We proudly open this year's Festival with the West Coast Premiere of Chery 1 Dunye's The Watermelon Woman. Over the years we have screened many of Dunye's short films, thus we are very excited to open this year with her award-winning debut feature film. This is just the first of 16 lesbian features we will be screening including Everything Relative, Bound, Female Perversions and Work in addition to a large number of excit ing lesbian produced shorts and documen taries. From lesbians taking on the mob to renaissance midwives to Russian dykes in prison, this year's films show the true diver sity of our vast lesbian community. And for the first time in this Festival's history our Sneak Preview will be a provocative new film from a lesbian director.

For twenty years we've been bringing new and rare works to Bay Area audiences; our

A .film filled with history, romance, and a really great riot, there's no better way to cap off our celebration and send us off into our third decade. This year's Festival is also our most interna tional-Festival ever with twenty-five nations represented. 53,000. Our ambition is to

showcase the best and most diverse work by or about lesbians and gay men.

In addition to the Festival, Frameline also presents:

FILM a VIDEO DISTRIBUTION

This year we had an encouraging number of works made by, for and featuring gay and lesbian youth. Queer Kids On The Block is a program featuring short films made by queer kids about queer kids. While young teens dealing with the often complex issues of coming out are featured in Sebastian, The Toilers and the Wayfarers, and Like Grains of Sand; a range of issues are explored in many other Festival films. And then there's our "Big Chill" night at the Festival (Tuesday, June 25) with both a les bian and a gay version of thirty-something friends spending the weekend together for a little processing and mUlti-coupling.

e are very proud to be able to present to you Cheryl Dunye's debut feature film The Watermelon Woman. Winner of the Teddy Award from the Berlin Film Festival and recipient of Frameline's Completion Fund Award, this is one of the first (openly acknowledged) feature films by a black lesbian. Set in present day Philadelphia, The Watermelon Woman is the story of Cheryl (played by the director herselt), an aspirng filmmaker working "temporarily" as a video store clerk with her best friend, the quick-witted Tamara (Valerie Walker). Obsessed with a mammie character actress from the 1930' s, Cheryl decides to make a documentary about this elu sive woman who is known only as "The Watermelon Woman." She soon discovers that her real name is Fae Richards and that she was probably a lesbian living in the Philadelphia area. As her documentary begins to come together, Cheryl experiences an upheaval in her personal life. She finds herself falling for Diana, a whiter-than-white rich girl (played by Go -

8

Fish's Guin Turner) and receiving a lot of flack from her friend Tamara. As she explores the history f "The Watermelon Woman", Cheryl begins to question her own identity. Her relationship with Diana and her interactions with the gay and black communities all become sub ject to her constant re-evaluation of her life and actions. The Watermelon Woman is like a film within a film, with many parts being played by popular black, lesbian, gay and Jeminist acade mics such as Michelle Wallace, Douglas Crimp, Cheryle Clarke and a not-to-be-missed perfor mance by Camille Paglia. Cheryl Dunye's The Watermelon Woman is quite an accomplish ment, both hilarious and provocative. It is a film certain to keep us contemplating the subtle com plexities of race, gender and romance in the 90's for some time to come. The Watermelon Woman d i r. C heryl Dunye 1996

exaggerated, misleading, and propagandistic approach of that anti-gay diatribe, All God's Children takes the high road by assuming a mod erate tone, ensuring its effective appeal to one of its primary audiences - mainstream, churchgo ing African Americans. By avoiding hysterical melodrama, Children persuasively refutes the misinformation propagated by the religious right in their homophobic crusades and plays directly to the egalitarian principles of most African Americans. Prominent members of black politi cal, intellectual, and religious communities defend the struggle of lesbian/gay people for equal rights, favorably 'comparing it to the civil rights movement imd the ongoing struggle for . n Joceyln Taylor's new video, Bodily Functions, she uses a naked woman's body as metaphor to explore the realms of desire, black lesbian identity, and the body as a source of empowerment and discovery. Remembering Wei Vi-fang, Remembering Myself is Yvonne Welbon's autobiographical

