SECLUSION
Virginia Center for Creative Arts Old City Philadelphia Fall Studio 2015
In this project I designed a Virginia center for creative arts that housed both artists and authors whilst also providing studio spaces. This project focused heavily on floor plans and details. This project explored the notion of public and private with the final design creating a hierarchy of private and public space. The first floor of the building is completely public with a lobby, theatre and double height exhibition. As you ascend the processional staircase you have entry into the top of the theatre and views into the double height exhibition room. Whilst also have private writing studios that contain both the studio and the living quarters for the author. These overlook the green courtyard that was created to maximize the creative environment and mimic the historic gardens of residential Philadelphia. Furthermore there is an open studio space for four artists to occupy as much as their work requires. As you ascend further through the building there is public space just for the artists, a bar and dinning room area. Finally on the top floor is an open rooftop terrace and more writer’s studios. The louvers on the design of the courtyard create hidden balcony’s for the writers whilst also providing privacy into the rooms and sun shading.
