R

esearching the ideal business or franchise for you to realize your dream is serious business. At least it should be. The research phase of buying a franchise determines if that business will be suitable for you and the franchisor. This decision has implications many, many years down the track for both of you. Thus, the research phase is crucial to your success. What better way of conducting research as part of your “body of research work” but by talking with your choice of up to more than 100 franchise companies all in one room? Franchise expos are growing again in franchise sales, but more on that later.

Cover Story Don’t Get “Romanced” by the Consumer Side Don Meij, CEO of Domino’s Pizza, has been previously well quoted on his concern here, and it is a timely reminder. “I am very aware that one of the things about franchising is that it can get a little romantic for you when you are actually considering buying one. … (a potential buyer’s) first involvement with (the brand) is as a consumer, and this potentially can mean that they have really more bought into the ‘marketed’ side of that brand, whereas behind the scenes it is not as romantic as the end use/consumer experience they would have had as a customer.” Essentially, Meij’s take on it has been that good franchisors will recognize this and make certain you know exactly what is required day-to-day, in rolling your sleeves up and working hard in your business to achieve success.

Do Your Due Diligence Anecdotally, we know of many involved in franchising hearing stories of people buying businesses and doing little research into the business itself before doing so. This is truly a recipe for a high probability of disappointment and/ or failure. Kate Groom of Smart Franchise has firm opinions and provides direction on due diligence. “Due diligence is not just about doing your own checks on the franchise. It also includes having an ‘expert’ look over the financials. The right person can help you see clearly what the business will cost and what sales you need to pay the bills, to provide a decent living and hopefully to add value to the business. If you do not do this, things can go very wrong. “ Unfortunately, the nature of business means that it will be dotted with success AND failure. Due diligence, according to Kate, gives you the best chance to increase your chances of a good fit and ultimately success. “I am thinking of the franchise owner who ‘took a guess’ at how much money he needed. He was wrong. Three months into the business, he was unable to pay his loans, rent and living expenses. Advice from the right, independent expert could have helped him see that he could not afford the risk. On the other hand, we have worked with a savvy professional who is buying into one of the leading brands. She has heaps of business experience, but knows she needs an accountant to advise her on the financial side of the deal. She is investing over $500,000, and nobody in their right mind would do that without consulting an accountant who actually understands and works in franchising.”

Franchise Expos — A Good Place to Research For many years through the late 1980s and 1990s and right into the last decade, face-to-face franchise expos

dotted the country and overflowed with brands and potential buyers. The relatively more recent shift to a volume of information about brands being available online saw faceto-face expos diminish in attractiveness to some. However, it is apparent that the concept is experiencing a resurgence in relevance to buyers AND sellers. No better proof to this than seeing expos in Melbourne and Sydney sold out for space this year and the return to the calendar of an event to Perth in May next year. This brings the Franchising & Business Opportunities Expo series to four events across the country again. “The time is right, and the team is very excited about working with exhibitors and the Franchise Council of Australia to make it a professional and relevant event that showcases the opportunities presented by franchising,” says Exhibition Manager Fiona Stacey. “The mining boom may have slowed, but Perth remains a busy and cosmopolitan city,” she says. “The only difference is that there are now thousands of highly qualified and resourced people seeking to work for themselves. Exhibitors have asked for focused and low-cost event to access this market.” However, expos are not just a tyre-kicking, “show bag” grabbing opportunity for you if you are considering buying a franchise. Use them for the purpose they were designed — to showcase opportunities to give a taste of what is in the market as well as the ability to speak in person at length with the franchisor. Both are useful at any stage in your process. Darryn McCauliffe of FRANdata explains, “Franchise expos provide a great opportunity to screen many brands quickly. Asking the right questions can give an initial feel for transparency, credibility and the brand culture.” Fiona agrees, “Of course, a lot of this information is available online, but nothing can replace the value of meeting someone face-to-face to discuss your dream business. Visitors can check out all the opportunities and ask the hard questions. At the same time, exhibitors can identify their best prospects. It is a really efficient way to bring the right people together.” The Franchising & Business Opportunities Expo will be running at the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre on 6-7 May 2016. Entry is open to anyone looking to get into business for him/herself. For more information, call Specialised Events on (03) 9999 5460 or visit the show website at www.franchisingexpo.com.au.

