When i was 17, and halfway through my A-levels, my mum decided that I needed to brush up on my Shakespeare and hired a tutor for the summer to take me through the English literature curriculum. My first lesson was spent in our back garden putting golf balls. I was a little puzzled, as was my mum, but we assumed that it somehow had something to do with Antony And Cleopatra and we just hadn’t yet discovered exactly what. Lesson two was even stranger. Max, the tutor, said we were going to walk into the nearby woods where there was a surprise task waiting for me. Ah, I thought, this must be related to Thomas Hardy’s Far From The Madding Crowd. The surprise turned out to be a dead rabbit; and the task was that I had to skin it. That was my last tutorial with Max; soon after he was taken into the psychiatric unit of the local hospital. The good news is that I passed the exam, and I also know how to skin a small mammal: a task that hasn’t proved very useful in a career spent in lifestyle journalism, but it’s a comfort to know that should I be stranded in the wild for some considerable time I will be able to survive on more than just a few dodgy berries (if you’ve seen Sean Penn’s movie Into The Wild you will appreciate the importance of this).

Tembea are a brand

we’ve been following through the blog for a number of years now and consider them to be massively underrated here in Europe, so as a means to tackle this we took our latest selection from the shop out and about to give them the showcase they deserve. One of the stand out features of their bags is they all have such great durability with the heavy duty canvas they are constructed out of, and the paraffin based wax that covers each outer surface. We decided to take some products from Tembea out and about in their natural environment to give you a better idea of what they look like and their function. Imogene + Willie just revelaed their most recent collaboration with White’s Boots. Together they created five different make-ups of the 5” Semi-Dress Boot, in Distressed Cowhide, All Black, Black with Cap Toe and Brown. The simple, traditional and timeless styling of these boots are quite versatile, if you snag a pair now you’ll still be wearing them in 20 years. I think these are my favorite version, I love beautifully distressed leather. I also appreciate the four eyelets with two speed hooks at the top. Nice job I + W. Details: • 5” Height • Single Sole Leather Outer Sole with Swing Last • Double Row Stitch • Block Heel • Made in Spokane Washington

Just like any other Japanese brand, Anachronorm, an Okayama based brand, has always find its way to master the manufacturing technique and always pays a great attention to details and materials.

Taking a look to their latest collection drops at End Clothing UK, They are bringing these superb items like the button up jersey parka, the overdyed work jacket, a beautiful embroidered tiger (or jungle scene) chambray shirt with 3/4 sleeve, and a work pants that comes in olive color with a little bit touch of indigo dyed cotton chambray in the side pocket And to note that most Anachronorm products are made in Japan and comes in an extremely limited numbers, you how great it is to cop one of these stuff from Anachronorm.

The orange colorway carries a tropical floral print with orange stitched New Balance branding, while its blue-hued counterpart is adorned with multicolored horizontal stripes and red stitched brand logo.

Both colorways of the limited edition New Balance 205 are available exclusively at Urban Outfitters stores and online.

With more than enough dope short-sleeved shirts to go around this summer, you’ll be hard pressed to fine any as dope as the Indigo Short Sleeve Button Downs from 8.15 August Fifteenth.

The indigo-dyed shirts ($198) feature two batik prints; flower and ring, in a lightweight cotton that is absolutely perfect for a day in the sun. Fashion plus function equals win.

Each piece comes in several colors and will be available starting Friday, June 15 between UNDFTD stores and online. Few things, usually fashioned, but worthy of note the logo “D & U” classic logo taken from G & S Gordon & Smith (the historian Californian brand of surfboards and skate).

Our good friend William Kroll, owner and founder of Tender Co, and his wife Deborah have just released a new online storefront that goes by the name of The Trestle Shop. As you may know we’re stockists ourselves of Tender’s main line collection, but this store has a slight twist and works in parallel to the core Tender collection. They’re looking to produce and sell experimental and unconventional items which come about when developing the main line, most of the pieces are limited in stock and sometimes they only hold one of an item, which weirdly makes them more attractive and appealing. It’s great to know you own something that’s original and that no one else will have. The name of the shop itself follows in line with the Tender Co collection which is based on the British Steam Age. The Trestle Shop derived from railway trestle bridges of the 19th century, and operates from the top of a trestle table which is like a market stall or a spare parts bench in a locomotive repairs workshop.

I personally think this is going to be a great little shop and will be one that you should definitely keep checking back for more products, I’ve got my eye on a few special items already for my office. I saw this ‘Hands-On’ mechanical wrist watch in-particular when I went across to check out the collection earlier in the year, it’s an absolute gem of a piece, it’s cased in England and has a hand-wound Swiss movement.

What’s intriguing is that the dial is rotated at a 45 degree angle to make the watch readable whilst driving, this inspiration was taken from early Twentieth Century drivers’ watches, also another impressive feature in my eyes is that the movement is visible through an exhibition case at the back. For someone like me where I love to see the inner workings of things this is a real bonus, looks beautiful both on the inside and the outside.

I’ve been keen on showcasing some imagery from the A.P.C. quilt collection for quite a while now, this line isn’t really new but it’s limited in it’s production so they’re obviously hard to come across, or find any pictures of for that matter. Luckily the good folk at Tres Bien have snapped some shots which very much represent their nature in my opinion, rustic, bold and full of texture.

I’m not sure if I mentioned before but earlier in the year I purchased a book titled Traditional Stripes and Lattices by Kamon Yoshimoto that looks at textile design, particularly that of the Japanese (obviously a plus).

