Each month, subscribers receive a "heads up" email newsletter to notify them that a new issue is complete. This email will give some highlights of the new edition and share support tips or additional tools. Subsequently, a second, very brief automated email will arrive. It will contain only a blue link, which is keyed to the subscriber's registered email address. No password or signin is required. Clicking that single blue link in the email will take the subscriber to the new edition of HoofSearch. No signin is necessary; the system will recognize the email address. The user's browser will then display the new edition. The subscriber can choose to browse the complete edition (usually about 50+ pages) or use the hot-linked contents page to jump to a favorite section. The document consists of listings that link directly to source documents collected by HoofSearch. Clicking on a link opens a new browser tab with the source document or information how to access it.

HoofSearch is hosted on the Google Docs platform. When you subscribe, your email address is keyed to access HoofSearch documents. The document will open instantly and you should be able to start scrolling through the document. Subscribers with slower connections may want to allow time for the document to fully load. If the document does not open, or Google gives a warning message, check these common problems: Are you connected to the Internet? Are you using your own computer, so your email address can be identified by the document? Are you possibly signed in to a different email account? This might deny access. Might your employer or university have blocked access to certain outside sites? Is your Internet connection slow? (Give it time to load.) If a problem persists, please email franjurga@gmail for help.

Once a subscriber starts receiving HoofSearch, the documents will be retrievable in any browser or any device if the user is registered with Google Drive or Docs. Once in Drive or Docs, look for "shared files" or "documents owned by anyone" or even "recent documents" collection at https://docs.google.com/. All the HoofSearch documents previously sent will be there. Each month, another document will be added to the user's dashboard. You don't have to do anything except click the blue email link the first time you are notified that the document has been posted to the web. Users can type in simple search terms to look for keywords or author names across their HoofSearch dashboards. A search tool within each document at the top right searches all pages in that edition only. Some subscribers may need to sign in with Google, or create a Google Docs user account if Google doesn't recognize an email address. For most people, this is not a problem. You should not need to change your email address.

Almost any web-connected device will open and display HoofSearch. An Internet connection is required for the links in the citations to connect with journal websites. HoofSearch will open by default in your device's preferred web browser: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc. If you are using a tablet, phone or other mobile device, you may find it convenient to download the Google Docs or Google Drive apps. When you do this, HoofSearch will be at your fingertips whenever you need or want it, without opening the browser. Docs/Drive are not required. Users with iPhones and iPads who don't want to use the apps can create a home screen icon of their HoofSearch documents for faster access using Safari. Just ask if you need help. You can open and re-open the HoofSearch file on any device as long as you are signed in to your matching email account. 8
Remember to connect to the Internet before you try to use HoofSearch links. You may be able to read/browse the HoofSearch document when you are offline, but links depend on a web connection. More about links: Paywalls (red labels): Some readers have a university or library sign-in that will give them full access to all the papers and theses regardless of paywalls. Other readers will have sign-in access to only some paywall journals. Still others, particularly private practice vets, farriers, physios and trainers, may not have any access to paywall journals beyond the abstract pages. Even without full access, you can still click a red link listing and read the full abstract and sometimes view images and references for an article on the free side of a paywall. Or you may decide to purchase access to the article. It is always worth a click to see what the publisher has provided without charge. Also, access privileges can change. Open Access and free-to-view listings (green labels): These articles may be read/downloaded by anyone and do not require sign-in.

Help is never far away. If you run into problems with accessing or opening the document, please send an email to request help. Give your name and email address for reference. Describe your problem. Do not depend on contacting HoofSearch via Facebook Messenger. HoofSearch was tested for 22 months before subscriptions were sold. Test users had few problems. Please remember that HoofSearch does not publish the research/papers; it is a guide to papers published by others. HoofSearch cannot answer questions about a particular article or connect you with an author. Click the link and use the publisher's abstract page for that. If you have a problem, always check your Internet connection and that you are signed in using the email address that HoofSearch has on file. Signing in with different email addresses may cause access problems. Feedback and general questions are always welcome. Remember that HoofSearch itself is protected by copyright and that neither the document nor contents may not be copied or shared. But if you like HoofSearch, please spread the word! Thank you for subscribing to HoofSearch and for caring about progress in the care and treatment of horses and hooves.
