EDITORS’ LETTER texture issue

Summer is a time to stock up on what we’ve been missing, from new products to new projects. The first issue of Fraise is filled, sometimes in unlikely ways, with texture. The designer Erin Adams (pg 14) has recently started a line of surfaces made from recycled materials to add to her already impressive collection of tile designs. Fashion designers have also taken cues from texture in the past couple seasons, seen in runway shows from local ToGo fashion show to White House Black Market, both Albuquerque shows this year, to the International 2010 collection of Viktor & Rolf. Inspiration from the asymmetrical tulle dresses shown at Viktor & Rolf can be seen toned down in Forever 21 dancer skirts (club soda pg 27). Having texture as the theme of the issue, we were compelled to look critically at some of the most basic items, from a chair (droog pg 7, house 1 pg 19) to a skateboard design (Kenji Kondo pg 11). Enjoy the issue.

The Highline in New York City is a common attraction built on an elevated freight train railway. Located in Manhattan, the 1930始s structure has been renovated and designed into a public elevated park. The landscaping mimics the natural growth of the area after the train was removed in the 1960始s. Plants were chosen for their textures and sustainability.

WOULD YOU LIKE MILK WITH THAT? An attractive display of glass milk bottles is placed hanging from stainless steel rods in rows of 3 by 4, inspired by the arrangement of old fashioned Dutch milk crates. Created by Tejo Remy for Droog, MILK BOTTLE LAMP exudes a casual elegance. We wonder, however, whether the lamp hovering just above the floor and kids/pets are really the smartest combination.

Droog The Dutch design house hosts simple yet clever objects to function in the home XS A signature design of Droog, CHEST OF DRAWERS, now comes in extra small. This eclectic bundle of drawers is bound to gain compliments from any visitor. Tejo Remy.

RAG CHAIR RAG CHAIR, by Tejo Remy for Droog, is both comfortable and design-conscious. A single of these chairs is made from 15 bags of recycled rags with an option for the user to add on. Oh, and did we mention that each one is completely unique?

TABLECLOTH WITH BOWL This design literally fuses a simple bowl shape with the vinyl tablecloth to create something new. This could certainly become a design classic in reinvented place settings - but what happens when someone asks you to pass the salad? Saar Oosterhof

Ben Forgey is globally recognized for his skill to mix rustic and modern materials, creating ultra sleek furniture and artwork. Forgey’s Ghost Chair collection, constructed of plexiglass and driftwood, is displayed in Albuquerque’s local high design business [The A Store]. Fraise magazine met Ben Forgey at the Range Cafe in Bernalillo, New Mexico, where we discussed his thought process in design. The furniture in the cafe was handcrafted by Ben- each piece directed with unique inspiration. As we walked to his studio, Ben explained how he works as a designer, creating art and furniture with influence from New Mexico.

Kenji Kondo collaborates with four other designers to run the FabLabAbq. About a year ago, the FabLab was created to help product designers take their designs to prototype and eventually the market. While working under the guidance of architect Antoine Predock, Kondo was introduced to laser cutting machines. FabLab is made unique from any other design project in Albuquerque by the machines that cut, etch, and shape simple materials for prototyping into models and products. Soap dishes, lights, sandals, vases, jewelry, and furniture are among the wide range of products that can be produced at FabLab. As you walk into the studio, a wall covered in FabLab始s projects quickly give the viewer an insight to the work involved in creating the products. Kenji explained the various machines, allowing Fraise to get a sense of how business easily translates into successful design. Erin Adams has always shied away from the idea of being an artist. Rather, she finds herself using science in the context of design, “taking products where they havenʼt been before.” Her beautifully crafted walls of color, texture, shining tiles, and recycled materials look like pieces of art, but design is easily seen as the focus. The showroom in Albuquerque, a construction of vibrant orange walls and glass windows, sticks out among the starker facades on Fourth Street.

