About Me:

Hi I’m Kimberley, a recent 1st Class architecture graduate at London South Bank University. My focus is on community based projects, currently looking into sites in the London area. I had a background in STEM and 3D design throughout school and college before turning my passions towards architecture. When you don’t find me in the classroom I will probably be reading a book or out in nature doing my photography!

My current projects have moved from Southwark and Lambeth over to Hackney Wick , where I will be trying to help the community that is struggling under the gentrification of the area.

Branching Bodies

Focused in Lambeth, ‘Branching Bodies’ is a project aimed a promoting careers and jobs in the area. Currently suffering with a dropping daytime population, many residence have to travel for work while there is still a demand for workers in the area. Designed as a threshold for a future civic hub, the aim of the pavilion is to entice residents into the building using swooping directional curves inspired by the Lambeth Logo. Taking the form of a ribbon, the logo is said to mean ‘Togetherness, Pride, Energy and Openess’,with the pavilion aiming to capture these themes by promoting potential careers on the screens connected to the branch-like form.

The name ‘Branching Bodies’ has been chosen to connect to the residence and the civic hub as a way of representing their potential new careers and branching out of their comfort zone.

Living Lambeth

A continuation of the project ‘Branching Bodies’, the civic hub in Lambeth is built to accommodate the struggles of the community. Incorporating in space to ‘Live, Work, Play and Grow’, the hub follows on from the themes of careers by providing a hydroponic growing hub to fill the gap of agricultural workers in the area. This also aids the healthy food crisis being faced by the community, with a focus on healthy living being introduced with a rock climbing facility.

The buildings design revolves around the sunlight and water requirements of the hydropinic system, with a curved roof determined by light and shadow.

We Still Reside

‘We still reside’ focuses on creating a safe and sheltered space for the homeless of Hackney Wick. As a problem growing out of control since the new developments have taken over, homeless charities are struggling between demand and funding to provide much needed facilities. For Hackney Winter Night shelter the pavilion presents space for feeding and serving the community while being conscious of their struggles.

Designed to give the user a choice, the pavilion is made of modular seats to allow the space to grow as more people require help. Each element has a façade that turns into a seating element to provid necessary protection from the wind, sun, and rain. With seating provided in singles, pairs, or larger groups the aim is to allow users to experience the space in a way they feel comfortable.

The project also looks at recycled materials as a cheap and easily accessible building material, with paint tins forming the façade and roof tiles of structure to link in with the creative environment of Hackney Wick.

The Re(Solve) Centre

This project is a continuation of ‘We Still Reside’ in Hackney Wick and follows the aims of providing a safe space for the homeless. The aims of The Re(Solve) centre are to Re(Home) the homeless, Re(Establish) community ties and Re(Use) waste materials to provide work for the residents on site. The use of the paint cans is continued, with a manufacturing centre setup to create tin and aluminium façade panels using this recycling scheme. The selling of these panels provides an income for the residents and hopes to re-establish them into the wider community.

An Exhibition of Works

The final year exhibition at LSBU was designed and set up by myself and a group of students. In keeping with the ‘Studio 04’ theme of Hackney Wick and gentrifiation, the design aims to highlight students work while hinting at viewers the studio brief. With a month time limit, each element had to be designed and built by us and then the walls carefully curated.
