Dot/Line

The Assignment The first stop on my journey was a dot/line project. The project introduced a term called gestalt. From my understanding, gestalt means something that abstract but could have a whole bigger meaning to it. For this assignment we had to create four abstract compositions with very little material. We had to use dots and lines for this project. With the dots and lines we were to choose four of the following words and create an abstract composition. The following words were stability, terror, joy, rejection, chaotic, freedom, energetic, exhaustion, oppression, desire, abundance, and scarcity. We were suppose to cut out dots and lines and

My Task In preparation for this part of my journey, I was to create five thumbnails of the words we chose. After giving a rough draft of the one of each thumbnail, were given the opportunity to choose the one we liked the best and make five more thumbnails with the materials we had used for those ones. I have chosen the words terror, freedom, rejection, and chaotic. Can you guess from the thumbnails which ones they are? On the right are my final compositions. These are to show what the reader what think when they see them.

Terror

Rejection

Freedom

Chaos

Looking Back When this part of my journey ended, my understanding of gestalt was the it is more of thinking outside of the back than being literal. I was told that my compositions that I was being literal with them. I don’t find making a well-crafted object very difficult, it mostly depends on if you are trying that is completely new which it was for me. This project made me realize that abstraction can mean something that is a whole lot bigger and perceive it as something that we can see. For me it was a little difficult to understand because I took the project literally. I could exercise ideas of gestalt by reading peoples body language and can perceive of what they could be feeling and what they are thinking.

Expresive Text

The Assignment The next stop on my voyage was to create four variations of a word that would the word would be associated with. The words that we could choose from were whole, dash, dive, drift, melt, and tear. For the assignment we were to brainstorm ideas of words the remind you of the word you have chosen. The word that I have chosen for the assignment was DASH.

The Task The for me was to think of words that remind me or are associated with the word DASH. When I would think of DASH I think of running, when think of running, I think of track and field, when I thought of track and field I thought of track spikes. I really thought of things that were related to running like legs, shoes and track lanes. I also thought of a dash of seasoning on a dessert. I decided to use the following materials for my word; pine needles, salt, shoes, and my legs in running apparel. I got the pine needles from pine trees that have fallen off and gathered a good amount. I used pine needles because they were spiky. I shaped the needles into the letters that I needed to create the word dash. After making the word I took a photo of it. The thing I did was get a bunch of salt from the Campus Center. The next thing I did Was pour the salt onto a sheet of black paper and then used a paintbrush to softly sweep the salt to form the word DASH then took a photo. For the shoes I took a pair of my running shoes and basketball shoes and went over Schuldes’ indoor track and used the lanes. I used the shoes to form the letters in the track lanes. I took one picture of each letter I formed in the lane and when I uploaded them to my laptop, I lined them up and printed them as if they were in and track event. The last thing I did was kind difficult to accomplish. I dressed myself as if I were going out for a run and used my legs to form the letters. I took photos of each of my poses and lined them up next to each other.

Looking Back Looking back on this stop on my journey, I found that hand lettering can express the persons creativity while digital lettering is more default and are used for more of the digital type of projects. What I learned about my hand lettering was very surprising. I learned that I could do more of this and that it was a lot of fun doing this project. I like to keep my hand lettering small for doodling and stuff that I just draw things fun the fun of it.

Object

Iterations

The Assignment My third stop on my journey was to achieve object iterations. For the assignment we had to choose and animal or object and make a grid of that animal or object and create different variations in media and to show creativity with our objects. It is also for us to create something that is unexpected but recognizable at the same time. The renditions we had to do were a continuous line, geometric, word collage, two master artists, and a collage. This assignment was also the first time of using Photoshop. The final project was to be in black and white.

My Task The goal was to make six or more different iterations on my animal. The animal that I have chosen was a fruit bat which is a very large, harmless bat. For the continuous line iteration I had used a technique that I used in a previous class which was ink blocking meaning that you kept drawing without lifting the pen. For my collage iteration I cut out a bunch of pictures of fruit that is kind of a pun and shaped all of them into a bat. The next iterations were a geometric, which I made my bat into basic shapes such as circles, triangles and squares. One of them I had drawn the other I cut paper and used them to make the bat. The type iteration too some time to find the right color with text. For the two master artists, I have chosen Andy Warhol and Fredrick Church. For the Andy Warhol iteration, I used Photoshop to make it. What I did was I copied the same bat image four times and changed the color scheme so that they were different colors. I have also done a drawing of an Andy Warhol iteration. I used three different colored pencils, one for dark, light and background. For the Fredrick Church, I sketched my bat with graphite pencils. When I was done with all of the iterations, I used Photoshop to make them all in black and white and added them to a grid on InDesign.

