Klaus Schmidt-Hebbel, former OECD's Chief Economist Ask me about: International economy, trade, economics of technological change, fiscal policy, pension systems. Klaus Schmidt-Hebbel focuses on topics of international finance, growth policies, development and pensions. He worked 12 years in Chile's Central Bank, 8 years in the World Bank and several as a consultant for governments around the globe. In 2008, while he was the Director of OECD's economic department, he was appointed as Chief Economist of the organization in the midst of the financial crisis explosion. Before completing a year in the position, the tragic event of his son Diego being killed would force him to resign and return to Chile. He is currently the Chairman of Chile's Advisory Fiscal Council and a board member of several corporations and NGO's. He holds a PhD in economics from MIT. Mr Schmidt-Hebbel will be briefly introducing the following two topics and then opening it up to Q&A: A historical overview of the economic transformation that enabled Chile's good results in growth and overcoming poverty. In particular, the key reforms made under the management of the "Chicago Boys". And the role that the Concertacion Center-Left Coalition had in continuing the development of the economic model when transitioning to democracy. A look at how the present and future looks like to an economy like Chile's, in the context of severe technological change, commercial and geopolitical instability, populism threats and a much more complex middle-class society.

President Ricardo Lagos at Centro de Estudios Públicos Ask me about: Chile's transition to Democracy; current threats to Democracy and world order, the Presidency, Latin America, Climate Change. President Lagos is one of the most important leaders of Chile's recent history, playing a key role in the country's transition to democracy. In the 1980's, he emerged as a leader of the opposition to General Pinochet's dictatorship, particularly remembered by an iconic camera moment in Chile's political history, known as "El dedo de Lagos" (The finger of Lagos, 1988). He challenged Pinochet on live TV, by accusingly using his index finger pointing him on camera, challenging him for his inconsequence and infinite ambition of power. Ricardo Lagos would then be appointed as Minister of Education (1990-1994), Minister of Public Works (1994-1998) and elected President of Chile (2000-2006). Among other positions, after the presidency he was named UN Special Envoy for Climate Change. He graduated from Law School at University of Chile and holds a PhD in economics from Duke University. Stretching 1,240 km through Chile, from Puerto Montt to Villa O’Higgins in Patagonia, the route takes you through untamed landscapes that constantly change and evolve. One moment the road will be fringed with lush, dense forests and the next you will be driving through stark, rugged wilderness with snow-capped mountains forming the backdrop. The entirety of the area is sparsely populated, allowing visitors to truly detach from modern civilization and lose themselves in the lap of nature." An iconic adventure, where all started for environmentalists Douglas Tompkins and Patagonia Inc. founder, Yvon Chouinard. Lito documented this expedition in the film "Mountain of Storms" (1968). In 2010, 180ยบ South was released. A film by Jeff Johnson, that emulates the 1968 trip, but instead of the Fitz Roy attempts to summit Chile's Corcovado Volcano. Both worth watching! Meeting with Jonathan Leidich, Weston Boyles & Patricio Segura Jonathan Leidich, or Jonas, as called by the locals, is one of Patagonia's best-known guides and the founder of Patagonia Adventure Expeditions. He first came to Patagonia at the age of 19, seeking the limits of human habitation on the planet. For the past 25 years, he has made Patagonia his home, based in the Colonia River Valley, where his neighbor its the massive Northern Patagonian Ice Field. You can ask Jonas about the cycle of water in the region and the evolution of glaciers, as well as the recent history of Aysen, its nature and its people. Also, he pioneered the rafting network on the Baker River and is an accomplished mountaineer, with ascents throughout Chile and across Latin America. He has co-authored articles in numerous scientific journals and been featured in many books, articles, and films about the AysĂŠn region. Weston Boyles is a freelance filmmaker from the mountains of Western Colorado. For the last eight years Weston has been living and working in Patagonia for six months of the year while working on a variety of environmental projects for Tompkins Conservation and Patagonia Sin Represas. Weston founded Rios to Rivers in 2012, to inspire the protection of rivers through youth-focused experiential and educational cross-culture exchange programs, where underserved students are empowered to become informed stewards and ambassadors for their rivers and the communities who depend on them. He strongly believes that listening to the local community leaders, creating space for them to take the lead is critical for successful exchanges. Weston is fluent in Spanish and an expert whitewater kayaker. Check out a recent TV report of his work called "Los futuros guardianes de los Rios" (The future guardians of the rivers)

Patagonian BBQ Josefina Ruiz and Pablo Sepulveda, both very enthusiastic people, are planning to set up a "Patagonian Barbecue". The goal is to meet and share with part of the local community, try their organic products, have a grasp of patagonian culture and a sense of what it means to be born and raised in Aysen. We might also hear from their initiatives in arts & crafts, farming, cattle and tourism. Josefina Ruiz is an environmental lawyer and local community leader. After graduating from Law School in Santiago, she decided to move to Patagonia to join Conservación Patagónica, part of the Patagonia Land Conservation Trust, dedicated to create national parks in Chile and Argentina. She got actively involved in the legal and community engagement teams for the “Patagonia Without Dams” campaign. She is also the founder of Friendly Wool, a fair-trade startup working on Wildlife Friendly certified yarns. Pablo Sepulveda is an entrepreneur, founder of Pared Sur, an ecotourism company specialized in mountain biking and mountaineering, developing routes of both disciplines both in Chile and internationally. Pared Sur works to develop outdoor programs with a spirit grounded on love and respect for nature, and a passion to explore the natural wonders of our country and the world. Pablo is also a University Professor, teaching Eco-Tourism professionals on subjects related to mountain sports, environmental education and active Eco-Tourism.
