About Me: Hi I’m Kimberley, a third year Architecture student at London South Bank University. My focus is on community based projects, currently looking into sites in the London area. I had a background in STEM and 3D design throughout school and college before turning my passions towards architecture. When you don’t find me in the classroom I will probably be reading a book or out in nature doing my photography! My current projects have moved from Southwark and Lambeth over to Hackney Wick , where I will be trying to help the community that is struggling under the gentrification of the area.

Branching Bodies Focused in Lambeth, ‘Branching Bodies’ is a project aimed a promoting careers and jobs in the area. Currently suffering with a dropping daytime population, many residence have to travel for work while there is still a demand for workers in the area. Designed as a threshold for a future civic hub, the aim of the pavilion is to entice residents into the building using swooping directional curves inspired by the Lambeth Logo. Taking the form of a ribbon, the logo is said to mean ‘Togetherness, Pride, Energy and Openess’,with the pavilion aiming to capture these themes by promoting potential careers on the screens connected to the branch-like form. The name ‘Branching Bodies’ has been chosen to connect to the residence and the civic hub as a way of representing their potential new careers and branching out of their comfort zone.

6 - Front FrontElevation Elevation
Selected Works Final concept takes form from the circulation on the site, opening up in areas of higher footfall and placing ‘roots’ out of peoples paths. The form grows and spreads from the roots to create a branching pavilion.
Front Elevation - 7
Kimberley France The pavilion is powered by movement and use, with kinetic tiles making use of the pedestrian traffic to power advertisement screens, lights and affects.

Selected Works Final concept model represents the sweeping curves that aim to encourage movement into the site by naturally following the footpath and circulation.

Living Lambeth A continuation of the project ‘Branching Bodies’, the civic hub in Lambeth is built to accommodate the struggles of the community. Incorporating in space to ‘Live, Work, Play and Grow’, the hub follows on from the themes of careers by providing a hydroponic growing hub to fill the gap of agricultural workers in the area. This also aids the healthy food crisis being faced by the community, with a focus on healthy living being introduced with a rock climbing facility. The buildings design revolves around the sunlight and water requirements of the hydropinic system, with a curved roof determined by light and shadow.
Concept Collage- 11
Kimberley France The builings form revolves around the need for sunlight and water for hydroponic farming, with the internal void being carved out by the movements of the sun and shadows. This form helps to provide a natural slope for water collection.

14 - Circulation
Selected Works Circulation created the natural curves of the buildings plan, with internal and external movement carefully considered to create an inviting atmosphere for the civic hub.

16 - Circulation
Selected Works A cafe sits on the ground floor overlooking the basement where people can start their rock climbing adventure. Rock climbing has been chosen as an activity due to its popularity with the main demographic of the area and allows people to move from below ground and up into the sky - like the plants being produced here.
Circulation - 17
Kimberley France On other levels of the plan there is an adaptive workspace for the communities use, created with areas for group or solo work and rest. On the roof, skylights are arranged in areas that need most to least sunlight and create a dappled lighting effect within the building.
18 - Floor Plans
Selected Works The hydroponic farming on one side of the building and the rock climbing on the other are book ends to the activities taking place within the hub and encompass the idea of community and growth.

20 - North Elevation
Selected Works The final structure creates a statement within the street elevation but uses strong vertical elements to fit with the victorian structures nearby. With a green wall, there is a glimps into the hubs use as people pass by.

Selected Works Lambeth’s residents built up this space after the war with the motto that it was a space to ‘Live, work and Play’. The Living Lambeth hub brings this all together in one space to recreate the sense of community.

Kimberley France This map brings together the gravity of the homeless situation in Hackney Wick, representing the lack of the shelters in the area and anywhere nearby.
30 - Research Map
Selected Works The concept of the pavilion is to create a shelter for the homeless that can be adapted to provide more or less protection from the elements. By creating moving seating, the seat becomes and extra facade to shelter as needed. This also allows the homeless to make the space as open and inviting as they feel comfortable with.

32 - Materiality
Selected Works The facade panels and roof tiles are constructed from recycled paint tins and drink cans. As a material going largely to waste near Hackney Wick, this provides a cheap material that is already weatherproofed.
Materiality - 33
Kimberley France The seating is layed out on site in reference to the wind and sun paths, with more layers of protection in the necessary areas. There is also space for solo, pair, or group seats to add choice to the decision for the homeless.
34 - Plan Development
Selected Works The final design includes a drop off point for paint tins, as well as a cafe/serving area which charities can use to provide meals for the homeless. This can work as a coffee shop other times of day.

36 - Masterplan
Selected Works The pavilion can expand and grow as the need for it arises, taking over more or less of the site and possibly expanding elsewhere as an easily prefabricated design. This can also be taken away when it’s not in use anymore.

38 - West Elevation
Selected Works The tin of the paint cans fits well with the steel clad warehouses of the area, with the paint remains creating an interesting visual . The elevation of the pavilion would constantly change as people move the facade/seats to their use.
