Cover Story

The Case for Mobile Coffee With claims from Xpresso Mobile Cafe MD Jonathan Payne like “The best

coffee, the best vans and the best decision you’ll ever make”, we were after some more details. Here’s what we found. By Glenn Walford

W

ay back in 2002, Darren Schultz decided to take espresso coffee to people in their workplaces, as opposed to them having to go to a café to get their coffee. Thirteen years later after that idea, the business is wellrefined and established. With an exclusive licence to the Di Bella Coffee brand, and decked out to serve the nation from the back of their Mercedes Vito vans, the business is run on three crucial principles of friendliness, cleanliness and quality. Now franchising and producing a full range of hot and cold drinks, as well as a flexible variety of food options, Xpresso Mobile Cafe is expanding nationally. “Our competitor is the coffee machine in the workplace. That’s who we are competing against, and as part of our offer to meet that competition, we’ve added the sale of coffee pods for Nespresso compatible machines from our vans as well,” says Jonathan. 4

Innovation and Product

The Van

According to Jonathan, the concept of providing value for anyone contemplating the business is always top of mind. “We are all about specialty coffee, and with our close association with Di Bella Coffee, I believe we are best placed to deliver top-quality coffee to people wherever they may be.” Innovating with products to the marketplace, and the way in which they deliver them, is another key aspect to the business, and Jonathan expands on this. “No other mobile coffee operation can bring to the marketplace the range of products we are able offer, primarily due to our association with Di Bella Coffee. Our Cold Brew ‘Kick’ coffee canned products, which are lactose and dairy free, our coffee pods, our coffee bean display cabinet for sale of bags of freshly ground coffee, and our commitment to Direct Trade coffee — from crop to cup, where all stages of farming and production are ethically run.” “As for the product, of course, we have the hot and cold drink range, but importantly our food fits the market it’s in. Firstly, we don’t sell our franchisee’s food. We help

them source quality suppliers for the right products for their market – this means better margins for them, as there is no markup from us. Secondly, our food offer is simple, cold food only, and franchisees can select what their marketplace wants and displayed in a dedicated refrigerator.” “We also make sure the money taking is simple as well with a supplier dedicated to setting up our franchise owners’ tap-and-pay service using Bluetooth to iPhone with an app to either tap or swipe for customer payments.”

“We believe that the old-fashioned ‘loyalty’ card is redundant and historic. So we’ve invested in and implemented technology through the ‘Stamp Me’ company app that enables our franchise owners to build a database of customers and to send push messages to them with offers and the like.” Being a mobile coffee business, the van is obviously a big part of the success of the business, and I asked Jonathan to talk us briefly through their van set up. “We use the Mercedes Benz Vito, a 3-seat, automatic diesel van. We chose this, as it is safe, reliable and comfortable, as well as being of a quality that is consistent with our brand. The first service is not until 30,000 km, and the power source for the machinery is a combination gas/inverter/battery power, so there is no need to plug into power at an event. All of this makes operation easier and keeps ongoing costs down.”

Getting Started

How you go from no experience in any business to owning and running one is a big step, so Jonathan explained how they do this at Xpresso Mobile Cafe. “Over 3 weeks, we train you fully in every aspect of the business operation itself such as coffee, technical details and marketing, etc., and no specific experience is necessary. However, having a customer service or sales background is ideal, as you are the face of your business for sure.” “A major part of the training is implementation out on the road together where we help build your key Monday-to-Friday business, and you also have the ability to do events anywhere as well. We give big territories to our franchisees, as well as a marketing pack that includes the 1300 number for central bookings, website, tables, chairs, umbrella, breeze barrier as well as a fully integrated social media management system using Facebook and Twitter.” “Our business affords an excellent work-life balance, with the key ability to work flexible hours close to home.” If you would like more information on Xpresso Mobile Cafe, you can find out more at www.xpressocoffee.com.au or contact 1300 655 559. Big Ticket Selling:

Navigating the Prickly Patch Selling what you’ve got into large organisations need not be a reason to stress if you follow some key principles. By Trent Leyshan