Looking Back After leaving this part of my journey, I learned this bat was not only big but also very cute when you look at it. It may look intimidating when seen but up close it is very harmless and innocent looking. The most challenging thing of media for me was working with of to go about doing a variation of Andy Warhol. The most enjoyable part of the project was the trying different things because it gave you so many choices to choose from. What I learned from Photoshop is that there so much you can do with it. It took some time for me to get used to but I think it is a pretty cool to use. I think use it to mess around so that I could see how many things I could work with on it. If I were to work on this object for another year, I would definitely use outside sources like oil pastels or paint. I would also make my bat a symbol that not all bats are annoying or pests and there are same that are very harmless like the fruit.

Tutorials

The Assignment This is the second to last stop on my journey. The assignment was to create a poster that of a step by step tutorial of something that we would teach to a group of people. The assignment is to express the knowledge of yours to people who want to learn. The tutorial could be something simple like how to make a ham sandwich or it could have been something that you were taught at a job.

My Task For this assignment I have chosen to do a tutorial on to do CPR and Rescue Breathing. I chose this because I have recently been certified as a lifeguard and wanted to show people how it is done. While going through all the steps, I have decided to use photographs to show a demonstration of what the right way for the maneuver. I decided to have two friends Adam and Noah to do the demonstrations and I would take a photo of it. After taking all the photos, I changed them to black and white. I used a red background and yellow lettering to make the poster pop out more. I placed the photographs in the appropriate steps.

Looking Back This is one of the last stops on my journey. If I were to teach to this to a group of peope want the proper training for CRP I would do so. This will give me an opportunity to teach someone how to save a life and not to take it as a joke.

Step 1) Be cautious with

your surroundings. We don’t want to slip or step on a sharp object.

Performing CPR/Rescue Breathing

Step 4) Before beginning CPR or rescue breathing, tell Step 3) Check to see if they the nearest person to call 911. They will come back and tell have a pulse and see if they are breathing. If the patient has that paramedics are on their way. a pulse but is not breathing, begin rescue breathing. If they do not have a pulse, begin CPR.

Step 5a) Begin CPR by doing 30 chest compressions. After every 30 chest compressions, give them 2 breaths and do another 30 compressions. It is 15 compressions for kids and infants. For adults, compressions are given with two hands in the middle of their ribcage. For kids it is one hand and for babies it is two fingers.

Step 6) If the patient were to start coughing or gaging, turn them over to their side. If there is solid food in their mouth, use your pinkie to scoop out the food.

Step 7) Continue doing chest compressions until the paramedics arrive. They will take over once they are ready.

9 1 1

Step 2) Take universal precaution. Make sure that your hands are clean or if at the pool, ALWAYS use latex gloves. Step 5b) Begin rescue breathing by giving them one breath every 5 seconds. It is every 3 seconds for kids and infants.

Step 8) Tell one of the paramedics of how many rounds of chest compressions you gave the patient until they have arrived.

Childrens Book

The Assignment My last stop was my most favorite part. The assignment was work with a partner from an education class and illustrate a children’s book that they have written. We were to meet with them and to read their text and illustrate the characters and the scenery of the book.

My Task My author gave a story all about dogs and the different kinds of them. When reading the text I can up with ideas for dogs that I can draw. I decided to draw a German Shepherd, Yorkie, Dachshund, Bulldog, Boston Terrier, and a Great Dane. I drew them with graphite and colored pencils then I edited them on Photoshop. The words that belong to the kind of dog I found the right font to make it represent it’s meaning. I also created tennis balls and bones and other things dogs like and added as details in the story. The title of the book is Dogs Can Be...

Looking Back Working with my parter I thought was gonna be a challenge because I thought they micro-manage my work and cause some conflicts but none of that happened. The strengths that my partner brought was that book was short and simple and was not like a full story so there were less things to plan for. There was nothing really challenging for this project. The only thing I would have done differently was the coloring of the pages and narrowed it down to two or three different colors. What inspired my was my love of dogs because I have one myself at home and it made really happy and really enjoy doing this project.
