As a young professional, Francisca moved to Hong Kong to take on new challenges and expand her architectural horizons. In early 2011 she began working for Aedas as an intern, working with a team to develop competition entries across Asia, under the guidance of Andrew Bromberg. Within six months, her talent was recognized and she was employed as an architect on the design detailing team for the MTR West Kowloon Terminus Station (WKTS) project. After the successful completion of the WKTS project, Francisca

took up a position with TDA Interiors. Commencing as an Interior Architect, she collaborated on projects for major corporations such as Bayer and Morningstar. Again, her talent was quickly recognised and she was appointed Project Design Leader of a fitout for Diageo’s Hong Kong office. In this role, she had full responsibility for design, liaison with the client and coordination with project managers. Returning to structural architecture, Francisca was employed by MAP architecture and planning, working on the Rail Vision 2020

program of the MTR metro. The project developed a ‘future station’ concept, incorporating ongoing station and network improvements and advanced technologies to keep passengers connected and informed throughout travel. Francisca worked in-house to develop designs and details for the revitalization of existing stations, including the prototype stations of Mong Kok and Kowloon Tong. From mid 2013, Francisca was the architect responsible for the new Middle Island Development of the Aberdeen Boat Club. Moving from rail infrastructure to yacht facilities, the main challenge was to design a club house and storage facilities on a desert island in Hong Kong. As both sailors and architects, MAP directors Karl Grebstad and Ed Billson provided expert guidance for this project. Francisca fully developed and designed the project, including the final government submission.

Francisca was born in June 1986 in Porto, the cultural capital of Portugal. As the daughter and granddaughter of jewellers, her creativity was encouraged by her mother who was passionate about art and design. In high school, Francisca took life drawing classes and courses at the National Museum Soares dos Reis and Serralves Foundation. As an architecture student at the Minho University, Guimarães (northern Portugal), Francisca’s work was always marked by her creativity, communications skills and dynamism. During five years of study, she participated in Erasmus, the European exchange program, and spent one year living and studying at Norway’s NTNU in Trondheim. As part of the program, she also took up the opportunity to study Tibetan architecture and culture, living in Tibet for two months. In the second part of her exchange year, she collaborated with students from Chalmers University, Gotenborg, Sweden, focussing on energy, environment and sustainability issues in architecture. Francisca was awarded her Integrated Master’s degree in 2009, with a thesis entitled “Urban Void - Parques d’Água”. The thesis was completed under the guidance of Professor Pedro Bandeira, at the Minho University’s School of Architecture, and Francisca’s excellence was reflected by receiving one of the highest marks given that year. Her professional experience began when still a student, at the Labastida & Maia atelier in Porto. Under the direction of Carlos Maia and Marta Labastida, professors at Minho University, Francisca collaborated as an intern whilst still studying, contributing significantly to a number of projects and commissions in the office. A particular highlight of her internship was contributing to the winning competition entry for the master plan at Cerdanyola del Vallès, Barcelona. A year after the entry was chosen, and whilst still a student, Francisca then collaborated on the full development of the city’s master plan, producing detailed drawings as part of the team as an intern. She also had the opportunity to contribute to several landscape projects delivered by the atelier.

Hong Kong, 25th March 2014 Francisca started working with us in the middle of an MTR project as an in-house architect. She got up to speed with the project very quickly, and was soon given leadership of the project within MAP. In particular, she was able to design grand ideas for the station revitalization, as well as paying extremely close attention to detail and exploring new ideas as they came up. While working in-house for MTR, she designed features for future stations, with the overarching goals of improving traffic flow and creating the perception of enlarged station spaces, through features such as internal facades (including a material and textures study), ceiling features, light features and architectural signage. (…) Her ideas were outstanding and innovative, developing the new image that MTR needed. On completion of the MTR project, Francisca was the architect responsible for the new Aberdeen Boat Club at Middle Island in Hong Kong.(...) In particular, she completed all the design stages for the project, producing drawings from brainstorms held with the directors; coordinated with engineers, and other consultants, as well as leading liaison with the client. (...) Francisca is always eager to learn from others and to develop new skills. She has shown herself to be a strong team member, sharing the load with others, contributing to team goals and communicating with other team members. She maintains productive working relationships with colleagues, clients and consultants, and remains calm, courteous and respectful even in stressful situations and under pressure. I would very much recommend Francisca as a creative, dedicated and sharp architect for any future employer.

Hong Kong, 23rd December 2012 At the time Isca joined TDA, I was serving in the role of Operations Director/Design Critic-in-Residence for the company, and in this role interviewed her, was impressed by both her personality and her broad &varied range of experience.(...) I was very pleased to see her role expand and grow during that time. I was immediately impressed by Isca’s dedication, seriousness, and clear eagerness to learn & contribute more to the works of the office, (...). She gained valuable experience in space planning (often preparing multiple test-fit plans), developing initial concept designs, and preparing more detailed design presentations in addition to actually working on construction drawings and details. I found Isca to be detail-oriented, careful and thorough in her work, and well organized. She was also an excellent team player and booster for the team spirit of her colleagues and for the work of the firm. She learned to use her contacts to try to source new business for the company, and was always willing to undertake extra-office activities, which also contributed to the working environment and the interaction of our professional team. During the course of our working together, I was pleased to see her developing good skills in space planning, detailing, and even in the sourcing & budgeting of materials and finishes for the company’s projects. (…) Most notably, Isca was the primary interior designer and client liaison for one of the most recent office projects, a new office space for the international beverage distributor, Diageo. I would easily recommend Isca as a serious, thoughtful, creative & dedicated intermediate-level Interior Designer (…). Her range of experience, combined with her clear eagerness to learn across a spectrum of the design industry would make her a valuable team member for any organization.

Hong Kong, 30th January 2012 (…) Francisca worked on the West Kowloon Terminus (WKT), a project for the hight speed railway connection between Hong Kong and the mainland, for the majority of her time with us. Francisca is a capable employee who worked extremely hard and who became involved in a full spectrum of activities withIn the Aedas office, attending an internal resident Design Workshop, general continuing education activities and other office functions. We found Francisca perfectly capable of functioning in an environment alien to her native tongue and it was with regret we ad to lose her on completion of her defined duties. She has a very amenable personality completing her tasks on time with good nature and is not afraid to ask questions if she is in any doubt. We would not hesitate to recommend Francisca to any future employer.
