GroutPro: A Natural Fit for the Home Renovation Market Tapping into the booming home renovation surge, this business has been able to double its size 2 years in a row.
O
ne business that has been steadily capturing a good slice of the approximately $30 billion home renovation market in Australia is GroutPro. The business fits into the marketplace with what is essentially a refurbish and/ or repair rather than a replace product and service offer. GroutPro specializes in the cleaning, repair, maintenance and enhancement of all types of tiled and naturals stone surfaces. GroutPro Australia co-owner Geoff Biddle explains, “Home renovation is an enormous potential marketplace, but having the right offer that is a natural fit to the market is most important.” With more than 45 franchise territories already operating and actually doubling their network size 2 years in a row, GroutPro appears well settled on the right offer to the market. “Success at the consumer level often relates to franchise sales, and our growth shows we have been no exception. Our offer to the home renovation market is a natural fit because we save people’s money. Why go to the expense and effort replacing tiles and grout when you can achieve the ‘as new’ look with restoring it? It saves thousands of dollars that can then be used in other areas of a renovation to add more value, and we know that’s a great offer to the market for our franchisees,” says Geoff.

GroutPro Success Geoff also says that other reasons have contributed to the fast growth of the business. “The fact that we are a low investment business, and that you don’t need any experience in the industry, means we are quite an attractive option for people looking for a change. We have franchisees that are ex-bankers, police, trades people, salespeople and more. A real variety of business owners make up our network, and that variety show how appealing and easy to learn our business is. The ideal GroutPro franchisee is a person who is hands on and customer focused and wants to really take ownership of his exclusive territory.”
Key Facts Choose your own hours Low entry cost No special skills needed High profit margins Large protected territories Business has doubled year on year for the last 2 years All equipment and training is provided

Cover Story
Such is the success of the business. Geoff explains that he and his business partner, Wayne Burns, have made the decision to increase the price of the franchise entry cost at the end of January. “Our investment price of under $30,000 has sat very well in the market till now, and we think the time is about right to raise that to just under $40,000. It increases the value of the business for all involved — franchisees included. We are encouraging people to commit to a franchise before January 30, 2015 in order to ‘beat’ that price rise.” Regions for Growth Being almost sold out in Western Australia, the regions being targeted, in particular, are BrisbaneNorthern Suburbs, Melbourne-Western Suburbs, Sydney-Northern Suburbs, Adelaide-Inner City Suburbs and Hobart.
Support & Team Resource Geoff also explains that as the business has matured and added on more franchise owners, a unique support system has evolved. “While we have our five days of initial operations training for new franchisees that covers all aspects of the business, we have also been able to really tap into the knowledge of all in our business by using technology. Support for all aspects of the business is available to all franchisees 24/7 through multiple systems that have been developed over several years. With GroutPro, you are truly in the business for yourself but not by yourself.” If interested in GroutPro, you can find out more information at www.groutpro.com.au. www.FranchiseBuyer.com.au

Hairhouse Warehouse Winning Franchisee Richard Maddison Richard Maddison of Albury, NSW was recently inducted into the Hairhouse Warehouse 2014 Hall of Fame.
M
embership to the Hall of Fame is limited exclusively to the top echelon of franchisees who have all achieved all-round excellence in their stores. We spoke to Richard about his time with Hairhouse Warehouse and tips for success. How long have you been with Hairhouse Warehouse? Over 12 years. I’ve owned several stores — Epping, Broadmeadows and now Albury, which we’ve owned for over 5 years. So why the move into in a regional area? My wife and I were originally from the Albury area, and after living in Melbourne we were keen to escape the city for a better work-life balance. We were thinking of kids at that stage and getting back to be closer to family. Hairhouse Warehouse helped us make it happen. What do you see for your future? At the moment, I’m looking forward to doubledigit growth every year. Will I own more Hairhouse Warehouse stores in the future? Maybe — but I wouldn’t change my life for anything. The lifestyle and family balance we have is priceless. What are the most important factors in running a successful store? Without a doubt, it’s all about having a good team of staff delivering exceptional customer service. That’s vital to the success of our business. We have an amazing team of 13, and the training provided by the support centre ensures that every individual is working to their optimal potential.
What advice would have for someone starting out at Hairhouse Warehouse? My advice is simple — trust in the Hairhouse Warehouse business model, work hard, be determined and good results and profits will come. Hairhouse Warehouse, Australia’s leading hair & beauty brand, has massive plans for the next few years, with 20 new stores to be opened around the country. For a confidential discussion on how you could be a part of it, contact Peter Fiasco on 0451 370 060 or www.hairhousewarehouse.com.au/ franchising.