Canstar Blue Most Satisfied Customers Award — Coffee Shop Chains

Canstar Blue understands the importance of a quality cup of coffee. Each year, Canstar Blue endeavors to find out what Aussies think about their coffee shop chain of choice to help them get the best bang for your buck. For 2015, Donut King is the recipient of the Canstar Blue Most Satisfied Customers Award — Coffee Shop Chains. Sixty-eight percent of surveyed Aussies choose their coffee shop based on its food options, which makes Donut King particularly appealing to coffee drinkers. Donut King was also rated 5 stars for value for money, customer service, quality of food, loyalty program and consistency across stores. A number of other coffee shop chains received a rating of 4 stars for overall customer satisfaction. Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to regularly survey 2,500 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have visited a coffee shop chain in the last 6 months; in this case, 1,794 customers. Each brand must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative, and it should be noted that brands receiving 3 stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least 6 out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. Donut King is the 2015 award winner for coffee shop chains, with 5-star ratings in 6 out of 8 research categories. Zarraffa’s Coffee was rated 4 stars for overall satisfaction and received top marks for consistency and taste of coffee. Michel’s Patisserie can definitely make a great cup of coffee, receiving 4 stars across every category. Muffin Break was the award winner for coffee shop chains in the previous 3 years and once again performed well with a strong set of results across the board. Starbucks was rated 4 stars for overall customer satisfaction, customer service, quality of food, loyalty program and consistency and 3 stars for taste of coffee, taste of other drinks and value for money. Jamaica Blue received a consistent 4-star rating across each criterion. Dôme also performed well with 4 stars across the board. Gloria Jean’s Coffee received 4 stars across the board, except when it comes to value for money, scoring 3 stars. The Coffee Club was rated 4 stars in overall satisfaction, customer service, taste of coffee, taste of other drinks and quality of food and 3 stars for value for money, loyalty program and consistency across stores. McCafé was rated 3 stars in overall satisfaction, taste of coffee, taste of other drinks, quality of food, loyalty program and consistency across stores and 4 stars for value for money and customer service. Hudsons Coffee was rated 3 stars consistently across each criteria. www.canstarblue.com.au

Frosty Boy Receives Seal of Excellence

Frozen dessert and beverage manufacturer Frosty Boy Australia received an excellent rating in its Safe Quality Food audit. The rating was acquired by Frosty Boy’s new facility in Yatala, Queensland, and covers all its products, including dairy powders, creams, beverages, bases, gelato, jellies and soft serve. The company attributes its recent investment in the purpose-built manufacturing facility, as well as prioritising the safety of food, to the positive feedback. Melbournians Enjoying Delights of Malaysian Franchise OLDTOWN White Coffee; More Outlets Planned Nationally

M

elbournians are enjoying the flavours and cuisine of Malaysian franchise OLDTOWN White Coffee, as interest and word of mouth spread since its opening in August by Alias Haji Ahmad, Secretary General of Malaysia’s Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism. Located at 303 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne CBD, the all new-new concept has been especially designed for the Australian market whilst maintaining its authentic Malaysian taste profile with an Ipoh-style twist. In addition, OLDTOWN Melbourne is the pilot for an ambitious national expansion strategy that will see outlets opening across the country over the next 10 years. OLDTOWN currently operates 242 outlets, of which 210 are in Malaysia and the remaining in Singapore, Indonesia and China. Since its official opening, Melbournians and Malaysian-born residents, especially students, have made their way to the restaurant for a delightful OLDTOWN Signature White Coffee, Ipoh Chicken Hor Fun or Nasi Lemak. Trade Commissioner to Australia, Noor Hayati, confirmed that MATRADE was consulted actively by OLDTOWN for information and invaluable insight into the Australian marketplace. “The Australian F&B sector has seen Malaysian restaurants growing in number across Australian cities, as more and more consumers enjoy the special culinary flavours and delights of Malaysia’s unique cuisine,” said Hayati. “The OLDTOWN franchise model has enjoyed much success since it expanded operations internationally and we are confident it will be well received in Australia.” Malaysia’s economy supports a vibrant SME sector and the domestic franchise sector has been growing rapidly over the years as an attractive option for Malaysians seeking to start and manage their own businesses. As of August 2014, Malaysian homegrown franchising system represented 70% of the total number of franchise systems in the country. The balance being provided from overseasowned franchise operations. With over 700 registered franchise systems and more than 6,000 franchising outlets in the market, Malaysia has strength in various franchising

