TanenbaumCHAT Journeys Annual Report 2017-18

TanenbaumCHAT Journeys

We must ensure that our future is even stronger than our past by making TanenbaumCHAT a destination for significant philanthropy.

What is the journey of a TanenbaumCHAT student? From the Grade 9 newbie entering our school for the first time, to the Grade 12 student just months from graduation, to alumni choosing day school for their children, and all the way to third-generation alumni who are now grandparents of current students… The personal stories shared in this 2017-2018 Annual Report explore some of these journeys firsthand. They illuminate the common experiences these students share through the decades, how TanenbaumCHAT helped them find themselves, discover their passions, and develop as unique individuals and compassionate, thoughtful adults. TanenbaumCHAT truly has touched this community for generations. In the last 57 years, almost 8,000 distinguished alumni have taken their places across the globe as parents, professionals, entrepreneurs, artists – and leaders and protectors of Jewish communities in Toronto, Canada and beyond.

As our financial report demonstrates, nearly 20% of our budget relies upon philanthropic dollars – a combination of the extraordinary tuition “buy-down” facilitated by gifts from the Jesin-Neuberger Foundation and an anonymous donor family, alongside the unrestricted donations from the Annual Fund, which broke the million-dollar mark for the second year in a row. Our donors, like our school, span the generations. They are the grandparents who delight in a school concert, the parents who understand that a gap exists between tuition and the real cost of a TanenbaumCHAT education, and our alumni who hold a special place for the school in their hearts. We thank all our generous donors listed in the pages of this report, as well as the alumni, their families and their children who have shared their stories for this publication. Enjoy the read!

We must ensure that our future is even stronger than our past by making TanenbaumCHAT a destination for significant philanthropy.

The strength and resilience of our school A message from Dr. Jonathan Levy, Head of School and Ray Rubin, President of the Board

T

he term midor l’dor – “from generation to generation” – permeates our liturgy: it is in the Bible, the Siddur, the Haggadah and the Talmud. The memories of our past and commitment to our future ensure the continuity of our Jewish community. As a premier Jewish high school, TanenbaumCHAT has helped generations of students to uncover their passions and to develop the knowledge, character and courage to impact today and tomorrow. In fact, for nearly 60 years, our school has played a transformative role in ensuring the vitality and constancy of the Jewish community of Toronto. Between us, we’ve filled the roles of educator, committed and long-standing volunteer and, perhaps most importantly for both of us, parents of students and alumni. It was a joy to see our own kids here, immersed in Jewish values and peoplehood, encouraged to think critically and creatively, and emboldened to become their best selves. The 2017-18 year was the first one on the consolidated Wilmington campus. The more than 870 students who were enrolled benefitted from increased course offerings, sports teams, clubs, committees and school

programming. Merging onto one campus presented unique challenges. However, the goal of creating a vibrant hub of Jewish life was paramount. The strength and resilience of our school community was our beacon. Happily, our success in this endeavour allowed us to grow. We remain committed to offering a robust program and to relentlessly pursuing excellence in everything we do. After a very strong recruitment season, nearly 300 Grade 9 students began their high school experience in fall 2018. This was coupled with an outstanding rate of student retention across all grades. For three generations, Toronto’s Jewish community has relied on TanenbaumCHAT to help our youth find themselves and their place in the community so that they are equipped to become tomorrow’s leaders. Thank you for your continued support of our precious school. Together, we can ensure that TanenbaumCHAT continues to fulfil its promise of being the next link in the chain of Jewish continuity.

It was a joy to see our own kids here, immersed in Jewish values and peoplehood, encouraged to think critically and creatively, and emboldened to become their best selves.

Financial Report

Financial performance for the year ending June 2018

By Rhona Birenbaum, MBA CFO & Executive Director

T $4,200,000 (16%).

he financial statements of 2018 differ from those of 2017 in a number of ways. In 2017/18, the tuition fee was dramatically reduced from $27,300 to $18,500. This led to a decrease in revenue of $5,000,000 (18%) compared to the previous year. The tuition reduction was a condition of generous gifts secured by UJA Federation from the JesinNeuberger Foundation and an anonymous donor, payable over a five year period, of which 2017/18 was the first fiscal year. For the first time in 17 years we operated a single campus, leading to a decrease in expenses of

As reported last year, lower projected income due to reduced tuition fees will create an overall shortfall in our operating budget over the five year period of the gifts. Surpluses projected in the first years of the $14,000,000 gifts are to be used to ensure the school remains viable over the full 5-year period. This year’s financial performance demonstrates we are on track to meet this goal.

When TanenbaumCHAT runs in the family For more than 60 years, and across generations, TanenbaumCHAT has played a formative role, impacting every facet of Toronto’s Jewish community. For a growing number of families, it’s personal! “My daily life revolved around CHAT,” says Jean Wagner Sutkiewicz ’68 – a comment that would probably resonate with today’s students too and, arguably, with all CHAT students ever! This includes Jean’s daughter Stephanie Shlagbaum ’88 and her granddaughter (Stephanie's daughter) Jordyn Lasko ’19. Jean, Stephanie and Jordyn are part of a growing contingent of three-generation TanenbaumCHAT families whose memories and experiences of the school span more than three decades. Both Stephanie and her brother, Daniel Shlagbaum ’93, are TanenbaumCHAT graduates. “There was no doubt in our minds but that we would send our children to CHAT,” says Jean, adding that “it’s a great source of pride for me that Jordy is here”. The importance of a Jewish education was echoed by Mark Lapedus ’66 when he spoke at TanenbaumCHAT’s Generations Day. “One of my most cherished moments was last year when I got