P

olitics, ego battles and inconsistency. Starting today, changing direction tomorrow, stakeholders shifting, relationships sliding sideways: all signs you are deeply immersed in the prickly patch, with no way out. And let’s not forget (insert the cackle of a cartoon villain “Bahahah!”) … Scope creep! Retreat, retreat! I’m being a tad melodramatic. Yes, of course, there are monumental payoffs when you get through the thorns into the safe inner sanctum of trust when selling a big project into a large company. This can take many years and a multitude of stakeholders pushing for you and grinding your solution in from multiple angles. But wait, did you hear, the CEO just resigned?! Okay back into the patch we march. New relationships, fresh internal players jostling for position. There goes another twelve months, not to mention new competitors to overcome. Game on. The patch sounds like a intense place doesn’t it? Well it’s not just one patch; it’s many small patches that create a large super-patch. Each patch has a protector, a defender of sorts. It’s likely the patch protectors rarely communicate with other protectors. All makes navigating the prickly internal workings of a large corporation challenging. And when you do get your deal over the line, there’s more potentially skin-ripping experiences on their way, you can bet on that. I’ve spent the good part of a career selling solutions

“It’s not just one patch; it’s many small patches that create a large super-patch. Each patch has a protector, a defender of sorts.” 14

into large organisations, and over half of my clients at BOOM! sell in B2B environments, so over the journey I’ve learned a thing or two about the prickly patch. Let me be frank, I love it in the patch! I have lost skin over the years. I’ve almost lost an eye, yet the thrill of walking thorough the big doors, unarmed and winning — is still exhilarating.

Seven Steps for Successful Selling into Large Organisations:

1

Be patient, be resilient. The bigger the patch, the more prickly and dense. A short-term approach rarely cuts through. You’ll need to augment your short-term objectives with a long lens. When not winning or pitching, use this time to learn and build insight: the company, competitors, market and stakeholders. Arm yourself with insight as you slowly cut through and build cred and your network.

2

Leverage relationships. You won’t get far in any company without relationships, but not just any relationship, credible relationships with people of genuine influence (crucial influencers) who can, over time, move you through the outer layers into the inner sanctum into where the key decisions are made.

3

6

4

7

Back the right horse. In the upper layers of management, personalities are big and often brutal. Your (critical influencers) must be able to not just survive medium/long-term but also play the game and win. Some will lose, so there goes your investment and channel through. Yet, the right champions, over time, will be promoted and push through. Empower them and they will empower you.

Think big, but nothing is too small. Any opportunity is a good opportunity to begin with, even if it costs you. To align multiple stakeholders in different areas, you need to deliver results, not just once but across multiple patches to ensure super-buy-in. This will lead to bigger opportunities and larger projects downstream. Get your hands dirty.

5

When you get your shot, aim straight and deliver. One false move or failure can bring many years of hard work undone. Don’t over-sell, keep delivering on your promises. Deliver and keep delivering for yourself, your stakeholders and the organisation. Some stakeholders will go out on a limb for you, so delivering helps them and builds cred, and it helps you. Don’t let them down.

Complacency is failure; keep building. This applies to relationships and also your solution. People come and go, roles change, business units dissolve, technology evolves, nothing is static. Stay on your toes, search for intel to help you and the stakeholder to grow and improve. If you fall asleep in the patch, you will wake up with a thorn in your ass. This is not pleasant and hard to remove. #BOOM!

Don’t buy-in, but sell-in. Don’t buy-in to the internal politics. This is not your business, granted, you have to back the right horses, but don’t overstate your positive no matter how confident you are. Instead, keep promoting your message internally and keep driving the cause with a consistent theme, values and energy.

Franchising Code

The New Franchising Code Looking to buy a franchise in 2015? There are several important changes to the Franchising Code of Conduct you need to know about. By Dr. Michael Schaper

T

he mandatory Code sets out the rights and obligations of both franchisors and franchisees.

