WORK SAMPLE - “Observation, design, and creating” MArch & BA (Hons)
I
’ve always loved to explore cities and architecture. During the travels, I was always amazed by the diversity of people’s lives in different areas and deeply touched by the dreams of these people depicted through architecture. Maybe it is because of these dreams that I choose to be an architect. As an architect, rather than follow the tendency towards a technologically advocated worship, I prefer to be a sober witness and poetic narrator in this changing era. Design is not only a prelude to the birth of architecture, but also a media to criticize society and declare my resistance for me, a tree which should nurture by its own solid.

uch reflection propels me to ask ceaselessly: how to endow materials and sustainable design with the ability to narrate; how to define a right stance; how to arouse the longing of hope in this nihilism epoch; even how to remake a fascinating story based on the malapropos platitude and cruel reality. The answers worth me spend whole life to explode.

Compared with previous housing design, these drawings not only reflect the improvement of my architectural design skills, but also reflect my deeper understanding of housing in dense cities and the application of narrative architecture. In addition to the architecture itself, the richness of expression skills also makes how to promote my own design become another important focus for me. At the same time, the advantages of group cooperation mode have been fully played by us. Everyone tried the best to play their strengths together to improve the design step by step.

A BLUEPRINT OF THE MCDONALDLAND: HONG KONG MCALLEY HANDBOOK Mark: 80/100 - Supervisor: Johanna Muszbek muszbekj@liverpool.ac.uk - Thesis project (Y5) - Group project [residential]
we’re caring them
Hong Kong is one of the richest, most economically developed and highest standards of living region in the world. However, under such high light, the city still has some unsatisfactory places. For example, living space as the basic human needs, in Hong Kong is a very serious problem from old time to present. As a result, many people cannot buy, rent any house, or even apply for public housing provided by the government. Under this context, the 24-hour McDonald’s in Hong Kong with its concept of tolerance and equality for all people, almost has become the shelter for these homeless people at night unconditionally, making them a special group of people in Hong Kong, the McRefugee. The McRefugee issue itself is a very contradictory and satire result of the incompetent government. Fortunately, the McDonald’s brand awareness led the public to notice this issue, and inspired this project to keep paying attention to this matter and eager to think and study about it. This project will make the response to this through architectural means.

2. Y3 16 WEEKS PROJECTS
T
his is the most complete two 16-week individual projects in my entire student life. The theme is “City is the house, house is the city”.
These two residential projects revolve around architecture and social relations, and both have a high degree of completion, with great efforts put into the whole process. Adhering to the attitude that function is more than form and form serves function, the convenience and comfort of “people” became my main pursuit at that time. From the research and analysis to the final drawing of the design, it reflects my strong logical thinking ability.

1 4 Camden Lock
Camden Town
We were requested to mix more urban intervention this semester, which means that the bridge should be a multifunctional place, not just a connection in city level.
Camden Town is located on the northeastern of London, which is not big, but quite famous. The Camden Lock Railway Bridge and The Market Hall as the landmarks of that place were well known by the public. According to the project I did last semester, which was corridor, a kind of circulation or connection. Therefore, I chose the bridge this semester.

RESEARCH
The traditional definition: A bridge is a structure built to span physical obstacles without closing the way underneath such for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle. It is a connection in the city. However, a modern bridge could be a place which has the capacity for habitant. It could be a basketball court, a coffee shop, and even an open theatre. It is possible to be anything rather more than a connection. That also accords with the situation of London especially with innumerable fast-growing buidings with high density.
Actually, Camden Lock area in London is way busy, and noisy, even dizzy and dark. The punk spirit is full of all the area. Combining several old things to create something new happened every day. Nothing goes wrong here. After all, Camden is about contrast. Therefore, I am going to follow the traditional type, and then to develop that into new one. By the inspiration of the font on the bridge, the black and white solid materials are the best to contrast the colourful site. 28
1. PIER
PREVIOUS STREET VIEW 1. Pier as the regular node between 2 elements 2. Font as the feature of facade - Spirit / Concept
One of the opportunities of future Camden Town might be. The Bridge is a part of Camden Lock area, which was painted in 1989 by artist John Bulley with the words Camden Lock in giant letters on the superstructure. Soon, this bridge became one of the famous landmarks in London.
2. FONT - Black and white - Strong, bold and distinctive - Evolution, not revolution - long and rich history that shouldn’t be forget - Punk spirit. Nothing goes wrong here. Camden is about contrast - True punk fashion, nothing goes to waste. Every solid and void has its own function

As van Eyck said in 1962, that tree is leaf and leaf is tree city is house and house is city. The study about the city is like the study about the house sometimes. For example, one functional module in a house is like a district in a city. Therefore, we were requested to choose one functional module after looking for some case studies, and then, do the research, design, and modification to finish it. 36

A
fter joining the workshop hold by CJ Lim, UCL’s famous Unit 10 tutor, I started to learn narrative architecture. Then, narrative, sense and experience were gradually emphasized in my design. All of these MArch projects were only finished in 8 weeks. Whether it was team or individual work, had a good degree of completion.

