The strategy to concentrate the entire program in a single black volume, currently dispersed in precarious buildings along the Courtyard, released a green surface that responds to public and community vocation of this club. This volume floats over a viral geometry that not only shines through the outside what happens in the new building, but above all, effectively connects the old and the new, the different levels, and elaborates an identity for this equipment, soberly controlled by the black volume. Constructively we’ve achieved a solution that had quality, but also a durable and economical one, that allows this club with meager budget, continue with dignity, the training of young athletes, expanding its century of history.

As final thesis for the master’s degree in architecture (ESAP 2009), it was chosen as research theme “Work and Communication Instruments of Contemporary Architecture”. This will also be the frame for the architecture project of a research facility. As its motto, the phrase from Rem Koolhaas “Today’s project architect shouldn’t do buildings that restring the liberty of action, movement which characterise the contemporary culture”.

elements that punctuate the marginal lighthouse | intervention area | Office Edgar Cardoso | old customs House
Construction area: 2.278,30m2
The proposal is set to build a swimming pool complex in the old shipyard “Ouro”. A territory characterised by its geography, but especially for the urban location between two of the city development axes, and ignored by the redevelopment of Porto 2001. Having as the main aim, not only the building itself, but the creation of a public space that meets the urban contemporary needs, a rehabilitation tool in an area socially problematic. The intervention is assumed, luring users through the fluidity, created by the fragmentation of the program into several volumes, connected by an underground level. Volumes that seeks specific alignments in the landscape, qualified views, while maintaining the connection between the city and the river. At night, the volumes transform themselves into light boxes to maximize the enjoyment of the facilities, but also as preventing strategy to end the occurrence of marginal activities. The terrain is shaped not only to create five independent volumes, but especially for a topographic creation that incorporates new uses and appropriations of the place. The programmatic connection, a concrete tube emerges beneath the building, projecting itself up in the air. As completion of the program, is proposed an itinerant exhibition, a boat travelling globally, interposing in others urban circumstances, enhancing the transmission of knowledge generated in this center.

The Engagements of Food is a project originally developed for the competition Performance Architecture, part of the program for Guimar達es 2012 European Capital of Culture. Later it was adapted to fit the urban context of Barcelona for the contest eme2012 bottom up. It is an architectural concept and material strategy that seeks to reinvent a collective food culture, in marginalized communities, as a strategy for urban re-territorialization.

Recommendation Letter
To whom it may concern:
As Francisco Monforte’s professor at Escola Superior Artística do Porto ESAP, I have had an opportunity to observe the student's participation and interaction in class and to evaluate his knowledge of the subject matter. I would rate the student's overall performance in these subjects as high: • Programming and site analysis; • Study of architectural designs and development of proposals; • Design thinking • Detail drawing • Development of models The engagement and passion for architecture that he demonstrated while my student, were essential for the success of the Academic Year of 2009/2010. In the period that I have interacted with Francisco, he not only came across as a very organized and motivated individual but also a self-confident and success-oriented person, and therefore I sincerely believe he would be an outstanding asset to your studio. If you have any questions regarding this recommendation, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Fátima Fernandes, architect Porto, 15th Decembre of 2010

Joaquim Portela 00351918822915