documentary about her experiences as an African American woman living in Taiwan for six years. Using a narrative created through dialogue, in' English and Chinese between herself and her Chinese persona, Welbon's documentary examines her discov eries in a country free of American racism. Recreations, presented through memories, historical documents, photographs, and video and film footage move through her family's historical home in Honduras to Chicago to Taiwan-creating intersections between Latin American, African American and Chinese cultures. Body Of A Poet is a lush and beautiful meditation on the life and work of Audre Lorde. Sonali Fernando's film IS an imaginary biography of the lesbian, feminist, professor, mother, visionary and 'warrior poet' who died of breast cancer in 1992. Embracing the subjectivity and desire with which we view our forebears, the film medi tates on those moments in a life lived with passion that steel the political will and irradi ate the poetic consciousness. No one's lives have been more affected by this than the nubile provincial boys who move to the city to make a better life for themselves. They start "making a buck" eas ily enough. Many of their stories sound the same. They find their way to a video arcade, a train station: spots where older men and wealthy men go to find young boys. , Inevitably many of these boys begin working for directors of child porn flicks. One such director - a man named Pavel - gives a tour of the set of one of his movies on a day when he's shooting. While he's filming the boys, he also introduces us to his other pro fession. He's a police coroner, an occupation that reveals all the secrets of the body. His story of the way he treats the boys, the way he deals with AIDS, the amount of money he makes - his story differs from the stories we hear from the boys. If the Festival's entries are any indication, 1996 was the year when lesbians and gay men went to the country to sort out their problems. Everything Relative tells of a very funny reunion of lesbian couples in a country horny. And Boyfriends is a sort of rural Boys in the Band. This British comedy depicts three troubled couples who spend three days together cooking, talking about relation ships, and sleeping around. HOTEL REX They' ve all got problems: Will is a social worker who wants to sleep with a boy he used to counsel - again. Matt is a hopeless romantic who likes the music at the beginning of newscasts and wants semi interested Owen to move in with him. And Paul is blowing his smoke into Ben's pre cious plants, the ones Ben complains to when Paul is a jerk. The moment all six arrive at a Paul's brother's country house to celebrate Paul's birthday, things fall apart. Don't blink, or you may miss another sexual pairing.

Boyfriends is witty, poignant, and very true to life. The characters banter and fight and make up and throughout it all are drawn with depth and compassion. Nobody has all the right answers, but everybody has some of them. It's no fairy tale, but offers hope in the end: with some hard work and a sense of humor, gay men can maintain loving rela tionships with each other.

In all the progres sive responses to "family values" rhetoric, there seem to be two approaches . One rejects the family for its imperfections . ailed as the lesbian Big Chill, Sharon Pollack's feature debut Everything Relative is actually a far cry from the 80 's Yuppie get-together fil m . Pollack's film chronicles the rocky reunion of a group of women (all lesbians - except for one) who went to school together and performed in a political theatre group during the 70 's . When the only long-standing couple out of the bunch have a baby, the friends reunite for the Bris and decide to spend the weekend at one of their old haunts , a secluded country house in Northampton. In between the softball L. ______ ¢ _ :a_ ro_ "" ...J ... games . and skinnydipping at the lake, there's a lot of process ing to catch up on, not to mention romances to be rekindled. New moms Katie and Vick seem happily married, but one of them still can' t seem to make it out of the closet even with the baby in tow. Then there's Josie, the writer in recovery, Who's still in love with Maria, whos just lost her kids to her ex-hus band. Gina, a former hooker who's now a successful singer in Hollywood, has always had a thing for stuntwoman Luce, who's dat ing baby dyke Candy, a 20-someth ing investment banker who never had to go through "coming out." And let's not forget Sarah , the straight girl who's been trying to get pregnant and is actually jealous of the lesbian moms. L al portrayal of a family.