Disclosure. The Code now requires franchisors to provide prospective franchisees with a short information statement outlining the risks and rewards of franchising. The information statement is a starting point rather than a complete guide to franchising and should be combined with independent legal, accounting and business advice. There must also be additional disclosure about the ability of the franchisor and a franchisee to sell online.

Good Faith Obligation. There is a new

obligation under the Code to act in good faith. This requires both parties to a franchise agreement to remain loyal to the contract they have entered into. Your conduct may lack good faith if you act dishonestly, for an ulterior motive or in a way that undermines or denies the other party the benefits of the contract. Good faith does not prevent the franchisor from acting in their legitimate commercial interests when dealing with you. Dr. Michael Schaper is the Deputy Chair of the ACCC, an independent Commonwealth statutory authority. The ACCC enforces and encourages compliance with the Competition and Consumer Act 2010, which includes the mandatory Franchising Code of Conduct.

16

FRANCHISE BUYER

February-March 2015

Marketing Funds. There are new rules that increase transparency around franchise marketing funds. The Code states that marketing fees paid by franchisees must only be used to meet certain expenses, including ‘legitimate marketing or advertising expenses’. Capital Expenditure. While there are

exceptions, the new Code restricts franchisors from imposing significant capital expenditure on franchisees (e.g., an expensive refurbishment or new equipment), except in certain circumstances.

New Penalties and Infringement Notices. The Australian Competition and Consumer

Commission (ACCC) has new powers to issue infringement notices of $8,500 for body corporates ($1,700 for individuals and other entities) and seek penalties of up to $51,000 in court for serious breaches of certain Code provisions. These changes will go unnoticed by franchisors and franchisees who do the right thing. However, the new powers will play an important role in achieving compliance with the Code. The ACCC will be focusing on particularly egregious conduct, and as always, we will take a common sense approach to enforcing the Code. General information on the Code is available at www.accc.gov.au/franchisingcode or by calling the ACCC Small Business Helpline on 1300 302 021. However, you should seek legal advice if you are still uncertain about your individual rights and obligations under the new Code.

a Porchetta is celebrating its 30th birthday this year and is commencing a focused drive to national restaurant expansion. Sara Pantaleo, CEO of La Porchetta, explained recently that underpinning this expansion is that the hospitality industry is enjoying impressive growth on a national scale. Sara further adds that a key for the chain is that “… customers know they will consistently get great meals, made with fresh, quality ingredients and warm service in a great atmosphere. It’s the family-like warmth and hospitality that keep our customers coming back. And we are more than just a dinner venue. La Porchetta also caters for brunch, lunch, coffee breaks and functions. We continue to innovate to ensure the brand stays connected to its loyal customers and attract new ones. This may be through menu updates to reflect changing tastes or an app so customers can easily find their nearest restaurant. We work hard to ensure we stay ahead of the game.”

What do franchisees say about La Porchetta? Franchisee Ronnie Barrese and his business partner Tony Impeduglia joined La Porchetta in 1996 and they have owned four successive restaurants since. “We bought into the La Porchetta brand because it is a family-oriented business,” said Ronnie. “We wanted to be part of a growing group with great back-of-house support. All the franchisees are very supportive of each other and we think of ourselves as a La Porchetta family.” Also, according to Sara, a number of franchisees go on to open a second and even third restaurant. Jason Krainski and Stephen Montebello bought their first La Porchetta in Rosebud, Victoria, in 2005. They recently opened a second restaurant in nearby Hastings. Firm friends since they played footy together in the under 12s, they have defied all popular ideas about mixing friendship with business. “We chose La Porchetta because we both ate there as kids,” said Stephen. “It was a brand we knew and trusted and now we’re part of it, we can see that one reason for its success is the fantastic training and support you get from support office. When you have a proven system with good policies and procedures and that’s backed by great training, you can step away and have a life-work balance. When you find that balance, you come back to work refreshed and ready to grow the business even more.” For further information, contact us at (03) 9460 6700 or franchising@laporchetta.com.au .

