The film was produced at the time of the first gay liberation movement led by Doctor Magnus Hirschfeld in prewar Berlin. Summer Solstice, 1983 This evening the San Francisco International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival celebrates the work and the person of James Broughton. His is a unique and liberating vision of life and love revealed through his thirty-seven years of filmmaking and writing. We will see four of the twenty-two films he has made, and our evening's film journey will take us through THE PLEASURE GARDEN (1953) where we will celebrate the triumph of whimsical fun over the reign of inhibition. After the making of the film, there was a long pause. It had been a time for films with large casts, figurative characters, and romantic hero themes. We saw images which invoked the spirit of a boychild in search of fun. It is in T ESTAMENT (1974) that this boychild appears. Here, twenty-one years after THE PLEASURE GARDEN, James's films are navigating the realms of inner vision. Yet, unlike so many who work in this medium, James Broughton makes his vision

THE FAREWELL takes place just before the outbreak of World War II, and describes oppression in a middle-class society, and the tension created by conflicting personalities in a family. It is also the story of a lesbian woman's struggle for independence. Flashbacks sketch the main character, Valerie, at different periods of her life. Brought up amidst the Finnish-Swedish
poets. The Angel is a messenger and Muse who inspires and prods, protects and graces James's quest for poetic life. To him, poetry is not the mere writing of words nor the recording of film images; it is a way of life in which ecstasy, imagination, loving community, and fun are made real. In 1976 James Broughton and Joel Singer began their loving collaboration with the film

1:30 PM THIS SPECIAL FRIENDSHIP West Germany, 1982 Based on Roger Peyrefitte's Les Amities
-
Particulieres, THIS SPECIAL FRIENDSHIP is the story of homosexual love up against the authoritarianism of the Catholic Church. The innocent and affectionate love of two schoolboys, naturally and openly portrayed, contrasts with the repressed and guilt-ridden homosexuality of the school priests. After repeated attempts to stop the boys' encounters, a priest lies to the younger boy to get him to leave the school and end the forbidden relationship. Tragically, the boy commits suicide by jumping from a speeding Devotions
train. Despite the typical 1960's resolution of gay love in cinema, the homosexual love,

San Francisco Premiere A LOVE LIKE ANY OTHER, the first feature film by Frankfurt film critics, Hans Stempel and Martin Ripkens, is the story of a young gay couple in Berlin. Wieland, a teacher, and Wolf, a bookseller, live a quiet, amiable and affectionate life together, keenly aware of social responsibility and domestic decorum. The danger that emerges as a threat to their marriage is their need to conform to the norms of a middle-class, heterosexual lifestyle. Wolf's dream of opening an antiquarian bookstore is shattered by Wieland's refusal to give up the security of his civil service career. Wieland sympathizes with a group demanding "squatters' rights" but withdraws his support when reprimanded by the director of his school. The couple seem willing to compromise in every situation, including their love-relationship which is more conservative than either of them realize. While they do allow themselves sexual adventures with other men-and they speak proudly of their promiscuity-they are in no way prepared to involve themselves with other people. Their relationship with a young artist ends when he exposes their outwardly emancipated life together as being, ultimately, a mere variant of middle-class, possession足 related living. 3:30 PM CLUB DES FEMMES (WOMEN 'S CLUB) France, 1936 CLUB DES FEMMES is a rarely seen French comedy with main characters that include an attractive lesbian, a young dancer with a healthy sex drive, a foreign student who becomes involved in a prostitution ring and a man whose masculinity isn't threatened by dressing in drag. The film is set in an all足 women's hotel in Paris, established to provide an environment for women to interact, support one another, and live their lives free from men. Of course it's only a matter of time until men-men as exploiters and manipulators of women-penetrate the experimental sanctuary. With traces of the classic American screwball comedy, the inevitable farce begins. What makes CLUB DES FEMMES interesting for contemporary gay and lesbian audiences is the variety of sexual attitudes expressed in the film, specifically through the character Alice. Here, in 1936, we find a principal character who is clearly a lesbian but is not defined by stereotypes and whose tragedy, arguably, is not her sexuality but the fact that she is in love with a woman who is unable to understand or return her affection. While Alice's fate is not a happy one, it is a milder one than she would have faced in a Hollywood production forty years later. -My Yarabinec Director: Jacques Daval Cast: Danielle Darrieux plus short-