House 1 CHAIRSDESIGNRESTORE

An all-white IKEA furnished home gives the impression of modernism but in order to capture the idea of modern, we need to turn to the 1960’s. A new architecture revolution started- wall to wall windows, courtyards, and an overload of straight edges

Everything about this house, from the slanted wood ceilings to the open back patio, the fifteen foot brick fireplace, and the courtyard captured in glass, supports the idea of modernism. It is the classic and clean lines that drew Alfredo Aragon, Kamilla Venner, and Calista Aragon to the house. Many attributes to the structure can be seen repeated in newer

architecture although the structure was originally built several decades ago. It seems that architects today still take inspiration from houses like these to create what is now considered modern. The family adds another element of modernism to the home with interior design. Alfredo Aragon sources designer furniture that has been forgotten or put out of use and resurfaces them to create fresh pieces

that can once again be used. Because of this, the rooms are full of classic furnishings and works-in progress. The office floor is covered in various Eames Chair shells, while the window overlooking the back patio frames half a dozen chair legs and stands. left: bedroom overlooking the garden right: Indian elephant hamper and the bedroom’s dressing area 15

House 1 CHAIRSDESIGNRESTORE A collection of Eames furniture might surprise a design conscious viewer, but when one walks into a room and is surrounded not only Eames chairs but a museumsworth of other designers, the word collection simply falls short. A 1968 Eero Aarnio Bubble Chair hangs, barely surfacing the floor. A white cotton Butterfly Chair from the 20’s sits in the corner of the guest room. The office houses a small group of Bertoia Side Chairs while a set of Philippe Starck plexiglass seats surround the dining room table.

House 2 LIGHTINTERIORDESIGN-

/ Modern Renovation

LPA by Sam Sterling Architecture With cut-out walls like a geometrical game of peek-a-boo and floor to ceiling windows, a sense of light and spaciousness fills LPA (Lobo Place Addition). Each part of the house functions by itself, an individual use and feeling for the room, despite the open floor plan. The kitchen is the central part of the addition- both adults are cooks- and the sweeping windows are positioned to get the best view of the Sandia Mountains. Clever touches make the design equal parts form and function. These features include a chalkboard shelving system adjacent to the fridge that is perfect for jotting down grocery lists and a wall made of homasote that divides the living room from the back bedrooms. The homasote wall displays an ever-changing gallery of the couple’s daughter’s art. No doubt inspired by the family’s recent addition, 3 year-old Julianna spent the morning Fraise visited LPA drawing “blueprints.”

House 2 The natural patina of light wood cupboards, chairs, and window trim contrast with the smooth white walls that turn in unusual but constant right angles. Frosted windows down the hallway offer privacy to the master bathroom’s tub and tiled shower, while the L-shape of the house allows a sliver of the bedroom and hallway to be seen through the windows and across the garden. Every material of this house adds up with contrast and function suited to a family with a young child. A miniature easel sits overlooking the back yard for Julianna to draw and paint and because its position is visible from both the kitchen and living room, a parent can always keep a watchful eye out. This set-up is one aspect of many that makes LPA kid-friendly. (Opposite page) clockwise from top: view of the dining area, main bathroom, Julianna in her bedroom, the dining table and chairs (This page) clockwise from top left: dining table chair and a smaller red plastic chair with easel and kitchen cabinets, Julianna with a drawing running in the hallway, frosted glass cutout and sliding door closets on the way to the master bedroom

Service In the 21st century Terrapin Frazier The quality of customer service has gradually deteriorated over the last 50 years. We are quickly losing sight of a time when groceries were delivered, the milk man dropped milk on the porch, newspaper boys made rounds in the morning, and you could trust the ice cream man. Now we have Wal-Mart, newspapers are delivered by trucks, and milk men are all but extinct. It seems that personal relationships have lost much of their value in regard to business interactions. Somewhere around the time before costumer service was lousy and impersonal, there was a story that most businesses regarded as an exemplar. Over time, the story has trickled down through many mouths and ears, but I heard it something like this- an old woman had become gravely confused, and walked into Nordstrom’s (a clothing oriented department store) set on returning two mildly used snow tires. She approached the customer service desk and placed the tires on the counter. The employee behind the desk realized the woman’s mistake, but graciously gave her a refund for the tires anyway.
