PRESIDENT’S CORNER

FRANCISCAN CHILDREN’S AND DIGITAL FEDERAL CREDIT UNION: A POSITIVE COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP

Dear Friends, I’d like to take a moment to personally thank you for your dedication to Franciscan Children’s and reflect on our truly momentous progress — that friends like you make possible. With your help in 2017, we made significant strides in our fundraising goals — raising 50% more than the previous year while also securing several transformative capital gifts that will be used to help us expand our campus, programs, and reach in order to treat more kids than ever before. Building on this momentum, we will continue to raise funds and awareness of the critical work we do here at Franciscan Children’s. Our medical rehabilitation and mental health services are in demand more than ever, and we need to expand to meet the rising need for these programs. With the help of partners like you, we will ensure that no child is left waiting when help could be readily available.

As one of only four children’s hospitals in the country that provide medical rehabilitation, mental health care, and educational services onsite, the demand for Franciscan Children’s programs is always growing. As we expand our campus to allow us to care for even more children, we are also taking steps to ensure that all of our current and future patients, students, and families are able to have the best experience possible during their stay at Franciscan Children’s — which can last weeks to sometimes years. Thanks to the partnership and support of Digital Federal Credit Union (DCU), we will be able to take steps to increase the therapeutic and recreational options at Franciscan Children’s so we can continue to fulfill our mission of helping children reach their full potential and live their best life.

This newsletter will provide updates about the incredible generosity of our donors and the inspiration behind their support. From all of us at Franciscan Children’s, thank you so very much for your continued dedication to our patients, students, and their families. Together, we are making great progress towards a brighter future, so every kid can. With gratitude,

John D. Nash, FACHE President and CEO, Franciscan Children’s

WINTER/SPRING 2018

continued from front cover

With the help of philanthropic partners like DCU, Franciscan Children’s provides a range of unique therapies and activities to our patients and students. Whether it is music therapy helping children with language development, or art and dance therapy helping kids learn to express themselves, we are always looking for innovative approaches to reach new milestones with every child we care for. In the coming year we will work with our community supporters, like DCU, to further this effort by creating the Franciscan Children’s Park Project — an adaptive playground and park for children of all abilities. The park will feature specialized areas, including handicap accessible swings and picnic tables, therapeutic gardens with quiet sitting areas for reflection, and a mobility courtyard for children to work on their physical and occupational therapy goals. We are incredibly excited to embark on this project and continue providing our unique expressive therapies, both of which are made possible by the generosity of friends like DCU. We are so appreciative of their support as we work together to build a better future for our patients and students.

BOSTON COLLEGE CONTINUES ITS LONGTIME VOLUNTEER SERVICE Boston College seniors John Wagner and Tommy Borah are no strangers to giving back to the community. Having attended Jesuit high schools, the encouragement to pursue service has long been instilled in these young men. When they arrived at Boston College (BC) four years ago, they took their volunteerism to the next level, leading groups that come to Franciscan Children’s every day. We recently had the chance to sit down with these inspirational volunteers:

me. The patients and families at Franciscan Children’s are absolutely inspirational. The hope, resiliency, and strength of a kid is amazing, and you see that to the nth degree volunteering here. Has giving back always been a part of your life, or is this a new experience? JW: My family has always advocated the importance of giving back, so it was a huge part of my upbringing. I also went to a Jesuit high school, and now BC, where they really encourage getting involved in your local community and being passionate about volunteerism. TB: I agree. I went to a Jesuit high school as well, and volunteering and giving back was a huge part of the curriculum and environment. I also really enjoy the community aspect of volunteering, so it was a natural fit for me. Plus, I love the kids in CBAT so I felt called to help. What would you like people who are not familiar with Franciscan Children’s to know about the work we do? JW: How brave and strong you have to be, both the patients and the staff. The Child Life Specialists, the nurses, the staff, the kids — no matter what the day brings, the vibe all the time is positive, even when a lot of these kids are going through the worst that life has to offer. TB: I agree. I’d also like people to be aware of the amazing staff in CBAT. They are so dedicated and amazing at a job that is often underappreciated. It’s beyond a job for them — they truly care about these kids and want to see them succeed. We want to thank John, Tommy, and the Boston College community for their dedication and partnership. The direct and lasting impact that they have on our patients, family, and staff is nothing short of amazing and we are truly grateful.