The Pros and Cons of Buying a Franchise

When buying a franchise, especially if it is your first, it is essential to weigh up the pros and cons. It can be easy to listen to the spin and get caught up in the brand when buying a franchise. Emma Webb gives some of the aspects to both sides of the story. By Emma Webb

The Positives

The Negatives

3

Less Freedom. A franchise can be restricting for a franchisee, as they are often not permitted to sway from the systems that have been put in place. For example, if a franchisee thinks there is a better way of engaging customers or a new product they would like to sell, it is unlikely they will be able to change the system. While recommendations may be taken by franchisors, the system is in place for all franchisees to follow and it can be difficult to change it.

The Brand. Depending on which franchise you choose to invest in, you may be buying into a brand with an outstanding reputation and existing customer base. Here, you have the opportunity to cash in on the hard work of others and, given you follow the system, tap into the already established customer base for your own benefit.

3

The Support and Training. Most franchises will come with a support team who are there to make setting up and running your franchise easier. They will train you in the day-to-day running of your business, support you if times get tough, assist you in marketing your business effectively and often visit your site regularly to ensure you are on track. With a franchise, you are never running your business completely on your own.

7

7

Ongoing Payments. Buying a franchise can be an expensive initial cost and that is not where it ends. Royalties and ongoing fees are often paid to the franchisor for the services they provide and simply for being a part of their brand. While franchisees do get something for the money they are outlaying, such as marketing materials and so on, these ongoing payments would often be avoided in a stand-alone business.

3The System. When buying a stand-alone business 7 One Franchisee Can Ruin It All. When buying

or starting your own, it is up to you to develop the systems for running that business. This includes policies and procedures, brand standards, operating systems and stock control methods. With a franchise, this is all taken care of. With a good franchise, these systems have already been proven to work effectively — all you have to do is learn how to use them.

into a franchise brand you are also putting your trust in the franchisor and other franchisees to run their business well. While things may be running well for your business, it only takes the franchisor to be put in a bad light for things to go south for you. If a customer has a bad experience at another site, with another franchisee, this can impact on your business, no matter how well your business is run.

Degani Coffee: The Flexible Franchise Difference Victorian people would probably recognize the Degani brand, which is prominent in Australia’s ‘coffee capital’. Now, the rest of the country gets its turn. By Glenn Walford

I

f you are not in Victoria, you may not have heard of Degani Coffee with their 70-store presence alone in that state. Expectation is that you will certainly be hearing a lot more of them in the future right across the country. We recently met with Tanya Kanaris, Franchise Development Manager of Degani, to tell us a little about the business and their approach to expansion and franchising in particular.

20

What is a brief history of the brand? “The first Degani café opened its doors in 1999 in the inner northern suburb of Clifton Hill in Melbourne. This store was a small bakery café that fast developed a reputation worth capitalizing on. The founder George Pezaros recognized the café’s potential and worked to enhance the operation to ensure people throughout Melbourne could embrace a new coffee brand whilst enjoying the gourmet style of food already served.”

You mention ‘flexible’ franchising as a key point of difference. What does that mean? “Flexible franchising doesn’t involve the word ‘no’. The relationship with our franchise partners is based on collaboration and partnership. Our business model has room for all experience levels, all clientele and all skill levels. The franchise business model is designed to suit the individual store whilst maintaining brand integrity.”

Where are your key areas targeted for expansion? “Our aim is to establish a strong footprint in all capital cities across the country. Currently, we are in the final stages of opening cafés in Brisbane, Sydney and Perth. These are important landmarks for our brand, as it will give many more people the opportunity to see for themselves the Degani difference.”

Who makes a good Degani franchisee? Proactive, enthusiastic team players with a love of coffee and good-quality food. We also like to describe our ideal business owners as people who are ‘fearless’ in retail and when delivering excellent customer service. That says a lot about the type of people who are great in this business.” Find out more about the Degani business at www.degani.com.au or call 1300 334 264.

Sure Fire Way to Generate Targeted Traffic to Your Business Instantly

Want to know how to ‘turn the tap on’ for leads into your business?

