CAREER DEVELOPMENT This academic year Career Services held four Career Development events: a Portfolio Review, Architecture Career Fair, Alt. Design Career Fair and Alumni Speed Networking.
The Portfolio Review invites architecture firm representatives to review students’ work and provide critical feedback, while the Career Fairs give students the opportunity to interview with representatives seeking interns or full/part-time employees. The Architecture Career Fair focuses on more traditional firms such as Perkins Eastman and RAMSA, whereas the Alt. Design fair solicits technology, design and advertising companies. This year, 24 firms and more than 200 students participated in the Architecture Career Fair. Eleven firms and 120 students participated in the Alt. Design Career Fair, setting a new attendance record for both fairs. This spring, Career Services hosted the premier networking event where students connected with GSAPP alumni. The first hour of the event focused on structured speed networking where seven students spoke with two alumni. The second hour was free form mingling, allowing alumni to reconnect with old classmates and students to meet peers in different GSAPP programs. 25

Additional comments about the Portfolio Review “The online sign up sheet is amazing!” “The intention is unclear. If it’s for merely portfolio suggestions - it should be clearly stated. If it includes internship opportunities for some firms then the firm interested should be articulate” “Engaging students in their third year with recent graduates on the subject of portfolio is an excellent idea. It would be a great way to invite recent graduates to the school and engage in informal dialogue about the direct transition from GSAPP to the outside world. Encouraging students to review each others work is also a great thing.” “The format would benefit from an improvement. It’s very static and rigid.”

Additional comments about the Architecture Career “Should happen earlier in the semester so firms with established internship programs can participate. Firms such as CookFox which, said they were hiring for the summer, had already met their quota.” “Unlike other departments, the Arch career fair is not a real career fair. A career fair should give you the opportunity to wander around and informally discuss the work of many firms with different people in order to get an idea of the breadth of office types. Having been to very successful career fairs in other departments at GSAPP, I think the architecture program should switch from an interview model where students only get to meet with one to two firms, to a traditional booth model that allows students to meet more people and send follow up emails.” “Brownie’s is not really an ideal and formal location.”

Additional comments about the Alt. Design Career “Needs to have more diverse firms-product design, toy design, interior design, film” “I love the idea of the alternative career fair but I had a schedule conflict.” “I got an internship with DDG partners” “Some company info session would be great, for both Arch Career Fair and Alt. Design Career Fair”
Instead of having an Arch. and Alt. Design Career Fair, do you think there should be an Internship Career Fair, targeted towards first and second-year students, and a Job Career Fair, targeted towards graduating students?

Additional comments.... “There should be an accessible list of alumni working at various firms. Sending a work sample to a random person or a robot (i.e. info@placeyouwantajob) is not an effective way to get a job. With such an extensive alumni network we should be able to request contacts at offices. Seniority should apply.” “Build a real strong alumni network that actually works would be definitely the best goal for Career Services” “You should provide stronger service like one to one job service to graduating students like other schools are doing. Comparing with other schools as GSD and Michigan, GSAPP career service is very weak. Don’t waste the great location of NYC.” “Thank you James and Francesca. This semester has been clearly been a tremendous amount of work for you guys. Everything has felt much better executed this year. Kudos.”
Career Services: Goals After reviewing the End-of-Year Survey results, the CS team created a list of goals for the 2015 - 2016 semesters that will ensure Career Services continued growth: 1) Develop an online alumni database specific to GSAPP 2) Develop a mentorship program between alumni and current students 3) Hold one networking event per semester 4) Garner increased involvement from GSAPP professors 5) Develop student-to-student relationships between GSAPP programs 6) Redefine the Portfolio Review by hosting a more informal event focused on peer-to-peer review 7) Redefine the Career Fairs by having two or three smaller events earlier in the spring semester 8) Offer an info session before the Portfolio Review and Career Fairs, lead by CS team 9) Implement a mobile career services platform 10) Offer mock interviews for students 11) Publish “How to Get a Job booklet with text by Paul Segal, that instructs students on the process of searching for a job, writing a resume and cover letter, how to interview, and networking tips 47
THANK YOU!