It’s interesting just flicking through and admiring all the different patterns and shapes, I’ve never really been that into textile design but this book completely changed my opinion on the whole field and I was blown away by the amount of dyeing and other processes that you can go through to get the finished piece.

I love this variety and the idea of a never ending search for the perfect material, weave, colour or even textile pattern, a mind boggling number of combinations I’m sure.

Obviously this collaboration by founder of A.P.C. Jean Touitou and designer Jessica Ogden is a bit different but at the same time it links in nicely. All of the quilts are actually made from old A.P.C. fabrics and are produced by hand using traditional patchwork sewing, as you can see each combination is totally different and would be one of a kind. I’ve got two favourites in-particular, one being the above quilt which comes in a multicolour, this reminds me of the Eames couple for some reason, I think it’s their use of block colour and title patterns. The second one is the fifth image down that’s an indigo dyed quilt, it’s pretty superb and is less formated than the multicoloured piece, but it would fit in nicely in any home and definitely has a handmade feel about it.

Still the finest large-screen tablet on the market, the third-generation Apple iPad ($499-$829) delivers an unmatched array of excellent apps on a truly gorgeous screen. The high-res display and fast 4G LTE are the best of what’s changed from the wildly popular iPad 2 ($399, 4.5 stars), and the little improvements like a better rear camera and a new dictation feature only help sweeten the deal. The biggest reason to recommend the new iPad, though, isn’t its hardware, fine as that is. It’s the software. And I don’t mean Apple’s software, either, although iOS 5.1 is certainly no slouch. The collection of third-party apps for the iPad is far better than on any other platform, including Android, delivering a superior experience—and making it our Editors’ Choice for large-screen tablets.

One screen. Five million pixels. When you pack over 5 million pixels into a 15.4-inch display, the results are positively stunning. The pixel density is so high, your eyes can’t discern individual pixels. Images take on a new level of realism and text is pin sharp. And with a 2880-by-1800 resolution, you can see more of your high-resolution images onscreen with pixel-for-pixel accuracy. So your best ideas can become your best work. More color and contrast. Less glare. The new Retina display reduces glare while maintaining incredible color and quality. In fact, it has a 29 percent higher contrast ratio than a standard MacBook Pro display. Blacks are blacker. Whites are whiter. And everything in between is rich and vibrant. IPS technology gives you a wide, 178-degree view of everything on the screen, so you’ll see the difference at practically any angle. And you’re going to love what you see.

I was skeptical about the rumored next generation iPhone’s design. The two-tone unibody enclosure shown in crappy videos didn’t say anything to me. Then I saw these renderings, using the allegedly leaked parts as reference.

But while its general design spirit seems 80s, the perforated grills flanking the new nano-dock port are so simple and neat—their clean precision screams high tech.

Now I’m starting to love it. While the current iPhone 4 and 4S gets me back to the 70s—specially with my JackBack on—the new iPhone 2012 reminds me of the 80s. The two-tone black anodized aluminum reminds me of the old AV Sony designs of that decade—like their first CD player.

The front is just glass, like it always have been. Putting the camera centered with all the elements of the front— speaker grill, screen and home button—is a small change that makes all the difference

30 From June 3rd through the 17th Galeri Nasional became home to an exhibition that is long overdue, displaying the works of Indonesian master painter Raden Saleh. A familiar name to most, the Indonesian born Raden Saleh studied art in Europe after showing much promise as a painter under Belgian artist A.J. Payen’s tutelage. Refining his craft during his visit to the Netherlands, France, and Germany, he returned to Indonesia with his newfound skills. Fascinating is the word when describing Raden Saleh’s work. His European influence is overwhelmingly apparent, yest many of his subject matter and attention to details feels very close to home – his growing up in two different environments evident in his works. Masterpieces such as “The Capture of Prince Diponegoro”, “The Hunt” and “Javanese Landscape, With Tigers Listening To The Sound of a Travelling Group” are on full display for visitors to enjoy. The first in particularly reminds me of 19th century paintings such as JacquesLouis David’s “The Coronation of Napoleon” in composition (very much different in subject and mood… though perhaps those can be argued), where Diponegoro and his captors are put on a pedestal where most light shines upon them, signifying their stature, while the surrounding cast focus either their sights or posture towards the Javanese leader in anger, despair, or in arrogance for some.

That would have made a mockery of its name if not for the tight corridors between stages in the more compressed confines. What organisers couldn’t have prepared for was hundred of fans jeering the festival’s main act before they had taken the stage. A 50-minute wait for a band after more than 10 hours of the festival had passed will do that to a crowd. Not even Kanye makes you wait that long.Thankfully that headliner, M83, had an ace in the hole to put into play and make up for what organisers labelled “technical difficulties’’.

But before we reached Midnight City there was a hell of a day to get through. The Pain of Being Pure at Heart have the sort of wanky indie band name that makes you want to dismiss them instantly. But their upbeat indie pop rock went down a treat in the early hours of the afternoon, the main stage crowd soaking up the jangly burst of guitars. A lead guitar line reminiscent of the Smashing Pumpkins’ Rocket and the Teenage Fanclub harmonies of Heaven’s Gonna Happen Now a fitting entree to what hoped to be the main course - those English kings and queen of the late ‘80s-early ‘90s indie retreads, Yuck.

But the sound at the Young Turks stage, moved from Alexandra Street because of the weather, was abysmal and muddy. From the side of the mixing desk it sounds like they are playing in another room. Anything the band said on stage was indecipherable and their luscious brand of indie rock - abrasive without being aggressive - fell flat. A huge disappointment. Hopefully we get to see them in the more fitting confines of the Zoo one day.
