master thesis
School is the first public institution which we confront with, the first space after home in which we grow. Yet there is very little or no attention to the space of learning. Why the schools’ environment is shaped and has so much affinity with the typology of the barracks or the hospital? Which is the historical and political interaction that links them? Today, especially in Italy, there is a disconnection between two opposite directions: on one hand there is the impetus to achieve new forms of active learning and on the other we crash into spaces of knowledge that too often still respond to old sociopolitical contexts. The school’s welfare can be understood as a barometer of the society. If schools work and pupils learn how to develop their critical spirit, based upon a strong cultural base, then society will grow and it will do it healthy. The school is a building that lasts through time. Its design can no longer be serial nor accidental.

master thesis
The current typology of educational spaces is build upon the old structure of the nineteenth-century schools, based on the physical location of the students at one side and on the insulation and visual hierarchy of the teacher on the other, all within a space strongly directed, tight and compressed. New pedagogical concepts conceive teaching as a dynamic dialogue, an act of teaching that can grow in polycentric spaces that are not limited to the classroom area. The different environments are equipped with advanced technological supports, as advanced are the new generations and their interaction with the material space and the digital world. The whole school should be a great active laboratory, where each space is free and accessible and promote learning, inductive or deductive. The corridor is no longer a marginal space but it expands and becomes a place of relationships and possibilities. Schools should not close up and isolate from the rest of the world, instead there should be a necessary and continuous relationship between the two. Intimate and isolated spaces should be alternated with filter spaces in which the wider public community and the small school community can meet and mutually enrich each other. The intervention affects an area outside the GRA, in the East quadrant of the City of Rome, VIII town hall, in a neighborhood recently built, with increasing population growth where the school emergency is problematic. The project is a school complex, which can hold 400 children and which can represent the Civic Center and offer public services to the community.

ectproject The redevelopment of this part of the city begins from an analysis of the territory, its geomorphological characteristics, its history. We are in fact in a very complex area, bound on the north by an archaeological park, on the east by the Roman aqueduct, on the south by the large Caffarella park and the Appia Antica. During the 60s and 70s this area has been the subject of a growing phenomenon caracterized by unauthorised development, reflecting the growing demand of housing for the workers needed in the ‘new’ construction sites adjacent to the area. This phenomenon has totally removed the route of the ancient Via Latina, which in the past went through the area. The project tries to respond to the problems created by this ‘old’ housing emergency, such as the lack of proper planning and tries to restore the relationship between city, archeology and landscape.

The Department of Architecture Roma Tre was born between the pavilions of the former slaughterhouse in Testaccio, a few steps from the Pyramid. The goal is to fit inside the weave of the city and redevelop abandoned industrial areas in order to make active and participant the academic institution among the community. The Library of Arts rest on the area of the old refrigerators and it represents a new link between the district and the slaughterhouse, now that has become Pole of Arts.

ectproject
The theme of the thirteenth edition of the international seminar of design proposes to launch a reflection on the latent potential of the municipality of Quartu Sant’Elena and the territory of the Regional Natural Park Molentargius Saline in Sardinia. Starting from the different features shown in the territories selected as project areas and once identified the case studies, five possible variations of the theme of reuserecycling were proposed. The project covers a wide coastal strip in the territory of Quartu Sant’Elena and aims to reconfigure the municipality, accordingly to the untapped potential seen in the different landscapes that characterize it.

The project of a small museum located in the evocative Piazza d’Oro at Villa Adriana in Tivoli, seeks to recover one of the typical spatial configurations used in ancient Rome. It restores a kind of mute scenography, a long white wall that helps to re-read the geometry of the square and restore its shape without choosing the path of a faithful reconstruction.

The theme of the course of the fourth year at the Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto aimed to design a cultural center, located in front of the faculty on a terrain that slopes down to the river. The Center do Conhecimento is configured as a large space, a container that has the purpose of putting in close connection the inner space and the outdoor, the landscape. Functions are quite immaterial, suspended and connected by weightless docks.

The project is located along Via della Magliana Nuova, it involves an area of transition between the city and the country. The project imagines a residential building shaped like a long blade that reaches out towards the landscape engaging some functions of public interest such facilities and a gym. The building exploiting its conformation is placed on terraces that follow the slight slope of the countryside creating a public park.

This is a little study that inspects the socio political-context and the constructive aspects that caracterized the School of Matematics design by the architect Gio Ponti. The building is part of a major design that tried to create an university campus, called CittĂ Universitaria della Sapienza open in 1935 in Rome. Marcello Piacentini was the lead architect of this huge project, appointeed directy by Benito Mussolini. This research wanted to collect from the Archivio Storico Sapienza all the original historical documents about the construction of the school, starting from the selection of the materials to the definitive drawing of the building and the furniture.