sectors, such as in food and beverage, automotive, clothing and accessories, learning centres and nursery, retailing and supermarket, healthcare and beauty care, IT and telecommunication, hotels and tourism agencies and printing. The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism projected the franchise industry to make up 9.4% of Malaysia’s GDP by 2020 from 2.2% in 2010. The industry is also supported by Malaysia’s National Franchise Development Blueprint. Hayati concluded, “Malaysia’s franchising sector has responded positively to the National Franchised Development Blueprint, growing rapidly over the years driven by the potential in the domestic market. OLDTOWN White Coffee is a role model of a successful Malaysian business that is taking Malaysia’s unique cuisine and culture to the world as well as capitalising on its entrepreneurial strengths to broaden its commercial horizon into overseas markets. Australians can expect to see many more OLDTOWN White Coffee outlets in street or mall in their state capital city in the not too distant future.” www.matrade.gov.my www.FranchiseBuyer.com.au • August 2015 •

Xpresso Mobile Cafe: Coffee Franchise Sees Strong Growth at Mid-Year

Glenn Walford of Franchise Buyer speaks once again with Jonathan Payne, Managing Director of Xpresso Mobile Cafe, about the franchise’s progress this 2015.

W

hen Payne previously claimed the franchise to be “the best coffee, the best vans and the best decision you will ever make”, he and his team made sure that it will become truth and reality. Xpresso Mobile Cafe is having a banner year of 2015 on all forefronts. In the past 6 months alone, the mobile coffee franchise has already experienced 60% growth, which signals a strong early projected growth in the first quarter of next year. The franchise expects to sign an additional 7 franchise agreements by the year’s end in addition to its current 18 mobile franchises to make it to 25 vans on the ground before 2016. “This year is our biggest year yet,” said Payne. He attributes the solid mid-year growth achievement in large part to the franchise’s brand positioning that helps attract more customers for franchisees amongst other things. Payne believes that there is very strong growth for the franchise in Brisbane, in Sydney and even in Adelaide. He also mentions that what they have in Melbourne is really exciting, as Melbourne is an important market for Xpresso. Their success is, of course, according to Payne, also driven from having “the best franchisees in the coffee industry.” Xpresso Mobile Cafe continues to combine excellent service and great coffee with cutting-edge technology. As a 16

mobile coffee business, the van is obviously a big part of the operations of the franchise. With this, Payne has something new to tell, “We have new vans. Mercedes Benz is launching new Vito range of vans, being 3-seat, automatic diesel vans, and I had the privilege of sitting in one a few weeks ago. The technology and safety aspects of them are extraordinary, and it will be using significantly less fuel, which lowers the running costs of the business. This vehicle quality in part represents what we are all about as a business, and with the first new Mercedes heading to Adelaide very shortly, which is all included in the business purchase price, we are really excited about where we are all headed together.” For more information about Xpresso Mobile Cafe, a premium mobile coffee franchise system in Australia, visit www.xpressocoffee.com.au or contact 1300-655-559.

