WELCOME WELCOME TO THE FESTIVAL Welcome to this year's International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival ' where over 1 00 films and videotapes from around the world will be screened over ten days at the Castro Theatre, the Roxie Cinema and the Eye Gallery. This year we welcome to the Festival pro gramming staff Annette Forster, a leading authority on lesbian and feminist film and video.. As Guest Curator for the 1 99 1 Festival, Annette has assembled a fascinating collection of programs exploring a wide range of issues and topics of interest to the lesbian community. New feature films this year range from the pan sexual comedy of Monika Treut's MY FATHER IS COM· ING to Derek Jarman's visual masterpiece THE GAR DEN. Documentaries are highlighted by two new

feature-length works on AIDS activism, OVER OUR DEAD BODIES by Britain's Stuart Marshall and VOIC ES FROM THE FRONT by New York's Testing the Lim its Collective. We also welcome Eastern Europe's first documentary on homosexuality, FORBIDDEN LOVE from Czechoslovakia. Some of the most daring and intriguing work of past Festivals comes from the makers of short films, a medium free of big budgets a nd the standard 90 minute running time. This year is no exception, and we are highlighting one of the best collections of shorts in years with a special evening program of new

works by gay filmmakers from the US, Cnada and Great Britain. Other outstanding short films can be seen preceding many of the feature film programs throughout the Festival. At first glance you may notice somethin missing from the video program: Out on Tuesday, the popular series from Channel Four in London. Do not despair, 'this season the series i being broadcast later in the year, and although we do not have the complete series to offer you, we have sprinkled throughout our video programs several segments which have been completed in time for the Festival. Also in our video programs, you will find several works representing the latest in accessible, low-tech videography, the Fisher Price pixelvision camerp. At a price of arou!1d $99.95, this "toy" has been quickly embraced by independent lesbian and gay artists as a new and readily accessi ble form for video production. Finally, we dedicate this year's Festival to film historian Vito Russo, the spiritual founder of this festi· val and every lesbian and gay film festival throughout the world. His annual presence at this festival, on stage and in the audience, will be sorely missed. We hope that you will enjoy this year's Festival, finding works that make you laugh and cry, angry and aroused, but most of all-proud. Michael Lumpkin Festival D irector

WHAT IS A LESBIAN FILM? ''What is a lesbian film?," the lesbian community often asks. My answer is as complex as your question. Some films are lesbian without being "about" lesbians. Some lesbian filmmakers make lesbian films, others make other films. And some films are not lesbian -even though they feature a lesbian character. I cannot give an obiective guideline. Some lesbian films have been made but many more will never exist. Problems with funding and distribution are well known but are not the only reasons for the lack of lesbian specificity on celluloid. What do you imagine when you say "lesbian fi lm?" Ask 4 dykes and you'll get 4 different films. Acknowledging diversity is powerful, so stand by it. For 15 years, the San Francisco International Les bian and Gay Film Festival has annually offe'red an overview of films and videos that have actually been made. Look through the program book. As usual there are 'a handful of new features related to ongo ing debates in the lesbian community, then there is a retrospective of outstanding work by Elfi Mikesch, a special program on Su Friedrich, and several films on Catholic iconography. And last but certainly I')ot least, I direct your attel)tion to the great variety of short films and videos that represent the diversity of our lives in a bold and uncensored way. VOICES FROM THE FRONT In New York City, a . distraught activist confronts the mayor with a story of a friend who languished on a cot in an emergency room hallway for nine days, only , to die 48 hours after leaving the hospital. A woman is interviewed during a rally to stop the closing of a hos pital in Harlem, a section of the city disproportionately affected by AIDS. In 1 988, thousands of activists from across the country hold the Food and Drug Admini stration under siege demanding speedier drug ap proval. In 1 990 they converge again, this time on the National Institutes of Health, calling for a more equi table clinical trial system and expanded ' research into new drugs and treatment. VOICES FROM THE FRONT, the first feature-length document, ary to comprehen sively cover the AIDS activist movement in America, makes clear the emotional and pol itica l effects of community activism using the voices of those directly engaged. It's a powerful distillation of pictures and words from events organized to change public con sciousness, expose profiteering by pharmaceutical companies, and challenge government inaction and neglect concerning AIDS. As the late Vito Russo says in the tape, "We're going to fundamentally change the health care system in this country ... I don't think Robert Hawk it's stoppable now." Kathe and Traute live in a home for the elderly in Hamburg, Germany. Their assistants do the best they can to meet the needs of the old people whose reality is in the past. Some feel extremely lonely and most are tired of life and of their bodies that seem to give them nothing but trouble. Kathe and Traute, however, are different: they enjoy the tenderness and intimacy they shqre. The rhythm of the film is drawn from their conversations with each other and with their helper, Barbara. They speak as if they were dreaming, not bothered by what happens outside of their minds. Kathe speaks about memories, death, and her inten tion to "move from an outerly to an innerly directed vitality," which she calls reading what has never been' written. Besides this liberating detachment - this state of both euphoria and melancholy - the film is about the concerns of those who take care of the elderly. The toughest aspect of their work is dealing with the ruthless unhappiness which is expressed uninhibitedly and which can only be resolved by death . WHAT SHALL WE DO WITHOUT DEATH was shot as a docu mentary and edited as a fiction fi lm. Through this technique Elfi Mikesch renders an extraordinarily intense, yet warm impression of the joy and the sor AF row that comes with old age.
