Viper compressors, products are tested against OE samples. Compressors are randomly selected from the production line and subjected to a 400 hour key life test that monitors compressor operation to gauge long-term reliability. It’s one of numerous steps that ensures product quality and dependability. Following this, product engineers put three randomly purchased compressor sample models from other manufacturers through key tests for quietness and durability. The results show that Viper compressors beat the competition hands down. High speed durability test (Viper standard to meet: 300+ hours)

Having built a successful business remanufacturing air conditioning compressors and condensers, the natural step forward for Compressortech was to develop a full range of brand new, competitively priced OE equivalent, BER compliant compressors and condensers, and so the Viper brand was launched. Carefully sourced from manufacturers that are supplying leading vehicle manufacturers, such as Volkswagen, Peugeot, Kia, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, and GM, the Viper range is OE equivalent quality at a fraction of the price. As a long established remanufacturer, the Compressortech team has the expertise to thoroughly test and evaluate all Viper branded products. This ensures that all parts are made from the correct materials and that the correct manufacturing systems and processes are adhered to. This gives customers the reassurance that they are purchasing a quality, highly-tested product. Compressortech’s team checks not only the application and build quality, but also the function of parts before they are accepted into the Viper range. The Viper range covers thousands of applications including fast sellers

Research by air conditioning experts Compressortech shows that trust is the key motivator for technicians when they are sourcing replacement parts for air conditioning systems. In a study of 100 technicians and motor factors, 58% cited brand trust as the most important factor, while 25% cited confidence in the supplier. Only 12% thought that lowest price was the main reason for their product selection.

Turn on, tune in

In-car entertainment expert Celsus helps Vital News get to grips with the switchover from Nearly 35% of all radio listening is now digital. Once this hits the 50% mark, and a 97% coverage threshold is achieved, the move towards digital switchover will officially begin. If the current rate of digital penetration continues, the Government is expected to confirm the switchover in the fourth quarter of 2013. This will begin a ramp up in media, commercial and consumer interest. A massive marketing campaign to communicate the benefits is already in full swing. In December 2011 a £10 million two year marketing programme, fronted by spoof soulman “D Love” and involving TV, social media and point of sale promotions got underway. Factors and retailers can get involved by marketing DAB* services under this increasingly familiar brand. Digital Radio UK, the agency responsible for coordinating the drive to digital, will be increasing its focus on cars this summer. They are even investigating whether the industry can offer upgrades when vehicles come in for their MOT – a strategy that you can encourage your customers to employ right now in order to get in early on an opportunity which will grow quickly. While an increasing number of new cars are being fitted with digital radios as standard, just 8% of the 35 million vehicles on UK roads are digital**. In practice, this could leave tens of millions of vehicles without any radio reception when the analogue transmitters are switched off.

Product solutions Celsus is currently applying the finishing touches to what will be a four tier digital radio product range that will be available through FPS. Entry level is a simple plug in type auxiliary digital radio. At the top end there PMT700D is a universal DAB receiver, is MediaDAB – a fully installed simply plug & play seamless solution that plays digital radio through the car’s original sound system using existing steering controls. USB upgradability effectively “future proofs” this, so traffic announcements and other new services can be added once available. Two middle range options will be available, firstly the DABMotion product, which will be launching later this year. A “hide away” interface is located in the vehicle and connects to the radio via a wireless connection. The unit is then operated via a small remote control. Performance, flexibility and a competitive price point are leading to high pre-orders already. DABMotion is expected to be available for sale from Summer 2013, well ahead of the upturn in demand the government announcement will trigger.

When this happens, and in the lead up to it, millions of drivers will find themselves in the market for a digital radio solution. This means that now is the time to start thinking about building a digital radio programme that will capture those drivers. It is also time to start building awareness with garages on just how simple and profitable digital radio fitment can be.

Benefits of digital radio The sales pitch is about choice. Major national, regional and local radio stations are broadcasting digitally, as are a host of digital only channels like Absolute Radio ’60-’00, BBC 1Xtra and 6 Music to name a few. Sound quality, ease of use and additional features (like enhanced display data and even pause/rewind functions) are also important. Equipment quality has risen sharply in recent years and prices have fallen.

Customer Support For many garages the opportunity will be an upsell at service or MOT. Later they may advertise locally. The opportunity needs nurturing now in order to capitalise fully on what will be a very fast take off period as switchover gets closer. Once garages engage with the opportunity, the key to sustainable success is training. When DAB products perform to potential, customer satisfaction follows naturally. This only happens when the right solution is sold and competently installed. Celsus is a solutions supplier that can provide you and your customers with advice and technical support. Antennae selection and placement is particularly critical with modern vehicles, even small differences in installation can significantly impact performance – and with it customer experience! Having worked with many leading brands on both product testing and development, Celsus has real expertise in these areas. A full training and customer support programme means that once you have identified garage accounts with potential, FPS and Celsus can offer support all the way as you maximise their business. The Celsus range of vehicle fitting solutions is one of the most comprehensive available today, addressing the demands of Digital Radio Integration and Smartphone integration. Celsus has invested heavily to develop this market, creating a range that covers thousands of lines for audio, entertainment, fitting accessories and more.