Outsourcing & Workforce

Outsourcing Isn’t About Laziness

Efficiency of resources is king when it comes to growing a business, so it is time to get with the outsourcing program. By Chris Whitrod

I

t is not the first time I hear someone say that business owners outsource work because they are lazy. They don’t want to put in the effort. They don’t care about delivering high-quality products or services. Reality contradicts every single one of those claims. Let me explain. Business owners who outsource are, in fact, very energetic and hardworking. They outsource because they want to achieve so many things, reach goals so important that they have to lengthen their day, to expand time. So far, science did not come up with a solution for this, so those business owners use what they can — they pay for other people’s time and skills. They need an affordable way to duplicate their attention and effort without subtracting themselves from their personal lives. Outsourcing offers a competitive advantage to any new business that wants to grow fast and make an impact. Business owners delegate some tasks not because they hate doing a particular type of work but because they understand that strategic thinking and the time spent finding partners are more profitable than mundane tasks. The benefits of spending time consulting a big client or preparing for a speaking gig are far more significant than what it can be achieved using the same time for scheduling

social media content for publication, doing data scrubbing or answering support tickets. It has nothing to do with what an entrepreneur likes or hates doing; it is all about what it makes sense from a financial point to delegate. No matter how good someone is in his or her profession, the lack of enough time will always lead to poor quality work. Business owners understand this, and they outsource the positions they do not have the time to handle inside their organisation to allocate enough resources for their craft/skill/ knowledge — the thing that allowed them to start a business in the first place. This way everyone wins. If a marketing consultant spends time doing consulting work and not trying to fix bugs on the company website or manage the company’s social media accounts, things work the way they should. The quality of the consulting work, the website and the content published through social media will all be first-rate. Chris Whitrod is the owner and managing director of Remote Workmate. Marketing

“Sampling” Can Be One of Your Most Powerful Marketing Tools

Sampling can be one of your most powerful marketing tools, but hardly anyone does it. John Dwyer explains why this should not be case for your business. By John Dwyer

I

was buying some bread rolls at the local Bakers Delight bakery this week and was surprised to be offered a sample of a new “Tiger Bread” product by the sales assistant. While taking my money for the packet of bread rolls I was purchasing, the young lady asked, “Would you like a complimentary sample bag of some slices of our brand-new Tiger Bread product?” — to which, of course, I replied, “Thank you.” The reason I’m making a big deal at what may appear to be a simple “sampling exercise” is that hardly any business does this. Yet, “sampling” is one of the most powerful marketing tactics any business can implement. Movie studios have been doing it for years with their “teaser trailers”, where they give you a taste for the fulllength movie by providing snippets that give you a pretty good idea of what to expect in the full movie. Food manufacturers have been using the technique for decades. Without such “taste testing”, most consumers would never likely consider swapping from the brand they are currently

18

FRANCHISE BUYER

• August 2015 • www.FranchiseBuyer.com.au

loyal to. Remember, we are all “creatures of habit”, and with over 3,000 advertising messages hitting us every day, the “sampling” of an alternative product can often be the “clutter-buster technique” that cuts through. Providing a prospect with a no-risk, no-cost opportunity to break away from “the norm” just might be the “cut-through” you have been looking for.

How Can You Provide “Sampling” of Your Product or Service In my own case, because I’m in the business of “selling advice and information”, I provide sampling through free videos, free reports, free E-books and blogs. Anybody in the “information/advisory” industry would be mad not to demonstrate their skills by doing the same. The idea is to provide one’s target audience with a “taste” of one’s wizardry, increasing the likelihood that a prospect will consider using one’s services or products thereafter.