When TanenbaumCHAT is all in the family a call from Jakey,” he admitted referring to his grandson Jake Lapedus ’22 who is currently in grade 9. “Zaidie, I want you to know that I just signed up to go to CHAT next year – what do you think of that?” asked Jake. Clearly moved, Mark told the crowd that he had “been waiting about 70 years to get a call like that from my grandchild”. The critical role a sound Jewish education plays in shaping a young person was clear to Mark and his wife Jan (a former Jewish educator). They sent both of their children, Jake’s father Justin Lapedus ’91 and Jillian Lapedus ’00, to CHAT. “We all know that our existence as a people depends on the strength and excellence of our Jewish educational system,” says Mark. A strong sense of belonging and of continuity is pervasive across the generations. “I don’t think of myself at CHAT,” clarifies Jean. “I think of an entire group – and those behind us and in front of us.” Echoing the familiar refrain of today’s TanenbaumCHAT song, she continues, “We really felt it was home.”

The strongest connections For enduring friendships and Jewish commitment, look no further than the Class of 1997.

F

or some alumni, TanenbaumCHAT is not just the source of a wonderful education but also a great matchmaker! The graduate cohort of 1997 is a perfect case in point: twelve graduates married within their class, taking the notion of lifelong connections to a logical conclusion.

What’s more, their ongoing commitment to Jewish community and education is palpable. Between them, they have 21 children all of whom attend Jewish day schools. Collectively, they volunteer for many organizations that are actively involved in supporting the Jewish community – and there's even a current TanenbaumCHAT teacher in the group! It’s another example of how TanenbaumCHAT builds bridges across generations and out into the community.

8

TanenbaumCHAT gives you a foundation for the rest of your life. It provides you with a framework Jewishly, socially and academically to succeed in every aspect. It makes you proud of who you are. I always wanted to come back here to teach. – Malka Lebi ’97, TanenbaumCHAT teacher

Six couples from the class of 1997 reunite at TanenbaumCHAT with their children – all of whom attend Jewish day schools in Toronto.

The Class of 1997 weighs in on the TanenbaumCHAT experience and the value of a Jewish education “CHAT is one of the only options where a child will receive a strong secular education, and a strong Jewish identify and connection that will last a lifetime.”

Rachel (Orfus) Wardinger & Joel Wardinger Gavriel, Koby, Reuven – Toronto Cheder; Leah – Bais Yaakov Elementary

“CHAT provided me with a foundation... that propelled me towards undertaking much more Jewish education as well as leadership within the Jewish community.”

“Jewish day school education immerses our children in Jewish religion and culture, and fosters a true Jewish identity and love for Israel on a daily basis. It is our hope, as it was our parents and grandparents hopes before us, that this daily intensive exposure will shape our children and their peers and ensure our people’s future.”

“I credit a lot of my success in my career to the habits and confidence instilled from my days at CHAT.”

“A connection to Judaism and Israel is paramount and something we hope our children develop and cherish.”

“[TanenbaumCHAT] provided us with a challenging academic and Jewish learning environment that prepared us for later academic success and enabled us to form lifelong friendships with peers from various Jewish backgrounds.”

“Jewish day school provides the fundamental foundation to enable children to make critical decisions about how to live a Jewish life as they become adults.”

Opening our doors to new students A report on recruitment by Laurie Wasser, CAEP, Director of Admissions & Recruitment

T

he primary goal of the Admissions Office is to provide prospective students and families with valuable information about TanenbaumCHAT’s premier education and breadth of offerings. The aim is to allow families to make informed decisions about their high school choice and to assist them through the admissions process.

These efforts, combined with the transformational gifts from the Jesin-Neuberger Foundation and an anonymous family, that bolstered financial accessibility, resulted in: • Grade 9 enrolment levels close to 50% higher than the previous year • Almost 300 Grade 9 students

Ongoing community outreach, private and group tours, and partnership programming with our feeder schools, are just some of the ways we showcase the value of a TanenbaumCHAT education. The Admissions team, staff, administration, and parent and student ambassadors all play a pivotal role in supporting these families.

• Three Grade 9 New Stream classes – the largest cohort ever • Intake of New Stream students from more than 30 public and independent schools

Energetic outreach and experiential programming opportunities demonstrated TanenbaumCHAT’s premier academic and extra-curricular offerings. Some highlights: • At our first-ever feeder school robotics competition, we hosted more than 80 Grade 7 and 8 students. • Robbins Hebrew Academy students participated in a 6-week after-school robotics course. • Grade 7 Jewish day school students participated in arts and technology courses. • Prospective families joined us for a variety of school performances and events. • Group tours brought more than 300 prospective Jewish day school students and over 60 prospective New Stream students to the school. A large number of private tours were also held. • Ongoing communication to the community featured Facebook and Instagram posts, postal mailings, advertising in a range of publications and venues, TanenbaumCHAT and UJA eblasts, and welcome calls from Student and Parent Ambassadors.

Student Council provides a warm welcome on Grade 9 Orientation Day.

Endowed Gifts The TanenbaumCHAT graduation ceremonies are the highlight of the year – an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of our students and to mark the culmination of their high school journeys. Over time, almost all of the departmental awards have been named – each with a story as unique as the donor family that endowed it.

This year, TanenbaumCHAT moved these endowed funds, some $400,000, to the Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto. The Foundation’s assets are managed by a dedicated committee, supported by highly-knowledgeable professionals who specialize in non-profit portfolios. We are certain this investment will help make our philanthropic dollars grow and make a real and measurable difference.
