rom its beginnings in 1899, one would be forgiven for not believing that Snap is the same business as it stands today. Snap started out as a small letterpress printing business called The Imperial Printing Company in 1903. The business ran as a commercial printing operation until 1967 when business owner Stan Watt recognised the instant printing concept in the United States. Seeing what the concept could do to the industry in Australia, Stan acquired the technology needed and brought the concept home and in turn founded Instant Print. The company later changed to Snap Instant Printing and opened 19 centres in three states. Today, Snap operates more than 156 franchises in Australia, 19 in Ireland, 5 in New Zealand and 2 in China. The business now offers print services as well as design and website services. “For more than a decade, Snap has recognised the need for transformation and the need to maintain a relevant business offering,” National Franchise Development Manager Richard Hill says. “It has embraced product innovation to keep up with the digital age. Print services are still offered, but the product mix has expanded and evolved from instant print.” Richard adds, “But Snap realises its origin in print is still relevant today. A recent survey carried out by Australia Post found that Australians still prefer to receive magazines, important or sensitive information, brochures, catalogues and vouchers or coupons as physical mail. MYOB FCA Excellence in Franchising Award Winners Honoured

Carl’s Jr. Expands to Australia

The Franchise Council of Australia (FCA) honoured franchising’s best and brightest at the MYOB FCA Excellence in Franchising Awards Gala Dinner last 13 October 2015 at the RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast. The big winner on the night was Boost Juice Bars, which was named Australian Established Franchisor of the Year. Optometry business Laubman & Pank was named the Australian Emerging Franchise of the Year. Fastway Couriers Australia took home the award for the International Franchisor of the Year. Optometry and retail franchise OPSM also took out two awards: Excellence in Marketing and Franchisor Social Responsibility. A total of 14 Excellence in Franchising Awards were presented, which was proudly sponsored by MYOB. Successful individuals and businesses were recognised across a range of functions, including franchisees, support staff and franchise systems.

The newest contender in the burger biz is set to arrive next year. The American burger giant Carl’s Jr. announced that it is making its way into Australia after successfully opening stores in New Zealand. Crede Marshall, Franchise Business Consultant for Carl Karcher Enterprises, said, “Our Bateau Bay restaurant is in a prime location on the Central Coast Highway at the entrance to the Bateau Bay Shopping Centre. It is in a vibrant, growing area with plenty of foot traffic and activity year-round. This will be an ideal location for our brand and the opening of our first restaurant in Australia. Australia is a key expansion market for Carl’s Jr., and we are excited to open our first restaurant in Bateau Bay in early 2016. We believe that our premium, innovative menu items along with our best-in-class customer service and bold, edgy advertising will be a perfect fit for Australia and its Young, Hungry Guys.” Marshall said that Bateau Bay is only the beginning of Carl’s Jr.’s expansion plans in Australia. “We want to further penetrate NSW and grow into QLD, VIC and WA, with a focus on the major metro areas within those states,” he said. Location, Location, Location! For retail leases, research is mandatory. By Phil Chapman

F

or many, when they enter into a lease or purchase a business with a lease, it is unfortunately human nature that any research of the location and its suitability stops there. Retail leases are complex with very specific conditions and critical events, and it is safe to say that it is not until one of these events is upon us that we scramble to pull together data.

The data invariably is limited to the current shop and is usually skewed to support a singular position on rent. Suburbs, shopping strips, retail precinct and shopping centres and the market they create or operate in are constantly changing. Is my shop still relevant? Is it still suitable for my business? With price disclosure (accelerated and expanded), these two questions need to be asked. Research — in relation to not only the current location but also alternatives as well as research of the shopping centre/retail precinct in conjunction with market pitch (branding), your industry, the Lessor and your competitors — is mandatory.