WORKSHOP PROJECT THE CITY UNDER WALLS
- Supervisor: CJ Lim (UCL Unit 10) - Workshop project (before Y4 S2) - Group project in 3 days [urban theoretical]
Concept collage according to the text
With the help of a piece of culture, a historical event or even a paragraph of words, we can endow buildings with a soul and make people deeply affected by architecture.
‘Isaura, city of the thousand wells, is said to rise over a deep, subterranean lake. On all sides, wherever the inhab- itants dig long vertical holes in the ground, they succeed in drawing up water, as far as the city extends, and no farther. Its green border repeats the dark outline of the buried lake; an invisible landscape conditions the visible one; everything that moves in the sunlight is driven by the lapping wave enclosed beneath the rock’s calcareous sky. Consequently, two forms of religion exist in Isaura. The city’s gods, according to some people, live in the depths, in the black lake that feeds the underground streams. According to others, the gods live in the buckets that rise, suspended from a cable, as they appear over the edge of the wells, in the revolving pulleys, in the windlasses of the norias, in the pump handles, in the blades of the windmills that draw the water up from the drillings, in the trestles that support the twisting probes, in the reservoirs perched on stilts over the roofs, in the slender arches of the aqueducts, in all the columns of water, the vertical pipes, the plungers, the drains all the way up to the weathercocks that surmount the airy scaffoldings of Isaura, a city that moves entirely upward.’

Inseparable from the huge water resources is the development of local industry, agriculture and animal husbandry. Small Wells contain huge energy. And how to use this relationship sustainably is the next thing to consider.

MEMOIRS OF AN INDUSTRIAL STORY Dingle Youth Centre - Supervisor: Paul Robinson - Academic project (Y4S1) - Group project [educational]
This project is to design an activity centre within the city that can provide young people a location for exploration and training. The centre provides a variety of inside and outside space where young people can meet, explore new skills and be challenged both physically and mentally. Located in Dingle area of Liverpool, the given site is adjacent to the rail line close to Brunswick Station and a 15m cliff drop. As Liverpool’s important dockland in 19 and 20 centuries’, Dingle has a strong industrial history. Liverpool Overhead Railway used to pass through along the given site. Taking consideration of the industrial characters into structure system and architectural narrative, young people can explore not only new skills but also the vanishing industrial memory of Dingle.

TEMPORAL NARRITIVES HafenCity Cultural Exchange Complex - Supervisor: Jonathan Shaw - Academic project (Y5S1) - Group project [cultural] Focusing on the multi-culture conflict issue in Hamburg caused by the huge refugee influx in recent years, this project aims to provide a architecture solution to soften the conflict between German people and refugees, and the barrier between people from different cultures. Inspired by Peter Zumthor’s book, Atmosphere, the project investigating architecture atmosphere as a ‘currency’ to break the barrier between people from different culture background. The design aims to create an atmosphere of architecture that generates the similar feeling among visitors. In this space, atmosphere builds an emotional connection between people. At this moment, people let go of cultural stereotype and start to hear the story of others.
The settlement ability of Germany government’s measures was much less to reach the need for the huge refugee influx in Germany. The discontent of refugee caused negative impact to the public society of Germany. This turned into a culture conflict between German people and refugee. Thus, we raised the question: how to soften the conflict between German people and refugee in Germany?

The origin and culture background of the refugee in Germany is complex. Moreover, there was a large number of residents with migrant background in Hamburg. The research is showing that Germany is facing a multi-culture future. Hence, we raised the second question: how to soften the barrier between people from different cultures?

The needs level is from maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The chart above shows the data collected from refugee welocome map. There are more places providing basic needs to refugees, such as food, shelter and clothes. Place for safety are less than physiological ones, including medical and mental consulting. The next stage of need is belonging, including employment facility and educational places.

Network: Knowledge exchange space This Diagram shows three place for local residents. Including performance centre , community centre and cultural centre. All these 3 types of places provides places for local residents, which become a natural storytelling and knowledge exchange place. Due to the hafencity area is still under development, there is a strong need for helding community event. Our design are aiming to provide a place for residents to gather around and social.

This Diagram shows 3 types of general meeting up place. Including park, playground and plaza. People in hamburg tend to express their opinion through Grafity. They need a place to meet up and speak. These three function, free speech, meet up and gathering is the hafencity need space for. Our design are aiming to provide a place for both residents and refugee to gather.
We used an interactive conceptual model to study and explain our research of interpersonal relationship. Different culture and language background leads to communication difficulties and misunderstandings. People start to label other cultures. Taking off the tags and breaking misunderstandings starts from recognition. Identifying with others creates recognition between people. It requires a media to create the sense of identifying with another. We call it the ‘currency’. We found: even from different culture background, we all enjoy the smell of blossom, reading a good book… That is the ‘currency’ we are seeking – a communicant feeling. Nevertheless, how can this be created in architecture? In Peter Zumthor’s book Atmosphere, we found the answer – atmosphere. Build the sense of atmosphere in an architecture to create a communicant feeling among all visitors. That forms the strategy of the design.

‘we perceive atmosphere through our emotional sensibility. It is a form of perception that works incredibly quickly, and which we human evidently need to help us survive.’ – Peter Zumthor

This project aims to research and study the design philosophy of ‘form serves function’ by designing envelope for an animal by studying its basic living habits. Take the peacock as an example, start from its behaviour, learn the basic space it needs to survive and reproduce, and create an ideal Eden for it.
This project plans to design a playground for children aged 2 to 6 years old to study and play in Moon Bay of Dushu Lake, Suzhou.
During this process, I was enlightened a lot and influenced my subsequent architectural study.
Among them, safety and interestingness are the focus of the whole design. The blue and orange areas correspond to the parent-child activity area and the area where children play by themselves, while the yellow children’s bicycle path provides another different choice for kids.
This landscape includes creative workshop, rest area, multifunctional area and play area for children of different ages.