Marketing When was the last time you saw a fish shop handing out free calamari samples at lunch or dinnertime? I bet the answer is “never”. Whereas if I owned a fish shop, I would have attractively attired hostesses on the pavement in front of my store handling out samples every single day, and I would be promoting that I have “the best calamari in the world, so I want you to have a complimentary taste.” Likewise, if I owned a coffee shop, I would be handing out small “shot glasses” of coffee to passersby. Some years back, it was not unusual to see hair product companies providing complimentary sachets of free shampoo via women’s magazines and shopping centre hostesses. Must confess I have not seen many lately. Cosmetic companies are experts at it. You only have to walk through an up-market department store like David Jones, Macy’s or Myer, and you will see that the cosmetic firms are very cognisant of the “value of sampling”. Women are invited to take a seat and experience a quick “makeover” from just about every cosmetic company, and of course, we all know about the “sample spray bottles” of perfumes and aftershaves that are on the counter for all to enjoy.

Why, on earth, do 95% of businesses ignore this powerful marketing tool? Imagine if a window cleaner walked the main street of a retail shopping strip and, upon entering each store, offered a complimentary “one panel window clean?” I bet he would get a “yes” from every shop owner, and after making one panel of the shop front window look unbelievable, do you think he would be in a better position to close a sale for the rest of the windows? You betcha! You will see on occasions (very rare occasion) in supermarkets representatives of food suppliers providing samples. I realise the supermarket chains may have restrictions on how many “samplers” they allow in store. Nonetheless, you still do not see many of these sampling exercises in the retail sector, and it just amazes me, because “food” is absolutely built for the marketing horsepower of sampling. As I mentioned earlier in this blog, this “food sampling” exercise was common some years back but not so often now.

Other forms of sampling are “events”. In my own case, I do Wow Factor marketing seminars in Australia and internationally, with these events clearly being a vehicle for me to showcase my marketing programs to business owners. My target audience is very clear — business owners. All of the marketing of my events is targeted at “business owners”, and my shorter events are designed to provide a taste test of the “Client Attraction Marketing Formula” that I provide businesses. The idea is to provide attendees of my events with enough “sampling” of my skills and programs to entice them to consider coming to one of my longer events or investing in my coaching program. Guess what? This system works. If I were to try to sell my

skills without showing case studies or giving examples, I may as well be whistling dixie. When I hold a short seminar, I normally get between 100 and 200 businesses in the room. Keep in mind I’m making one presentation to multiple prospects at the same time, so this has to be ridiculously more cost-effective than visiting each of the attendees’ businesses. The great thing is that the seminar registrants are prepared to sit and listen to my stories, theories and solutions for 90 minutes, sometimes half a day and, on occasions, a full day. Imagine how much shoe leather I would wear out if I wanted to give the same presentation to a hundred businesses individually one-on-one. Therefore, my “sampling” is based around volume. Think of something like this that could work for your product or services. You may not hold a seminar, but you may consider holding an “expo” for your product or services. There are many expos happening right around the nation every week, the likes of • Home and lifestyle expo • Gardening expo • Travel expo • Jewellery expo • Pet expo • Food and wine expo • Relaxation expo • SEXPO (no need to explain this one, I’m sure) • Motor vehicle expo • Boat and marine expo

I could go on and on, but I’m sure you get the drift. The point I’m making is that there are major events for just about every subject you can think of, so why not consider holding an expo, cocktail party or luncheon yourself and provide “sampling” of your product or services at the event? You know when you go to one of these expos, you walk away with a gazillion “samples” from exhibitors. Whilst your “expo” may not be in a large convention centre, the same principle applies. You may decide to hold a relatively boutique evening cocktail function for prospects, but the same principle applies. Let them sample your environment and therefore get a “taste” for what they can enjoy if they spend more time with you and your product or services. When mapping out the marketing plan for your business, do not forget to include this very important strategy, because it can deliver “cut-through” like nothing else. Why the Best Salespeople Are Negotiators

A salesperson’s job is to negotiate — engage, listen, probe, customise and tailor a sales pitch. Trent Leyshan lists down the key steps to becoming an effective negotiator. By Trent Leyshan

W

hen we think of a “negotiator”, the mind often paints a picture of a cold, calculated character, like a barrister or hostage negotiator. We rarely consider the creative process involved, a rhythmic dance of sorts that takes place when two parties actively work together towards a win-win outcome. There are many aspects to a sales role. However, there is one area that is critical to all sales or customer engagement processes: negotiation skills. In fact, forget about everything else for a moment — your skill in this area will determine your results. It is your ability to negotiate “effectively” that will augment your long-term success. The Google definition for “negotiate” is as follows:

a. Try to reach an agreement or compromise by discussion with others. b. Find a way (over or through) an obstacle or difficult path.