Research Is Mandatory I use as an example to illustrate a recent outcome of applying sound research an existing pharmacy business we assisted with a pending lease renewal, which evidenced that the business did not actually need to remain within their shopping centre. Being adjacent to a large supermarket for over 10 years, the Landlord’s expectation on rent when compared to the real estate performance identified that these premises were no longer suitable and renewing even at the passing rent was not prudent. Part of the shop research included nearby premises, and with this data available, the pharmacist was able to make the bold decision to relocate. Although seen as an inferior site, the vacant video shop directly across the road with the main road (corner) access, dedicated parking and even a pylon sign proved to be far more suitable for the future of this business (not to mention a highly motivated Landlord).

The Outcome Not only was the occupancy cost halved (not to mention some generous rent free and incentives) but also the business was free from the constraints of the shopping centre in the areas, of trading hours, signage, marketing and car parking. In the case of the pharmacy business itself, prescription numbers increased through greater access and convenience along with trading hours to meet their patients’ needs and not those of Woolworths. Retail sales did reduce slightly at first; however, with the support of their franchise, the ranging and merchandising were realigned to meet this new customer demand and convenience. These sales soon exceeded the old shopping centre site. The cost of the move was more than covered by the significant increase in profits, and when dovetailed with a long-term lease with options, the value of this business reached levels that would never have been achieved beside Woolworths. We were pleased to learn that the Lessor of the “old” shopping centre site is still wondering what happened. Our client was well researched and now trades directly across the road with the comfort that no competing pharmacy can take up a lease.

World-class service is getting harder to find, but, when you do find even a glimpse of it, it’s worth celebrating and sharing. By Trent Leyshan

ere’s what I’m talking about. After a full week speaking and facilitating in the Philippines, I took a weekend trip to the islands to cool the jets and refresh. Utterly relaxed nursing thirddegree burns to half my body and mild sunstroke, I headed back to the airport late on Sunday afternoon. I was immediately ushered to a rickety booth and informed politely that my flight back to Manila had been cancelled. No delay, simply cancelled. As you can imagine, I wasn’t impressed, though the staff tried hard to demonstrate a sincere apology for my inconvenience. Following this exchange, I was herded to a shuttle bus for a 90-min trek to another airport. The loaded bus took off! Racing through tiny villages, airborne at times through streets lined with infants, dogs and chickens, among others. The shuttle bus rocketed past only inches away from absolute carnage. What an experience. Prior to manning the rocket bus, the lady on the customer service desk offered me a trade for my inconvenience. She apologized and carefully handed me a card. This gesture, a small voucher, was well received. Although my time in the Philippines would not allow me to cash in the voucher, I appreciated the offer. My inconvenience was not exactly a fair trade, but it was a trade “none the less”. I have since kept this small voucher tucked in my wallet to remind me of what great service feels like: it’s tangible. Too many companies inconvenience their customers yet do little more than offer to trade that negative experience for an insincere apology (sorry). To be frank, some staff couldn’t care less either, which is sad. This type of service just won’t cut it in today’s market. I encourage businesses to work harder to demonstrate their

regret when they let a customer down. Make it tangible. Make it meaningful. Put some feeling into it. Give them anything but (sorry) hot air! Take the little Philippine airline at Cebu as an example. They get customer service and are prepared to put some skin in the game, and, for that, I’ll invest back in them. Mistakes will happen, so have a method for owning them. This is called common sense. It’s called courtesy. It’s called service culture. This is not only courageous, it’s a proven method to inspire loyalty and repeat business. Almost Every Franchisee Is Leaving Money on the Table Because most fail to collect customer data.

s a marketing advisor, one of my greatest frustrations is seeing businesses failing to collect the name and contact details of their customers. In my world of directresponse marketing, this is the worst “cardinal sin” there is. We all know that apparently it is seven times more expensive to attract a new customer than it is to sell to an existing one. Yet, despite this, more than 90% of all franchisees don’t collect customer data or, for that matter, contact details of “enquirers”. The amount of money being left on the table by franchisees (and ultimately that means “franchisors”) would be a staggering number if someone did the figures. Frankly, I cannot understand why any business owner would not subscribe to the “know your customer” mantra — it just makes sense. All you have to do is look at the Amazon model to see the benefits of knowing as much as possible about your customers. If you have bought a book online from Amazon, I bet, within 24 hours of the purchase, you have received emails suggesting “that if you liked that 22

book, you will probably enjoy any of these three titles”. Amazon understands the enormous value of collecting and categorising customer data, so that they can offer customers “like products” based on customer behaviour.

