Leadership
Makes The Future
Happen
A visit with Steve Tanner, Chairman of IFRANA, and Chairman and CEO of Arylessence. Steve Tanner, Chairman, IFRANA
It was like a page torn from a Tom Clancy novel. At a
remote location in Germany, at the height of the Cold War, Steve Tanner, the commander of a ballistic missile battery received highly classified orders to prepare his nucleararmed weapons for action. Potentially, it was the end of Europe as we know it. As the minutes ticked by, he wondered what they would see first – the blinding white flash of a nuclear detonation in Europe. Or the electronic signal to fire in retaliation. But neither happened. Instead of the order to launch missiles, his troops were ordered to stand down. “That was the closest we ever came to action in the Cold War,” recalled Tanner. “At the time, nobody knew about that incident. Today, what the world remembers is the joy and excitement of the Berlin wall coming down. Personally, I much prefer those images of celebration, seeing crowds of young people coming together and a Europe reunited.” Sitting in his wood-paneled office in Marietta, Georgia, just north of Atlanta, Tanner remembers his long journey to IFRANA and to Arylessence, his family business, now one of the fastest-growing fragrance companies in the U.S. Amid antique French floral lithographs and mementos from his long career, we asked him about the factors that shaped his life. “In the military, you learn how to study a situation, set your objectives, and develop strategies and plans to achieve
16
FRAGRANCE NOTES WINTER 2016
them,” Tanner says. “You also learn about teamwork. Putting teams together, motivating them, and supporting them – that’s what leadership is all about. If you want to achieve any kind of success, everything starts with leadership.” While he never mentions his Bronze Star for Valor for heroism in combat, or his Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster for meritorious conduct on the battlefield, the lessons of leadership meant everything to the young officer. What he learned is that leaders must lead everyone in the organization. What really excites me is that everyone in our company is involved in what our creative leaders do. We achieve success because we help everyone work together to make success happen.” That success, Tanner points out, is not about his company; it’s always about his customers. If Arylessence moves forward, he says, it’s because his valued customers – whom he describes as his friends – have achieved success that matters to them. That’s the same attitude he works to bring to IFRANA. As the head of a U.S.-based business, Tanner is in a unique position to promote the IFRANA mission. “We work very hard to promote our industry and protect the interests of fragrance manufacturers and customers, big and small,” Tanner says. “We are achieving success and key lawmakers know who we are. We can also be proud that mid-sized U.S. firms in every corner of our industry take our mission seriously. If we don’t protect our industry, nobody else will.”
Underpinning that success is highly respected fragrance research conducted by the Research Institute of Fragrance Materials (RIFM), headquartered in New Jersey. Tanner serves as board member and Secretary of the organization. Extending leadership outside the fragrance industry, Tanner has made a point of connecting with allied organizations, such as the Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA) and the American Cleaning Institute (ACI), on whose boards he has served. “These are the people who use our products,” Tanner says. “Our interests are the same as theirs. Working together is how we make change happen.” At Arylessence, the family business he joined in 1986, Tanner is respected as a hands-on leader. He has a business management degree and an expert understanding of fragrance chemistry. Growing a company that puts customers first is his major priority. He can achieve that, he says, because Arylessence people make it happen.

“We have extraordinary capability and expertise in every part of our company,” Tanner notes. “We are creative. We innovate. We also have extraordinary diversity at every level, including people of many different nationalities and ethnic backgrounds. Over 50 percent of our people in leadership positions are women; and the vast majority of our creative, technical, and scientific positions are also held by women. This is what makes our company strong.”
Education
Preparing for the future, Tanner makes a point of supporting local schools and institutions that pursue a ‘STEAM’ agenda, promoting science, technology, engineering, artistry, and mathematics. Currently, the Arylessence head of evaluation is hosting a group of minority students who are learning that science is ‘cool’ by discovering fragrance, learning how to ‘smell’, and developing original fragranced products. Tanner himself is on the advisory board of the Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University.
Two children, daughter Cynthia, and son Bret,
As well as bringing people in, the idea of ‘giving back’ is equally important to Tanner and his wife Gail. Together, they founded the Arylessence Foundation, which supports autism research as well as families dealing with autism. “Those of us who have received so much in life have a responsibility to lead and guide and encourage others,” Tanner says. “When people respond to those opportunities, nothing is more rewarding.”

A FAMILY BUSINESS In the great tradition of the fragrance industry, Arylessence is a family business, founded in 1977 by industrial chemist Lee Tanner, Steve’s brother. Today, Cynthia Reichard, Steve’s daughter, and his son Bret Tanner share leadership responsibilities. As Executive Vice President, Cynthia heads perfumery, evaluation, marketing, client relations, and customer service. TSCA Modernization
T he “Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act was signed into law on June 22, 2016, providing the first significant amendment to the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) since its establishment in 1976. IFRANA was actively engaged with legislators throughout the process. Regulatory implementation of the new law is well underway at the EPA, with many looming statutory deadlines for rulemaking activities. Much of the focus of the legislation is on prioritization and evaluation of existing chemicals, or those already listed on the TSCA Inventory. EPA also has expanded authority to gather information on both new and existing substances. IFRANA is working closely with other impacted trades to participate in the regulatory process and provide feedback to the EPA regarding areas that will impact the fragrance industry.

Canadian Implementation of
GHS
IFRANA members are gearing up for Canada’s implementation of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) through the recent update to the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS 2015). The updated WHMIS 2015 has eliminated the previous exemption for fragrance & flavor component disclosure, and the new regulations come into force for manufacturers and importers on June 1, 2017. IFRANA has provided feedback through the US-Canada Regulatory Cooperation Council regarding the significant impact that the removal of this exemption will have on the fragrance industry. We continue to stay engaged on this issue and will provide updates as further guidance is developed.
