SUSTAINABLE RENOVATION OF “SCUOLA DI INFANZIA DIANA IN REGGIO EMILIA
THESIS PROJECT

LOCATION: Reggio Emilia,Italy ACADEMIC YEAR: 2012-2013_studio 5 Subject of the thesis is the renovation of Asilo Diana,a nursery School located in Reggio Emilia city center,in the heart of the Public Gardens and famous all over the world for the educational model applied, founded by Loris Malaguzzi and promoted by Reggio Children . However,a thorough analysis has highlighted some critical issues, such as the well-being of the users. A measurement campaign specifically conducted has in fact noted the dissatisfaction of kindergarten children against environmental comfort conditions. Also, there is the undersizing of the big-atelier. This is supported by the energy inefficiency of the case, the seismic vulnerability of the building and the lack of adequate connections between the school and the public park. The main focus of the design strategies is the child, who becomes the real client ,which is the subject whom satisfy needs and desires. At the architectural scale, the complexity of the project has been to provide the nursery space needed . It has been therefore planned to build an expansion, trying not to alter the character of the place, creating a comfortable and safe environment, aiming to achieve energy performance values higher than the standards set by law. In conclusion, the design process has been thought to be done by different steps.

UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

LOCATION: Bologna,Ex Staveco; ex industrial area ACADEMIC YEAR: 2010-2011_studio 4
The project is an University campus, located in the complex Ex Staveco,a vast urban area in Bologna which is located at the foot of the hill of San Michele in Bosco, between the ports of San Mamolo and Castiglione. It consists in numerous military and industrial buildings and it is considered particularly valuable for the presence of green spaces and for the quality of some buildings, which exhibit the characteristics of late nineteenth century industrial architecture. Coming from the main entrance in the pre-existing building next to the street, first there is the library, with its tower, whose function is to host the archive of books, then the two auditoriums, one of which is inserted in the volume of pre-existence, and finally the Faculty of Architecture, defined by a set of parallelepi peds placed on the highest part of the lot. In order to take advantage of the elevation gradient that characterizes the site,it has been designed a progressive system of ramps and stairs and on each terrace it has been placed a specific building.

LOCATION: London,Westfield Student Village ACADEMIC YEAR: 2009-2010_ executive design course The work consist in the detailed analysis of the Pooley Hall, one of the buildings of the Westfield Student Village designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Architects,in order to represent graphically its structure, levels and materials. The main charateristics of this building are the cladding in horizontal bands of pre-oxidised copper and the high acoustic ratings, with tri ple glazed windows and a highly insulated external wall.

LOCATION: Pinarella ( RA ), Italy ACADEMIC YEAR: 2009-2010, urban design studio 3 The project consists in a touristic and residential complex, designed on a dismissed site which is located between the train railway and the seaside of Pinarella, a summer touristic destination almost abandoned in winter time. The aim of the project is to design a new area that can give vitality to Pinarella in every season, and the main point of it are: - a network of pedestrian and vehicular streets which connect the site to the other cities around and to the Pineta ( a mediterranean forest next to the beach ); - a series of strategies in order to make the traffic slower on the main street; - new public structures like sport centers, museums, parks, seaside gardens; - new touristic buildings like hotels and residences for visitors; - new houses for the locals.

The aim of the project is to design a new area that can give good quality houses to the city and to the toursits coming in summer time, responding to these requirements: - a network of pedestrian and vehicular streets which connect the site to the other districts around and to the Levante Park; - new public parks,in a close relationshi p with the residential blocks; - new residential blocks, that can visually reach the sea, beyond the curtain of flats on the seaside; - new pavillions located on the Levante Park, the can be shady spots for visitors and locals,to compensate for the absence of trees.

RESTORATION OF A PICTURE GALLERY LOCATION: Forlì (FC), Italy ACADEMIC YEAR: 2010-2011_Restoration studio
Finally, the cortyard adjacent the new auditorium has been designed in order to make it open to people and visitors through a series of strategies: - the reconstruction of the pavement; - the design of new paths and the organization of the green; - the repositioning and design of the shelter hosting the archeological pieces,to create a closer relationshi p with the pre-existing fountain.
The project consists in the detailed analysis of the ancient building ‘Palazzo del Merenda’ (1722) and in the restoration of one of its rooms, the picture gallery. The main idea is to make this gallery host a new function and more specifically an auditorium, according to the plans of the government to move the pictures in another building. The reasons of this choice are: - the dimensions of this room and in particular its double-height; - the good sound propagation; - the easy accessibility (it is near the main entrance of the whole building); - the possibility for the adjacent public Library and University to use it for conferences and presentations of books. The project aim is to design a small house garden, which is located in a suburban area, quite calm and clean. The garden is actually uncultivated and there are no trees and plants. Also,it is North-South oriented in its main axis (considering the house profile) and it has a regular perimeter. The house owners requests are: a meditation space for the family mother,a space for children to play and run and an outside extension of the living-room. The main design strategies are: - geometry and distant vanishing points _as a way lo characterize and visually enlarge the space - local species - multi-layer composition_order and harmony and decorative effects in seasons - cold colors_they give you a sense of peace and calm - water_an ornalmental bowl on the North side - Feng Shui tradition.