The above definitions are ultimately what “you”, the salesperson, are paid to do. You can do a strong job of engaging, listening, probing, customising and tailoring your pitch, but if you fail to negotiate the agreement to the sale, the former becomes irrelevant. Anyone can pitch, but how many can truly and effectively negotiate? We can all negotiate. This often comes down to how much we desire something. This will determine what compromises we make and how much time we take in the negotiation process. Of course, if you have trust, the need for negotiations is mooted, as both parties are transparent with their needs. “Transparency might make for a predictable game of poker, but in the game of sales and negotiations, it can cut the sales cycle in half, or better,” says Morry Morgan, author of “Selling Big to China – Negotiating Principles for the World’s Largest Market”. We can make the mistake of underestimating just how critical “people” are to this process. Example: if I do not like

or trust you, for whatever reason, I will negotiate harder for my own benefit. Similarly, speaking recently with Tim, a family lawyer, he explained he works harder for and personally invests in specific clients he likes and believes in. So, given all this, how can you become a more effective negotiator? Here are some key steps: • Know when you are in “the negotiation”. • Have a clear understanding of everyone’s goals. • Prepare well and build a strong case. • Communicate “the facts”. • Do the work. Always be contributing. • Stick to your line of questioning. (Funnel and dig with purpose.) • Ask the right questions. Ask better questions. • Be assertive. Work through objections. • Show a duty of care for the customer. • Demonstrate a belief in what you sell. • Take risks. Make compromises. Be creative. • Harass your fearless leader for ideas and offers to help you negotiate.

A smart question to ask when selling is: “Can I negotiate with this person?” If not, navigate (over or through) them. Do not forget the golden rule: NEVER negotiate with terrorists (time wasters!). When you negotiate with purpose and genuinely believe the outcome benefits both you and the customer, you become vastly more influential. This is an area all salespeople can improve in. See yourself as a negotiator, not just a salesperson, and your customers and fearless leader will see you as someone they can rely upon to get the deal done. Go With Your Strengths ... and Enjoy Your Work More In business as well as in real life, we must identify our strengths and weaknesses to guarantee our growth and survival, working around with our talents and flaws. Peter Knight and Kate Groom of Smart Franchise list the steps to help us make the most of our strong and weak points. By Peter Knight and Kate Groom

O

ur strengths are what we are good at, and the good news is that nature has made us in such a way that we tend to enjoy what we are good at. The reverse is also true. We tend not to enjoy those things we are not so good at. These are our weaknesses. One of the first steps towards freedom in business is to do more of what you are good at and less of what you are not so good at. It is good for your business and also makes sense from a personal perspective. We get to enjoy our days more. Here are four steps to help you make the most of your strengths: 1. Make a note of what you are good at and also what you like to do at work. These are likely to be similar. 2. Identify how you can make the most of these. 3. Now, make a note of those things you are not so good at and you do not enjoy so much. 4. Identify how you can do less of these things. If they are necessary for your business, perhaps consider having them done by someone else. We have found that this exercise really works. If you want to do better in your business, take a few moments now to have a go at this. www.smartfranchise.com.au

Strong Melbourne Show Wraps Up a Busy Year

Coming from the successful Melbourne Franchising & Business Opportunities Expo and a huge three-part expo series this year, the Expos will add Perth as its new destination in May 2016.