The Information Age: Local Area Marketing Based on Customer Data Would you like to know where your customers live, what is the average household income around your market or how many people live or work within 2 km of your proposed store? By Peter Buckingham
F
or a businessperson, information is valuable. This article will serve as a guide in your decisions regarding local area marketing (LAM) based on your customers’ information.
Q. Who lives in the area? A. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has gigabytes of information. From their website, go to “Census Data” and “Quikstats” and look up your suburb or postcode to see how the people in your neighbourhood compare to the Australian average. If you want this done for a radius or a group of postcodes, then you may need a demographic company to assist you. Q. Who works in the area? A. The ABS collects information on how many businesses are there in an area and how many persons work there. The information includes the number of workers and what type of job(s) they are in. Q. Where are my customers? A. If your business gathers your customer’s addresses, you can have these plotted, so you may see them on a map. This gives you an understanding of where they currently come from. This can be referenced to the demographic information, so you can see whether you are effective in high/low socioeconomic areas, in young/older areas or in areas of high or low ethnicity. Normally, the issue is collecting the addresses. If you have accounts or your business undertakes deliveries, you have data. If you don’t have data but interested to collect from your customers, you may want to run a customer survey or even a competition that involves customers
filling in their details on the entry form. Most customers will write down their correct address, so they can be notified if they win the competition. You obtain a specific background information related to the socioeconomics of the area. This lets you know who your customers are and where they come from. Q. What are business hit lists? A. LAM or local store marketing are buzzwords of franchise systems. In fact, many systems have in their agreement the percentage of turnover the franchisee will spend on LAM.

Marketing
Most of us don’t know what we don’t know. When it comes to information, this is especially true.
Securing a list of names and their residential addresses is difficult due to privacy laws. However, the same does not apply to businesses. Most franchise systems sell something that a business wants or the employees of that business would be interested in. There are numerous sources of business hit lists — from Yellow Pages or from companies that can cut you a specific list, such as Impact Lists. Q. What can I do with the information? A. Hopefully to make more intelligent decisions! Using good information is like using a rifle to aim at a target instead of using a scattergun approach. This may be the first time most of us start to think about locating a business. Matching your business to your customers is one of the most important decisions you will “ever” have to make. Once you know or think you know who your customers will be, you can look for areas that are high in that group. For example, if you want to sell expensive wedding dresses, you would look locate an area of high income and high percentage of younger women. If you offer lower-priced wedding dresses, you may locate more in an outer suburb. A target market index (TMI) map can assist you in deciding where to start to look. For example, you bought
16
FRANCHISE BUYER
December 2014
a franchise of Toorak for “Cheap Eats” restaurant, and you want to locate amongst the lower income, younger people and students in the area. The TMI map helps you see where these types of people are more pronounced. From an LAM view, if you want to aim at a specific type of business, it is better to direct mail to 50 good prospects than drop flyers into 2000 letterboxes, most of which will be cleaned out straight into the rubbish tin. LAM is about using this type of information to make better decisions. Whether it is a well-thought campaign specifically targeted at the ideal customer that you have identified or a full LAM system that your franchisor has committed to, it should work better than spending your money based on pure guesswork. Summary If you want to make better decisions, you either need to source information yourself or ask your franchisor to help you. Franchise systems either have access to information or work with a demographic company who can supply it. Don’t be waved away with “too hard” because it is your hard-earned money being spent on LAM. If you can target your area and know more about your customers, you will have a far better chance of success with your promotions.