O

ne of the most important elements of any business is your ability to generate targeted web traffic and leads to your business. Business can struggle for a variety of reasons, a major one being not enough leads turning into customers walking in the door and purchasing product or services. So, what is the fastest way to generate targeted traffic and leads for your franchise? Google AdWords! Google AdWords is an online advertising service that is perfect for generating immediate traffic, leads and sales. This service is offered by Google, Inc. It enables any business owner the opportunity to place advertising text of their choice (with some Google terms limitations) with offers and the like above, below, or beside the list of search results Google displays for a specific keyword or keyword phrase. The position in which the advertising copy is placed is determined by copy ‘relevancy’ of the search query and the ‘quality score’ of your campaign. Once the ad is displayed and a prospect clicks on the ad, you will need to pay Google for this click. This is known as pay per click (PPC). From our experience, advertising via Google AdWords has its advantages and disadvantages.

By John Mu

Main advantages:

3 The greatest advantage is that Google AdWords ads once 3 3 3 3 3

set up can be live within a few hours. This means your business can immediately be generating targeted traffic and leads. You are able to control your costs by setting budgets. You can target prospects from specific geographic locations. It allows for mobile targeting. You can specify when you want your ads to show up. Your marketing spend can be quantified.

Main disadvantages: 7 7

Every click costs you money whether you make a sale or not. Some people do not like clicking on Ads.

We still recommend Google AdWords to be just one part of your marketing strategies in the marketplace. You can see in the example image for one of our clients that our use of Google AdWords and search engine optimization (SEO) are both playing their part in dominating the results. We are an accredited Google partner. New York Slice Pizzeria

U

Todd McGregor of New York Slice Pizzeria opens our eyes a little more into the business. By Glenn Walford

ndeniably, Todd is passionate about pizza and the opportunity he sees in the market for his 12-year-old five-store business. In a marketplace with what seems like more than enough pizza offerings, I asked the key question, “Where is your opportunity, and how are you different?” His answer surprised a little and dictated much of the remaining conversation. Grabbing his iPhone, he was very keen to answer it by showing some local industry research to me. “The Australian pizza industry is a $3.6 billion business annually and the ‘big 4’ pizza companies only have 32% of the market.” He continued, “That means the majority of the market is still made up of single-store operations spread across the country, leaving a market that has space for strong brands and concepts with an alternate take on the ‘standard’ offerings.”

“This gives owners up to an 80% savings in labour cost compared to ‘standard’ pizza store models.” Todd believes that this is the fundamental difference of his business to others. “Let the owners focus on driving sales, not bashing dough and counting stock.”

State and Local Opportunities

In its expansion, New York Slice Pizzeria is combining a franchise expansion approach by offering single-store locations as well as opportunities to acquire the rights to entire regions and major cities. “We’re looking for people who want to be involved at the single-store level for themselves as well as for entrepreneurial people who have the ability and drive to take on an entire city or region and grow that as their own,” says Todd. For information on New York Slice Pizzeria, you can make contact direct at franchising@newyorkslice.com.au or visit their website at www.newyorkslice.com.au.

The Concept

Todd explains further, “We are the home of the authentic New York-style pizza by the slice. Our concept is borne out of the small-sized, fast transaction model we see in New York City, which has 1,600 pizza shops alone. We can serve people in as little as 90 seconds, and as an example, on a Saturday evening in some of our locations, we serve in excess of 1,000 people.”

The Business

“We only need a small store space to work out of that has high foot traffic walking past it. Our stores can be as small as 15 square metres in size, keeping our fitout costs low, and due to a centralised production model, we typically have only one or two staff members operating them.”