T

he Melbourne Franchising & Business Opportunities Expo, held 21–23 August, has been hailed the year’s third successful show, with crowds of business-ready visitors and a record number of exhibitors. “We are thrilled with the show, and it wraps up another huge year for us,” says Exhibition Manager Fiona Stacey. “The targeted marketing campaign resulted in healthy crowds across the 3 days. More importantly, our exhibitors are reporting good-quality leads to follow up after the show, with qualified visitors serious about investing.” Event Director Tim Collett agrees, “It was great to see so many people through the doors each day, and feedback from exhibitors has been extremely positive. We are looking forward to even bigger and better shows next year in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne as well as a new show in Perth in May.” Angie Cooksey from the Franchise Council of Australia (FCA) says, “I 24

think this is one of the best shows we have seen in Melbourne. We have met many potential franchisees seeking information and asking the right questions, and we have also met many potential franchisors doing the research into franchising their business. The Melbourne visitors this year have been very well informed and are serious about investing,” she adds. “The show is attracting the right people and the marketing has been spot on.” Charmaine Cheand from Aussie also agrees, “We have met some really great people interested in becoming part of Aussie. There have been a lot of insightful, well thought-out questions, particularly from people who are ready to invest in their own business now and who have clearly done their homework,” she says. “We have around 45 enquiries so far, but it can also be a long-term thing. Sometimes we get people contacting us again after meeting us a year ago at a show. So it is always worthwhile being here at the show. You never know who

Suzanne Jarzabkowska, CEO of DC Strategy, inspired visitors in her panel session “Learn What It Takes to Build a $50 Million Franchise Business”, detailing how successful businesses, such as Boost Juice, grew from one outlet to a multi-national chain. In addition, Darryn McAuliffe from FRANdata presented two useful sessions on what banks are looking for when they approve finance for franchises, Ahmet Ali from AA Business Brokers presented tips on buying a resale business and Casey Reid from Mobile Services International shared his “Seven Secrets to Freedom”. franchise companies including Endota Spa, First Class Accountants, VIP Home Services, Laser Clinics Australia and 7-Eleven. “The seminar sessions are an important feature of the show,” Stacey explains. “We aim for a broad range of speakers and topics, with general overviews on the benefits of franchising as well as more detailed topics such as legal and financial issues.” On the floor there was plenty of action, including coffees by latte artist Mel Mejia from Gloria Jeans at the Retail Food Group (RFG) stand, a Cinderella-style limo ready to roll at Lux Cars, delicious donuts at Ferguson Plarre, Brendan Burger working the crowd at BK’s Takeaway, free consultations at the Small Business Bus and some of the most fascinating franchises Asia has to offer at the Malaysian Pavilion. “For us, this has been the best show of the year,” says Martin Lo Surdo from Pack & Send. “We have taken solid leads and met very interesting people. We like to invite people who have contacted us online to come and meet us at the show — it is better to meet face-to-face to find out who is serious about a franchise and for them to get a better feel for the business and the people behind it.” Other exhibitors that reported great results included Cleantastic, Cafe2U, EmbroidMe, Lenard’s, Dream Doors, RFG, Aussie Home Loans, Top Cut Lawn Mowing, Jims Shade Sails, Q-Dees, Ferguson Plarre, Aircoat, Lady Bug, The Franchise Shop and AA Business Brokers. Stacey says that exhibitors have been quick to snap up space in the 2016 Expos to be held in Sydney, Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne. “There is no better endorsement for a show than exhibitors immediately re-booking, and many are seeking an enhanced presence next year, be it a bigger stand or more prominent location. Reading

Inspired Reading While we exercise our productivity bones and muscles too much and work so

hard to make our business grow, we tend forget our other life responsibilities. These books help us in finding and maintaining a work-life balance.

