Fantasy allows to think about something that was not there before, without any limits. Even things that are not practically doables[...] Invention instead produces something that was not there before, but without easthetic problems. The inventor produces a mechanism and he does not care if it is also nice, he only cares about its functionality [...] then there is creativity, which uses fantasy and invention to produce something that was not there before, but it is possible and working. Imagination allows people to imagine what the imagination, invention and creativity produce. A man who lives on memories grows old. The one who lives on projects stays young.

Dear Sirs,
I am writing this letter to recommend Francesca Caccioli for your practise. Francesca is an architect and she was an excellent student at Politecnico di Milano School of Architecture and Society and I have had the privilege of knowing her not only in working field but also in academic field. She worked on her master thesis under my supervision and she did an excellent job. “Pause urbane” is a very good analysis about the actual condition of a Parma's district and she suggested a very fine urban solution proposing not an invasive intervention, but a detailed and punctual one, in line with her socio-enviromental analysis and urban acupuncture. Francesca has shown a lot of enthusiasm towards this theme and she did a gradely thesis bringing a new way of approaching the topic. Francesca was my intern at EFA (i.e., my office) for six months and she has quickly become part of our team. She has demonstrated talent in solving assigned tasks briefly and in an excellent way, showing very good knowledge of 2D/3D drawing. She has shown additional promise as a key player with other students who make up the intern project team. Indeed, after her first three years of studies at the University of Parma, her skills have allowed her to easily access at Politecnico di Milano for her Master. After only one month, she has been chosen for the position of student designer in “EXPO2015_Cluster International Workshop” after competing with many other students from international universities to project and design the “Arid Zones Cluster” (final project exhibited at FUORISALONE, University of Milano, 2014 and Biennale di Venezia 2014). She has demonstrated innovative and creative ideas, leadership qualities, and a gift for motivating his projectmates, when working on a group project. Her knowledges of English and French have further helped her to work in international teams. I had Francesca also as a student in my course “Progettazione, costruzione, gestione delle infrastrutture sportive” and she has excelled in the role of researcher. Indeed, she has worked on a detailed historical research about the football stadium of Parma “E. Tardini”, by including unpublished documents and historical drawings found from the archive survey. I know Francesca since five years and, during this period, she has always had a deep desire to learn more and more and she proved it not only with her excellent academic performance but also with frequent participation in architecture conferences, architectural trips organized by Politecnico, and a constant update on what is happening in the world of architecture every day. I believe you would benefit greatly by accepting Francesca into the internship program at your Office, and I know Francesca would learn a lot about the inner workings of an architectural firm as you actually are. As you consider candidates for the internship at your Office, I encourage you to take a close look at Francesca Caccioli. Should you have any further question, I am available via email at: emilio.faroldi@polimi.it Thank you in advance for your consideration of Francesca Caccioli’s application for this internship.
Sincerely, Emilio Faroldi

English version Francesca was remarkable for her exactness, efficiency and precision. She proved her autonomy, availability, helpfulness and she was a proposal force in various projects. She proved also great creativity in designing pojects and showed solid tehcnical skills while working on execution plans. Her enthusiasm and her ability to take the initiative have allowed her to quickly find her place within the team. The confrontation in the real world of the firm helped Francesca to develop her skills in all phases of the architectural project and, more generally, see the general work about the building’s field. I strongly racommande Francesca, because I am convinced that she has a big potential to progress on her architectural career.

Cluster International Workshop Prof. Biamonti, prof. Zini with: Carlos Monedero, Covadonga Blasco
The Cluster Project | Arid Zones The workshop was composed by students and professors from 18 italian and intenational universities. The selection of 27 students from Politecnico di Milano was announced and I was selected. The idea for Expo Milano 2015 is to create an Expo in which every project, every exhibit, every element of the programming will be developed with the aim of putting the visitors and their experience of the event on centre stage. The aim is also to make sure that the Theme can be seen everywhere so the visitor will be immersed in it through the many different interactions with the landscape and with everything on offer as soon as he or she enters the Expo Site. The Clusters represent one of the most characteristic elements of Expo Milano 2015 and add weight to the development of the Theme. These exhibition areas have never been seen before and will, above all, involve many Countries in one 10
architectural project developed around a shared central theme to which each Country will make its own personal contribution. According to the Cluster model, each Country will have its own individual exhibition space around a common area. Countries interested in becoming part of a Cluster will consult with the Organizer as to how the common area should be developed.

Arid Zones Arid environments are extremely diverse in terms of their land forms, soils, fauna, flora, water balances, and human activities. Because of this diversity, no practical definition of arid environments can be derived. However, the one binding element to all arid regions is aridity. The concept | SEBKHA Sabkha means, in Arabic, flat salted desert, characterized by a varied reticule made of traces created by evaporated water. Sabkha is a dreamlike place, a natural landscape made by white, shining and inanimate salt. The salt is the discolor cradle that charms the man but at the same time it creates death. The sense of infinity is the generative element of the project. The arid landscape without reliefs and elements that break the horizontal pureness, invades The man making himself as the unique vertical element that observes the immensity of boundlessness. The project is formed by a superposition of different layers articulated by the central space, which is the garden of mirrors. The threshold concept is very present in the
project. There is a transition from out-in-out linking the dierent areas of the cluster. Some spots of light that comes from the roofforms the carpet of the interior space where the all of the pavillions are directed in order to inrich the interior space. Suddenly the visitor is surprised by the centerpiece created by a glowing wall which creates an interesting and curious journey leading to the secret entrances for the “secret garden. The mirage The light wall inside the area accompanies curious visitors, and glimpses pieces of an indefinite dreamy and eductive environment. Beyond the wall, a system made of mirrors creates an artificial and arid landscape; the illusion of an endless space is kept alive by the changeble matter and by the guests’ feelings. The secret garden The visitor is led to the most intimate place of the cluster by small and compressed paths where the skyline is lost in the infinite and isolated space causing a feeling of absence.

