PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION IDEAS

AT HOME Considering having your session at home is a great option for children of all ages. At home the children are on their natural environment. Changes of clothes in case of accidents can be quickly dealt with, and this option also allows me to understand their personality and try to show it through my work.

ON LOCATION Beach and parks are also a great option for photography sessions. It will always depend on the weather. The best tme for these sessions are early morning (before 9am or late afternoon, after 4pm.

LET’S DO SOMETHING TOGETHER Do you have an activity that you enjoy doing together as a family? A family tradition? I believe in capturing the simple moments, as our lives are the sum of these instants. A simple activity like baking cookies using grandma’s old receipe book can be a great way to record what your family looked like at that instant in your life.

WHAT IS LIFEST YLE PHOTOGRAPHY ? Lifestyle photography is a kind of photography which mainly aims to capture portrait/people in situations, real-life events or milestones in an artistic manner and the art of the everyday. The primary goal is to tell stories about people’s life or to inspire people in different times.

Have you ever wondered how can photography influence your life? Photography is the only thing left to us after a moment becomes a memory. Through my work I want you to remember how the warm sun felt on your skin, or what the gigles of your young children sounded like when you tickled them. When photographing children I hope to capture their personality and real emotions beyond the cheesy smile. The strategy I use for this is to follow their lead. I have a set of games and questions that I hope they will enjoy and follow. We al know that things don’t always work they way we plan, so if they don’t want to play along that;s ok, we move on to something different that they will enjoy or have a break with a snack or quiet time.

OUTDOOR FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY SESSIONS Outdoor family photography sessions are a great option for warmer weather. What should you consider when selecting a location? What should you wear?

Outdoor family sessions are also a great option to consider before you book your session. No matter what age group or what stage in life your family is at, outdoor locations can be a great way to tell your story. When contemplating a possible location, think about what parks you always go to, and that are meaningful for your family. If you can’t get your head around a location, I can also assist on the selection and propose a few places I love. My most succesful family sessions have been when we have incorporated an activity that the the family loves to do together. This gives you something to do with your hands and feet, engages the little ones, and brings an authentic smile to your face. Do you love to read together? Bring some books. Love to play board games or cards? Plan to play a round of Uno or Monopoly during your family photo session. Other ideas include: football, piggy back rides, races, bike riding, hiking, singing, picnics, the ideas are endless. When families are engaged in doing something that they love together, it will give me the opportunity to take some beautiful and authentic photographs.

The best time of the day for an outdoor photography session is early in the morning (from 7am to around 10am) or late in the afternoon after 4pm. With young children I suggest that you bring a change of clothes just in case they get wet when visiting places like the beach. Another great tip for a succesfull photoraphy session is for the children to be rested and well fed. Please make sure that you don’t schedule your photography session around nap times or bedtime. It would be great if you can bring a small snack for each of the children involve in the photoshoot, no matter what age group. The family session is all about the interaction between the family members. Don’t be afraid to pick up your children and toss them in the air. Tell your children and your husband how much you love them and how much you appreciate them. Have fun. Laugh. Giggle. Joke. Snuggle. Play. Doing these things will allow me to capture the emotion and true beauty of your family. Show me who you really are, so that I get the opportunity to capture your love through the lens.

Most of my personal lfavourite images contain one person or more than one. I aim to document and capture relationships in my life to make my work powerful and emotional. Consider the relationships within your family and try in the net few days to make a list of the most significant moments in your family’s life now. Most likely these relationships will change over time so don’t forget to document who you and children enjoy spending time with most right now.

TIPS FOR A SUCCESFUL PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION Here you will be able to find some tips to keep in mind to prepare for a great photography session.

With the years I have learned a thing or two about young children and families. I will do my best to try and provide tips to prepare your family so you can have a great experience.

1.- R E L A X ! You can’t have fun if you are

stressed out. My goal is to record the current stage your family is at. The essential component of my sessions is the kind of relationship you have, and the interaction you have with each other. If you are stressed or sad it will show through the images.

2.- “You are not yourself when you are hun-

gry” - remember the Mars bar add? Well the same apply for toddlers and adults. If you are considering going out for dinner after the session, that’s a great idea but make sure you pack a snack and a water bottle for everyone, to avoid being stuck with un cooperative children and stressed dads.

3.- Comfort is your friend! Chose your clothes way in advance and make sure that your outfit choices are comfortable. If you want to wear those new shoes, make sure that you wear them a few times before the session so you are not slowed down by blisters or walk akwardly because they are too tight. Colours have an impact on our mood and they can transmit feelings. If you want your family photos to look soft and elegant, then chose neutral colors with soft, flowing fabrics…. think creams,

very soft pastels, oatmeals, light browns, tans, grays, and slate blues. Want to showcase the fun and spunky side of your family? Choose coordinating colors (but not matchy, matchy) with bold accent colors, such as hues of gray with yellow or bright red accents. Adding fun accessories like scarves, headbands, hats, etc. can add a modern twist and sassy flair to your images.

4.-You don’t have to always smile. The best

photographs are often the ones where everyone is engaged or interacting with each other. Not every picture needs to have everyone looking at the camera and smiling at the same time. If you are engaged as a family and loving on each other, your eyes will be on your family members and your smile with be natural. These are the photographs that you will cherish most because they depict your family connection and your love. 5.-INTERACTION. The family session is all about the interaction between the family members. Don’t be afraid to pick up your children and toss them in the air. Tell your children and your husband how much you love themand how much you appreciate them. Have fun. Laugh. Giggle. Joke. Snuggle. Play. Doing these things will allow me to capture the emotion and true beauty of your family. Show me who you really are, so that I get the opportunity to capture your love through the lens.

HOW DOES IT WORK? So, you have an idea of what you want, and who would be involve in your photoshoot. Now ... how does it work?! Here I will explain step by step how your session comes together.

Page 22 | Magazine

So you have gone through your albums, and have an idea of what you would like your family photos to look like. Now it’s when the fun begins! 1.- HELLO! Pick up the phone or shoot me an email or a facebook message to let me know who you are and how old the kiddos are. 2.- LOCATION and time of the year. You don’t have to wait for summer to have a great family session. Winter can be lots of fun with puddles and cozy blankets. Depending on the age of the children think about the location of your shoot. As mentioned before you can choose at home or on location, but you can also get outside the box! How about a trip to your local coffee shop where you have breakfast or brunch most weekends? 3.-WHAT TO WEAR?! So we have a location and we know who is involve in the photoshoot, now... what are we going to wear?! Try to keep it simple and comfortable. Try to stay away from patterns and big logos and character clothing (Dora, Thomas...) as they can distract the viewer from the subject when looking back a the photos. 4.- THE BIG DAY IS HERE! Try to relax and make sure everyone is rested and have a

lasy day. I will arrive to the location, meet you and then the fun will begin! As per the previous articles I aim for genuine interaction and will prompt the kids to do some games and follow along. Payment should be made prior or on the day of the session. 5.-One week after our session is done I will send you a link to your Mobile Photography App. This app has a selection of images. You have unlimited downloads on it, so you can send the link to other family members for them to download to their mobile/ tablet device. 6.- YOUR GALLERY IS READY!