Work Less, Profit More: 6 Simple Steps to Increase Productivity, Cut Your Workweek in Half, and Do Only What You Love This book describes how business owners can double their productivity to cut their work hours in half. Contrary to most approaches that promise productivity increases, which require “time management”, discipline, efficiency tools and extra effort, the surprisingly simple 6-step strategy detailed in this book relies on a new way of thinking. Highlights: How to adopt highly productive habits and be productive enough to take afternoons off * How to pamper yourself (without neglecting anyone else) * How to avoid being reactive * How to maintain your highest energy level (and remain in “peak state”) * How to quickly clarify your priorities * How to maximize your focus * How to seize opportunities * How to finally design the lifestyle you deserve. AUTHOR: Ryan Walsh and Katie VanBuskirk PRINT: Kindle only DIGITAL: Download on Kindle (file size: 1241 kb; price: USD 2.99)

Work Life Balance: An Essential Guide to Finding Balance in Life to Increase Your Sense of Personal and Professional Fulfillment This book will help you how to strike a balance in life so that you can still be productive while also enjoying yourself (guilt-free). This guide proposes an entirely different way of looking at the dichotomy of work-life balance. Sometimes, to do or get something else, you have to look differently at what you have. Hopefully, this book will help you change how you work, live and prioritize to create the kind of balance you want and need. Highlights: What is balance, anyway? * The art of juggling * The value of honesty * Keeping track of your spending * The 50-20-30 Rule * Maximizing your time at work * Setting and respecting your own boundaries * Creating space * The value of change. AUTHOR: Anderson Frost PRINT: Kindle only DIGITAL: Download on Kindle (file size: 565 kb; price: USD 4.99)

The Productive Person: A How-to Guide Book Filled With Productivity Hacks & Daily Schedules for Entrepreneurs, Students or Anyone Struggling With Work-Life Balance In this practical, lighthearted and action-oriented book, James Roper and Chandler Bolt explain how you can be productive with your time without sacrificing your social life and the freedom you cherish. By drawing examples from their time as students, entrepreneurs and years of coaching student-entrepreneurs, they show the reader how be more productive while also creating more time freedom. Highlights: Productivity hacks for becoming instantly more productive * Daily schedules that work perfectly for people who need to get stuff done but also want to have some “me” time too * Prework that will alter their mindset and perspective on how they make decisions * Actionable steps to create your new productive habits in a hurry. AUTHOR: James Roper and Chandler Bolt PRINT: Paperback (86 pages; price: USD 9.99) PUBLISHER: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform; 1st ed. (March 27, 2014) ISBN-13: 9781497400146 DIGITAL: Download on Kindle (file size: 4972 kb; price: USD 4.99)

Finding Work-Life Balance: Achieving Fulfilment at Every Stage of Life At different stages of life, we approach work with varying levels of energy, drive and perspective. Many people feel unfulfilled in their work or feel their work-life balance is hopelessly wrong. Jos van der Brug’s readable and informal book will help you understand why and how our working lives evolve at different ages, and this book also provides helpful tips for cooperation and leadership within a team of diverse members. In-depth case studies also offer insight into the impact our professional lives can have upon our personal lives and vice versa. If both employees and employers could better understand the fluidity of our relationship to work throughout life, it would lead to improved work-life balance and personal fulfilment. AUTHOR: Jos van der Brug (translated by Eduard Maas) PRINT: Kindle only DIGITAL: Download on Kindle (file size: 565 kb; price: USD 4.99)

Slack is a messaging app for teams — with all your communication in one place, integrating with the tools and services you use every day. More productivity, more transparency and less email. Like your team’s collective brain. Talk, share and make decisions in open channels across your team, in private groups for sensitive matters, or use direct messages one-to-one. Drag and drop files, documents, PDFs, images and videos to share with anyone and get immediate feedback and discussion through comments. Search across your entire team archives, within documents, files or images, and filter your results by recency, relevancy, person and more. Everything you do on the desktop app is reflected on the fully native iOS and Android apps and vice versa. Everything is in sync; pick up right where you left off. Slack integrates with more than 80 external services to help you pull information from outside tools in a way that is timely, relevant and always searchable. No more switching between apps. All data transfer is encrypted (256-bit AES and TLS 1.2) on the desktop or the phone. Slack is free to use; upgrade to paid plans that offer more features and controls.