DEATH AND TRANSFIGURATION 1983 World Premiere This trilogy of films from Great Britain presents the portrait, from childhood to the grave, of Robert Tucker, a lower middle-class Liverpool homosexual, tormented by the conflicts of religion, guilt and frustration over his masochistic homosexuality, childhood nightmares and compulsive social respectability. In these harsh black-and-white movies Davies' impressionistic style appears to pay homage to the Japanese master Yasujiro Ozu, with shots that linger over quiet, empty rooms.

9:30 PM THE DEPUTY Spain, 1980
THE DEPUTY is a taut and gripping political thriller about a gay man high in the ranks of the Spanish Socialist Party. Roberto Orbea (Jose Sacristan) married to a loyal and beautiful wife, is well-respected by his colleagues and is in line for one of the party's top positions. While in prison for political offenses, however, he became involved with a young hustler. Later, out of prison, he makes contact with the hustler and, drawn to the lower class world to which he is so politically committed, he falls in love with another teenage boy, Jaunito. As their relationship develops we realize that Jaunito is part of a blackmail plot by a neo-fascist group out to get Orbea. Director Eloy de la Iglesia, who co-wrote THE DEPUTY, successfully blends the political turmoil of 1970's Spain (often using well-known incidents) with the personal story of a man's struggle, both as a Socialist

is as much about today's world as it is about the future-posing the question of whether oppression against women will be eliminated under any kind of social system. The film is fantasy in presenting a group of women who, experiencing oppression for decades, refuse to take it any longer and become armed fightes against the government. Their position is that oppression against women is not eliminated automatically with "socialism"-not only do political values have to change, cultural values must change and be embedded in practice. The film expresses the hope that women will be able to work together, that bitter conflicts that have existed within the women's community-between lesbians and heterosexuals and between women of different races-will one day disapp6ar. Mikael, however, is an ungrateful opportunist who drains Zoret's artistic spirit and uses his money, finally turning his attention to a wealthy young princess. In spite of Mikael's indifference, Zoret leaves all his possessions to the boy and, nearing his death, declares, "I can die in peace, I have known a great love." THE SOUND OF FAST RELIEF West Germany, 1982 U.S. Premiere A "psychograph" of the relations between men in patriarchal society, in the adventures of a dreamer. Male power fears male love like the killer fears the lover. But enemies are potential partners. Their problems are really only soft failings. How close together murder and love can be! How easily a misunderstanding becomes irreversible! Sense the tingling in your whole body and the bullet won't miss the target! War and peace in the buffer zone of the demi-god Eros! The fear of not being able to handle a soft situation underlies aggression. Hardness of feelings turns fun into something static which male power clings on to. Take away this static-ness (which is really aggressive) and the power is forced to hit out fast, to push out in front, to be louder. It is the lover's foremost task to break down this power. -Wieland Speck Producer: Wieland Speck Director, Writer & Editor: Wieland Speck

There is Angie Stardust, a black dancer from Harlem who once worked in drag clubs. Angie has gone into business for herself, opening a restaurant, "The Hamburger Queen," where a mixed bunch of unusuual characters hang out. Gary is a dancer who is in love with magic. Tara O'Hara, a former male nurse, is proud of his androgynous charms-charms he shows off in an enticing striptease. Joaquin La Habana performs as both a man and a woman at the same time. And then there is Judith and Tron, performing a wild, erotic trapeze act and Lila, from the south, who meets an East German agent who succeeds in making her East Germany's most famous rock star. Essentially a form of cabaret, the film moves from the sentimental through the witty and erotic. The players know their job, the camera work is inventive and the music is great.