My “Client Attraction Formula” Starts With Data Collection As a marketing coach to lots of businesses, I provide owners or management with my proven client attraction system that I have named The Wheel Of Wow. My company is The Institute Of Wow, and we specialise in providing businesses with a “direct-response marketing recipe” that is designed to take their clients’ eyes off the price. McDonald’s has been very good at this for decades, putting a “free toy” in their Happy Meal boxes, so that the focus is taken off the price and onto the “free toy”. I teach businesses how to do this, and my The Wheel Of Wow system consists of five components: Identify your most profitable customer, so that you can look for more people who look like them. Also religiously collect customer data, so that you can market directly to them.

Create a “wow factor” to take their eyes off the price.

Exploit the problem/solution scenario (provide a simple solution to their challenges). Fix your website and turn it into a 24/7 sales juggernaut rather than an information centre, which most are. Stimulate repetitive trade usually by implementing some form of loyalty reward system.

Now, note that the No. 1 component of my system involves “collecting client data”, so that you can market to these customers directly.

Hardly Anyone Collects Such Data You can walk into any fast-food chain today, and they won’t care who you are. Some will give you a numbered receipt and ask you to wait a couple of minutes for your food. Why on earth wouldn’t they give you a pencil and invite you to complete a “sweepstakes entry form”? Or why wouldn’t they have a certain “contest keyword” vividly displayed in-store and invite you to SMS that keyword with your contact details to a number to be in a sweepstakes draw? Go to Bunnings, Woolworths, David Jones, Dick Smith or any other retailer today, and I bet you will never be asked for your name, email address or mobile phone number. Have you ever been asked for your contact details at ANY restaurant? In fact, go to just about any “franchised business” today, and I bet you will never be asked for contact details. The two major football codes recently had their Grand Finals, with 80,000 at one and 100,000 people at the other. Guess what — neither code has a clue of who actually attended the game. Can you imagine the amount of caps, T-shirts and other licensed merchandise they could market to these people if they knew their contact details. Sure, the ticketing agencies might have the details but not the sporting codes.

Mobile Numbers Are Very Important If this article inspires you to start collecting such data, please give major priority to collecting your customers’ “mobile telephone number”. With email open rates going south, most would consider a 20% email open rate as being successful. But

wait for this: “Text messages enjoy a 90% open rate within 3 minutes!” We use a new video and graphics text message facility, which is “SMS on steroids.” An intro text message gets sent, and when the recipient clicks the link, he/she gets taken to a “video-driven landing page” that does the theatrical selling. Some retailers using this “supertext” format are reporting a 30% increase in sales within 24 hours. Why? Because the marketing message gets opened by 90% of the audience it was sent to, and the message is “engaging”. You can see ours at www.supertexts.com.au. I show you this, because we see it working every time we use it, and I cannot figure out why so many businesses are ignoring this proven sales generator.

Restaurant Gets $80,000 for Database To give you some idea of the worth of a client database, here is a quick story about a Queensland restaurant that was a client of mine. I had convinced the owner to give out an entry form to every single customer — the prize being a dinner for six, drawn at the end of each month. In just the first month, the restaurant or collected over 4,000 names, emails and phone numbers. The owner was astounded. Within a few months, the database had grown to nearly 10,000. A year later, when my client sold his restaurant, he explained to the buyer that he had a 10,000 strong customer database, broken up into “annual value” segments. In other words, I convinced him to segment his database into levels based on their annual spend. Can you imagine what this would be worth to an incoming buyer? The moment my client mentioned the separate availability of his database, the purchaser of his business said “yes” to an $80,000 price tag for the database attached to the business. Why wouldn’t he? This database would be worth a fortune to any new owner who understood direct marketing, because this would allow him to hit the ground running and start marketing straight away to the 10,000 people. Hopefully this article stimulates you to start considering collecting customer data and then creating an automated email and SMS system to communicate to them. Not to do this is sheer madness in my opinion.