Manufacturing Master Class Vital News visits Klarius’ UK manufacturing plant to discover how its market leading emission control is made. Klarius claims to operate one of the most efficient automotive component development and manufacturing centres in Europe. This has been achieved through strategic investments in lean manufacturing and new production operations that have enabled Klarius to streamline processes and adapt quickly to changes in market.

Are there specific parts that you would like the Klarius team to bring to market? Tell your local Klarius Representative which parts you need or ring the help-line directly on 01538 752561.

Proudly British Today, Klarius manufactures more than 20,000 products a week right here in the UK. In recent years the company has invested heavily in new technologies to ensure that all parts are finished to the highest standards. Recent changes include bringing all manufacturing operations in-house so that everything is manufactured under one roof. Klarius’ capability for exhaust manufacture includes wire bending and laser cutting, box making (rolled and pressed), CNC tube bending and of course final assembly welding amongst other processes. Throughout the manufacturing processes, Klarius applies numerous quality checks to ensure all parts are made to the in-house designed specification. All products are made in a sturdy fixture to ensure correct fit and usability for every part. The manufacturing plant is located alongside Klarius’ Research and Development Centre and Test Track, meaning all Klarius products are not only manufactured in the UK, but also designed, developed and tested here too, including government testing and approval. Klarius is a step ahead of the UK market by offering a full range of fully Type Approved replacement exhaust parts. Type Approval ensures that replacement parts perform to the same specification as the original equipment for emissions, noise and back pressure.

New product development This year, Klarius’ Product Development Team is focusing on the top 100 requested applications – assessed through market feedback and vehicle parc analysis. This ensures that development is concentrating on references for the most popular vehicles. New product development involves developing whole systems as well as specific parts. And, as cars are becoming more electronically complex, this means working on Euro-4 emissions applications including DPFs. Recent new to range parts include the exhaust for the ever-popular Ford Transit Connect. Looking further ahead, the team is also working on developing new parts for the Toyota Prius and Suzuki Super Carry.

finishing school With over 60 years’ experience developing surface finishing solutions, who better to speak to about the challenges facing bodyshops than the experts at Farécla.

Changes in paint technology have made life increasingly tough for bodyshops. The original Two Pack Acrylic Paint systems of the 1970’s featured a high concentration of solvents, making both spraying and polishing simple. However as time passed, governments worldwide started to enforce increasingly strict environmental legislation to reduce the amount of solvents used in paint systems. Consequently, they were substituted for more solid content and various additives to ensure the paint remained easy to spray but as a side effect they became increasingly difficult to polish, culminating in today’s Ultra High Solids and Scratch Resistant Clear Coats.

The science behind Farécla compounds Farécla compounds are made from a liquid emulsion of oil, water, solvent and emulsifier mixed with solid abrasive particles. Solid elements vary in three key ways: particle size distribution, which determines the abrasive cut; the degree of calcination, this regulates the abrasive’s hardness; and oil absorption, which controls how it breaks down.

Step 1 During the painting process, imperfections appear in the paint substrate, and using abrasive discs and papers to remove them leave sand scratches on the surface as well as a dull matt finish. An abrasive compound such as G3 Paste, Advanced G3 Liquid or G6 Paste can be used to cut away microns of paint, remove scratches and restore gloss levels.

For some users, a satisfactory finish can be achieved in this first stage alone.

Step 2 In some cases, especially on darker colours, fine scratches, swirls or holograms may still be present; these can be removed with a finer product such as G10 Finishing compound. Most operatives will consider the job complete here!

During compounding, the particles break down into smoother spheres to polish out scratches and buff surfaces

The compounds contain abrasive particles that are engineered to combine both cutting and polishing into efficient, high performance systems. They start the process as large, sharp rocks which cut back the surface to remove defects and sanding marks. During compounding, the particles collide with the surface and break down into smoother, marble-like spheres to polish out scratches and buff surfaces up to a high shine. The speed at which the abrasives diminish is extremely important. Enough time is needed to ensure that the sanding marks are completely removed, yet the whole process must be complete in the fastest possible time, with no compromise to the final finish.

Compounding systems For each surface finishing scenario, a sequence of product applications is recommended to ensure the optimum results in defect removal, finishing and gloss enhancement.

Step 3 As an optional final step, the user has a choice between a glaze or wax based product for the ultimate showroom shine and clarity of finish. Applicator Pads It is best practice to use the recommended applicator for each compound. With compounds and pads developed in tandem, together they provide the optimum results; in Glaze & Wax Top fact, using our products in this way has proven to boost performance by 25% as well as improve other factors such as ease of use and efficiency.