Through a series of conversations and tele phone discussions , Walton reveals her fami ly's history while uncovering the value it has for her. While her sister remains close, Walton hasn't seen her father in fifteen years . Her brother insists that both the father and the lesbian daughter shouldn 't try to change one another. But how does the conservatism of father, sister or aunt impact on a one's own political convictions? How do you trust a person who seems to contradict what you believe in? Why do blood and "connections" sometimes seem to have more in common than the lesbian or gay child's experience proves? In this documentary values may mean more than ethics. emale Perversions is a fascinating interplay

F of characters, imagery, and ideas as enacted

and realized by a superb cast and multi-talented production team . Beautifully constructed and imaginatively conceived, this debut film by Susan Streitfeld rides the crest of a brilliant cen tral performance by Tilda Swinton (Orlando) and is a powerfully rich exploration of gender, sexuality, identity, and self-realization. On one level, the story concerns Eve (Swinton), a dynamic powerhouse of a district attorney, fresh from an impressive courtroom A CHANDaN victory over a sleazy business man and on the verge of her greatest triumph, a governor's appointment as a judge. But Eve, as we quickly discover, is any thing but the fully confident professional woman she seems. Instead she is plagued by doubt and neurosis. Alternately domineering and submis sive, she casts about for self-vindication and approval. Meanwhile her sister Madelyn (Amy Madigan), is even more screwed up, about to get her doctor ate, but a victim of her compulsion to steal wan tonly and her envy of Eve. When Maddy's klep tomania lands her in a small-town jail, Eve attempts a rescue, and ensuing events create a vehicle for depicting and questioning a broad spectrum of personal , familial, and social ten sions. A finely envisioned work that is serious in the best sense, Female Perversions is more than an archetypical journey of discovery and change. It's a beautifully designed meditation on femi nine and feminist obsession and the patriarchal repression that producs it. Visually captivating and fully engrossing, this is the kind of intelli gent filmmaking that is all too rare in America. With a trio of memorable supporting perfor mances by Karen Sillas, Laila Robins, and Dale Shuger, Female Perversions should not be missed. - Geoffrey Gilmore, Sundance Film Festival

The spirit, skill and daring of women ranch hands and rodeo performers is recorded in "I'll 'Ride That Horse!" in which archival stills, old newsreels and contemporary rodeo footage are combined with interviews with extraordinary women who worked the Montana rodeo circuit between the 1 920's and the 1 950's . his first feature-length documentary on

T Edward D. Wood, Jr. explores just who

this man was . He made only five movies. Some say they weren't very good. But Ed Wood is more well known today than other, more famous filmmakers who were his con temporaries . His films are now very popular, and his work has been accorded a retrospec tive at the Museum of Modem Art in New York. But who was Edward D. Wood, Jr.? Was he the World War II Marine and war r---------, hero who wore ladies' underwear at the Battle of Tarawa? Was he the dashing and hand some man who secretly was a H E A 0 LIN E 5 transvestite, attracting the most beautiful starlets in Hollywood to be his lovers? Or was he the Orson Welles of low budget filmmaking who discovered muscle man Steve Reeves and befriended Bela Lugosi, creating films for him when no one else would hire him? Perhaps no one else in the history of Hollywood has had their work so maligned and misunderstood. Finally, we hear those who worked with Wood to realize his VISIon, including Maila Nurmi ("Vampira"), Dolores Fuller, Paul Marco ("Kelton the Cop") and the Reverend Doctor Lynn Lemon. On the same program , Andy Warhol is a brief look at the family Andy left behind in Pittsburgh.

It seems that Oliver (Sam Bould, achingly vulnerable in his portrayal) is just another lit tle boy who rides his bike on the Commons when he shouldn't and lies occasionally to get himself out of trouble . One night he shows up at his father's house, breathless and with a bad cut over his eye. His father, Martyn , who is gay and lives with his lover, Tom , takes him to the hospital and then reluc • tantly returns him to his mother, UNITED Hannah, and her new boyfriend, AIRLINES Frank. Shortly after, Oliver badly hurts his hand and tells his father that he accidenta,l ly shut it in a car door. Martyn becomes suspicious abou!· these injuries but finds that his investigations and subsequent allegations are hindered by the social realities of his homosexuality, by legal bureaucracy, and by Hannah's heartbreaking denial . to date, Bruce La Bruce (No Skin OtT My Ass, Super 8 112) takes his filmmaking to a completely new level. With noted photogra pher Rick Castro on board as co-director, Hustler White takes you on a wild ride along the streets of Santa Monica Boulevard (the boy toy walk of fame) as only these two can show it to you , We enter this deluded utopian fantasy hot on the trail (or tail) of aV '-=--J Monti , the street L...wise , yet clumsy, accident-prone hustler, played by Tony Ward. Perhaps best known for his work alongside Madonna in the "Justify My Love" and "Cherish" videos and as a model on scores of magazine covers , Tony has abandoned the catwalk temporarily to create a role that only Joe Dallesandro in his prime could have played. Along with Bruce and an array of underground igni tanes and porn divas , we track Monti through his typical routine of various sordid and bizarre encounters with hustlers, johns, and pornographers .