Options for Financing Your Business Purchase James Scurr of Cashflow It® takes us through the options of obtaining finance for your business purchase. By James Scurr

S

tarting any business or franchise poses great challenges to every entrepreneur. The total amount of money that you need to put into your franchise is a major consideration and depends on the nature of your enterprise. During the startup stages, your cash flows are often expended quicker than you plan as unexpected costs arise. However, you can find the business finance needed for your newly established franchise. There are many types of business finance available for your franchise, and it can be tailor-made for your specific needs. Debt Finance. One option is debt finance from banks and financial institutions. These loans come with a payment obligation schedule and a fixed interest rate depending on your chosen terms (either short-term or long-term payments). An established relationship with your bank is advantageous before attempting to secure a loan for your franchise. Debt finance usually requires personal collateral as security, such as your home. Grants. Another finance option is through grants, especially if you are establishing a technology-oriented franchise. Grant opportunities given by governments

or by private investors are highly competitive because they are giving you free money. These grants correspond with strict guidelines, though, and can have ongoing obligations on you depending on the type of grant. Equity Finance. This option is simply taking funds in exchange for a share in the ownership of your franchise. Equity finance generally does not involve you taking on debt or re-paying the money for a specific period. The downside of equity finance is that you do not have full control of your business. The “additional” investors mean you won’t have 100% ownership of your small business. Equipment Finance. Franchise equipment finance is another option available to wouldbe franchisees trying to secure their new small business. Equipment finance is a great way to acquire the equipment needed in your franchise. Typically, you won’t need to put up assets like your home as collateral because the equipment funder will use the equipment itself as security. Equipment finance also gives you numerous flexible options around choosing terms, payouts, ownership or even returning your equipment. Do your research and learn from other franchisees, so that you will be guided on what is best for your particular franchise’s success and growth.

Innovating

Who’d a Thunk?

I

By Steve Finn

s anyone else fed up with hearing about how bad things are? Let’s get on with it and start focusing on what we can do to get through tough times and thrive. Some entrepreneurs have disrupted the business world and created a new normal. Read on to learn about different innovative ways to create, or restore, a profitable business with this new normal. Who would have thought that companies around the globe would trust so many of their files to live in the cloud? Dropbox, now a $4 billion company, was struggling to find new users in 2008. After almost a year of unsuccessful marketing campaigns, founder Drew Houston decided to try something different and made a simple, four-minute video showing off how Dropbox worked. The video was tailored to target the digg.com community to whom it was being shown. It was full of inside jokes, and by the next day, they had 70,000 new signups! Crowdfunding is a way of raising capital by asking a large amount of people for a small contribution each. Until recently, financing a business involved asking a few people for large amounts of money. Crowdfunding flips this idea by using the Internet to talk to millions of potential contributors. Ryan Grepper, an inventor, is the new King of Kickstarter Crowdfunding. Who would have thought his high-tech Esky could raise over AUD 16 million in funding, garner the attention of 60,000 contributors and cause backyard inventors to dream about achieving the same success? Now you just need that $16 million dollar idea!

Or you could take a great existing idea and buy a business. Fifty years ago, the idea of serving people food through a car window sounded absurd; yet, look at how profitable fast-food business are today. Imagine what crazy idea will be mainstream in the future. Many businesses today are attempting these innovative, unique concepts, and they are proving to be both amusing and somewhat profitable. Ten years ago, Steven and Jason Parker began a pet-sitting business at a very young age. In 2002, they decided to take things to the next level. After researching for three years, they purchased and renovated a commercial business and turned it into the first K9 Resort. In 2010, they franchised their idea and now have seven franchises, all of which have been featured on various news platforms such as CNBC, Yahoo!, Wall Street Journal, The Huffington Post, Fox Business, Forbes, Entrepreneur and more. While the previous business profited off of human’s love for their four-legged companions, this next unique business opportunity decided to capitalise off of cereal. Cereality is the only drive-through outlet in the world where you can find all of your favourite brands of cereal with different toppings. They currently have two U.S. outlets with franchise opportunities available. Cereality was created to cater to a market obsessed with personalisation whether it be frozen yoghurt toppings, coffee or cereal! Would you love to start your own business, but you don’t have as interesting of an idea as a K9 Resort or cereal drive-through? There are other options for anyone looking to invest into a new and exciting business venture. Some people become profitable business owners by creating new concepts and some prefer to purchase something with proven systems, brand and track record. Regardless of which path you take, it is time to ask yourself: What will make you the happiest and most fulfilled?