Fossilisation: When Baby Boomer Small Business Owners Stay Too Long Baby boomer small business owners are retiring, while Generation X and millennials dominate. Prof. Frazer discusses ‘fossilisation’ in franchising and the effects of overstaying baby boomer franchisees. By Prof. Lorelle Frazer Is Fossilisation Eroding Your Business Wealth? The term ‘fossilisation’ came up recently in discussions with a franchising professional, who believes a number of baby boomer small business owners have been trying to trade out of the current economic dip to maximise their retirement nest egg yet may have actually ended up eroding business value further. My colleague believes that many baby boomer small business owners are in denial, thinking they can trade out of the current downturn when in fact they have ‘missed the boat’. The consequence of this will be that their retirement nest egg will vaporise and they walk away with close to no goodwill and therefore no money to fund retirement. Fossilisation in Franchising This is predicted to also flow over into franchising with baby boomer franchisees and may already be starting to show. For instance, anecdotal evidence suggests that a rise in franchise agreement non-renewals (in some franchises) is actually the result of the franchisees not renewing rather than the franchisor denying a renewal at the end of the franchise agreement term, which is usually assumed to be the case. This means that those franchisees who do not renew their agreement are simply walking away from the business rather than selling the business even at a low return, which is quite alarming. This is likely to have a significant impact psychologically because often a lifetime of commitment will be gone resulting in a lifestyle downgrade, causing a major hit to a franchisee or small business owner’s self-esteem.
Further, this will not only have devastating effects on individuals and their families but also have the potential to have significant negative impacts on the economy. Potential Impacts on Australia’s Economy • Impact on the pension system, with these proposed self-funded retirees now relying on government assistance • Impact on productivity and employment, as Australian small businesses simply close as they are unsaleable and their children, who have seen their parents’ struggle, do not want the burden or commitment leading to a loss of employment for any staff • Impact on commercial landlords due to vacant tenancies • Impact on small business lending banks Given the potential wide-reaching impact on the economy, governments should consider doing more to help small business. Small business owners also need to invest in ongoing business advice throughout their tenure to identify the best time to sell and how to run their business to generate the most wealth and avoid the downfall of fossilisation.

How to Calculate Your Cost per Lead in Online Marketing?
Knowing how to calculate your Cost per Lead will help you make sharper marketing decisions. By John Mu
I
t is alarming to know that a large number of businesses of all sizes invest vast amounts of resources into online marketing without knowing how to quantify their online marketing spends. Unlike traditional businesses, franchise business models have two different marketing objectives, which depends whether you are the franchisor or the franchise owner on which applies directly to you. 1. Recruitment-based marketing (RBM): To attract quality franchise candidates to buy your franchise opportunity 2. Consumer-based marketing (CBM): To attract customers to the franchised business to buy what you sell However, whichever marketing objective you may have, and before you start pouring money into your marketing efforts, you need to have a good grasp of your Cost per Lead. Understanding your Cost per Lead will enable you to set attainable goals and will enable you to determine the right or at least well-estimated advertising budgets. What Is Cost per Lead? First things first! To understand what Cost per Lead is, you must first understand what the term ‘lead’ on the ‘Cost per Lead’ is referring to. Is a lead someone who enquires about your franchise’s goods and services? Alternatively, is it someone who enquires about buying a franchise
The right definition of the term ‘lead’ in marketing is a prospect who needs something you have to offer from you? Well, the term ‘lead’ has been used since the beginning of marketing; however, over the past several years in online marketing, it has become so misapplied and diluted that it has practically lost all its meaning. You might have heard a traditional database vendor saying that a lead is a name in the mailing list or a consultant saying that a lead is someone with a budget. You probably have searched it on Google and you got the answer that a lead is a click. The right definition of the term ‘lead’ in marketing is a prospect who needs something you have to offer (what your franchise business offers) and has genuine interest in what you have to offer that will fulfill their needs or desires. Leads can be good, and leads can be … ‘not so great’. So, what do I mean by this? A good lead is someone who is interested and can ‘afford’ what you have to offer. A bad lead is someone who is interested in what you are offering but tend to waste