Exhibition EXPO_2015, CLUSTERS at FUORISALONE Università Statale Milano, Ca’ Granda, FUORISALONE april 2014 | final solution On arriving at this Cluster, the visitor is presented with a water fountain that is situated in the public area, giving the impression of a natural oasis in an arid landscape. Also within this area, visitors are provided with information through presentations and performances that highlight the challenges and resources typical of these arid environments. As visitors leave this Cluster, they will have the opportunity to sample and purchase some of the fruits and products that grow in these arid parts of the world. Desert sandstorms are the inspiration behind the design of this Cluster, which represents the arid and uninhabitable environment found in various parts of the world. Despite how harsh these environments are, there is still life and resources to be discovered here. The atmosphere created in the Cluster by this desert storm theme has been made through the use of canes that hang from the ceiling, while the pavilions pose as rocks that stand out in the sandstorm.

bogotà mixed use laboratorio di progettazione architettonica v Prof. Cecchi, prof. Bertazzoni with: Niccolò Brovelli
Bogotà is a metropolis characterized by a large gap between rich people and poor people. Indeed this fact is noticeable in the urban fabric and even more in buildings. In particular, the assigned area is characterized by a deep cleft which is a huge freeway. It separates two very different neighborhoods. The south one has a very low settlement with adherent houses, the north one shows the administrative area of the city with tall skyscrapers and financial headquarters. The aim of the project is to find a compromise between these two realities . Bogotà mixed-use is a sort of slab in which there are multiple functions and towers that can be used comfortably by the inhabitants from the two districts. Big patios interrupt the continuity of the horizontal slab letting penetrate the surrounding park and creating, at the same time, small inner gardens which let pass the sunlight in the lower commercial part of the 18
building. Moreover there are other openings in the facades of the towers, so that the light can reach the common areas on each floor.

parma città delle muse MASTER THESIS Prof. Faroldi, Prof. Vettori with: Eleonora Aliani
The developed theme concerns to face the issue of urban regeneration of a portion of the city that, although it is situated in a central area, it shows its considerably decay since long time. This topic is multiple and controversial, the rebirth of the neighborhood finds its own place in aspiring to a thoughtful survey on the same area with the intention of revealing current issues concerning not only the matter of public space, understood as a physical, architectural, as well as theater and reflection of society that use it and, more generally, of today’s society.
titude of the renewed civis about the public matter, also partly determined by the advent of technology and globalization, we investigate the spontaneous variations that create ways to relating with the other poeple, thus to experience (or not) the community: the physical one or the real the real one.
The physical expressions of urban public space are investigated through two types of approaches: structural and aesthetic. Then we deepen issues referring to the ability of the architectural work to be recognized and decoded, to meet the users’ expectations, to speak a The investigation carried out wide- known language. ly embraces the theme, focusing on the inherent dichotomy and inevitably relating itself to the changes that, recently, have led to a reversal of interpersonal relationships and, consequently, of the way to experience the city and its shared space, public space . The outcome of this investigation is about focusing on the finest aspects of the city, promoting interventions that, starting from the bottom, take advantage from the energy of the community, in a positive way, to redress the decline and improve the urban landscape. The regeneration of Piazzale Rondani and Piazzale Matteotti, located in the district Oltretorrente of Parma, is a paradigm and generator of a process that starts from a functional, volumetric and landscaping level to achive a global system. Thus we imagine a new aggregation system as an attractor of the city, which is a meeting and permanencing place, a network of public spaces inhabited, with the purpose of generating a necessary sociability. It is also crossed by the highway and the railway allows the transition from the city to the coast through arched openings. In the north part, near the mountain, there is an amazing villa, Villa Bombrini that, in my project, it will become the starting point of a great park sloping to the sea. The project involves the further opening of the passages in the wall that supports the rail and a direct connection from the villa to the sea and the auditorium through the park. Green paths lead people through a process that presents many stages. Initially the garden in front the villa, the passage under the railroad, under the highway untill you reach the 34

The project is about a new settlement of various functions, creating a new attraction pole for the district that today is mainly residential. The project of residential buildings, in fact, is not only about the theme of the dwelling, but also about the theme of sociability. In this connectiom, it was thought a common center area that can be used not also by the inhabitants living in designed buildings, but also by the inhabitants of the whole district: it is the pole of attraction. The buildings designed include a ground floor area of services, such as workshops, shops and other necessities that also serve the neighboring district. The upper floors lodge some apart42

desio boundaries laboratorio di progettazione urbanistica i Prof. Lanzani, Prof. Zanfi With: Tomas Della Vecchia, Mattia Rota
The study of the small town of Desio led to many results. First of all, it is a village located in very close to Milan and consequently it became a sort of satellite of Milan and it has been incorporated into the network of the metropolis increasingly losing its own identity. Due to this phenomenon, the city expanded but not in a homogeneously way: it is a testimony of the urban sprawl. From the analysis of the territorial and municipal boundaries, the team noted that there is not a real correspondence between the administrative boundaries and borders of the town, although there are roads that interrupt the continuity of the abstract border and cut entering the city. These “interruptions” as needles enter into the urban fabric and create, from their incidences, a sort of “doorway”, a gate to the town. In correspondence of these entrances, the group thought to create some areas of considerable importance in such a way that the passage into the 46
country was recognizable. We utilized many different approaches and for each of theme, we used different instruments and elements. diagram