Skillfully incorporating archival material ,

revealing verite footage and clips from his own work, this gripping documentary chronicles the life and work of the black gay filmmaker Marlon Riggs . Often called "the whipping-boy of the Right," Riggs was most well known for fighting censorship battles resulting from his landmark 1989 fi lm Tongues Untied , but I Shall Not Be Removed also shows Riggs as an innovative d)d... teacher, a prolific dOCll. . mentanan , and a gay man eOlHlHIUIIUf, fighting AIDS , More than 50 hours of footage was shot for this docu mentary during the last two years of Riggs 's life. It has been woven into a moving tribute to a remarkable artist and human being .

he issues of sexual identity, gender, addiction , and AIDS are explored in this film as they directly touch our lives . Through all our experiences, my photogra phy has served as a way to feel grounded in chaos, to pay homage to the beauty of my friends, and to keep the memory of the people I N L-.. -I loved . More recently, these .same pictures rave become a chroI}icle of loss and have shown me how little pho tography can actually preserve. Madagascar Skin

Marble Ass

Wed J u n e 26 9:00pm VIC $ 7 626 I hris Newby's Madagascar Skin begins by pushing a cliche until it explodes: a

gay bar with muscles and semi-nudity,

everyone beautiful, everyone joyfully danc ing. Into this throng walks Harry, a young man alienated because of a huge birthmark on his face in the shape of Madagascar. In the dark, he joins some sex play, but when the lights go on he is rejected: so much for the politically correct empathy of marginals for their brothers. Harry takes off to the sea, where he intends to begin again, away from the threat of rejec tion. On the beach he finds an overturned bucket, the tide rising towards it . The bucket covers Flint, who is a much older, tattoo covered, apparently heterosexual man brim ming with stories of women and work in high scaffolding. The two have nothing in common, yet slowly they fall in love - and not the platonic variety. Though this may all sound terribly dire, the film itself is hilari ous; just because you're serious doesn't mean you can't laugh - a lot . - David Overbey, Toronto International Film Festival Madagascar Skin dir. short skirts and the possibility of being held by someone she loves. She hates heavy metal and big egos. Phantom Pain is a gently comic look at Kristy's confusing l ife which downplays the usual issues of gender identi ty: Kristy has doubts about the final , surgical solution to her gender-quest but transexuality is among the least of her trouble s . Listless and with a face soured by a constant look of resignation, Kristy (her adopted name comes from her fondness for Kristy McNichols "when she was on Family") , just can't figure out what to do with herself. Male or female? Actress or prostitute? The streets or a white picket fence? Adrift in Los Angeles, she allows the people in her life, from her bitter wheelchair-bound roommate to a series of nasty male tricks, to run her ragged. When a professor of sexology asks her to star in a film about a transexual prostitute, Kristy thinks she may have finally found some

their scars. But then to get the same boys to talk

about what gets their Peckers Rising? Well , Texan filmmaker Heyd Fontenot got just that, and

that Kristy's confession that Carrie Fisher's performance in Star Wars inspired her to become an actress may seem like a serious revelation. But not even Kristy can say that with a straight face.

he way Troy (boyishly hunky Paul from Strictly Ballroom) remembers it, the day he found out that he was mY-positive was the worst day of his life. He's just 29 years old and already he's . attended 23 funerals of friends who've died from AIDS . Fol lowing yet another such event, Troy gathers with his friends Darcy (Debi Mazar), Duke (RuPaul) and Duke's lover, Harold (John "Lypsinka" Epperson) , all members o f the same HIV support group. They' ve become frustrated with a newly instituted lottery held every six months that gives a very few lucky people the chance to receive D-64, a new mira c le AIDS drug. The only alternative to the lottery is to pay the drug manufac turer's exorbitant price, a price which has allowed the company to clear over $250 mil l ion in profit. Frustration leads to inspiration as Darcy and Duke come up with an idea: if they can't afford to buy D-64, why not steal it? Troy reluctantly joins them in their scheme as they stake out a small drug store. They get away with the heist, taking the store's entire supply of D-64, and empowered by their success, they rob another drug store, then another, until they have more D-64 than they could ever use themselves . They decide to subvert the lottery and anonymously dis tribute their extra stock to the community. Now with a higher mission, they become even more aggressive, turning into both local 'news celebrities as well as fodder for com munity controversy. Eventually, they bungle a big heist, narrowly escaping the police. After that, they agree to give it all up, but only after one last big score: the drug com pany's warehouse.