of $500,000 over the last 12 months. You had 100 enquiries/ leads with a modest close rate of 10%. You spent $50,000 on advertising. Divide $50,000 by 100, and you get a cost of $500 per lead (good leads and bad leads). If you wanted to get more technical and work out your cost per sale, you take total advertising spend of $50,000 and divide by 10 sales = $5,000 cost per sale. Not bad considering you spent $50,000 to gain $500,000 in franchise sales. These numbers can be adjusted for the smallest to the largest amounts in your business. Knowing these quantifiable stats will enable you to make sharper marketing decisions in setting advertising budgets and sales targets. It is just a matter of applying the same formula to whatever it is you are ‘selling’.
Cost per Lead = Total Advertising Spend / New Orders your time with no real intention to go through with a transaction. Either way, it costs money to generate leads (good or bad). The Formula Here is the formula to calculate your Cost per Lead: Total Advertising Spend / New Orders = Cost per Lead. You simply divide the total advertising dollars spent (within your marketing period) by the number of leads that came in, and you have your Cost per Lead. Here is an example using franchise opportunities. Your franchise sold 10 franchise licenses for a total

Sales
The Most Underrated Sales Skill By Trent Leyshan
S
ales professionals who disregard a tested followup process will skip the vital steps that limit their sales success. My dad is an enthusiastic recreational fisherman and he taught me everything I know about the art of fishing. As a young buck, one of my first lessons was to always keep the line tight. Don’t give the fish any slack line to throw the hook. In business, the same applies to communication. Never give a genuine customer a valid reason to go cold, particularly after you’ve done all the initial grunt work building trust and establishing the relationship. Keep the lines of communication tight, apply positive tension and ensure you’re following up methodically and leading your customer at every stage of your engagement process. Here are some telling metrics cross-referenced from our BOOM! Analytics division on successful follow-up. While you should keep in mind that there are exceptions to every rule, these stats are insightful: • 1% of sales are made on the first follow-up contact, • 2% of sales are made on the second follow-up contact, • 5% of sales are made on the third follow-up contact, • 12% of sales are made on the fourth follow-up contact and • 80% of sales are made on the fifth follow-up contact. Most salespeople surrender after the second attempt. This also applies to objection handling. Let’s not forget that some people are simply disorganised and churn through prospects too quickly. Or sadly, they simply fail to care about the outcome or the customer relationship. You can see from above how that approach limits their potential. I recommend never making contact for the sake of making contact — that’s called harassment. And if you’ve attended a Red Phone™ sales training sales-training program, you’ll know this is called a
‘white phone’ strategy. White is polite and contains no leverage or compelling motive for action. Following up isn’t calling or emailing periodically asking for a decision, or simply touching base. It means you have thought about your reason for calling and laced the call with critical info to create leverage and motive. Following up professionally also demands you to work a consistent method through each phase of your process. In this process, over time, you will get to know the ‘magic numbers’ that are working and provide a guide for you to measure how many times you should be following up and at what frequency. In short, do more of what works. When your follow-up process starts to exceed your magic numbers, i.e., or your magic follow-up number is 5 and you are now at the 10, you are now in a ‘no’ or ‘negative’ tension zone, which should be a cue to tweak or modify your approach drastically. Ideally, your intention should be clear in your initial conversations with the customer; this sets the tone for positive tension and both safeguards you from feeling uncomfortable when you initiate follow-up and ensures ongoing communication is aligned. There is, of course, a fine line between persistence and harassment, which makes knowing your numbers and crafting strategies to create leverage in your follow-up process key. Following up effectively isn’t hard, yet it does require an understanding of your magic numbers, lines of positive tension, discipline and time — all best served up in a structured approach. Follow-up demonstrates fight. Follow-up shows you care! Following up makes you professional. When you take following up seriously, serious results are sure to follow.