What are your favorite units to volunteer for at Franciscan Children’s? Why? TB: When we first started here, we were split into two groups — one group volunteers on the inpatient medical units and one group volunteers with the Community Based Acute Treatment program (CBAT). The inpatient medical units provide long-term care for infants, kids, and teens in need of rehabilitation — whether that’s learning to walk, breathe, or eat. The CBAT program provides mental health care for 4-14 year olds in need of intense care and stabilization. I chose CBAT since I was interested in mental health and it completely changed the course of my life. I went into it thinking that I’d be able to help a few kids, but every time I walk off of the floor at the end of my shift, I realize these kids have taught me so much more about resiliency and strength than I could ever hope to teach them. JW: I have been fascinated by medicine since I was younger, and knew I always wanted to work with children, so the inpatient medical floors were a perfect choice for

NOVACK FAMILY PHILANTHROPY SPANS GENERATIONS The Novack family, longtime Franciscan Children’s advocates and supporters, began their philanthropic activity here in 2001, when the family was introduced to our organization and inspired to make a difference. Support for the hospital has come through the Novack Family Foundation, established by Ken Novack and chaired for many years by his late father Hyman Novack. The current trustees include Ken, his wife and four children, his son-in-law, as well as Hyman’s widow and his great-granddaughter.

CORKIN FAMILY SUPPORTS IMMEDIATE EXPANSION EFFORTS Franciscan Children’s is home to a wide range of dedicated doctors, nurses, and clinicians who work tirelessly to provide quality and accessible pediatric healthcare to families in New England and beyond. We are committed to expanding our number of beds in the coming years so that no child is left waiting in their most vulnerable moments. Now, with a generous $60,000 contribution from the Robert Lloyd Corkin Charitable Foundation, our mission to increase the number of children we can serve on our campus is more attainable than ever. The family foundation was established by the late Herbert I. Corkin and continues to thrive with the help of his family — among them are his daughter Janice Corkin Rudolf, her daughters, Lee Manning and Katherine (KC) Sylvestre, and his nephew Steven Corkin. “Our family appreciates and values the serious needs of the population Franciscan Children’s serves, and we want to show our support,” Lee, a trustee of the family foundation, said during a recent tour of our campus. Along with Lee’s involvement, her sister KC has also joined the Franciscan Children’s Board of Overseers, inspired both by her visits to our campus and her career working with local high school students affected by mental health issues. Steve, who serves as a trustee for Boston Children’s Hospital and has a deep understanding of pediatric healthcare, also wanted to become more involved given the role Franciscan Children’s plays as a bridge between area hospitals and patients being able to return home. The Robert Lloyd Corkin Charitable Foundation has served as an influential philanthropic supporter of pediatric health institutions and non-profits in the New England area. As a result of the Corkin family’s generosity, we are now in a position to provide our expert level of care to even more kids in the community.

“Anyone who visits comes away with an understanding that Franciscan Children’s is a wonderful place that needs and deserves our support,” says Ken of his family’s ongoing contributions. The Novack family supports many programs here at Franciscan Children’s — including the McLeanFranciscan Child and Adolescent Inpatient Mental Health Unit, the Kennedy Day School, and the music therapy program. The Novack Conference Room, Novack Music Therapy Center, and Novack Nursing Area in Kennedy Day School are named in honor of Hyman’s incredible generosity and dedication. In addition to the family’s programmatic support, Ken’s daughter Laura has co-chaired events and served on the Franciscan Children’s Board of Directors, her sister Liz has been a longtime friend contributing her event planning expertise, and Laura’s daughter Madeline has hosted a fashion show to benefit the hospital. Over the years, the Novack family has introduced several new friends to Franciscan Children’s. “I wish everyone could visit Franciscan Children’s and see the magic that takes place with the children, their families, and the staff,” explained Liz on the importance of her family’s support. The Novack family recently pledged $100,000 towards Franciscan Children’s expansion and mental health campaigns, in addition to their annual $20,000 contribution. We are incredibly appreciative of our longstanding partnership with the Novack family, and are so grateful for their continued generosity.

We are so grateful for the Corkin family’s partnership in support of our patients, students, and their families.