e are very excited to bring you this selection of works made exclusively for queer kids by queer kids . We start with Lessons In Baby Dyke Theory, a sweet por trait of an out high school dyke who takes us on a ride through her everyday l ife in rural Canada and her ongoing search for her con temporaries. In h is First Year in the states, Trac Vu lived with his parents outside San Bernardino, California. This short is a somber remembrance of his youth, m ixing images of a colorful , lonely Southern Cal ifornia with stories of his first encounters with others like himself.

Shapes Of Silence mourns the kids who

never make it through childhood. A Japanese girl falls in love but cannot escape her abu sive father. Another parent in Junky Punky Girlz tells her daughter how to get ·her nose ' pierced, and eventually the daughter has to figure out a way to integrate her South East Asian heritage and her punk dyke lifestyle. Finally Out Loud shows that young queers find many different ways to express their queer selves. A strong Latina, two homeless Goth dykes, a cyber fag and a flamboyant gayboy who aspires to the presidency - these are just some of the people who speak up for themselves and others like them . ne of the best things about American

O film is its B-movie tradition. Some of

the most enjoyable action and horror films this country has produced have been no-bud get schlocky extravaganzas made by un known directors and starring unknown actors. That's the tradition Raising Heroes comes out of. It's the first gay .action fil m ! Josh and Paul are a successful gay couple in the midst of the most important event in their lives - adopting a child. They're about to receive approval from the social worker when Josh wit nesses a Mob hit and becomes the next target. With the final HEADLINE5 court hearing on the adoption only thre'e days away, it's a race for time as Josh and Paul fight to keep their dreams of an alternative family alive while being stalked by professional killers who want them dead. Come root for our adorable, sensitive, polit ically correct couple - one's kinda scrawny and the other is big and beautiful - as they blast away at vicious mobsters in parking garages, Italian restaurants, and even their own apartment, and then have sex in a gigan tic jacuzzi shaped like a champagne glass. There's lots of violence and lots of blood, and while it may not be as professional as Die Hard, hey - that's why we love it.

'Ha-.nln She l i ves comfortably in a A 1tII'..... 16 well-maintained home, , has a WIde cucle of canng friends, and has risen to the pinnacle of her career. Still grieving over the death of her son from "pneumonia," Toni can't bear to give away his clothing. Nor can she explain her sudderi physical attraction to other women. When her fiance tries to attribute her new sexual feelings to a mid-life hormonal imbalance, Toni doesn't buy it. She starts exploring other options and finds herself making spon taneous shopping trips to the gay bookstore, sex shop and the local lesbian bar where she meets a wide range of lesbians, including her co-worker Van, played by Tamara Tunie. She soon falls for the beautiful and elusive go-go dancer, Evonne (Caitlin Dulanyt), on whom she tests out her newly learned cruis ing skills. Shot in Minnesota, The Toilers And The Wayfarers is a refreshing voice from another part of the gay experience in America. Froelich masters his black-and-white tale with great style and elegance, and his young blond cast, all unknowns, lend a sexy authenticity to the film. The film marks Mr. Froelich's auspi cious feature film directorial debut.

and international programmers and curators to consider the past, present and future of gay and lesbian films and festivals. Thanks in part to the great 'success of gay and lesbian film festivals over the years , queer films have received more attention from mainstream critics and film fes tivals as well as from Hollywood studios. What is the position of gay and lesbian films in non queer specific film festivals? Finally, what are the challenges facing community festival pro grammers in this complicated age of increasing competition and diminishing arts finding? Through a discussion about these and other vital issues, Screening the Festivals will pro vide a or dialogue between festival program mers, filmmakers, and audiences.
